That's not boycott or illegal. You don't have to listen to those playlists. Most people have their own playlists anyway, and Spotify is not the only streaming platform. Brenda wasn't at the top of some of those playlists before. Was she being boycotted since AIWFCIY hit number one? I thought we had moved on from the paranoia lambs tend to have about some mega powerful entity coming for Mariah. AIWFIY and RATCT are the Christmas hits they are because millions of people love them and got them there. You can discount, you can gift, you can pray, you can throw a lambtrum, but all that won't make a song popular or hit if people don't like it. |

What is "special guest star status" (I ask with a due sense of exhaustion and dread)? I've posted on this board hundreds, if not thousands, of times.
Chill out. You get a tad cringe, now and then. But mostly now. And always then. |

Carole King was determined to work with MC after she declined to cover YMMFLANW. So, she flew out to New York anyway and If It's Over was born. I love the highs and lows of her vocal delivery and orgasmic climax is unbelievable and breathtaking both live and on the album. Just one more song like this would garner her 20th number one. This time let's get Sia or ILYA and Ryan Tedder to fly out New York and create a masterpiece. |

Oh Santa original vs JHud/Ariana version (104,370)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
(Sunday 3 December 2023; 17:56)
I have always thought MC did the collaboration with Ariana and JHud just for a cute festive moment to promote the Apple Music special. They probably recorded their parts separately in different studios and sent it to MC. I don't think the collaboration made the final cut for the special. I never watched the special all the way through because I cringed how thin sounding her voice was on the songs. |

What's everyone's opinion on this? It's interesting that the JHud/Ariana collab didn't do much to the song. I personally thought their voices didn't blend so well, and there's no chemistry between them on the video. It wasn't cute or engaging. But we said the same with the AIWFCIY collab with Bieber. |

Hello Eric. Thank you for all that you do to keep the board going strong all of these years. I noticed that you were still posting until 9pm Eastern time last night. Usually the last post is 6pm Eastern. Thank you for keeping the hot topic of "We lost #1" going way into the night. It was a fun way to end the night.
And what a year it has been for topics on the board. Can you think about posting on New Year's Eve the top 15 topics of 2023 with the most replies and likes? Just this November and December alone, I know Mariah vs. Brenda, We lost #1, and Emotions formula will make the list. Also, can you post the top posters for 2023? Andrew returned back in August (or was it September?) and tried to take my special guest star status. Lol. |

What are some things that some of you have done because you saw Mariah did or liked? I have a few so I'll go first. When Mariah listed Four Christmases as one of her favorite Holiday movies I had to watch it even though I don't care much for Reese Witherspoon or Vince Vaughn. It was an okay movie. Also I bought her AIWFCIY plushie after I saw hers on her mantle or something like that on one of her social media posts. It was so fetch. |

Wow. We certainly did she this happening two weeks ago. If MC had done some special with AIWFCIY this year like a duet with Kelly Clarkson, she would have had nothing to worry about. I wish she would collaborate with other artists like she used to do. The next four weeks are going to be an intense battle for the top spot. And Tyla, water girl just dropped her new song On and On. She could take the streams away too from both songs by New Year's Eve. |

MC was going for a more polished than over-produced second album. I think that she accomplished that. Tommy probably was not too happy with the end result and album sales. I am sure he told MC after MTV Unplugged that she needs a huge pop album for her third album. Hence, Music Box was created and fulfilled Tommy's desires. Her creativity just got better and better after MB. She better bring it with MC16. |

Robert-Anthony, the music industry doesn't have much control over anything anymore. The music industry as we knew it, it's forever gone. They can't influence streaming platforms to block users from playing the music they like, radio just goes along with what's trending or they stay out of the game. Fans have more control, instead of calling like crazy to request, we just go and stream, everything is way different. As I have stated, these two songs have legs of their own, the one that makes it to number one will be based on its own merit and promotional push on big events. AIWFCIY is a pure number 1, people keep buying it after all these years, they keep playing it and streaming it, no gimmicks. If Mariah really wanted, she could break The Beatles' record, just three great collabs with Drake, Ariana and Taylor Swift should take her there. I don't really care for that record though, the way things are, Taylor will eventually top them both. |

The music business isn't a sweet easy going industry. Every artist will tell you that including sweet Dolly Parton. Record executives aren't playing nice when they are promoting a song to get it to number #1. There are some underhanded strategies being done behind the scenes to make it happen at the UMG executive offices. If RATCT goes to number #1, a huge television media frenzy will be made about it that week. Just my two cents from Texas. |

What in the actual [censored]? It's not a conspiracy. It's called marketing a song that's already popular and trying to get it to #1. The same way Mariah markets AIWFCIY every year is no different then Brenda Lee putting out a music video for her song. Um, didn't MC make 4 videos for AIWFCIY? And whoever wrote the message "now that they slapped a blonde wig on Brenda" - are you serious? Stop trying to make a conspiracy out of everything when there is none. |

I have no idea when or why it happened. There are many other great Christmas songs way better than it. The first time I listened to it was last year because she made it to the second spot. For me it is just a very basic song, that's all. I don't hate it, just don't care for it. |

