About Ronnie from California: Lamb. Enough said.

New music (91,846) by Ronnie from California
During the YouTube Q&A, Mariah mentioned having ideas for new music. Do you guys think it is too soon for her to drop another album? Does anyone think she shouldn't release another one?

Given her track record, many of us wouldn't bet on a new album soon. I think Caution was a great addition to her discography and would love a new album. I think a follow up album that continued the story line would make Caution that much more impactful. Currently, it ominously ushers that there is something lurking in the Hollywood smoke but there is no punchline. Sidenote: This makes consider TEOM as a follow up to CB.

Re: Memoirs by Andy (91,335) (91,359) by Ronnie from California
I understand most concerns about the memoirs being a regurgitation of the things we already know. And there great validity to those concerns. But there is a new generation of fans that need to know what she has been through - so not every sentence will be aimed at us. Because of the type of person Mariah is, I am expecting a mixed bag. Childhood stuff that us crazed, obsessed fans can dwell on, good time stories about collabs that would warm us, etc. She always tries to include us whenever she makes movement because she values our dying breed.

But Mariah is going to repeat the narratives we have heard before. The new generation is going to pull her into the importance of the social climate - not us. We can hardly get passed arguing over single choices, nightmare era, and what performances are lipped. It is rather obvious that the resurrection of her Sony days are relevant to the industry right now. Most of us (not myself) were there to experience it firsthand. But it is relevant now, more than then. The music industry has not yet had its moment (other than Kesha) and I'm sure Sony would love to advert the narrative away from the company and place it on Tommy.

Keep it light, it's Mariah season.

Woah (91,011) by Ronnie from California
I'm not sure if anyone remembers when I brought up how Mariah's recent Elvis Duran Caution interview took an ominous turn towards the end. For those that vaguely recollect, as an Christmas skit, he gifted her a shammy for thick makeup, a toilet brush, and a for sale sign for her New York apartment.

Well, I'm here to say that there is so much more to the story. He most recently discussed Mariah and her diva behavior in his new book. Additionally, he will be speaking at Wendy William's Hollywood Star ceremony. There is no doubt that Mariah is tangled in Wendy's career (between Nick coming for her gig, TMB lyrics, Wendy giving her promo for albums and tours, the songwriters HOF scandal, etc).

I think it's also important that Tommy will be getting his star of the Walk of Fame as well. Plus Mariah's star was recently vandalized "stay dead hoe". Plus Mariah has been taking press hits when it comes to her estimated net worth (is this what the for sale sign was referencing?). Is there a war going because this is so coincidental and suspicious? This Christmas is gonna be a spectacle. Stay merry y'all.

Same. I assume it's far too much hassle to do a podcast with a narrow niche for the target audience. I forbid anything to happen to those boys or any other members of the production team. God bless.

I wonder how severe this attack is going to get. Most would probably say that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Have we seen the worst yet? Idk if the Brian lap dance was pretty bad. They have so much footage because the reality show made it so cameras were a surplus. I know Mariah is camera-aware, but you can only hide so much.

Re: Played on the radio (90,638) (90,653) by Ronnie from California
I have heard I'll Be There, Always Be My Baby, Fantasy, Hero, Without You, Endless Love, Dreamlover, Emotions, One Sweet Day, Love Takes Time at that respective frequency on "Oldies" (mid 80's - early 00's) stations.

On throwback stations (90's - somewhat current) I have heard We Belong Together, Shake It Off, It's Like That, Honey, Heartbreaker, Obsessed, Touch My Body. I regularly hear Heartbreaker and Honey at gay clubs. Sometimes I hear obscure club mixes like HATEU remix. I also hear random songs (Candy Bling, Meteorite) at various stores, but I figure it's someone's playlist.

During Christmas, I hear AIWFC, Christmas, Oh Santa, O Holy Night, Joy to the World, SCICTown.

(Pretty much) everyone knows ABMB and AIWFCIY. Most people know WBT, Hero, Emotions, and maybe Obsessed (esp for younger). It is kinda sad that I never really hear VOL. Luckily it remains a staple for singers who study "ambitious" technique alongside Emotions.

Re: Tommy cried to Beautiful Ones (90,586) (90,607) by Ronnie from California
Tommy is a musical artist, so he probably did cry. I remember glancing over that song my first few listens of the Butterfly album. After obsessing over the other tracks, I distinctly had a discombobulated night with that song on repeat - I even fell asleep and woke up with it playing. Maybe it was a dreamer's mind, but I have never been the same since. As a more seasoned lamb, I believe "The Beautiful Ones" was a smart cover choice. The style emphasized her technique, had symbolic lyrics, and maybe somewhat associated her with her legendary peers. By then, everyone knew Mariah is a singer, but she totally trademarked her use of whisper and resonant belts on that album (even if she had been doing it her entire career). Daydream solidified her mastery of it, and Butterfly made it associated with her identity.

