She stood there dripping in pain, sang her heart out, while looking beautiful. Everyone likes the Grammys [...], but the SNL version of Butterfly is my performance.

Mariah during the Butterfly era (66,428)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|

Mariah was possibly the most beautiful person on earth during the "Butterfly" era. Seriously the woman was a goddess and her beauty was unmatched. I was going through some of her candid photos and shoots and it's mesmerizing. She had minimal makeup and was stunning. So I thought of sharing some here. This was from one of her shoots. Ethereal beauty much? This is from the same shoot and it's possibly one of my favorite shoots ever. No orange tan, no harsh contours, no wonky eyes shadows, no ugly wigs. This is one of her rare semi edgy shoots, where she played up her makeup, and although she doesn't have a long bob cut here, I think she can totally rock her. Plus how did Vogue not knock her during this time? Losers. Now for some candid moment, how is this even fair? This is one of my favorite red carpet looks from her. Everything from the hair, to the makeup to the outfit was perfect.

She isn't actually clueless, because she said she listened to "Lemonade", she listened to Rihanna's new songs, she listened to The Weeknd, Fetty Wap and many more. The problem is her stubborn attitude when it comes to change. She is not willing to make changes unless she is the one starting something. Like with the "Fantasy" remix she started a new trend. So unless she is starting something new, she refuses to follow trends. She has said before I think, that she doesn't follow trends. But sometimes there's nothing wrong with following trends for 1-2 songs and release them as singles to attract the attention of the GP and then lure them into the album where she can include songs which she is more comfortable with. If she wants another successful era, she has to really break out and do something that she wouldn't do otherwise. But if she doesn't want it then we'll get more MIAMs, which for many reasons didn't get much attentions and then ultimately we don't hear her sing that album live anymore. It'll probably get ignored like "Glitter" from now on. (Clarifying here that I'm not saying MIAM is a bad album, I'm just saying there isn't anything there that she didn't do before, except #Beautiful.) "Infinity" would go unacknowledged by her too if she wasn't bound by the Vegas contract to use it in promos. Plus that's her most recent song so she is using it in promos since she already ignores all the songs from MIAM, if she had to choose any other song, she'd have to pick one from Memoirs.

I agree, Marissa. She has to drop Jermaine point blank period. She has to work with new writers and producers that will push her to take risks and get her out of her comfort zone. The problem is, Mariah has gotten so comfortable with Jermaine and her other long time collaborators that it's causing her to lack creativity and growth as a singer/songwriter. She is constantly trying to remake her older music and it just comes off as sounding dated and quite basic. She has to let go of her ego and get in the studio with new writers and producers, if not I can't see her new music doing well at all. It's funny because I was just listening to Breakdown and thinking just how fresh and current it sounds. It sounded so authentic and effortless as well, nothing like her recent records. She truly was at her creative peak during that time. Anywho, with that being said I really don't see any of this actually happening, especially seeing her in this current state. We can only hope she eventually realizes it's no longer the 90's/early 00's and her old formula just isn't gonna work. It's unfortunate because she honestly seems clueless of just how much the music industry has changed and it's not like she actually has a manager that has experience in the music industry.

After almost 20 years, Butterfly is always her best album. The videos are great. The story behind all three videos (Honey, Butterfly, My All) told us that the production was not half-cooked ideas. The Roof, with all the simplicity (limo, rain, rooftop) became one of her best music video ever. From the album cover to the productions to the live performances (my fav is Butterfly in SNL), Butterfly deserved its 20th anniversary celebration next year. Columbia should released more singles commercially to accompany the album. 8 months gap between Honey and My All was a total waste. They should released Close My Eyes in between or just push Butterfly to the top after Honey. Before its upcoming sweet 20 next year, let us celebrate Emotions' 25th birthday.

