Article: Exclusive first look inside Mariah Carey's Christmas movie (57,392) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
Oh Santa is getting new lyrics? Only Mariah would think to write new verses for a song that's already deliciously lyrics-heavy. I'm so excited for this project because I love when she grows and graduates like she's done with taking on directing a whole film. Who knew when she directed Fantasy in '95 that she'd be so good at it? She's a natural storyteller, some of her songs read as novel synopses and scripts. I might even do a list of them just because. I almost can't believe Mariah and Lacey Chabert had never met before this movie. Like, what kind of Elusive Chanteuse are you MC? Even Oscar winning actresses can't act cool around you, never mind introduce themselves. And Drew Lachey from 98° is involved too? So much great synergy this whole year surrounding her and counting. Team Mariah is 120% on point. Keep it up you all.

Diva's Live 1998 (57,391) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
To this day I love those performances. It wasn't until I came online, that I became aware some people felt upset about the concert.

The media and sexism (57,390) by Jono from USA
I knew that as soon as the "inside exclusive" story came out of Mariah directing, that the usual hating media outlets would run with the story and only emphasize certain aspects. Sure enough, Showbiz 411 decided to highlight that Mariah "made a group of children and their parents wait seven hours to shoot a few minutes". Obviously we see where this is going - a continuous slandering of Mariah as some self-absorbed diva with no regards to anyone else. What this story conveniently left out is that the people waiting were extras. I've worked as an extra multiple times before on a TV show, and it is absolutely normal, in fact standard industry practice, to be waiting. You are an extra. Meaning, it's a nice word for "moving/breathing furniture". You are basically there to fill the scene so it looks natural. You are at the bottom in terms of priority. So yes, you will be made to wait until you are needed, and kept around until you are no longer needed. That is because there are a million other things the production has to worry about that is more important than a non speaking background role. Calling you out, slanderous media. Interesting too, considering the report that came out last month about how Mariah on the Game of War set was actually really professional and easy to work with, while the male execs were actually the divas. But I guess since they're men, they can't be seen as "demanding" or "bossy" and having "diva behaviors", right? In fact, look up any female entertainer and there is bound to be some story about how "difficult" they are to work with. As for men, you would have to search hard to find even a fourth of those stories. I see you, problematic media.

Got my tickets (57,389) by Edward from USA
I just got an early Christmas present, tickets to go see Mariah on December 9th. I thought I would share with you guys. If she sang "Miss You Most At Christmas Time" that night, I would die happy.

No MAS: Re: VH1 Divas Live 1998 (57,384) (57,387) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
"What's the point of attacking Mariah and a 17 year old performance? Can you not make a criticism without sarcasm, bitterness, and bitchy remarks?" Bino, I guess you're not on the We Can't Let MiMi Shine mailing list so you weren't CCed today's memo: Hate on Mariah using the VH1 Divas Live 1998 show as a segue. The subject matter changes but the rhetoric is paint by numbers. Oldest trick in the book. Notice how everybody but Mariah gets praised. And because M loves Aretha she is also attacked passive-aggressively via Patti (who has nothing at all to do with the 1998 Divas line up) a.k.a. Mariah's fairy godmother. It's desperation at its most rank. To jump through all those hoops all in the name of: Mariah ain't shit? SMDH. And for the record, Mariah has fabulous diva etiquette. Not everybody on that particular Beacon Theatre stage can say that. But it was also 17 years ago so I'm sure valuable lessons in diva decorum have between doled out to the ones who needed it since. And for the record? Mariah more than held her own that night. She was a spitfire and her spirit was on fire when it was supposed to be. She's not a showy singer, never has been or will ever be because she has innate soul. When you're as vocally skilled, melodically talented, lyrically driven, emotively soulful and instinctually respectful of the ones on whose shoulders you stand, as Mariah has always been, it's no wonder you are the chosen one who gets to duet with the queen of soul and covered by her in concert decades later. Basically, Patricia raised her right.

