Personally, I think a few minutes with Mariah and a photo with her is priceless so complaining about it is senseless. You weren't the only person she had to meet and greet. New topic.

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. I can see how none of it would matter while having your pic taken with her but now that it's over and done, you're absolutely right to be dissatisfied. This is supposed to be meet and greet, not photo and bye. I agree with Martyn too. Stella and management might be pulling some of the strings but it ultimately comes down to Mariah. I was pretty much out of money when they announced the tour (why would they announce it in the middle of the Christmas season when everyone has already spent crap loads of money?) so I couldn't do the meet and greet. It's sad to think lambs in different countries got differential treatment based on where they're shooting for the docuseries. The whole team including Mariah should've been prepared for giving each lamb enough time with her. People paid a lot of money for these tickets. Mariah should hold up her end of the deal too.

Your story broke my heart. Do you have the photo? Did you post it? Send it to Mariah's manager and ask for an explanation. That'll put her to the test haha. Come to think of it, there had to be T&C's when you paid for this. What do they stipulate? But don't be down: You met Mariah Carey. Focus on that. How many millions of people have wanted to and you did. Very few ever get that close.

In my opinion, we are expecting too much. Look at it like this, Mariah is equivalent to the queen of England, in a sense, or even, let's say, the Pope. She is willing to mingle with the "peasants" for a hefty fee, but only for a few short moments, then she must move on. She will never be one of us ever again. She is high above us now, she has been for a long time, and we just need to accept that. She was a "regular" or "normal" person at one time in her life, but she has been away from that for so long, that she is can no longer relate to us, or even cares to. It is what it is. To be honest, I don't believe that she "loves" her fans, in the true meaning of the word. She loves the money, and success, that her fans have given to her, plain and simple. As a fan you have to be willing to wait for hours for her to arrive, and pay hefty fees to be able to meet your idol. Is it really worth it? That's for you to decided. Mariah is not the same person she was long ago. It's obvious to me, not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just plain and simple truth. Now, please don't shoot the messenger.

A large part of me thinks this is the same issue as the social media debacle but not the fact that the manager's daughter is posting messages but that Mariah isn't doing it herself. I remember in the late nineties waiting a lifetime for dial-up to connect so I could listen to Mariah's voicemails. But now she can't write her own messages for social media. It's not exactly "connecting" with the fans. How long does it take? Well, I guess about as long as it takes to take a photograph and bugger off haha. Then, there's the constant lateness. She's in danger of looking a little aloof. That being said: outside her hotel late one night during Charmbracelet promotion she arrived back in the car asleep, her people too scared to wake her up, we were told she was tired and would go straight in. She woke up and made someone re-apply her make-up because, we were then told, she was definitely going to come say hi to us as we (all ten of us hung on) waited out so late. And she did.

Meet and greet mess (61,099)
by Martyn from England, UK

I'm so sorry to hear about your meet and greet experience Tiina. It's ridiculous that fans couldn't give her gifts directly or have autographs signed. Schedule or no schedule, what's an extra few minutes per fan? These are the same fans that often wait a very long time for her to arrive on stage, so I'm sure if she's a little late back to the hotel it won't harm anybody. Also, I really don't like the idea of them staging a better version of a meet and greet for the documentary, that's just gross and deceitful. I gather that it's Mariah's team who will be responsible for most of this, but the blame can't be taken fully off Mariah. Given how much people have paid I think on this occasion she could have treated her fans a little better.

Meet and greet mess (61,098)
by Tiina from Finland

I'm basically in debt now because of not only buying the meet and greet package but because I got a brand new dress that was shipped from America and I went to get my hair and makeup done for the picture, not to mention I had to pay for transportation and I also bought tour memorabilia. I spent well over 1000 euros for this thing and I'm not rich. Not that it was required for me to get a new dress or my hair and makeup done but surely it goes without saying that for a fan that moment we get to spend with Mariah means everything to us and most of us have been preparing for it. Like I said, the more I think about how they basically just ripped us off and put in the absolute minimum effort, the worse I feel. All that talk about wanting to connect with the fans during this tour and all these years of hearing Mariah say how important we are to her and what a special relationship we have with her, well, in my experience there was none of that. She was sweet, yes, but there was no connection there. It's also unfair that only one fan gets the royal treatment when we've all paid to get the ultimate experience.

About the meet and greet (61,095)
by Anthony Basco from Cardiff, Wales
| |
|
|
I understand what you're saying Andrew, and of course when I bought the meet and greet ticket back in December I thought that I would get to, you know, meet her haha. I had so much in my head that I wanted to say, I wondered maybe there might even be a glass of Cristal each (yes, I know) and so many imagined scenarios, so it was a shock to be waiting in a line to have a picture taken and then leave again. That being said, Mariah is one of the last of the musical greats, of an era the likes of which will never be seen again. To think that everytime now I see a pic of her with Elton John, Aretha or any celebrity I can say "I have a pic with her, too" does make me feel kind of warm inside. All I can say is, for me personally, it wasn't a waste of money.

I agree it's def a feel good record, and maybe her most. I love the energy in that song and it's one of those that translates extremely well live. It's also in my top 3 of her #1s. I do remember she had stopped singing it as you mentioned, and boy was it exhilarating seeing and hearing it live again during Angels Advocate. The whole theater went bananas and you could barely hear her just because of how loud and excited the crowd got.

