Myles re: Butterfly (46,978)

I always felt so. There were switching perspectives during that song that as a teenager had me a bit confused, but yes, sheer brilliance.

As for "Butterfly", Mariah once said in an interview (I think it was Interview magazine from fall 2007) that she wrote this song as though she wanted to hear those words from Tommy. She said something to the extend that she wished he would have said, "Hey, you've been with me since you were a kid. Go be yourself for a while." It would have made a world of difference in her relationship with him and she would probably still have been married to him (at that point). So yes, "Butterfly" is from someone else's point of view, and not Mariah's.

I completely agree with you. Cry. is a song that people will love because it's classic Mariah. While I doubt it would do too well on the radio due to radio's bias towards Mariah and women over 40, this song would sell the album. If Mariah performed this on The View, Live With Kelly and Michael, the Queen Latifah show, as in shows that reach the adult contemporary audience, the album could experience a sales boost. But also, imagine seeing Mariah performing Cry. at SNL, or Jimmy Fallon, or Ellen. Everyone would be in awe because it's Mariah back to being Mariah. The vocal is so raw and so real, while that chorus "till we both breakdown and cry" is so memorable. It would stick and resonate. If she ever gets the chance to perform at the Grammys, I pray she sings this song. It's perfect. Also, Mariah has said before that "the labels always choose the worst selling singles" while saying that Migrate should have been a single and IWTKWLI should not have followed Obsessed.

Happy Friday everyone. Has anyone else thought Mariah wrote the song "Butterfly" from Tommy's point of view? I always thought that was why the song was truly brilliant. I most certainly could be wrong but I think it is truly genius.

The Art of Letting Go (46,974)
by Dove from USA

I love TAOLG because she captures the feeling of anger and despair. When you're at the end of your rope after a relationship ends. You're grieving but still trying to move on and live your life. Meanwhile your ex keeps trying to trip you. The same person who knew you the most intimately, is now acting like your worst enemy. The person who said they loved you. They act like you owe them because you used to be in a relationship with them. I love when she sings, "Baby letting go, it ain't easy. Oh cause somebody you used to know, is flinging your world around - and you know what? They watch, as you're falling, falling doooown." And at the end, the exhale she gives before she says the final line, "It ain't easy baby." Like she's just exhausted with the whole situation. At the beginning, the way she's fitting all the syllables of the big words into one line reminds me of when you're super upset and you kinda stutter when you talk. You have so much to say but your emotions are high so it fumbles out awkward. I love the music and lyrics too. Aint the way she sings certain words. It's a masterpiece of a song.

I actually enjoyed the list. It's fun to participate and know what songs other lambs hold the nearest and dearest to their hearts. Besides I've ran across much more annoyingly redundant topics here, that are more deserving of an outcry. List are the easiest topics to stroll pass / ignore / not comment on if it's not your bag. No shade. I love you all.

Single choices (46,970)
by Kyle from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah said herself that "Cry" is her favorite single but she knows it's not a radio hit. I disagree. I think "Cry" is excatly what she needs to put out. Every once in a while, a slow heart wrenching ballad works. Who ever is the final decision maker of her single choices the last few albums needs to be terminated immediately. "#Beautiful" was the right lead single for this album, but it should have been followed up with "Thirsty". "Cry" should have been third and then a wind down single of "You Don't Know What To Do". Same thing with MOAIA. You don't drop "Obsessed" and then follow up with "I Want To Know What Love Is". That is a great vocal but definitely should not have been the second single choice. I wonder if Mariah has any say in singles or if it is a constant battle with music industry executives that still think they know what's "hot" for radio?

Thanks for the compliments. My excuse for not posting a ton? Kids, lol. Anyway, that video you posted is my favorite version of The Roof. It's often on my playlist over the original. And the video? One of her best. I've often been quite critical of MC in recent years in regards to her videos. The video for The Roof tells a story. It's not simply MC running around in a bathing suit or nothing at all, ala You're Mine. That concept is old. Her videos during the Butterfly era were and still are some of her best.

Mariah appreciation (46,966)
by Jono from USA
| |
|
|
I just want to take a moment to appreciate Mariah and what she has given us the past 25 years. It's always been about the music, the writing, and the voice. No gimmicks. Even at this age when she should all but be pushed aside to Adult Contemporary, she still manages to make it fresh. Unlike another certain ahem "artist" (or a couple), that resort to cheap tricks like, well, showing off their assets.

Missing members / The Roof video rare remix (46,965)

Stacey, Clueey, and Randy, where have you all been? I miss your posts. When I first started reading this board your posts were the ones I gravitated towards, along with Stephen-UK and both Nikki's. Someone was saying they didn't like The Roof video, I was in complete shock. It's her best if not one of her best videos. All the videos from that album were good. I like that she wasn't starring into the camera trying to be sexy for 3 minutes. Riding in the limo while reliving that night on the roof, the primping in the mirror, the great styling and those Sergio jeans (I miss that). The need to stand through the roof of the car to get wet to help her relive that rainy night on the roof top. I love when she plays out her legendary lyrics in a video. Speaking of the song, have anyone heard the remix that removes the classic piano loop and replaces it with music as intoxicating as the original? If anyone has a second, please listen and let me know what you think? [Webmaster: The Full Crew Radio Edit with No Rap is not rare at all, it's on almost every single release.]

