Walter on the Music Box record / Adam (54,706)
by 123 from USA

Adam, you might have missed Walter's recent interviews regarding Mariah, they are not complementary at all. You might want to look up his comments when she launched her Chanteuse Tour. He did an interview prior regarding AIWFCIY stating "it's not my favorite song I've written" yet Mariah has stated recently that she wrote the whole song and "silly of me" for giving up 50% of the credits. She even came up with the melody on her Casio keyboard. It's very apparent that he only wants to work with her again for the cash. He broke her trust during a time where she needed it most, especially when other producers didn't take Tommy's offer to spy on her after their divorce. Also, Mariah would beg to differ on your comment that Walter is responsible for a huge part of her success. If you watch this interview, at 6:30 the interviewer makes that same reference and Mariah quickly corrects her as her face already said what she was thinking. "We are collectively responsible for those." Mariah cuts folks loose who betray her, she isn't going to work with him ever again, and I'm fine with that. Hopefully one day everyone else will be too.

Top 5 vocals: 5. O Holy Night 4. Fly Like A Bird 3. My All 2. Bliss 1. Someday Top 5 songwriting: 5. Cry 4. Underneath the Stars 3. Breakdown 2. Petals 1. Looking In

I've always wanted to ask this on this messageboard but I never got around to it, so thank you for posting. For vocals, I think I would choose: 1. O Holy Night: Hands down her best vocal performance, in my opinion. God was in the studio when she recorded this. I also let my friend listen to this song a while ago and she turned into a lamb. 2. Emotions: It's one of the most vocally challenging songs ever recorded. And it's the ultimate song for any singer to prove their whistle register. 3. Butterfly: One of her greatest, most emotional and beautifully sung songs. 4. If It's Over (Grammys): Her greatest live performance. Enough said. 5. Fly Like A Bird: A good way to show that a Mariah never "lost her voice" after the 90s and is still a world class vocalist to this day. Songwriting: 1. Cry. Such an emotional song, with such powerful lyrics. 2. The Roof: The imagery is amazing here. One of her greatest songs. 3. Fourth of July: This is poetry. 4. Outside: Such a beautifully written track. One of my favorites. 5. Breakdown: So haunting and deceiving, beautiful. There are so many missing here, and on any given day, some of these might change but I think this is a list I could definitely go with. Mariah really has the greatest discography.

Vocals, songwriting (54,703)
by Stacey from USA

If someone asked you your 5 most favorite tracks to show off Mariah's best vocals what would they be? If someone asked you to do the same with her songwriting, what would they be? Try not to include any "woe is me" Hero/CTTA or holiday tracks because those are way too obvious for both vocals and songwriting. Dig deeper. My picks for vocals are: *You're So Cold (the intro), that intro leaves me speechless. *Vanishing (SNL '90 performance) *Emotions (Unplugged '92) *Underneath the Stars *Circles (that run at 2:44 gives me chills everytime) I need to think about songs that show off her amazing songwriting skills. One off the top of my head would be The Roof. There is some phenomenal storytelling going on here. She writes in such a way that you can visualize the scene as it unfolds in the song. Looking In is another favorite. I don't think anyone had any idea how miserable MC was in her life. That song is the theme of my life. So powerful. Have fun.

What a lovely story to read on the site. I know she gets labelled a diva, but she has such a big heart. Love her. Make It Look Good is absolutely fantastic. A boat was missed by not releasing it as a single. I actually don't skip over songs on MIAM. I know some or less than impressed with the album, but I think she did an incredible album. Thirsty is not my fave track, but oh well, lol.

Negativity vs. constructive criticism (54,701)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
Some people need to understand the difference between these two terms. Negativity is someone coming here with the sole purpose of bashing Mariah with no credible opinions to back up any of their points. With Eric's rules, I doubt those kind of posts ever get posted. Constructive criticism is critiquing MC and providing credible opinions to back up your claims. I found nothing derogatory or offensive in Randy's posts about Mariah's voice. Mariah's voice isn't the same. I know things change over the years. How or why that has happened is up for discussion. Last time I checked this was a messageboard. You know a place for talking, lol. I wonder if under Sony's control, part of that control was preserving Mariah's voice. It seems her voice started losing its richness after 1997 when MC split from Tommy. Just a thought I'm throwing out there. Anyways, don't be so quick to rush to judgement someone is being negative. Thoughtfully read their posts to better understand where they are coming from. If you still find a problem with it, ignore it and move onto something else. Peace.

