"All My Life" (56,370)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
So, I've been listening to "Glitter" right now, blasting every tune and adoring it just like the first time I put it in my cd-player. "All My Life" is one of all-time favorites by Mariah, ever, and the monster hit that never was and should have been. Imagine if that was the first single off the soundtrack. I would die if she performed it live.

Re: Mariah Carey shades Christina and Jessica (56,346) (56,354)

Funny indeed, but keep in mind that there is a little bit of montage involved in this clip. Mariah's (shady) reaction in 0:03 that follows the mention of the two names is taken from a different segment of the same interview, so she's not basically shading the people John Norris mentioned.

Rainbow era / wardrobe (56,310)
by Billy from Greece
| |

MC was so cool during the Rainbow era, like "I'm throwing a pair of jeans, a random t-shirt and call it a day" and she still looked gorgeous. She had that cutting-edge thing going on then (attitude-wise), very modern, street-smart and with a wink in the eye. This more relaxed Mariah I do miss. It's funny because up until the Glitter era she would sport this jeans based look quite often. After signing to Island though, and beginning with Charmbracelet, she glammed it up to the max (with a break during the E=MC2 era, where she was more casual in her wardrobe). I love me glam (or as she said to B.Scott in 2009 "vamp") Mariah, but I also kind miss that fresh-looking casual MC look. Check her out here.

From the clips I've watched, MC looked stunning and sounded beautiful and energetic. What do these hater-reviewers want more? Condom dresses? Really?

Hey there. I agree, MC looked stunning at the Walk of Fame ceremony, and I had the exact same reaction when viewing the "Infinity remix" footage, it totally brought me back to "My All/Stay Awhile".

Rare footage, late 1980s (55,740)

Guys, take a look at this video. There are a few seconds where you can see MC perform background vocals for Brand K. Starr way before her solo career. It's amazing. She was just a baby here. Also, there are a few backstage moments from the "Emotions" video that I've never seen before. Check it out.

Re: Lee TS (55,563)

Lee, I think it is the extra or differently shaped eyelashes that she's wearing as of late (that are more elongated in the end) that make her look sort of different. Still, whatever she may be doing is fine since she is still the same Mariah. As for natural lines, when I saw her up close back in 2009 she seemed perfectly natural and expressive to me, not "plastic" or stretched. The only thing that seems different to me lately is the look in her eyes, which again may have to do with the eyelashes. Makeup generally also can transform her.

You're so lucky that you were on the Zurich show. Judging from the videos I've seen on YouTube, this must be one of the most epic vocal moments of Mariah's entire career. The performance of "Vision of Love" is mindblowing.

Key of Mariah's songs (55,393)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
See what Mariah has to say about writing her songs on a higher, demanding key and you can see why this may be a trap as well. While she may have a point about songs written in this key being more exciting (meaning, they may have a more joyful feel, always keeping in mind what the mood of the song asks for), I so adore her lower register and what this may bring to songs. Maybe that's why she still feels compelled to not lower the key to some songs ("Fantasy" for instance) and tends to partially lip parts. I wish she got rid of this preconceptions because her voice is a wonder to behold in all its forms.

American Idol contestants (55,381)

I'm watching some videos from the Mariah season of AI and, apart from Burnell Taylor who I've always loved since the beginning, I've rediscovered Amber Holcomb. She has a phenomenal voice, incredible flexibility and ease in stretching out her notes, and a great range. There's a great performance of the both of them singing "Diamonds" and it shows how good they really are. Great singers.

"I Am" (55,343)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
What's up with every female R&B singer using the "I Am" title lately? So you had Beyonce with "I Am... Sasha Fierce", then you had Mary J. Blige's song "I Am" around 09/10, then came Mariah's admittedly more original (!) "Me. I Am Mariah" (which if you think about it, predates all of them ) and now we have Leona Lewis's new album called "I Am". I mean, seriously? I'm sure I'm also missing a couple more in between. Finally, according to a rather obscure interview from last year apparently Mariah had the exact same concept with Beyonce's self-titled album when it came to packaging, title and release, only she got robbed. She didn't name her, but that's the only one I could think of on the basis of the things MC said. If I find this interview again, I'll post it.

Re: enwar00 / "Cry." (55,333)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Enwar00, I second what you say. "Cry." is indeed a masterpiece and a career highlight. I had never heard Mariah using that tone and area of her voice in a studio recording before. This song is proof that she creates "vocal compositions" unlike anyone else. Marvin Gaye used to have a similar approach via vocal layering, and Mariah is equally if not more phenomenal. "Cry." showcases the musician that she is, not the popstar. It could be a song in an avant-garde, supposedly "serious" artist's cd. It is sophisticated, deep, while the minimalist reverbaration of "cry" makes you feel as if you enter a different zone. Finally, though most people - albeit rightfully - salute early Mariah as the greatest vocalist in the world, for me this delivery is the epitome of the greatest singing I've ever heard. The vocal and emotional complexities that are found in "Cry." could not have been achieved by young Mariah.

Mariah's dancers (55,323)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
So, I'm watching the 2005 GMA performance of Mariah and I'm thinking "Why the dancers?" I mean they add nothing to the spectacle as far as I'm concerned, doing silly, awkward dance routines to ballads. Just Mariah guys. Al you need is Mariah, a grand piano, some drama, and a microphone. Just diss the dancers girl. Unnecessary.

"Love Takes Time" Vegas (55,286)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
I love the way she sings the bridge of LTT in Vegas. But the phrase I love the most (after the climax) is "couldn't see that I, that I was so (damn) blind". Just listen how she elongates the "i" sound in "blind". It gives the song so much more pain, and adding that "damn" occasionally just transforms the song from a teenage heartbreak to a plea of a person who has lived, loved and lost. It is such little details that to me separate Mariah from mere good singers.

Mariah / Whitney (55,266)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Here's a nice comment I found on YouTube that describes some of each of these legends' vocal qualities: "One of the primary differences between Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston vocally is that Mariah Carey operates on color, shape and texture while maintaining a more narrow window of volume, while Whitney Houston operated on dynamics with essentially two textures."