Mariah vs Brenda (104,318)

Thanks for the update, Edward. Seems like there is a considerable effort this year to keep MC from getting to number one or staying number one for multiple weeks this year. UMG is Brenda Lee's record label. They are really going all out this year with this huge promotional push to celebrate RATCT's 65th anniversary. But why now after 4 years of AIWFCIY being the number one Christmas song?
Well I think I know why. Some people in the music and television industry are tired of hearing MC being called the queen of Christmas. It started when MC wanted to trademark the Queen Of Christmas last year. She angered Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan. Many in the music and television industry were angered by MC's trademark move as well. So, I feel this is their payback for MC attempting to take the queen of Christmas all for herself and from sweet Darlene Love. Everyone already feels sorrow for her how Phil Spector used her voice and she never was publicly credited on a lot the songs she did for him. Phil Spector controlled her early career and was content to leave her uncredited on the songs he did for him.
Do you think that I have hit on something? |

According to Talk of the Charts predictions, AIWFCIY will be number one next week, but judging by the numbers, RATCT might top it the week after. As I said, it's going to be an interesting journey for both songs. Maybe they'll alternate at the top, but Brenda would set a record almost impossible to break. Should she hit numbe one, RATCT would be the song with the longest time to get to the top spot, 65. She can have it though. Other than that, Brenda didn't write her song, so she doesn't make money from it really. We definitely need Mariah to dethrone Lil Nas. |

Emotions formula (104,307)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
(Thursday 30 November 2023; 21:50)
Great reflection post, Terna. I was just thinking she could revisit the Emotions album with her current voice without all of the vocal acrobatics that made us know that MC had a 5-octave range. I have always thought since its release, Spell My Name was Toni Braxton revisiting her sophomore album, Secrets. So, it worked for Toni. Maybe it could work for MC. I know she has something special coming to the Lambs in 2024. I just don't want 5 songs written with Daniel Moore. I like him as a musician, but not him writing 5 songs with MC that sound like Portrait. |

I beg to differ, I don't need her trying to revisit an old formula, "Emotions" was also a near sophomore slump that just wasn't as strong as the first record, neither were the tunes even as memorable like the debut. Mariah is talented enough and creative enough to come up with something fresh, music genres out her comfort zone and especially working with newer producers who have their fingers on the current pulse of music and where it's going, for a fresh sound. Secondly her singing style is dated, too decorated she needs to tone down the girlie "curliecues" and sing straight, mainly with her chest voice, for balance and contrast, so that when she does falsett, it is a breath of fresh air (she did this with great pleasant effect in the late 90's), it just got over bearing from the Charmbracelet era, was too much and very off putting. Her vocal delivery has to be spot on for this new album. I do agree that she needs a return to adult contemporary ballads but sung in her range - "Through the Rain" suffered from this - a beautiful ballad, a very memorable melody but sung too high that the audience cannot sing along. (This is why Adele works so well.) Finally, a change of hair colour or return to her brunette curls - the former would be preferred. Get that tired blonde color retired at least for an era, it ages you 15 minutes. |

I would rather have a 10 to 12 track album next year. It has been too long since we have had new music. Also, I am curious what she will talk about in the new songs since she has been writing with Daniel Moore. And there is probably a good chance that Roc and Roe will be singing on a track. The Rarities 2 can come in 2025. |

Her natural alto voice is shining through more when she speaks. Her voice reminds me of her 90s interviews. I think that a vocal coach or Mary Ann told her to limit her intake of alcohol this summer and see how your vocal range returns. It was evidence on most of Caution. I am anticipating that we will get more of her alto range with heavier tones and less belting on the new album. |

All three performances were absolutely awful. Jennifer Hudson and Patti Labelle plodded through songs - which are supposed to build in momentum - only for them both to climax in the most awful screeching. It's very easy to see why Mariah sold records in the way she did. And the less said about the lady singing with Boyz II Men the better.
Mariah's speech endearing. She was unassuming, funny, concise and beautiful. Her speaking voice is noticeably a lot deeper than before. I think she is now going through a lot more vocally than previously realised. Despite that, it was a good showing from her. |

Jack Harlow is popular today because of his song What's Poppin went viral on Tik Tok. Lil Wayne, Tory Lanez, and Da Baby jumped on the remix and reached #2 on the Hot 100. He got a Grammy nomination and XXL Magazine named him apart of the 2020 Freshman class. His new song Lovin On Me is a R&B sample of 1995 Cadillac Dale's song Whatever (Bass Solique) and it is another Tik Tok viral sensation. |

What a welcome surprise for Jennifer Hudson, Coco Jones and Boyz II Men, and the legendary Miss Patti Labelle to sing for MC. I loved all of their renditions especially Miss Patti's beautiful performance of Love Takes Time. I loved how JHud sang VOL in her own way and making MC smile. Coco Jones seemed nervous and kind of messed up the first verse to me with the wrong lyrics and some humming of the words. Maybe I'm wrong about her performance. No one will ever be able to sing MC's One Sweet Day like her. |