Well now MC is back at Sony, it could well happen that they pair up again. I'm not sure if he is still under contract there these days or if he's moved on. Has anyone been keeping tabs on him? Although, as Mariah said, "when I break I break", so I'm not holding my breath. I'd be more interested to see what her and Ben Margulies would come up with all these years later. I'd love for MC to forget all the glamour and whatever goes with it, head back to the woodshop with Ben, and just get into the moment and make music the old fashioned way.

Is great. It's one of the best tracks on "Me I am Mariah". I agree that had it been released in the 90's it would have gotten major airplay. I've often wonder what other gems didn't make the album.

I love this song. Unfortunately, the link is not opening (video not available in my country). Would someone be kind enough to send me an mp3? Liloo82@hotmail.com. Thank you. For me the best story telling song is Betcha Gonna Know because the story is not only told by the lyrics, but also by her tone. You can really feel the emotion in the song. Now I wonder if it's "for real, for real".

What a coincidence. I also watched the SNL performance today. I really love this song. It's my favourite on Emotions (along with Make It Happen) and one of my all time favourite Mariah songs. I particularly love the beginning of the song, which reminds me of I Don't Wanna Cry. So sad that it didn't go to number one.

Thanks for sharing that article. I've never read it but found it so fascinating. I really love those 2 working together and felt they created beautiful harmonies and records that will always be untouched. I wished Mariah would grow up and move on from her grips about him. He's has been complementary to her in many interviews and appears to want to work with her again. I think its impossible for her to listen to her catalogue of records and not wonder that Walter is responsible for a huge part of her success. Someone close to her needs to break through to her to work together with Walter for a new album. Pretty please.

The comparissions (54,693)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah was compared to Whitney, Britney was compared to Madonna, and every singer that has debuted since 1998 has been compared to Mariah i.e. Christiana, Jessica, Arianna, and Tori Kelly. Mariah's style is unmistakable. When you hear a song by Mariah it is obvious she wrote it and had a hand in the arrangement of the song. Mariah Carey has a signature sound that is instantly recognizable as is her voice. The problem I had with Arianna Grande is that she wasn't trying to find her own voice, she was mimicking Mimi. She is a talented mimic. Is she a talented singer or is she just mimicking one?

I found this really interesting article from 2011. Walter talks about how the Music Box album came together. He mentions his involvement in her debut, their collaborations on Emotions, and goes into some great detail about Dreamlover, Hero and Just to Hold You Once Again as well as how he regretted that Everything Fades Away didn't make it onto the US edition.

Make It Look Good (54,691)
by Bill from the UK

QHM, thank you for posting the link to the extended MILG. That song is by far and away the best thing she's written in the last ten years and when I was on my first play through of MIAM, I had to stop and replay that song about twenty times before I could move on to the rest of the album. It just struck a chord with me and Stevie's celestial harmonica and the O Jay's sample just worked so well with her voice. It's so well written lyrically too, it would have been perfect to follow Beautiful if it weren't for the whole arm drama. One thing I'm unhappy about with the song is that it is over all too quickly, so this beautiful prolonged into is brilliant. I remember the original TAOLG track list had this as the opening track. With that intro it would have really worked as a great beginning to the album.

Make It Look Good (extended version) (54,690)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

I remember there was this teaser of some sort released before, if I'm not mistaken, The Art Of Letting Go dropped. It featured Mariah speaking over this orchestral background music which I recall excited some of us in this board because we were hoping for the then unreleased album (which eventually turned out to be MIAMTEC) to sound that way. When I first heard some of the riffs off the backdrop of Make It Look Good, I knew there was something familiar about it, so when I tried to search for the teaser again, I ended up finding this fanmade clip instead, which used the music from the teaser as an intro to MILG. Now the quality of the teaser sound snippet isn't the best (it deteriorated as a consequence of unsuccessfully removing Mariah's voiceover) but it's good enough to give us an idea of what MILG would've probably sounded like during the earlier production stages. Although it is my favorite track off MIAMTEC, my only other issue with the song (the first one being the absence of a verse from Stevie) is that it has always sounded too short for me (it fades out after the second chorus). This makes me wish this intro wasn't cut out, if it was part of the original mix of the track at all. It just adds another level of sophistication to an already opulent song. Oh well. It's still the most buoyant joint on the album and one of Mariah's few swinging feel good moments.

