Growing trend of R&B artists (106,355)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|
|
There seems to be a growing trend among R&B artists who are not releasing albums anymore after a decade of hit albums. MC has joined Rihanna, Trey Songz, SWV, En Vogue, Tamar Braxton, Keyshia Cole, Donnell Jones Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Jennifer Hudson, and Joe in this club. There are many reasons why they are not releasing albums anymore. It makes me wonder if R&B airplay will continue to remain only on the Urban AC charts for many years to come. Rising neo-soul artists like Sir, Lucky Daye and Mahalia will never have major success on the pop charts like those artists who paved the way for them 20 years.

Last year, we got the Honey remixes on gold vinyl, It's A Wrap vinyl, and Music Box 30th anniversary CD and vinyl. She has to release something, right?

CD physical releases are not selling anymore (106,348)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|

I went to my least favorite Target store yesterday after work to buy Dua Lipa's Radical Optinism. And of course, they couldn't find 1 of the 4 copies it said they had on their website. So while I waited for the team member to look in the back, the Swifty display was packed full on a main aisle endcap. I thought to myself that consumers just don't buy CDs anymore. I noticed last summer that Target cut back on their CD selection. They have even stopped their Target exclusive compilation CDs like the iHeart Radio Ball one from 2013. I wouldn't be surprised if they stop selling CDs like Best Buy. However, vinyl is still hot as ever at the small independent record shops. I have a couple in Austin that I buy from that are staying opened because of vinyl.

#2s (106,343)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
Just to change up the air a bit. Yall know I'm a big chart junkie. Mariah is still the queen of #1. It always amazes me the songs that miss #1. Mariah has four #2s in her catalogue. Can't Let Go, Endless Love, Loverboy and Shake It Off. Some of my favorite songs by other artists are #2s. En Vogue never had a number one but all three of the first singles from their albums were #2s. Hold On, My Lovin (Never Gonna Get It), Don't Let Go (Love). Other #2s I regularly play Jewel You Were Meant For Me, Deborah Cox's Nobody's Supposed To Be Here, Whitney Houston ft Faith and Kelly Price Heartbreak Hotel, Madonna's Frozen, Material Girl and Express Yourself. Destiny's Child Survivor, Toni Braxton's He Wasn't Man Enough. Weird fact: Missy Elliot's Work It spent 10 weeks at #2 without ever hitting the top spot.

Adressed to Infinity haters (106,345)

The comical lyrics caught a lot of fans off guard. The corny like fritos lyric was not what we were used to from MC who taught us new vocabulary with every new song.

This is specially addressed to the Infinity haters. Can you explain to me what you dislike? It went to #82 on Billboard, it was well reviewed but critics, and the orchestration what brilliant. I'm curious why people that hate it, dislike it? My only personal grip is that the orchestration is so hopeful, and the lyrics are diss.

It's so strange you put a post about this because I was going to ask the same thing. I watched a YouTube filming of her recent shows, someone uploaded a hd version which was pretty good. Anyway, it felt so unnerving watching her constantly reading the words, and it's not like she can't sing at the minute because she was putting teasers out of her singing before the shows. I think about halfway through she's also signing pictures and she's concentrating so much that she stops moving her lips and the playback carries on, she then walks off and is obviously annoyed. I think it was during Always Be My Baby. Not only that her recent Facebook video she was reading a prompt when usually she's just winged those type of candid videos. I'm hoping it's not something more serious but rather her team trying to come up with ideas to make it seem like she's not struggling with her voice so much nowadays. Unless it's been a tactic to try and help her preserve her voice if she has a new album planned, she maybe doesn't want to over exert herself to save it for promo so she's lipsyncing more.

More Taylor (106,312)

Maybe tomorrow we can get back to MC. I was thinking today that MC could release anything this year to satisfy me. She could release the Rarities II, a remix album from 2003-2018, or the Butterfly Lounge. I would be happy with a surprise duet with Lucky Daye this fall. I messaged him and MC on X yesterday about when a collaboration was coming and he liked my post. Sounds promising, right?

More Taylor (106,311)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Your post just brought me back. The constant invocation of the race card feels tired and overused, at this point it's kind of slickening.
Mariah Carey once held the same formidable position in the music industry that Taylor Swift now occupies. During her reign, Mariah stood tall at the pinnacle of success while other esteemed artists gradually receded from the spotlight. Such is the cycle of life in the music world. Mariah's dominance coincided with a generation that grew up immersed in her timeless melodies, perhaps unaware of the legendary artists who paved the way before her.
While I may not personally resonate with Taylor's music, it's important to acknowledge the undeniable facts: her numbers speak volumes, much like Mariah's did in the '90s. Though I wouldn't personally invest in Taylor's work due to my own tastes, it's clear that millions around the globe find immense appeal in her music. This is undeniably her moment to shine.
As fans, it's natural to root for our favorites and celebrate their successes. However, it's equally important to do so without disparaging other artists. Mariah herself has faced unwarranted criticism in the past, and as fans, we should understand the importance of uplifting our idols without tearing down others.
Man you all have a great day.

Why is there no JD on Butterfly? (106,305)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|
|
We know why there is no JD on Glitter and Memoirs. But why didn't MC record any tracks with JD for Butterfly. Was she exclusively seeking a New York hip hop and rap sound that only New York and East coast producers could only have given her? Was she paying homage to her home city with the Butterfly album? Maybe that is what she needs to do for MC16 is to focus on a New York sound with a live band. Go back Proctor's Theater and SNL to promote the album.

