Some perspective (44,544)

Here in Florida is one of MC's hot spots for support. When YME was released, not a single station debuted it. It wasn't even an option in the request box. When I called one of the stations and talked to an intern he claimed they didn't have it. One of the light FM stations went so far as to plug her new album, but then played ABMB. I guess they didn't have it either. Forget promo, DJ didn't fully release the track to radio. Back in 2002 it stated MC's contract was for 3 albums, meaning she signed on again after E=MC2. Most likely another 3 albums. Now, just like Virgin did, Def Jam cleaned house - her original team of people were/are being transferred, demoted, and promoted. She doesn't have a team. Add on to that, this album has been pushed back 2 years which would force it to struggle anyway. It's pretty common for a label to simply write off an artist's album as a tax deduction, not promote it, and just accept whatever money it brings in. This was done to LLCoolJ. I'm hoping at this point, DJ's just releasing another song to radio fully this time, so Mariah can jump start her tour. I can't wait to see her, she never disappoints. She can bring the albums with her and people can buy them after hearing it live. Spend $50 on memorabilia, why not buy an album? Although, she hasn't talked about it in awhile, MC mentioned something about her being on tv and I'm not talking NBC's special.

It is what it is, it is either take her or leave her (44,543)

I guess Mariah is not going to kill herself promoting when IDJ is not doing its part either. It is evident she has let go of the singer we all expect her to be. So, it is time to continue on the ride or move on, as simple as that. The Mariah circa 1990-2005 won't come back, ever. Not only because of her voice is not the same, but because of the circumstances and what people are catering today. She is not the "it" of the moment, and her absence from the music scene has contributed what is happening with her career on 2014. It is hard for me because I got used to the successful Mariah, the record breaking, but I'm slowly getting used to what's left. The older Mariah gets, the less likely she'll have another hit, so I expect 2 albums before she turns 50 to wrap it all up. Make my piece with the lip-syncing, bad performances, state of her voice. It is what it is. It's either take her or leave her. At this point, I'm thankful for technology and the studio, even if it has to take her 1000 sessions to put a song together.

I really hope you are right and we get more Mariah music real soon yay. I know, I know she just gave us 14 good tracks, but I am always greedy for more Mariah. I hope the theory about Mariah locking away some of her good music for her new album which she will release after she storms out of Def Jam because that would explain why after 5 years Mariah's deluxe edition contains old songs from a previous album. At first I was happy that the remixes were included because I thought they were re-sung and turned into a completely different song like she did with H.A.T.E.U. but when it was just a copy paste job, I was disappointed. But either ways even if Mariah does plan to release another album, it doesn't mean she should just let this one sink. Why end an era with an under performing album when this could have been her latest big hit? After all people are calling out Mariah's sale figures being low, nobody (the GP/critics/ people writing the articles on the first week sales) are blaming Def Jam. It's always gonna be like "oh the Mariah album bombed".

Mariah Mariah (44,541)
by Badr from USA

I seriously think Mariah has a serious PR problem. She needs, IMHO, to get rid of that extravagant persona that people perceive and appear more down-to-earth. Her look is not youthful anymore. Mariah is not 21 anymore but is not 100 either. It's funny how the image she showcases on the album cover doesn't match the one she presents live. Major branding problem.

The elusive success (44,540)
by Jamie from UK
| |

|
Some people are expecting way too much out of YDKWTD believing the single will save the album or whatever. Umm I wouldn't hold my breath. Let's be real, it's a good song but it's no We Belong Together. And if I'm gonna be totally honest I think there are potential hit singles on the album and none of them start with the letter Y. Anyway, I guess really instead of trying to explain her endless flops, it's time we all accepted she's not a hit machine any more. She had her time, what goes up must come down.

Question / complete my album (44,539)
by Trish from USA
| |
|
|
Does anyone know if you completed your album on iTunes (because you already owned TAOLG, Beautiful and YME) if that counts as an album sale? The way iTunes organizes the album on my phone, it still wants me to purchase those tracks making me wonder if my purchase counted towards album sales.

