Robert you're honestly such a sweetheart and we can tell you only hope for the best for Mariah and same for me I really want her to shut everyone up again. Also I completely agree with what you said about single choices. E=MC2 roll out will forever haunt me. She was coming off the high off the most iconic album of the 2000s and had a banger like TMB (with a bomb video) only to then release "Bye Bye" and ISIL? When she had "Migrate" which not only charted with no promo, but was exactly the kind of music that was dominating the radio and clubs in 08, plus had T-Pain and he was huge during that era. Migrate would have been the older sister of "It's like that" - a feel good, this night is mine, I'm feeling myself kind of song. (In today's climate it would sound a bit dated but 08 it would be bomb.) Then "I'll be loving you long time" should have been a summer anthem with proper promo. Next she had "I'm that Chick" and "Side Effects" that could have been singles. I will forever wonder why LA Reid picked the other songs . Don't get me wrong Bye Bye is a good song I listen to it, it gets me emotional because I can relate it to losing my grandmom, but you've got an album full of bangers that are single worthy and you kill the momentum with Bye Bye. Jeez. They tried too hard to recreate the "fun record followed by a big ballad" approach of TEOM, instead they should have made it the year of Mariah where she dominated all seasons - TMB to start bring some heat to the winter months, Migrate to kick of Spring, IBLYLT with the Summer of Mariah takeover and then Side Effects for the fall. And maybe For the Record for Winter again? Maybe even Love Story. After that it's fair game, you want to close with Bye Bye go for it lol.

For me her voice was so effortless. So strong. So powerful. Maybe that's what Eddie was going for. But yeah, the song by itself is kinda bland. And don't get me started on Michael Bolton. Ugh. He butchers so many good traditional Christmas songs. I just can't with him.

Since Tommy the only time I've really seen her really happy and herself in a relationship is with Nick Cannon. All the others I feel that she's been out of control mental health wise. Now she's single I feel she's got herself back stable again and is focused on her art. Maybe she functions better on her own.

Do you think MC will ever date again? I worry about her being alone and not having someone in her life. DeVon Franklin would be the perfect man for MC since she has scaled back being this huge diva. He is a huge motivational speaker and he loves God. During the Christmas shows and in Aspen this December, I saw MC as a more mature woman just raising her children. Her diva persona seems to have fallen off her huge petsonality. Love has to be on her mind, though. She can't stay single forever. I hope that she starts dating again during the recording of MC16. My two cents during the start of several days of below freezing temperatures.

I love their chemistry on this song. I wonder why Columbia chose Patti over MC for the album version. Did Tommy think it was too soon for MC to have an official duet on another male's artist album? Their vocal chemistry may have been too much for him to hear before he could put that ring on her finger.

Yes I have to disagree too. I love this performance and little different ways she sings certain parts. I think maybe she was a tiny bit sick as the high note wasn't perfect but the rest I love.

I disagree. Even with the lack of resonant belts and some imperfections, she really went there vocally and took some risks. She started to dive into the other parts of her voice to sing the song. I love all the passion she poured into this performance. One of my favorites. Shakiness and all. Here is the full Love Takes Time performance that night.

I just watched. There is a snippet of new version of My All. I have listened again to Kanye's version - the lyrics and arrangements are the same. A few years ago Mariah said that she liked Kanye's version of My All and would like to perform it. Then for few years there was nothing. Now it is part of her Christmas show. I like his version, but I like the original more. The new version is called "Christmas Gospel Version".

I can't fully appreciate how and why Obsessed tanked so badly here. The song was liked far and wide, the video was constantly appearing on television for obvious reasons, and whenever I heard or hear it, people sing along with the chorus for they know it and like it. It's baffling. Any ideas?

Mariah Carey in the UK (104,559)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
Having taken off with I'll Be There, not until the Memoirs era did Mariah drop from being a pretty steady Top 10 artist. There were certainly some blips along the way, most notably releasing Butterfly as a single but Mariah for many many years was a mainstream radio listed artist. However, I'd agree that she became the source of much derision after she took her clothes off in 1997. Nobody wanted it from her. This emerging vanity aspect of her personality was quite off-putting to British people. The Heartbreaker Remix and Loverboy videos did maximum damage to her profile as did the expanding breasts which started ignoring each other sometime around 1998 into 1999.
It does all strike me as possibly a little bit unfair. Women - and girls, even - were treated very differently back then, such were the times that they would often be asked about their breasts in interviews. There is a video on YouTube of it happening to Britney when she was about 17 years old and it is uncomfortable viewing.
But with Mariah I believe she was very respected as a top-tier vocalist and she was, at the very essence of her being, a solid-bet of a hitmaker - the "Songbird Supreme", no less. That she had achieved this through sheer talent won her many fans who became confused at her need to add sex and sexuality to her career. It smacked of desperation and she was somewhat "slut-shamed".
I cannot help but often wonder what Mariah's career would be like if it was taking off in this day and age. Almost certainly she would not have endured the ridicule for having a mental health crisis but, rather, I would hope she would be, or have been, treated a lot more sympathetically.
Regardless of whataboutery, the success of her singles and her popularity whenever she visited the UK cannot be diminished and it serves to emphasise that if she has the right material and promotion she will be successful. Unfortunately, in terms of both, she has had neither for well over a decade now. The Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour needs to hit the road again.
N.b. Sorry for the essay, J-L, but I do suffer from insomnia. I gotta get me some sleep. Also, check out the chart-placing of "Obsessed", I don't recall it underperforming like that.