Re: Shake It Off (90,557) (90,558) by Ronnie from California
I remember being 8 and not liking Shake It Off. I thought it paled in comparison to ILT/WBT which I associated as a single force. As I got older I fell in love with the vocals, melodies, and even her flow. The acapella is a great listen (like all her acapellas).

Re: So much movement (90,552) (90,553) by Ronnie from California
Everything is lining up and this year may unleash a strategic blow. I do believe that they recorded a Europe show last Christmas, and if Mariah's team has learned anything, she would make this concert available to stream. Idk the technicalities, but a major platform like Netflix would serve well. Last year's concerts were so camp they will gain a lot of attention - I mean she begins by descending from a giant tree dressed as a glowing angel. She also performed The Distance, which was the perfect choice to nod to the slept on Caution. Let people know she still makes great music. She may even get her 19th number one with AIWFCIY. If she follows up with her memoirs and maybe an album, I can imagine a comeback era of Emanicpation magnitude (though not in the same vain). Caution was damage control like CB and we are waiting for a new direction.

Re: What's cooking? (90,526) (90,540) by Ronnie from California
I'm not sure what they are cooking. But I'm starving. Will the feast begin before or after Christmas? She is in the special position of being regulary relevant each Christmas, and that sets her apart from other legends who are lifetimes away from catching everyone's attention.

Re: How touchy can you be? (90,525) (90,539) by Ronnie from California
Clearly we are gonna talk about the shady comment because we are crazy, obsessed fans. But it is not as if Mariah has instructed the lambs to attack Whoopi. Anyone else who gives the comment some attention could choose to use your argument to not care since Mariah is shady herself. But, imo, this is different. I haven't heard Mariah body shame, and that's what is making this catch some attention.

Re: The new Jerry O'Connell show (90,514) (90,520) by Ronnie from California
Yes and it was unnecessarily shady. She whispered it under the other hosts' banter as if the mic wouldn't pick it up. And she said it twice to make sure Ana heard it. I always got the vibe that Whoopi didn't like her. She seemed cold during her earlier appearances - even with Walters there. The shade of it all.

So much movement (90,513) by Ronnie from California
Anyone else excited to see what this team has in store for this new era? I'm definitely feeling like Caution was a first installment to something big. Between OTR, Cosmo, SoSoDef documentary, Tik Tok, and that new alleged camp Mariah snippet for GMA, it seems like there is actual movement now. Perhaps we are gonna piggy back off Merry Christmas' 25th anniversary for some momentum to alleviate the weightlessness. Mariah, we're rooting for you.

I always understood that Album of the Year was a category for solely albums while Record of the Year was for albums and songs. But I might be wrong.

Re: Mariah's networth (90,331) (90,334) by Ronnie from California
I want to know more about Mariah's net worth drop too. I was theorizing that there was an error in the either the 300 or 500 estimate. I was also considering that one of her major investments collapsed. Your songwriting theory is also interesting since now, more than ever, she is pushing for recognition as a songwriter.

I got chills after her Elvis Duran interview for Caution promo. At the end, Santa gives Mariah a toilet brush and a "for sale" sign for when she "sells her apartment". That urked me, God forbid Tommy has anything to do with this.

Terrible interview (90,283) by Ronnie from California
She is still capable of great interviews (V Magazine a year or so back), but the only way I can justify this one is by speculating she is planning to plop herself back into the public eye. No one (other than lambs and our unfortunate companions) has thought twice about Mariah since NYE and her damaged image remains unchanged. Is she planning on shifting the narrative, or is her next emancipation going to be an unapologetically sarcastic one? The Mariah we know is funny and sarcastic as hell - but she's also far more complex atop the shady diva "persona". I figure shifting the narrative is more likely since her team seems to be gearing for one and it aligns with her character. The American (mostly the 'Murican) political/social climate could make some room for her unique position as a target of industry shenanigans. Watching powerhouse corporate leaders be 'reprimanded' has opened up the discussion and perhaps she is a leading lady for the music industry's MeToo moment? This interview left me with more questions than answers.

Proceed with caution: Saudi threats (87,807) by Ronnie from California
Why is no one talking about the alleged terrorist threats? There are allegations that terrorist groups were planning to break havoc at her concert. Whether or not the allegations are false, it is concerning. Given the circumstances, threats are a possibility that I'm sure Mariah and her team acknowledged prior to signing her up. But now that those allegations have been put out there (regardless of validity), it has the power to inspire others to follow through. It's terrible but it is also the truth. And plus, these parallels are getting ridiculous.