The elusive state of mind (44,538)

There is absolutely no way Mariah did this album and just expects it to sell with absolutely no promo. I think she is going to wait maybe a week or two and really just blow up, I want more than YME promo. I don't think it's possible for E=MC2 or TEOM promo withJ Jermaine. Maybe for her next label. But she needs "pull down them Tom Fords and act like you see" - as someone else said.

Billboard article about the dress (44,537)
by Carlos Belizário from Brazil

I'm really pissed about the article Billboard posted about Mariah getting dressed in a gown to go to the park with dembabies. It's really sad because they're making her look like crazy. They call it "bizarre" and "it's Mimi just being Mimi". That is so lame considering she's releasing an album. I agree with someone here that said there's people there who doesn't like her.

Mariah and her mystery guest (44,536)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
When TAOLG morphed into MIAMTECT, I bet many songs were replaced with new ones. Kick Rocks, for example, is supposed to be a great track praised by a DJ who had heard at Mariah's home. Mariah knew the possible fate of this album, she is not dumb, so she probably saved some of her best work for the next album so she wouldn't have to spend so much time in the studio recording. We'll most likely have that mystery guest on her next album, and with all the material she has recorded in five years, believe me Mariah won't take too long to release the next album. Celine Dion duetted with Stevie Wonder in 2013. As soon as I knew about it, I was almost quite sure Mariah wouldn't feature Stevie on this album, and I am happy she didn't. R Kelly was on many people's records on 2013, so I'm also happy she didn't use him for this album either (except for out of place BGK part 2). I think we'll be surprised in the near future.

Well I wouldn't mind Mariah on Wendy because Wendy is mostly very supportive of Mariah and I heard that Wendy refused Mottola's offer when he asked her to sabotage Mariah's career back in the day.

Mariah's new theme is "I don't care, I love it" (44,534)
by John from USA
| |
|
|
How do we solve a problem like Mariah? Well, she is surronded by "yes" people. She needs people who will actually challenge her and tell her "no" or "get your ass to work". I mean, why release an album at all if you're not going to work and promote it? If she wants to retire and just be a mommy, that's totally fine [...], or only do so when you're willing to put in the work required to not have it flop. She is no longer a "can do no wrong" artist like Katy or Rihanna. They have 1/10000th of Mariah's talent, but if they farted and recorded it, they would be number 1 hits and sell 3 billion downloads on iTunes. Based on how things have been going for her these last few years, I'm genuinely scared that E=MC2 may have been her last chance for an epic era. But she ruined that by releasing the wrong singles and by falling off the face of Earth after TMB (I remember hearing about a ton of appearances that she cancelled right after E=MC2 had its strong start). She was under 40 and looked amazing that era, that may have been her last chance. But then again, look at Cher and Madonna. Cher had her biggest hit "Believe" at 51, and I think Madonna was around 50 ish when she used Justin Timberlake to get a hit on "4 Minutes". Mariah can definitely have more commercial success, she just has to want it and be in a good place. And right now, I don't think she wants it nor is in the best of places. If she wants it, it's hers.

I agree with you on Medina. He is making Lopez look better than she really is. But her albums and movies still stink. Why would anyone go on Wendell Williams' show anyways? She (or he) would probably smile in her face and trash her behind her back.

The Hit Boy beat is timeless. It's catchy. It's one of MC's best forays into hip hop. Money, this, that, the other don't mean nothing other than Jets on holidays, chefs with hollandaise, expensive lingerie because I come home to you.

Stevie's not singing on MILG (44,531)

It's actually Brian Micheal Cox that's singing the background on MILG. I believe they wanted Stevie to sing on it when they were creating the song which is why he emulated Stevie's sound.