Getting MC back to the top of the charts (66,422)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
In my opinion, Mariah only has 3 musical routes that she can take to get back to the top of the charts in today's musical climate without compromising her musical integrity are: an infectious pop summer jam, a sultry, baby-making song a la The Weeknd's "Earned It" or a raw, honest stripped down love song a la Hello by Adele. Everything else is bullshit. Another "hip-pop" collaboration isn't going to cut it because she keeps working with here today, gone tomorrow rappers. People don't realize that the Fantasy remix and IKWYW worked for MC, not just because she was working with rappers, but because she was working with legendary, one-of-a-kind, hip-hop veterans. If she's not gonna get people of that caliber, I say forget it. I'm tired of half-assed wannabe Fantasy remix revivals. I'm fine with MC doing a love song as a single but she must (caps) let go of this WBT formula that has yet to get her another #1 for a ballad since then. WBT was great but times have changed and she needs to take a new approach. When Mariah did step out of her comfort zone, we got the brilliance of Meteorite. As we could see with VOL, the Fantasy remix and Meteorite, when Mariah gets into that trailblazing state of mind, the music is untouchable. When she sticks with formulas and creates songs that remind her of her past work, it's basically a guarantee that the given song won't even break the top 20 on the charts.

I never said that. It is well known that Tommy didn't want to release Butterfly because of the subject matter and that he sabotaged Glitter. Mariah has made some mistakes. Her decision to barely raise her voice above a whisper during the recording of Charmbracelet, releasing Triumphant, hiring Stella, and allowing unflattering images to be uploaded to her social media accounts to name a few. Almost forgot to mention still working with KB and refusing to hire a stylist with style. Unlike you I focus on the positives.

Butterfly is my favourite song ever, along with Always Be My Baby and Close My Eyes and... Tatally agree with you about the promotion. Yet, for some weird reasons I believe Butterfly is a masterpiece because it didn't extremely well critically, it did well in terms of sales but less than Daydream or Music Box. I believe that the fact that it did very well but not extremely well allowed it to be considered a critical masterpiece. It's still an album of reference. The fact that, even the promotion was a struggle, kinda went with the theme of the album. Mariah was everywhere in 1997/1998. inescapable.

Good to know I wasn't the only one mad when they switched The One for Boy. I like Boy, but I don't love it and I know The One would have been better. I also love the remix. They utilized the Goodbye Love sample by Guy to the fullest and it came out great imo. Whatever they decide to do for the Empire soundtrack I just hope it's a good song. Esther Dean kind of caters to the younger audience, but Rodney is versatile and I think can help cater to all audiences (maybe lol).

So basically everything that has ever gone wrong in Mariah's world is somebody else's fault to you. There's a word for that. Anyway. Bro, are you the guy in Infinity who is the other side of the street? Either that or you're in her closet sniffing her smalls. I'm betting the latter. But enlighten. If it's true, it's very cool. Very very cool.

I'm still upset that Tommy didn't properly release Butterfly. Butterfly peaked in the 20's on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and the video was in heavy rotation on MTV, VH1, and BET. If it were released after Billboard's rule change it would have been her twelfth #1. Butterfly is one of her best ballads and it's her signature song.

Hey, RJJ 12. I like how they tried to downplay the scandal. What goes around comes around. Ja Rule and Irv Gotti's reign ended two years later when 50 cent murdered Ja on record. Jennifer is a talented comedic actress. She's at her best in romantic comedies like Maid in Manhattan but her film career stalled a few years later as well. She recently scored a modest hit at the US box office with The Boy Next Door and her television series Shades Of Blue was renewed for a second season despite lackluster ratings and horrible reviews. Her last big hit was Get Right which she stole from Usher. Her recent hit songs were hits because of her collaborators, Benny, and AI. I haven't attended her Vegas residency but from the videos I've seen Mariah's is superior. Jennifer has the better stage costumes (wardrobe) but she's a darling of the fashion industry and has an amazing stylist. Perez Hilton said he learned from Jennifer's team that she was upset with him when he said Mariah's show was better than hers. Karma.

Empire single (66,413)
by Marissa from USA

I'm glad Mariah's putting out a song that will basically promote itself by being on Empire, but I hate the fact that Jussie/Jamal's goat vocals have to be a part of the track. His vibrato is out of control. The only male singer I really want Mariah to collaborate with is The Weeknd. That would be perfect.

All these cool ideas will only come from Mariah's fans. LA would just re-release it with a "Butterfly 12th Anniversary" in gold writing. If they do it, they should take the suggestions you made. But do they really re-release stuff for 12th anniversaries? Isn't it usually 10th or 20th or 25th? I could be wrong but I'm here for the ideas you mentioned. Butterfly is a timeless album. So many classic. I will forever be mad that the gorgeous "Breakdown" video didn't get the attention it deserves.
