Daydream 30 - reflections (114,226) by Bill from the UK Okay so. I've had some time with the anniversary edition now and can post my thoughts properly. In terms of general ranking amongst her anniversary releases, Music Box is still, by far, the best. I would rank this as a respectable second. Brace yourself, it's a long read for anyone interested in what some anonymous loser on a Mariah forum thinks. Part 1 - The Remaster So the album has been remastered. My first listening experience was on my EarPods so I reserved judgement until I'd listened to it properly on my hi-fi and then my good headphones. Perhaps it is because I have listened to the album some 230,000 times since its release, but the remaster can be jarring at times. Fantasy seems somewhat murky now and is missing the bright vibrancy of the original. The low harmonies in the chorus being pushed forward in the mix, along with the bells being more prominent changes the overall feel of the record. Another noticeable change was with Looking In, and how the guitar was much more pronounced than the gentle background strums in the original. It is now almost in line with the lead vocal which is an odd choice. On the plus side, more vocal nuances are noticeable in tracks like Long Ago and Melt Away, but all told I prefer the original over the remaster. And this isn't me just stating the original because I've spent most of my life with it; the remaster of Rainbow is miles better than the trash output of the original album and is my absolute go-to when I play that album (always skipping Did I Do That of course). The Amazon intros were okay, but as Jamie said she seemed somewhat spaced out and lethargic in her recollections, didn't really offer any new tidbits or nuggets about the songs, and glossed over half the album by not addressing half of the tracks. So, it's not a "track by track" commentary, more a handful of 30 second soundbites about the main tracks. Would have been nice for the opening and closing statements on the album to be longer and reflect where she was in her life at that point, where her head was at, her career, what she was aiming to achieve, initial concepts versus the final output, how it's aged in her mind, etc., especially as it was recorded with the backdrop of her marriage collapsing. Part 2 - The Remixes So the big players are here as expected - Fantasy with ODB as well as the Def Club Mix (not a patch on Dreamlover but a close second), Always Be My Baby with Da Brat, and the Chucky Remix of One Sweet Day, Good to see something completely new and original with the Eric Kupper mix of Underneath the Stars. Part 3 - The B-sides and Demos It's a shame there was no surprises like Music Box's Workin' Hard and My Prayer. Instead we have One Night and Slipping Away from The Rarities and nothing else. The acapellas I've already written about, though good to hear an extra 30 seconds of ad libbing that was previously hidden. The writing session demos are excellent, and the real highlight of the project. Would have been absolutely amazing to have this for every track. Part 4 - The Live Tracks Here's where I have a mild annoyance. I'm not sure why the MSG concert is a vinyl-exclusive. No reason why it couldn't form part of the digital release. I understand the CD cutting some tracks out to not seep into a third disc, but the digital album can be limitless, so that's a real shame to not have such a fantastic concert released to stream and download. The tracks selected for the digital release (Fantasy and OSD from MSG) were both previously released on singles at the time, as was Forever from Tokyo Dome, and later Underneath the Stats from Tokyo on The Rarities. The real keepers though are Open Arms and ABMB from Rotterdam Ahoy. Fantastic recordings and vocals, but it's annoyed me that the full concert is professionally available to be released (it was filmed too), but remains locked up. I understand keeping Daydream tracks on the anniversary edition, but she did some incredible versions of her other songs during that tour that ought to be put out there. So yes. Overall I am happy and grateful to see such a wonderful album get the anniversary treatment, but a few marks were missed when compared against Music Box. I am now hungry for the debut and Emotions to not be ignored and get some treatment very soon (35th/40th) as I have no doubt, especially with the debut, there is a wealth of material to unearth and celebrate. I've uploaded my music to a new laptop and none of the files carried over the artwork. iTunes does populate some correctly but totally misses the mark on others. Google images is a joke now so that's no help. I remember coming across a site that had press releases and pictures of Mariah broken down by year but my searches come up with nothing. Her music used to be quite nice and catchy, but after Reputation or maybe Lover, everything she released sounds more or less the same