Webmaster if you don't mind posting this up. I just found this cute video of Mariah singing acapella while recording the new album. There are other videos on YouTube titled "Mariah acapella moments" or something along those lines which has compilations of her singing acapella on different occasions and those are fun to watch. You all can YouTube those videos if you already didn't.

PJW / singles (44,527)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

You make a good point about things Mariah says. And yes, it also bugs me that Stevie Wonder is not credited as a featured artist. The man is legendary, if I had Stevie Wonder even cough on my record, I would credit him on it lol. About the singles, I might be sounding negative in some of my posts but honestly YDKWTD is Mariah's last chance at saving her album and clearing up her image. If she doesn't go on promoting it and making it a hit, there is no other hope for her album. If this single under performs again, then nobody (except lambs) will sit around and wait for another single to save the album. This is it. I think 3 under performing singles (although the songs were great) due to lack of promotions should have taught Mariah by now that why she is not selling much copies.

Stevie Wonder (44,526)
by PJW from The U.K.

|
|
I think the mystery guest was Stevie Wonder. They have worked together before as she recorded with him after E=MC2, didn't she? And his appearance on the album is a bit of a mystery as he's not credited on the track list so the general public don't even realise it's him. (It irks me a bit that he's not credited. He still made a contribution. Just because it's on harmonica doesn't mean he's not featured.) But also, I'd take some things Mariah says with a pinch of salt; she often says something and forgets she's already told us or already given the game away. I mean, she said on Cribs that she didn't want to show us Marilyn's piano after we'd already seen it twice two minutes before. She speaks to so many people all the time that she loses track and then it's down to the editors of each article to make something sound bigger than it is or unwittingly contradict her.

This article from Gawker is so spot on and well written. I could not agree more with everything that was said. Single situation (44,524)
by Will from Australia
| |

Personally I'd release YDKWTD now with a fun video with a narrative and probably very little of Mariah in it as her image at the moment is not doing too well with the public IMO. I could see that going top 10 and she should follow it up with Make It Look Good then and If YDKWTD goes top 10 I could see MILG going No.1. Hopefully she gets some Grammy noms and performs Heavenly there and smashes it. Then she releases One More Try in a rerecorded version ft George Michael. It's sad but I actually think YME is probably one of the strongest songs for singles but was released at the wrong time. I'd never release Meterorite as a single as I don't think it's radio friendly at all, clubs yes.

Benny Medina as manager (44,523)
by JJ from Good Times from USA

Man, he is promoting/managing JLo's brand really well. He probably got her that award on Billboard awards by advocating for her. She is on many shows, gave a free concert that was talked about by everyone and is scheduled to be on Wendy Williams. I know it sounds lame, but a lot of people watch Wendy, and I'm sure they buy music. He is making people want to like JLo and making her look relevant. Well, I'm speculating here, I will admit that I wish MC had Benny and kept JD as what he does best, a good friend and producer. And of course I will also give JLo credit for her relatable personality. Also, the album has grown on me. I don't think Thirsty would be a good single. I like You Don't Know and the Stevie song.

Meteorite, YDKWTD, Make It Look Good, Dedicated, Money, and Faded. Meteorite, You Don't Know What To Do, and Make It Look Good are uptempo throwback feel good records. Dedicated, Money, and Faded are tailor made for R&B radio. These should have been the singles along with #Beautiful. I love You're Mine, it's a beautiful ballad with some of her best lyrics in years but ballads haven't been faring to well on radio.

Lol yes another mystery added to the the long list of other mysteries surrounding this album. You are absolutely right about the album. It is great and there were 3 songs that I didn't really like during the first listen but I like and appreciate them now. There is nothing wrong with the album, what's wrong is with the promotion. Only hard core lambs that actually bother checking every Mariah fan page to see what she is up to know about this album. Can we blame the GP for not buying the album? Nope, because how would they even know about it? There is almost zero promotion. Whatever hype #Beautiful created died down and people probably thought Mariah just shelved the album. So basically the low sales numbers can be blamed on the lack of promotions. Makes me sad.