Caution (as objective as possible) (86,156) by Ronnie from California
1. GTFO
Pros: The sassy lyrics make this one worth a listen. Mariah feels organic when she isn't taking herself too serious. The way she sings over the sample proves Mariah still has an impeccable flow. The addicting "how bout you" cat-calls draw attention to her use of melodically driven adlibs. There are some Mariah "orchestra"* moments during the main chorus which had a heavenly blend between her voice and the production (* refer to Babydoll).
Cons: The lyrics can be juvenile and do not fail to have the Mariah SAT words randomly thrown in there. The Jamaican accent was too reminiscent of the island music trend. The vocals were underwhelming but they were not necessary on this song.

2. With You
Pros: The climax of this song is the closest we got to a 1997-2005 Mariah climax. Everytime I hear the climax of the song I get memories of the Mariah orchestra she used on her masterpiece "Underneath the Stars". The second verse was a nice variation of the melody she uses in the first verse.
Cons: The melody can be subpar during the first verse. The repetitive "with you" can sometimes feel silly. The chorus feels lackluster until we reach the climax. The vocals were good (esp for her current condition) but it took a while to get there.

3. Caution
Pros: The melodic flow of this song is intriguining almost throughout the entire song. The throwback to Aaliyah 2000's R&B sounds modern and clean. The lyrics are more memorable than most of the songs on the album - I have an easier time remembering the lyrics attached to the melody during the chorus rather than just a melody. The ad libs and background vocals are almost always in the right place. We got a whistle. The track is sexy and Mariah shows why she is a melodically driven writer.
Cons: The first melody is not interesting and it doesn't begin to get interesting until she starts the line "I try to resist...". Considering, that is only 10 secs, I hardly find it a con. The bridge was underwhelming. One specific upper belt belt before the bridge was noticeably sour.

4. A No No
Pros: Mariah makes full use of the Lil Kim sample. This song is a playground for her melodies. The lyrics are classic post CB Mariah, oddly specific references yet somehow relatable enough to make it a universal anthem. I love that BIG was added to the song but it lingered a tad too long. When the choir comes in, I get small memories of Mariah's gospel moments.
Cons: Mariah's ad libs could be silly at times "Japanese for you". It should have been sped up by about 15% and was missing clear room for harmonies. It doesn't have Mariah vocals (not entirely needed on this song but would have been nice).

5. The Distance
Pros: Once the beat drops the song is secured. There were times when Mariah experimented with her flow and mimicked what is selling today. I wonder if this is Mariah showing that she can easily do what people are so impressed by. The moment where she tangles the cheer in the last chorus has traces of what makes songs like Crybaby so great. One of her better vocal moments.
Cons: The song feels insecure during the more simplistic first section of the song. This makes it feel like she recieved the beat before writing the melody, making her rely on the beat more than her writing ability. The melody is relatively repetitive but it's a dynamic one.

Cutting it here for length.

Re: The Distance (85,061) (85,072) by Ronnie from California
I agree Andrew. I have listened to it around 10+ times at this point and it's not my taste either. I did find some background vocals I believe are lovely, and that climax is something you rarely hear in modern music. I think I enjoy the songs most in the order they came in (GTFO > With You > The Distance). By no means do I think The Distance is a poorly written song judging by how so many people are infatuated with it. Bad music gains popularity all the time, but The Distance is far from that abyss. For me, this is not what I look for in Mariah's music and that's okay. She delivers versatility on each album and these particular songs seem to be playing different fields like she normally does. I will continue to support the song because I want to support her in general. I have been out of the mainstream music circle for quite some time so I'm not really looking for songs that appeal to the public (nor do I know what one would sound like). I will take off time from streaming GTFO to help possibly create buzz for The Distance since many lambs feel like this one is a hit. Can't wait for the new album - it's promising. Still not over "go and stay at your friend's house or something".

Positivity (84,705) by Ronnie from California
I somewhat have stopped being interested to negative lambs' repetitive arguments that seem to consume their every thought regarding (what they believe other lambs label her as) "the infallible Mariah". We do not think Mariah is perfect but we do not focus on things that we have already accepted and no longer get upset about. And after systematically lip-syncing for a decade (+), one should have moved on long ago. I am open to criticism but constant negativity that dwindles in vain irks me. We see enough of that "bull" outside of the fanbase. I sought lambily communities (not just on these archives) to escape the repetitive goats, who are ironically just as prefictable as Mariah herself. For anyone interested, I'm in a lambily group chat that is a nice balanced mix of perspectives.

History repeats itself (84,351) by Ronnie from California
Don't get me wrong, it is a good song. But by no means is this lead single material. I would be perfectly happy with this song as album filler. Regardless, I can really appreciate how ambitious it was and I think it's the right track for a revival of her masterful ability to orchestrate complex interweving melodies. It seems like the melodies she is choosing are not as "mathematically" impressive but I imagine it's due to a combination of vocal fatigue, discouragement, and overall stress. It appears like Andrew was right and GTFO was supposed to be lead. Idk if it is her or the record labels that refuse to break the ILT, WBT 1-2 punch? Or does she just not know her market? Does she think she has the power to change the market? The only question left: is the album like GTFO or With You?