Will the Mariah Carey story ever be told? (106,300)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|
|
I hope MC allows her story to be told for the big screen. Her story needs to be told with all the good, bad, and ugly. The opening song should be Vision of Love. The emotional moment song should be My Saving Grace. The redemption song should be We Belong Together. The closing song should be Fly Like A Bird. Hopefully, it will happen in the next 10 years.

MC and Big Jim Wright (106,299)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|
|
I really think Big Jim Wright helped MC tap into a side of her soulful writing ability that we had never seen before prior to 2005. Songs like Circles, I Wish You Knew, Cry., Camouflage, and FLAB are some of MC's most soulful songs. Have you ever listened Cry. and Camouflage back to back? There is a sad love story told about the break-up Mariah's and Nick's marriage in those two gems. These two gems remind me of 70's R&B band L.T.D.'s Love Ballad and Where Did We Go Wrong? I love all of the vocal flaws in Circles. I Wish You Knew reminds me of why MC's writing skills are impeccable. FLAB reminds me growing up in a Baptist church when the choir director tells the musicians to cut the music because he knows that the song leader is about to take the church "there".

Mimi L. I couldn't agree more. No more huge eras from her for sure. She has done what she wanted to. You can tell there's been a major change in her since Caution. We don't know what's going on, I doubt we ever will but I'm happy she's still there in whatever capacity she is and she hasn't retired.
I'm happy I saw her live at the Caution tour. She was animated, happy and full of life. I could barely tell when she was lipping from the audience but she did sing a beautiful snippet of "Slipping Away".
I strongly believe that she will release the projects she's been working on. Either one or two or all of the ones she's been talking about since covid, anybody's guess.

A Daydream release in 2024 (106,286)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I've come to accept that Mariah won't have another big era. Let alone anything remotely close to TEOM. She no longer has the drive or hunger to prove herself and that's not bashing her, it's just the circumstance. Back then she had the fire because she was still young and people had written her off and disposed of her all because her ex husband decided to be messy. She had to reclaim her throne. Now she's settled into her legend status, she has her 2 babies, she is earning a lot from touring. She has nothing left to prove so she won't go as hard. Plus the promo aspect. Nowadays promo is everything. People have short attention spans and you gotta really set yourself apart by doing creative promo and I don't think Mariah has that team. In fact we don't known who her team is. Even her social media is not at the level of someone of her status. I was living in delulu land for a while hoping for one last hurrah haha but I think I have now accepted this is the new reality of icon. If she does prove me wrong I would be the happiest but I doubt it. I just hope she's mentally in a good space and we get the chance to enjoy some new material when she's ready. Whether it's an album or collabs.

It has been a great discussion this week about Taylor and insight into this whole Swifty phenonenon. We can't deny Taylor is riding high off roads paved from our true trailblazer and trendsetter MC. I am really ready for Mimi to comeback one last time with her most successful album since TEOM. I know she has at least one more left in her. Where are you Mike Will Made It? Mimi needs you again.

Hahaha you know being a lamb I pay extra attention to lyrics. Yes, I know the interview you are talking about, it was a few years back when her career was going through a decline. I agree most artists try to maximize their gains at their peak and yes Mariah used to release albums almost every year for the first 5 years and every 2-3 years after that, but no artist released as much as Taylor did in the last 2 years. 2 re-recordings, 2 new albums and a tour. Also hard launching her relation with Kelce haha. I'm reading many articles where people are saying it's too much too soon.

Mary J Blige has 9 Grammys and 2 Oscar nominations. People don't snicker when you say her name. And listen Lee, I think you think I'm arguing for MJB. I'm not. There's not a damn thing Mary can do better than MC. Sing, write, dress, give face. MC wins. What I was saying is that the industry respects her more and that's why she was selected over MC. And again a lot of this is MCs fault. She has Tyra and Heidi Klum on stage doing her makeup. She's more interested in her dullard damsel diva than being an artist. She's laying in bed for a portion of her concert. The optics aren't there for an iconic artist.

MC just needs to release a fire album to get recognized by the music industry. She doesn't write the brilliant songs like she used too. If she would find songwriting partners like Madicin (Kenny Lattimore) or Daryl Simmons (Never Forget You) and write some R&B slow jams and love songs, then she would get back on top of the charts. What is it going to take for MC to get back to those brilliant songs?

Possibly. But there is not another up and coming female pop artist who can take her place right now. I think she has at least 10 more years of a popularity high. Don't let her star in a major movie with a hit soundtrack. That would add five more years. Lol.

Mary J. Blige has had a lot of high profile pop duets during her 30 years in the music business. Mary's duets with U2, George Michael, Sting, Elton John, Santana, Ray Charles, Maroon 5, Rod Stewart, Andre Bocelli, and Quincy Jones have broaden her appeal to the music industry executives as a whole. I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame committee looks at that too. That is what MC's career has lacked.

A Daydream release in 2024 (106,259)
by Robert-Anthony from United States

|
I often wonder how a Daydream album would sell in 2024 if it was released in 2024. Would it sell a million copies plus during in its first week and break Spotify records? Would Fantasy, One Sweet Day and ABMB break streaming and iTunes records? I picked Daydream because that is when MC's career went into overdrive and her popularity increased. Tortured Poets Department seems to be Taylor Swift's Daydream. Her popularity is so high right now. She could release a David Guetta and Zedd TPD remix album in the Fall and it would sell 1.2 million plus copies too.