The meet-and-greet moneymaker (61,093)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
Well, it sounds like Tiina had a shocker of a time. If it is the case that they set up a different scenario for the documentary then it actually shows Mariah knows her actual meet-and-greets are a rip-off. You pay that amount, I guess you expect it to be acknowledged, to be looked after and to come away happy. But Anthony looks so happy and it's an awesome photo. I've been around Mariah at signings/outside the Dorchester. I'm a bit ambivalent about paying her hundreds of pounds for a photo with her. I paid her bucket loads of money for her music, concert tickets and merchandise. Aren't you just really saying: "Here's a photo I paid Mariah Carey hundreds of pounds to take with me"? I mean no disrespect to those who've done it. My point is: Does she really need the money? Why not make it a competition to win meet-and-greets? The whole thing seems a bit, um, disturbing (for want of a better word).

TJ (61,092)
by Anthony Basco from Cardiff, Wales

Hi TJ. I'm very short, 5'6 or 168cm. I think MC is 5'9 but she always has on those gigantic skyscraper heels haha. She really is breath-taking in the flesh, the moment was so surreal, and yes it was very brief. Everything that Tina said about waiting etc was true for my experience also, however personally I'm over the moon because although it was the briefest of moments, it is an item that I can check off my bucket list. And the fact that it was so quick makes it seem a bit like a dream, which my whimsical personality seems to enjoy. But I'll always have the picture evidence, and and I was so happy the picture turned out as it did. It was kind of a "one shot and you're out" deal. Make that shot count haha.

I'm happy she's still singing Emotions, even though she's been consistently lowering the key since 91. After the Rainbow tour she practically dropped it from her repertoire before she picked it up again during the Angels Advocate tour. That's nearly 10 years. It's one of her most feel-good songs, especially live. I'd never noticed the similarity between You're So Cold and Rumour Has It. You're absolutely right. If Adele were ever to cover a Mariah song, I think it should be Vision Of Love (minus Mariah's untouchable melisma and whistle, of course). I'm not a big fan of Adele's voice, but I think her raw vocals would go really well with Vision Of Love.

Mine again (61,090)
by Giovanni from USA

Still remains one of my all time favorite Mariah songs. The music, lyrics, she completely sang her face off in this song. And that whistle at the end is pure bliss. And this is why Beyonce or any other female singer can ever touch Mariah. Her tone, vocal power, chest voice, melismas and whistle notes is all something no other can ever match. I really hope she delivers this amazing vocally on her next album.

Emotions (61,088)
by Giovanni from USA
| |
|

No matter how hard Mariah tries, "Emotions" is the one song she could never sing as flawless after '92. She kills the intro, but that's it. I'd rather hear her sing "Can't let go", "So blessed" or "You're so cold". I sometimes wonder if Adele was influenced by "You're so cold" for "Rumor has it". The similarity in the piano is so obvious. I hope one day Adele will cover one of Mariah's songs. She would do good with "You're so cold".

Re: Mariah was fabulous in Helsinki / Andrew (61,085)
by Tiina from Finland

The more I think about what went down at the meet and greet, the more sour I feel about the experience. On the other hand, I was honoured to meet my idol and I feel thankful to have been able to do it with some major financial help from my family but I also feel cheated. I knew that we wouldn't have much time with Mariah but to only get to spend such a brief moment with her was very disappointing to say the least. To think that I paid 700 euros for only 7-10 seconds with Mariah and then on top of that I got the worst photo out of the bunch. I don't blame the photographer or Live Nation or the people in charge of the security, or Mariah. I blame Mariah's team. You're absolutely right, Andrew. They should work the meet and greets in on the tour schedule when people pay to be there. I've heard from fans from other countries who have had a similar experience to mine and said that the whole thing was nothing but a rushed through mess. First, we waited for at least 15-20 minutes while Mariah was being prepared in another room. We could hear her. At one point they asked to borrow a lighter to apparently light candles, so we thought it was going to be amazing. We also thought that maybe Mariah would come and greet us in the room we were in and then take the pictures. One of her backup singers came in to greet us and took photos with fans, which I thought was very generous of her. By the way, I felt bad that some fans had bought gifts to Mariah and they were not allowed to give them directly to her. Instead, they gave them to the security guy. We were also told that Mariah would not be signing any autographs. Anyway, after all that waiting we were all of a sudden in a big rush to go and take our pictures. They yelled us to get in line. The pictures were taken in a corner of a gloomy room. There were no candles, it was all very unglamorous. There was even overhead lighting. To use Mariah's terminology, the room was bleak. But that's fine, I don't need athmosphere. I just assumed there would be candles and what not but it must have been for another set up for the documentary she's filming, which I will get back to. But the least they could have done is give everyone 30 seconds with Mariah. A minute, well, I guess that would have been really pushing it. The way it was organized was very haphazard. There were too many people there and everyone was on the edge about the tight schedule. My question is: why sell meet and greet packages to fans when clearly there's no time for them to host these things? It's really unfair to the fans. I felt like Mariah's team could have cared less about making sure that we had a great experience that night or that the photos would turn out great. Anyway, the guy who happened to be last in line to get his picture got to appear in the documentary. I talked with him briefly afterwards and he was very excited, just screaming how he had spent extra time with Mariah and it was fabulous etc. I guess they filmed him in that other set up to make it seem like that's what it's like at your typical meet and greet and that that's how all the fans are being treated. If you ask me, it's pretty lame that they would stage it like that when it's so not like that at all. I'm glad I met her but I wouldn't recommend spending that much on the meet and greet tickets. Try spotting her outside a hotel or something because that's as brief as it's going to be anyway. You actually might have a better chance to really talk to her that way.