Re: Mariah is bad influence (57,386) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
All of these are still better than my niece twerking to Anaconda. She's 3 years old by the way and was obsessed with the song. I'd say even though Mariah has some risque lyrics, even her raciest lyric is more tame compared to what we hear on the radio everyday nowadays. Haha. Kids nowadays are exposed to such vulgarity, it scares me really.

Re: Is it the right time? (57,379) (57,385) by Giovanni from USA
Not true at all. I know this a Mariah board but Aretha has always been threatened by Patti. And Patti slayed her with "Ain't no way". It was that night Aretha knew she'd been slayed. Her expression said it all lol. But there's no denying Patti's voice is much better, stronger and more powerful. And that range of hers is untouchable. Mariah and Patti are the best female singers of all time.

I always run to Mariah's rescue when her voice is concerned but I have to agree. Her voice was very strained between the Butterfly and Rainbow eras. Not just her chest either. She hardly did any whistles in any of her live performances during that time (that being said, Make It Happen at VH1 is my favourite version of the song ever). My theory is the way she sang throughout the Daydream tour. She pushed her chest voice too hard. I was embarrassed for her too while watching VH1. The two finale numbers had her literally shouting to have her voice heard. Hopefully one day we will get to hear what really happened to her voice post Daydream.

VH1 Divas Live 1998 (57,382) by Randy from USA
I was mortified when Celine went up against Aretha. I was like where is MC? People always say, well MC doesn't have a gospel background and she's a studio musician so she can't "show off" live. I called pox on all of that because listen to the "Jesus" chorus at then end of Jesus What A Wonderful Child on the Christmas album. That was MC going off and I loved it. All she had to do was replicate that and the audience would have been wow'ed. But only 4 years later, when Aretha called MC out and said help me lift him, MC vocals were strained. Celine stood up next to the queen of soul and matched her note for note. I was mortified as a MC fan. But I forgot, MC didn't get enough rest the night before, her earpiece monitor wasn't working, there wasn't enough humidity in the venue, she was sick, she was a last minute addition to the show, she was nervous, she was upset, you know the usual excuses for someone that is considered one of the greatest vocalists of all time. I will excuse MC for not singing well in 2015 but not in 1998. Which again begs the question that no one has answered, what happened between that Tokyo Dome Daydream performance (her best) in 96 and that Oprah 1997 performance that caused her voice to change dramatically forever? And don't attack me folks, do your research.

Re: Mariah is bad influence (57,374) (57,381) by May from Denmark
Tell me about it. Once I was doing shuffle through Mariah's videos with my little girl who is 4 years old, she loves Mariah (also Selena Gomez and Britney Spears so oh oh poor me haha) but in the shuffling it appeared "Touch my body", generally I avoid it but we watched the video because it is fun all in all, I don't mind that Mariah is in underwear, I like to think she is being comfortable at her home haha (here in Denmark we don't find bare nipples to be scandalous, they are never censored, so you can imagine a girl in underwear is no big deal, we take it as a natural thing). My daughter loved the costumes, the games Mariah played with the guy, for her it was all innocent tag games, loved the unicorn and her dolly dress, all was fine. Until much later in the day I heard my girl singing "touch me body, lalala give me what I deserve" and I thought "No (a very long lasting no) what have I done?" It took some while before she shook off the tune from her head, sometimes she would even ask me to play it again but I couldn't. At home it's ok, I know my girl doesn't mean what she sings but outside you never know, surely isn't as bad as what I've heard some other little kids sing before.

Re: May, Mariah was sure almost home (57,375) (57,380) by May from Denmark
Yes, I also felt there was a 90s vibe somewhere along the song, I found her tears in the video while belting some notes very emotional and probably the only thing I liked about that clip. Lee, the second verse is exactly the one you are referring to, I disagree with you in that it's repetitive, I think it's a really good word play. I like that the verse is the intense part of the song. Sometimes I interpret this song as somewhere along the way losing sight of one true self, forgetting your roots but then remembering and trying to find yourself back. Perhaps that's why I like it, beyond Mariah's great singing, the only odd thing I find is her voice in the beginning verse, she sounds very girlie girl, I don't know if they modified the tune, somehow I don't think the original was in that key.