to me. Taylor Swift (114,040) by Randy from USA Even though I don't post much more anymore, I still troll this board to catch reactions, I'm shocked no one has anything to say about Taylor Swift's 15th number one. Has everyone just resigned MC is not gonna hold on to her record? Ima be honest, when I used to spar against a Whitney fan about MC having more number ones. He used to say, yeah but Whitney's are known. I could make the argument Didn't We Almost Have It All isn't well known. For MC Thank God I Found You is obscure. But with Taylor Swift and Drake, I maybe could name 4 a piece. Maybe it's generational. I mean The Beatles are musicians, singers and songwriters. Mariah was a masterful vocalist and is still a killer songwriter. Whitney is probably the greatest live singer of all time. MJ and Madonna are American cultural iconic figures as much as Coke and Levi's. I just don't see Taylor Swift, Rihanna or Drake anywhere near as important. It's a wrap (113,989) by TheButterflyReturns from United States It certainly does seem like Mariah has been in a pattern of "arrested development" since the "Butterfly" era. She has worked with different producers but they're overall from the same musical lane. There have been rare exceptions - "Right to Dream" with Willie Nelson, "Giving Me Life" with Blood Orange, "Beautiful" with Miguel. From where I sit, Mariah seems unwilling to step outside her comfort zone and content to release a throwaway album here and there while concentrating energy on legacy releases and the massive royalty checks coming in at Christmas time. Music doesn't seem to bring her much joy these days, so I wonder if it might be an opportune time to attempt acting again even if it's just Made for TV movies or a periodic TV show role. She did good work in "Wisegirls", "Precious", and "Tennessee". I'd rather see her do that for a while than just watching her lip sync past hits joylessly in overpriced stadium shows year after year. As much as I'd love to hear new music from Mariah, I'm pretty satisfied if HFIA was her last original studio album, she really gave her all with what she's still got. And the song HFIA itself sounds like a perfect closure from her to us fans, musically and lyrically. Of course she can still release new compilations, live albums, anniversary editions, soundtracks, concept albums (jazz, grunge, Christmas, covers, whatever), but if there's not gonna be an MC17, I see no harm. And her writing skills are nowhere where they're used to be, and that is probably from her medication literally blocking her brain. Most bipolar artists get creative during (hypo)mania episodes and the medication work on blocking those (among with the depressive ones). Mariah knows it but can't do anything about it, I guess that explains the lack of energy we see. Trust me, I know the difference between when she's singing live, when she's using backing tracks, and when she's fully lip-syncing. The Summertime Ball performance proved she can still sing and entertain at an elite level. Critics often focus on old viral clips or isolated moments. Drake (113,838) by Giovanni from USA I'm no fan of Drake but he is projected to do very well with his new album/albums. His sales and his streaming numbers are good and he has gotten decent reviews on the music. I think Here For It All might have sold more and done better if the music was better. I think the album served its purpose as being therapeutic for Mariah but she needs something on the level of Caution at least. I don't expect her to sell like she used to but just make an album that will make the remaining fans she has left happy. I think most of us were over the album fast because the music wasn't the best or the voice wasn't the best, but it was still decent. It did get some success with "In your feelings" and "Jesus I do". I just came across a passage where Diane Dimond lists celebrity cases where someone attempted or proposed a guardianship/conservatorship and Mariah's name was mentioned alongside B.B. King, Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen and others. Has anyone else read or heard anything about this? It doesn't surprise me that someone tried this against Mariah and it seems most likely to have occurred during the 2001 hospitalizations or the 2016 incident. Stella seems the most likely culprit in my opinion. Dimond's book makes it seem like the system is very easy to weaponize for financial gain. And then I came across this video and watched it. Some comments about her are not nice, but one thing is for sure. Whether people acknowledge it or not, Brenda is instrumental in Mariah's career. The Teddy Riley conversation was probably the first manager incident that caused some friction between JD and MC. I just wonder if their relationship has truly been the same after JD walked away as MC's manager. Caution could been bigger if JD had produced at least three songs on Caution.