Why is Billboard's Trevor Anderson not crediting MC as the main songwriter of her own debut album? (54,689)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
Who the hell writes an in depth review of one of the greatest artists to ever do it's debut album, track by track, but forgets to mention that she wrote every single song, many before she was even out of high school? Never mind how the only person credited as co-writer is a guy who aside from his connection to Mariah has left not a skidmark on music since they parted ways almost 25 years ago. Not to mention how she produced Vanishing, a standout track to critics and fans alike, on her own that's aged line a fine wine. Someone like Adele's obviously been influenced by the kind of bare production Mariah had to fight to keep back then. Trevor Anderson is clearly a hack because just recently he has done interviews with people like Charlie Puth, Tori Kelly and Rachel Platten, but had no problems at all making sure the Billboard readers understood he was a songwriter and producer in full detail. Even when he shades Mariah's lyrics he can't bring himself to actually give her credit for writing it. Why does a "writer" neglect to give a a fellow scribe their just dues at the one moment where he would be expected to, the retrospective/review of said writer's debut works? Couldn't Gary Trust have written that article? Billboard, a magazine dedicated to stats, credits and lists is always doing passive aggressive things where Mariah's concerned and I'm sick of it. Team MiMi needs to market her as a songwriter 24/7. MC's next album title: Songwriter Supreme, Songbird Sublime. Done.

Does anyone else think this is one of Mariah's best songs ever? I watched the SNL performance of the song this afternoon and remembered how amazing the song is. There's been so much hype on the #1s lately and I've been watching those so I feel like it gets discriminated against because it only made #2. But dare I say I like it better than many of the #1s. I like the video too, so I shall watch it now.

Other storytelling songs / Lee TS / Bill (54,687)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

Lee TS, thanks, that's sweet of you especially since I'm mostly just rambling in all my posts. Bill, yeah, I had that in the top 20 (yes, I actually went that far), it was just so hard to narrow it down to 10 for obvious reasons. So I just tried to focus on the songs that were "more story-telling" than others, if that makes sense. Aside from Twister, the other songs that didn't quite make the cut were: 12) We Belong Together. The second verse never fails to get me. The desperation is just so raw. 13) The Wind. Makes you wonder why Mariah rarely does jazz. It's a crime. This is one of the few songs in her earlier albums that will better suit her current, more mature tone. 14) Love Story. Classic boy meets girl story that some of today's rom-coms are all about. 15) Reflections (Care Enough). Disturbing abortion reference aside, this is really quite touching, especially the second verse. 16) Candy Bling. In an interesting way, this sounds like present Mariah reminiscing about that date in Fourth of July but revealing more. 17) Babydoll. There's something very posh about this song. It's very 90's without sounding dated. I usually listen to this after Honey and before The Roof. Interesting storyline there. 18) Clown. This sly diss track is appropriately low key in terms of instrumentation, which only highlights its impact. 19) Circles. Seems like something she would sing after being stood up again on a planned date. 20) Lullaby. This lighter sequel to The Roof is all kinds of flirty.

You probably didn't mean it as a diss, but it did come off as dismissive to Whitney. By your original post you weren't around when Mariah came out. She was immediately pegged by the public as the "Next Whitney", the "White Whitney", or the Whitney Clone. Of course Columbia didn't help by using some of the same producers to make her sound less soul/r&b and more pop by having producers mainstream/watered down her songs, especially those she created prior to having a deal. The big difference is that Mariah was less diva (just a gifted vocalist) and more of a singer /songwriter/ producer/ musician so she made a conscious effort with each album to create and carve out her own sound, especially with her voice. Becoming lighter and airier. Whitney was a force and won the battle of the voice with her rendition of IWALY in 92 and began to retreat from the music scene altogether sans a few songs on a couple of soundtracks and an lp at the end of the decade. Prior to that, no one had a bigger career other than MJ. She still holds the title for the most consecutive number 1s (seven). Mariah only won the war because of her amazing work ethic of releasing quality product one year after another which lead to her domination of the 90s.

Album ideas for Mariah's future projects (54,685)
by Mushaakiss from UAE
| |
|
|
I was listening to some 70s and 80s hits recently and I know Mariah has done many remakes over the years, Without You, IWKWLI, BOTHB, Open Arms, AAO, etc, but she hadn't done a full album of remakes which I think would be a [...] addition to her catalogue. She doesn't need to always have to make new music, she's done that for years and maybe it's time to take a little break from that or maybe just as she did with #1s To Infinity, include 1, maybe 2 new songs, but not more. Would be [...] if the added songs are some unreleased songs from her earlier work. Would be a nice surprise. Another album I'd like to hear is a duets album including some big names she's always respected and has [...] chemistry with. Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Aretha, Mary J. and I'm sure there are many others that people would like to hear her duet with. She needs to do something different and put out easy listens not worrying about charts and all of that nonsense. She's an established megastar and unless she works to please teenagers who currently impact the charts, she wouldn't be able to please everyone. IMO albums like that will reconnect her with her real fans and maybe make new younger fans appreciate how beautiful music can be without all the raunchiness and rather forgettable music on the airwaves right now. Make it happen Mariah.
