The album should be called "Mariah" and be entirely self-composed and self-produced, with only her vocals. The whole thing, only her. No co-writers, no collabs, no co-producers, no backing singers.

I agree. Albums like CB and Memoirs need an entire afternoon set aside to listen and appreciate them end to end. I'm all for the 10-12 track albums.

The ring (80,418)
by Bill from the UK

I really wish Mariah would give that damn ring back to James and be done with that whole episode of her life. Whether true or not these stories will perpetually rise to the surface every so often until she severs all ties. They say you can't put a price on love but, in this case, maybe you can.

Unforgettable was a great track. An album in that vein would be brilliant. I'm still hopeful for a gospel, jazz and acoustic album in the future. There's a YouTube channel that puts up "stripped" versions of Mariah's songs. It adds a whole other layer and vibe to what are already amazing compositions. Plenty of artists have re-worked their back catalogue in that way and I'd love to see Mariah breathe new life into her enormous body of work.

Mariah 2018 (80,347)

Whilst I am pleased with Mariah’s recent image overhaul and great PR and engagements etc., what I’m really missing right now and craving from her is some new music. I hope we see a new album delivered this year.

I agree with what has been said about Mariah and her new team. Watching the clips from the Golden Globes was really refreshing. It was like it was 2005 again. She looked incredible and her with Sharon Stone was really nice to see. I am also interested in the "ball of wax" (lol) that Mariah said is waiting to be uncovered in the music industry following the Hollywood scandal. Absolutely she should be the consultant as she said, she was right there at one of the biggest record labels at the time, married to the boss. Lord knows what she saw and experienced. Not just her own struggles but those of other artists too. Watch this space indeed.

I agree but my one regret is how she dismissed the Grammy Awards when under Stella's reign of terror. Like it or not, they're the Oscar equivalent for the music industry and she'll likely never even see a nomination again after that comment, let alone a win.

I love this post because you have said everything I could ever want to say and I agree completely. When the song was released in the UK, I remember going into Woolworths every Monday after school (it was playing on the radio but I never knew when the official release date was in those days). I gasped when I saw the cover when the single finally hit the shelves. Mariah in the hat looked so beautiful. I loved that we had the "rap remixes" on one CD, and the "club remixes" on the other (with another beautiful cover shot). I was disappointed when I learned a few years later about Slipping Away and how it never saw its way across the pond, but I was grateful to get all those brilliant remixes. I shall play those singles on my iPod on my way to and from work tomorrow to commemorate the 100m views.

Yes, thank you so much for everything. I've been visiting this site pretty much since its inception. I can't imagine the time and dedication it takes to support a site for a singer as popular as Mariah. The discography has been such a pleasure for me. Happy New Year.

NYE performance (80,182)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
So I've seen it now. Not sure what VOL was all about. Was the pause before the final verse a technical problem, a new arrangement, or a dodged ad lib? Either way, it didn't sound great. I was glad she didn't drag out the "that you turned out to" line and instead sang it at the studio pace. If she's changing up her arrangements, good on her. Her voice sounded very strained though throughout. Hero was a lot better, but played safely. After my previous comment, I've had to watch the climax a few times as I can't tell if it was live, a new pre-record, or heavily supported by the backing singers. It did sound great though. There will be the usual "it was cold/she has nodules/she's still sick/she had no honey tea" excuses as usual, but the main takeaway from me was how proud I was of her. She looked very nervous at times, but what a fighter to climb back on the same horse that threw her to the ground last year. She was clearly 95% live at least which, despite the flaws, still sounded great in parts (the "be" ending of VOL, Hero's bridge), she looked great, and she can leave 2017 with her head held high. And never look back.

Re: Mariah Carey paid £3.5M to sing in the New Year (80,159) (80,161)

If she's singing Hero, she'll lip the climax. She's done that since 1997. Why break the habit of a lifetime? That aside, I do wish her well tonight and a Happy New Year. Still praying the other song is a brand new one, rather than a couple of lines from Auld Lang Syne.

I deflated a bit when I heard Hero was going to be performed. It'll be sung in the strained 2008 arrangement with the usual lipped "you'll find the waaaaay, hey then a hero comes along" finale. Meh.

I agree about what's been said about Hero and We Belong Together. I'm also with you all about the Honey performance and the associated trauma is it caused lol. I would go for It's Like That, a new song (or premier the Busta collab, IKWYW part 2), and then round off with Auld Lang Syne. My dream would be for her to sing a rendition of The Perfect Year from Sunset Blvd. There was a British soul singer from the 90s called Dina Carroll who did a beautiful version of it.

I am surprised too but also excited. If she comes out to do the same old songs with pre record then so be it, I hope it at least goes smoothly this time. However, Mariah and her team will know all eyes will be on her performance given the disaster of last year, so she has the opportunity to perform live in fine voice, change up some arrangements to suit her voice, hell, use the publicity and ratings to even drop a new tune out of nowhere. That would be something to remember, talk about, and erase last year’s debacle from memory.

Re: All I Want For Christmas live at St John 1994 (79,981) (79,984)

I have, on many occasions, played nothing but AIWFCIY on repeat all day long. In June. It's is the greatest song she's ever written, her best and most dynamic vocal performance, her signature tune, and an absolute joy to listen to. I did laugh and think of you Licia at the weekend. I was getting my hair cut and the radio played Hero. When it ended the DJ was like "that was Hero by Mariah Carey. Well aware I didn't play *that* Mariah Carey song, but don't worry, it will be played later" or something to that effect.

Look. There is archive footage buried somewhere. It’s a crime it is not released. Just re-issue the album and slap on the St John Divine concert as a DVD extra.

I agree. The two albums are great already and she doesn’t need to go down the Amy Grant route of churning out a Christmas album every two years.
