Why "One Sweet Day" is not a timeless classic? (63,199)
by Pau from Mexico
| |
|
|
Hi guys. Well I just came across this video on YouTube: Do teens know 90's music? Uploaded in april 2015 and has 13+ million views. If you are not familiar with this channel, they have 10 teens identifying songs and artists from an specific decade. If you go to 4:45 you'll see when One Sweet Day starts and none of the 10 kids identify the song by the end of it. Only four of them identify Mariah even though they don't know the song or listen to her, but they recognized her voice. I know it is not a representative sample, but it does say something. I'm 26 and before I became a fan I've never heard OSD, which is not the case with other MC's songs. I think it is sad OSD didn't became a timeless classic when I believe it was a sure thing, especially considering it's the longest running number one song and it is so relatable. After such success, I wonder why MC or her team never saw the opportunity to make it an anthem, to be played in special ceremonies, homages, etc. Right now, OSD has the record, yes, but the new generations are totally unaware of its existence.

I disliked the original but I personally adore this version. The emotion, the "live" vocals and piano just seal it for me. Love it.

No excuses here. She probably doesn't care and maybe doesn't want to do it everyone else's way. It's her songs that he demanded she impromptu. She writes and produces her own songs. What is the big deal with being a boss and doing things her way? Simple answer with common sense. She is not obligated to do it their way and anyone with a career, they control. Would be the same way after 27 years. If people want to request me to sing after 27 years, I will do it when I feel like it and I would do it my way. You can dice it up and slice it as much as you want. Mariah Carey is her own boss and she doesn't care. Could it be that simple? Yes. She is a human being. Shocking. Moving on.

Have to agree with some of what you said. She just started Vegas and the media has been the carpool drama and Nick divorce drama. Nothing about the show. Mariah needs to have a vocal moment for the general public in order to be believable again. She needs to get back on James Corden and have a moment. Sorry for all the "moments", like Nick Jonas I've been watching the video and it's become an addiction for me and my friend.

Yup, a showstopper. I watched it several times after it aired in December. Aretha's twitter mentions really blew up with shout outs from Sam Smith, Anita Baker and on and on, with just queen of soul. The mink drop is everything. Aretha should win an Emmy for that performance. Mariah will probably be able to sing well at 7+, sort of like her voice on the "My lovesong". Love that song, but Mimi's voice sounded thin and airy.

Just named the most difficult carpool karaoke person as MC. I wish she would just sing and not make thousands of excuses. So many times on talk shows she's done an impromptu note. I know some of you are going to say how insecure she is knowing that she's judged on every note that comes out of her mouth. If you've been singing for 27 years professionally, you should be able to sing at any time. Oh wait she didn't get enough sleep, the air conditioning was on, she was going through a divorce, she hadn't been on vocal rest, she didn't sleep with the humidifier, one of her background singers was singing her part, she was overcome with emotion at seeing a casket, she hadn't been to the vocal doctor, she had food poisoning, her songs are too difficult to sing, no one retains their voice for 25 years, her earpiece wasn't working. Did I get every last excuse? I do not enjoy being hard on MC but it's like come on. Do you wanna go down as the greatest vocalist of all time? No wait. That's Patti Labelle. Do you wanna go down as The Voice. No wait. that's Whitney Houston. Oh I get it. You are the greatest recording artist in history. The interview can be seen here.

Aretha Franklin - Kennedy Center Honors 2015 (63,187)
by Malcolm from Asia

So I just watch this performance of hers from last year and wow, I'm blown away at how she pulled that off at the age of 73. Her tone doesn't really change at all, her power maybe yes, it's more reserved but it's understandable because of her age but while I'm watching it, it really feels like I'm watching one of the rehearsals of Divas Live 1998. I'm blown away by her voice at this age, it's just wow, like what I have read in the link Pau share with, "not everyone is Aretha". So I wonder, can Mariah pull off a performance at the age of 73? I hope so. Pau's link is a great read. One thing's for sure, years will pass and Mariah Carey will always mention along side with Whitney, Aretha etc. when it's all about the voice, success, "diva" so on, so forth.

He Enwar. I know. She does that to LTT, IDWC, and Someday. She flies through the first five songs. Watching it in person it's like a whirlwind but so worth it. Selena? What songs are you listening to? I was just listening to Captive Heart for that vocal nostalgia showing she had chops even in English. I wish she would have been able to be with us a little longer to see what she would have done musically.

Hi Mi Todo Chop. I love that song. It was the song where I fell in love with her as an artist. My cousin used to play it all the time and had the Mariah Carey tape. She would reply the bridge over and over again, just that part. It's one of her most legendary bridges that really takes the song to another level. Her voice sounds so good. Light years from when I saw her last July. It's so nostalgic to see her sing it and IDWC.

Mariah is really a legendary vocalist. Her enunciation, the clarity of her phrasing, the conscious manipulation of syllables while going through the scales recalls only legendary vocalists like Sarah Vaughan. I'm so happy for the way Mariah has developed her artistry, adding so much intricacy into her vocal delivery. Take a look here.

Why we love big voices (63,182)
by Pau from Mexico
| |
|
|
This is the kind of articles we'll read in next years (2020's and so on). The media will have to compare the new upcoming artists, so they'll need to be objective and compare them to the female legends. MC's name will come up and all the negative stuff will be forgotten, they will praise her voice and even her songwriting skills. We all know Aretha Franklin has her own diva antics, but who cares? She is in her 70's and when you talk about her and somebody in the conversation doesn't know her you just start singing "Respect" and they go "Oh yes, I know her. I love that song." In 10 years somebody will start singing "Without you" or AIWFCIY and they'll say the same thing.

(Laughing), I know right? You are a sweetheart Enwar. I noticed the same thing about Vegas verses being cut. But she's clearly been doing her thing the vocals sound great. I better not talk too much about Selena here, so as not to upset anyone since this site is all about Mariah. But I will say, that I absolutely adore her which is putting it mildly. And I'm not even technically Latina but I swear, my soul has never known that. Lmao. Music has no boundaries.

Wendy (63,180)

I watch her show enough and I can say Wendy puts stories together and makes up facts and opinions and most of the time she has to depend on her staff to make sure she is telling the right story. Do I believe there is real beef between MC and Wendy other than Wendy talking her daily dose of smack? But what I noticed is when it comes to MC the majority is something negative and when it's something positive there is always a backhanded compliment behind it. Maybe Wendy can't deal with MC not kissing her butt.

No I know what you mean. I was hoping she was going to reply to it. It's not that bad or offensive dig. I thought it was hilarious. Mariah even mentioned Wendy in her song. She should be honored that Mariah referenced her show in one of her songs. I really don't get what their beef is (if there is one).

I agree. I think she sounds great. Must be because the whole thing was lip synched right? But I will say one thing that disappointed me about the Vegas show was how some of the #1s, especially older ones, had a chorus and second verse cut out. A la Around The World concert. I always hated that and thought they did that in editing, but apparently not. Unrelated, I've been listening to Selena the past week.

I checked online and Mariah did the Diana Ross tribute in 2000. Google the rehearsal video, very cute. Diana told Mariah not to hit the whistle note at the end of one of the songs. Mariah speaks very fondly of Diana on the video.

It's true, she never really talks about Diana being an influence but I think it's evident in her love for the Motown sound. Plus she covered three of Diana's songs (if we also count Don't Explain), more than any other singer's. I guess that's mention enough.