UK Lamb (104,551)
by Jamie from UK
| |

The UK loved early Mariah, they just didn't like the whole transition from vocalist to diva. Obviously I'm not speaking for myself as I've continued to follow Mariah. I just think for the UK in general they didn't get the transition. I think she lost a lot of mature adult fans from Butterfly onwards.

UK Lamb (104,546)

I want to ask an honest question. What does the UK Lambs need or want Mariah to do? I lived in the UK for four years. Mostly on the Welsh border by bishops, as well as London proper (your train system is the best in the world as of my experiences tbh). Why are you UK guys so hard on her? And if I hear "1993-1996, please, I maintain Mariah's most artistic, expression and performances were post 2002 , consistently". What I see Mariah from 1988-1996 is her doing a job. From 1997-present, I see an artist. If her voice broke? Who cares? It's park of her human journey, that makes her so relatable.

Vocals getting better (104,437)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|

So: "Mariah doesn't sing before she's supposed to sing on stage because she can't be bothered so people who book early shows will just have to suck up shite vocals"? How absurd.
Imagine going to see a West End musical and the talent missing notes because they didn't rehearse. Imagine going to watch a football match and your team losing badly because they didn't go to training. Imagine... well, I think the point is made.
Mariah's vocal deterioration is of her own making and people like Jamie-Luke get grief for not wanting to hand their hard-earned cash over to her for sub-par performances. Bleak, indeed.
Perhaps Mariah not getting to No.1 might give her the shock that she needs: that she has to up her game and not stand motionless, without uttering sound, expecting adulation and praise.

RATCT had been reaching the second spot for four years consecutively. It's not like the song came out of nowhere. AIWFCIY was ahead on airplay and sales. It was just 2.5 M streams. Mariah should up her game with a couple of big televised events. She needs exposure. Here in NY, I haven't heard RATCT anywhere.

Hello Eric. Thank you for all that you do to keep the board going strong all of these years. I noticed that you were still posting until 9pm Eastern time last night. Usually the last post is 6pm Eastern. Thank you for keeping the hot topic of "We lost #1" going way into the night. It was a fun way to end the night.
And what a year it has been for topics on the board. Can you think about posting on New Year's Eve the top 15 topics of 2023 with the most replies and likes? Just this November and December alone, I know Mariah vs. Brenda, We lost #1, and Emotions formula will make the list. Also, can you post the top posters for 2023? Andrew returned back in August (or was it September?) and tried to take my special guest star status. Lol.

I'm happy with the success she's had with that song already, let someone else have number 1. It's not like it's not been there already. Christmas songs are so competitive these days, but at least Mariah has a song that's considered one of the last classic Christmas songs.

Emotions formula (104,335)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|

Let's count the fillers on "Emotions" shall we? 1. "And you don't Remember" - I rarely play this song, it just isn't strong enough and is indeed one of her weaker ballads with a high note thrown in just because. 2. "So Blessed" - I personally love this song, but I also recognize it ain't no classic and quite forgettable. Even Mariah herself was like "oh please which so blessed" when the lambs made her pick an absolute favorite in a versus format a few years back. 3. "You're So Cold" - Oh my, what a waste of space a better song would've occupied and it was 5 whole minutes long, hideous. Skipped every single time. 4. "If it's Over" - Another weak ballad with a high note thrown in. This song actually is sort of disjointed, as its feel doesn't match the lyrics. It is a breakup song that sounds Gospel. With the gospel sound, one expects to hear an uplifting lyric or inspiring one, but this is dark. She got it right with "I am free" and "Anytime you need a friend". This record was also kinda what turned the general public off her high notes because the placements came across as "just because", and with such a display on the title track, the rest should've had it toned way down in the background like on "Can't Let Go". The saving grace for this album are her vocals which are top notch capturing just how powerful her instrument is.

I'll just say this, between those two records, one is on the cusp of being certified Diamond - her third if I might add, while the other still has a long way to go (the numbers never lie). There's a reason why "Vision of Love" and "Love Takes Time" were the songs chosen for the tribute - they are instantly recognizable classics (even in that time), that have stood the test of time, the kind of songs seasoned songwriters would kill to have to their credit, written by a then 19 year old a testament in itself and can only be found on the most stellar debut ever by an artist - Mariah Carey.