Re: Is it the right time? (57,377) (57,379) by May from Denmark
I watched the video you linked with MCs commentary and then had to go back to the Divas 1998 to check the ending to see what was the deal. I also don't think at all that Celine was trying to outdo Aretha in any way. Aretha invited Mariah to sing Jesus with her which she did, Mariah toned it down and went back, Aretha kept on singing "lift it higher" so she look at all the singers and said "come on, lift it", "will you help me lift it?", "help me lift it" insisting to the other singers and the only one who stood up was Celine and they both started to have fun powering some notes. Aretha said while Celine kept throwing notes "I'm loving it", so I don't see why Celine wouldn't keep on, she is a singer and she was enjoying singing, that's all I got. I have a lot of respect for Celine, she is very professional, from punctuality to doing her own make up. Maybe Mariah felt it was a lack of respect from her point of view, but if Aretha is asking for it and then dances and enjoys when another singer throws tunes clearly she didn't feel offended by it, perhaps Aretha is in another league due to the very long career span and experience and doesn't feel threatened by others, she seems to always be on a comfort zone where nothing touches her.

Oh dear (57,378) by Lee TS from USA
Lol I still want Mariah to play Ursula, I actually watched it last night for the nostalgia haha. The way Ursula "dramatics" just reminded me so much of Mariah when she plays up her diva antics. There's a line that Ursula says she was barely eating and wasting away or another line when she bids farewell to the prince calling him loverboy. I could be making this up but it's very Mariah complaining, "Why, why? I'm famished. Would it be incredibly tiresome for some ice, etc." Ariel can be played by an up in comer who's vocally gifted, and Hugh Jackman for King Triton. So yeah, this is just me but I'm like so not agreeing with everyone. I've never liked Almost Home and felt it was really messy, from the lyrics to the music to the vocals - just not a fan. I can't remember but I think it was the second verse when she kept repeating the same word, it felt like they ran out of time to finish the lyric or something. Yes M looked very pretty in DFAU but her sexiness was so off putting to me. She was trying too hard and it didn't come off as natural. The whole video was a pose fest even when she was making those "singing faces". I had no idea Honey was so sexual. I remember going on an anti-Mariah site back then not knowing what "anti" meant, and they were faking lyrics to hate on her. I remember they left Honey as is because it was deemed bad. And I remember wondering what was so bad about the song because in my mind I thought she was just singing about another fantasy dreamlover. But now she can't wait until the honey washes over her, makes you think if Eminem really lol nevermind. Last thing, I need Mariah to do a photo op with Aaron Kwok when she performs in China. He's aged so well and still ridiculously handsome along with the other 3 Kings of Heaven. I hope she does do the slowly-but-surely's since it's hyped to be some big glamorous party, and maybe wear gold. Lots of gold. And maybe some jade. In a red dress.

Re: Is it the right time? (57,372) (57,377) by Musti from UK
Amen to that. I've always wanted this happen. It is the only other duet that must happen. But again, I don't think it will. For the longest time I wondered why, especially since they seem to be friends. And then I came across this video some time ago. It seems Mariah was very put of by Celine at VH1 Divas Live in 1998. It's a shame because I don't think Celine was deliberately trying to overshadow anyone. She was always very keen to be liked in the English-speaking world and perhaps that night was her trying to fit in with the other divas. Obviously it wasn't taken very well. I hope with all my heart that this duet happens. Please forgive her Mariah.

