There's a lot of psychiatrists, sound technicians, and corset voice effects experts on this message board. Who knew? Nikki, as you addressed me directly I shall do the same. New scratchy pre records do not a live performance make. What was live was a handful of blunt "eh's", a few yelled "got me feeling's", an off key "sweeeeeet" and a "shoo be doo be doo" thrown in for good measure. GTFO was indeed lipped, the video evidence where she isn't even lipping in time with the playback is all you need. The sparkly outfit was good though so that's something. A technical analysis of "Without You” (83,904) by Bill from the UK Um... Harry Nilsson neither composed nor was the original artist for Without You. It was originally by Badfinger and it was composed by Pete Ham and Tom Evans (of that group). Mariah's version appeared in 1993, not 1992, but was released as a single worldwide in early 1994. Also, the terms "shouty" and "twiddly bits" aren't exactly a "technical analysis". What is that nonsense about this being a live recording? Is that in reference to the video? Mariah was indeed on her own in the studio when this was recorded, as she is with all her recordings. As for Mariah "making it her own", she actually stuck incredibly close to the Nilsson's arrangement, and her remakes always tend to stick to the original arrangements. What rubbish. I really liked the dead of night setting (Crybaby vibes, I agree) and the cut away shots of the sink overflowing, the curtains billowing, all quite arty. Plus Mariah looks amazing, it must be said. But, she could still pull it off without resorting to the lingerie outfit, if only someone would tell her. She looked sexy running through a field in a flannel shirt and jean shorts back in the day for heaven's sake, so she doesn't need to be as in your face about it. But it is what it is. Re: Cussing ruins it for me (83,757) (83,769) by Bill from the UK I agree Stacey. Sonically the song is different, modern, and fresh. I love the atmosphere and mood and for me it seems similar to "Unforgettable", which I loved. She's given up on the souped up belts and whistles that she can't do live anymore which is a step in the right direction too. I hope that continues throughout the album. Vocally it is very Memoirs meets Charmbracelet, and one of her better vocal deliveries in recent efforts. But, like you, I find the profanity lazy and unnecessary. She is a gifted and intelligent songwriter when she puts her mind to it. Thanks for sharing the clean version. (Friday 14 September 2018; 10:57)

Years ago Joni Mitchell released her "Hits" CD which had all her popular songs on them. She only put that album out on the proviso that she also put out a "Misses" disc, which was all the songs that didn't chart or never got a release. MC has a great catalogue of deep cuts no one outside this message board is familiar with. I'd love to see "Petals", "Close My Eyes", "Looking In", "Vanishing" and, of course, "Migrate" (that really should have been a single, thinking about it) have their day in the sun. Or, I've always wanted a Duets album, where we have nice high quality versions of With You I'm Born Again, Hero with Pav, the full length Hopelessly Devoted To You, plus a whole host of others I can't even think of right now. I need to think about it properly. If it's another hits collection, or those damn 18 number ones again, I will be so angry. Yes, Tommy kept Mariah sequestered from the outside world and thus she didn't, presumably, dabble in any substances that would harm her voice. But once she separated from Tommy she seemingly went from one extreme to the other. The over arching take away for me is, had Mariah been no more than just another artist on Sony's books like, I don't know, Gloria Estefan and she was happily allowed to carry down the more soul/old school sound she was doing on the Emotions LP, rather than being geared towards commercial music, I wonder where she would be now and what state. She might only have 5 number ones to her name, but she could well still sound as she did during the beginning of her career. But everyone made their choices. She walked down that aisle, she walked out of Sing Sing, and she also walked out the marijuana store in Aspen with bags and bags of purchases. It is what it is and we are where we are. As has been said, she needs to drop the act and do the best with what she has left. (Tuesday 4 September 2018; 12:55)
