About Bill from the UK: I love Mariah more than you do.

London Daydream Tour Attendee.

Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,088) (81,099) by Bill from the UK
The thing is, even the undubbed Tattoo Club performances weren't even that bad. They were a lot better than most decent singers could accomplish. The only major mess up were the backing singers screwing up Someday and the failed upper register ad lib on Don't Play That Song. The undubbed Unplugged also has nothing wrong with it in my opinion. Mariah did say that when she was at Sony they always said everything had to be perfect and she was in the studio all the time re-recording. I assumed the comment was around her albums but must have extended to the live performances as well. I agree with Andrew that The Art Of Letting Go was a great opportunity to put all that behind her and do the best with the talent God gave her, without resorting to all the unnecessary bells and (forgive the pun) whistles.

Haha. Dysfunctional fan base, so true. Essentially any vocal flaws or imperfections are re-recorded after the event and pasted over the original to make the original sound perfect. This example of I'll Be There from Unplugged is a good example.

Dennis you are right. The smoke and mirrors were there really since the beginning. Even the televised performances were dubbed as videos have emerged of the differences. As much as no one will want to hear it, Mariah was marketed and directed/manufactured to be a competitor to Whitney due to her enormous success. She of course always had one up on her around songwriting and producing and her range as well, but her early voice was always very light and airy, with a range, but it was beefed up to be as big as Whitney's with lots of studio engineering and support to bolster them up (Kelly Price's comments, please refer). Performing like that live clearly impacted. You read about Adele taking time off and cancelling tours etc. due to her voice potentially being damaged. Mariah soldiered on and we hear people like P Diddy (or whatever his latest name is) saying she recorded over 50 different takes of Honey so he could use whatever he wanted. I'm sure she did the same for many other songs and remixes.

There's always been that rumour that she had surgery on her nodules in the mid 90s post-Daydream tour and what we have now is the result of that. I really do think it's a possibility. If it's true she should have addressed it at the time rather than hide behind the smoke and mirrors. If it's not true the vocal decline was all self inflicted which is even sadder.

Can’t Let Go is beautiful, but my fave is Underneath the Stars.

I think the majority were actually settled out of court, rather than being dismissed. I think Hero has been dismissed several times but the others weren't.

Re: Songwriters hall of fame snub (80,859) (80,862) by Bill from the UK
I think Emotions and Make It Happen were settled out of court. Make It Happen and I Want To Thank You have the exact same chord progression and background instrumentation, albeit switched to a different key. TGIFY was accused of sounding too similar to Xscape's "One Of Those Love Songs". Hero has been well documented about the lyrics being lifted from elsewhere. It's Like That apparently replicates a song called "Sexy". I forget the artist and I've never heard the song. As I said, I don't really care either way about it but these instances probably all play a part in recognising somebody's song writing ability.

Re: Songwriters hall of fame snub (80,842) (80,849) by Bill from the UK
Not that I subscribe to the theory, but Mariah does have a, shall we say, chequered history when it comes to her songwriting credits. Emotions vs Best of My Love. Can't Let Go vs Right Before My Eyes. Make It Happen vs I Want To Thank You. Hero, Thank God I Found You, It's Like That, all had lawsuits against them (multiple in Hero's case). Her bigger hits rely on sampling to help carry the melody (Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, The Roof, Loverboy, I could go on). So yeah. Hashtag just saying but I'm sure people consider these things. I personally think she should be inducted for AIWFCIY alone.

I know the hip sway haha. Mariahxlambily on YouTube did a compilation of the live high note when she was promoting the song and I noticed it then. It is a beautiful song. I couldn't believe when "The Ballads" was released that this didn't feature as I agree, it often goes overlooked. I think a lot of fans love this song. The video is one of my favourites, simply beautiful. The whole "Emotions" era for me is when Mariah really came into her own. She was confident, had more control, wasn't married at that point, and was there just making great music and giving amazing performances.

Great live video (80,727) by Bill from the UK
I found this great video on YouTube from the debut era. I had never seen it before. Excuse the awkwardness between Mariah and the host lol, and who knows what is going on at the end with the umbrellas. Mariah sang wonderfully. I've been buried in the debut era so much recently. For the past month all I've listened to is the first album and the singles/remixes. Those 1990 vocals are clear as a bell and her tone never sounded better.

AYNAF is a beautiful song. The "don't you ever be lonely" on the second chorus is, for some reason, the best line she's ever delivered. It gets me every time.

Re: Couldn't Give That Away (80,644) (80,647) by Bill from the UK
Please don't belittle the fact that so many people lost their lives in one of the most catastrophic events on the sea. Look beyond Leonardo DiCaprio and Hollywood and understand that this was a tragic, terrifying end for many people. For all you know, someone reading your note or responding to it may have had an ancestor lose their life that night, so for many there is a reason why that song resonates.

Re: Mariah's most inspiring song (80,620) (80,632) by Bill from the UK
Good post and great song choice. For me it centres around what is defined as "inspiring". From a personal standpoint, a spiritual, a coping with loss etc. She has so many examples. I feel saved every time I listen to Fly Like A Bird, strong and sure of myself when it's Hero, fondly yet sadly remember a lost loved one with Never Forget You and One Sweet Day, and sure God has my back with Vision of Love. So it really depends haha.

I agree but I think everyone has insecurities. Like how Mariah was never photographed from the left side. Her face is beautiful and lovely, and there are so many people who would give "their all" to have natural beauty like Mariah's.

I remember once my mum read me an excerpt from a book she was reading that described a woman's scream as "Mariah Carey being run over by a steam roller". Lolz.

Re: Did Mariah betray her gift or did it betray her? (80,552) (80,557) by Bill from the UK
The major take home point is any singer worth their salt (Mariah excluded it would seem) know that alcohol has always been something to avoid due to the damage it can do to a voice. Exactly the same as marajuana. If you're a singer of limited ability it probably won't even matter. But when you sing across five octaves, with belts in your upper register and equally as taxing soft legato style singing, usually across a 4 minute space and then times that by 12 for a concert, you need to be in tip top shape to pull it off. At the Daydream concert back in 1996 in London (I was an attendee and will brag about that until I'm six feet under), she paused to drink her honey and lemon drink in between each song. During Butterfly that seemingly went out the window along with the turtle necks and trouser suits, and her current vocal ability is through years of abuse. The stupid thing is, she can still pull it out the bag from time to time. So imagine how great she could still be if she treated her immense gift with the care and respect it deserved.

MIAM would have been fine were it not for the "Elusive Chanteuse" addition. Overkill and at that point I genuinely thought Mariah was trolling us.