Re: Is it the right time? (57,372) (57,376) by Giovanni from USA
I find Celine completely irrelevant. I mean she hasn't been popular since '97 with her one and only successful album "Let's talk about love". Mariah need to collaborate with someone who is curent or at least more successful. I just think Celine is so boring. *no shade*

May, Mariah was sure almost home (57,375) by Edward from USA
May, I completely agree with you. Almost Home restored my faith in Mariah putting together a great pop song. Her vocals, the music, the arrangement were all great. So sad the song got lost in the noise of "bad movie reviews" and her feud with Nicki Minaj. When I first heard the song, I was so happy. Finally a song that reminded her 90's days. I like R&B, but I think she should different genres even if it is a song or two. At the end of the day, variety is what has kept her career alive.

Mariah is bad influence (57,374) by Edward from USA
I went to visit my sister a couple of days ago, and I heard my little niece singing to her Kent doll: "Honey, you can have me when you want me." Am I being over-dramatic or is Mariah a bad influence? My niece is 5, I hope she makes it to at least 15 before she utters those words again. She sounded pretty serious though. I told my sister not to worry, that she needed to worry if she ever heard her sing "Everytime I close my eyes, I envision you, caressing me."

Re: DFAU (57,371) (57,373) by Giovanni from USA
You're so right. "Don't forget about us" is one of my favorite videos. Mariah looks stunning and it tells a little story lol. I was proud of her when the song hit number one. Her videos were so amazing that era. She needs better video and music producers than what she has been giving us. We need a video with a story. Something like Patti and Donald with "On my own".

Is it the right time? (57,372) by Edward from USA
A magic and "out of this world" collaboration needs to happen, just like that commercial about people waiting for settlement money, but they can't wait and they "want it now", I, just like them, want this now, lol. I really think it is the right time for a magic collaboration to happen. A "once in a lifetime" collaboration which would bring the main focus on, not only Mariah, but also on that other special artist who would collaborate with her. Any collaboration with a male singer wouldn't bring much attention to Mariah now, she's been collaborating with male singer, rappers for the longest. I'm talking about one of the last of the two remaining true divas, Mariah being the first one of course. I'm talking about Celine Dion. Mariah and Celine need to sing a very well written song where they could showcase their voices. As much as I love "When You Believe", some people were expecting more vocally, especially from Mariah. Their careers shouldn't go into the dark without this collaboration, while people still care of course. Mariah needs to get as much of her "Honey" weaves on, and her honey tea of course, and Celine should clean her nasal passages, put Rene to sleep, and go for it. It think it would be epic.

DFAU (57,371) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Can we just take a moment and fangirl over how gorgeous MC looked in the music video? I think she looked more beautiful in DFAU video than WBT, which is saying a lot since WBT is one of my top favourite videos. But in every scene of DFAU Mariah looked amazing. The shots of her laying with her hair fanned out is sexy yet innocent, the Marilyn homage scene hair is so effortlessly sexy. She looks adorable in the scene of her sitting on the dude's lap in the car. What I love most about the video is that it's sexy and sweet without looking like she is trying too hard and also that along with the beautiful shots there is a subtle storyline so it's not just glamour shots.

She may have to do any duet live, however. And the bigger the artist, the less forgiving they would be for lip-syncing. Miguel would go with it. Anyone bigger would not.

I was listening to Angie Lee's "Plastic doll song" and the beginning of the song is similar to Loverboy. Mariah's knowledge in music is so deep, how cute. Now she needs to do a record with Drake to go up again sad but true, anyway it could be hot dont you think? She has the money to pay anyone, I wish this happens because I don't think she is releasing the so called big record MC has and Jermaine said once if she released it would be huge on the radio.

Re: Soundtrack (57,348) (57,368) by May from Denmark
You know Mimi, talking about big budget movies I still wonder why it was Demi Lovato who sang "Let it go" rather than Mariah. I don't have anything against Lovato, she seems to be a darling girl but her voice sounded weak and limited in that song, Mariah voice is perfect for such music, she would have blown that song away. Eyelashes would have fallen and tears would have been dried with Mariah's powerful vocals. I still ask why, why, why haha.