Listing lazily to the left (46,964)
by Andrew from UK

List people list. Rage against the machine. 1. "I would shower you with love and drown within your soul." 2. "Still I feel like a child as I look at the moon, maybe I grew up a little too soon." 3. "And I, truly inspired, finding my soul there in your eyes." 4. "And after all these years of enmity, envy and years, it's a shame you don't know me at all." 5. "Thunder precedes the sunlight, so I'll be alright." UK bonus track. "No no no no no no, don't worry, don't you ever fear, I'm by your side, don't worry, don't ever be lonely, it's alright." Shakespeare in song. The title of the list is your to make. Doesn't have to be boring. Right? artyn, you are awesome as you are passionate. And the rest of you, list. List against the machine. "I don't care if I keep saying it over and over." I may hate a lot of your comments. Love is.

Another list but with original twist MC v. Whitney (46,962)
by TiffMelody from USA
| |
|
|
These 2 ladies are known for their iconic voices and their "divafied" ballads, despite having a diverse catalog, their career are more similar than you think. 1. Both have happy-in-love song with word emotion in title. Whitney - So Emotional. MC - Emotions. 2. Both have inspirational believe in yourself ballads. Whitney - Greatest Love of All. MC - Hero. 3. Both have children featuring on their record. Whitney - My Love Is Your Love. MC - Supernatural. 4. Both made iconic holiday theme albums. Whitney's is known as best selling gospel album but is based on holiday movie, and MC's is just simply the go-to best selling Christmas album. Whitney - The Preacher's Wife. MC - Merry Christmas. 5. Both made a duet with a film reference in its title (lol). Whitney - Same Script, Different Cast with Deborah Cox. MC - It's a Wrap with Mary J. Blige. Last one drum roll please. 6. Both took a a relatively unheard of country song and covered it so that nobody can cover it again. Whitney - I Will Always Love You. MC - Without You.

Mariah's best gospel songs (46,961)
by Quaid Long from USA
| |
|
|
Anyone fancy another list? Lol. Anyway, I was thinking last night about how great it would be (somewhere down the road in her career) if Mariah released a full-on gospel album, sort of like Whitney's "The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack, which endures as one of my faves to this day. Mimi's Gospel (working title, haha) could include some of her past gospel tracks, plus some brand new ones (which could include standards, covers, and brand new songs written by her). My favorite Mariah gospel songs thus far (in order): 1. Fly Like a Bird 2. When You Believe 3. Heavenly (NWT/CGUN) 4. I Am Free 5. O Holy Night / O Come All Ye Faithful 5. Jesus (Oh What a Wonderful Child) 6. I Wish You Well

Thoughts (46,960)
by clueey23 from USA

It's been a minute since I've posted. I just wanted to say I'm still enjoying the album. Actually now more than before simply because now I understand what she may have been going through. Wendy Williams is a hater. It's like she is still being paid to talk bad about MC like its 2001. I think she's bitter because MC gives her like zero attention. I honestly think MC and Nick will get back together. Unless Nick has actually cheated on MC on top of all of the stuff he was saying about past personal relationships. I don't think people actually realize what a sensitive spirit MC is. She is strong yes but us, as fans, know more than anyone that MC is just a strong yet fragile creature. I can't wait to see footage from the upcoming shows and also hear new material. It's sad that people don't see MC is a down to earth individual just simply living her dream that can be nightmarish at times. Anywho, she always pulls through. It actually wasn't until Glitter and her showing that she is in fact a real person and not a robot, that I became a huge fan. And I also don't think she is that "diva" part that she plays up. It's all in fun and not serious. I think once folks realize that what they see is a perception of reality and not the actual reality, it will be too late for everyone. Because if "they" own the media they can bend it all they want.

Lists (46,959)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
I think this is by far the funniest uproar that has ever been on this messageboard. I usually don't care about lists. My only issue was that these aren't our usual "top 5" lists that are tolerable "in bulk" so to speak, and so many people were making lists at one point that they were outweighing discussions. Even if you did scroll away, you were just bound to run into another one. For me personally, I wasn't legitimately pissed or trying to silence anyone. It was just a funny observation that every time I turned around someone was making a list. Bill, I'd rather see people write "top 100 MC songs" before another Ariana discussion.

Through The Rain (46,958)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Although it was a minor hit in most major music markets, this ballad was a hit in Asia, particularly the eastern part. It was a huge hit in our country, and has singlehandedly pushed the album towards achieving platinum status. Its inspirational nature and message seemed a logical way to go after the Glitter debacle, and was one of the reasons why it's just as popular as Hero here. In fact, it has spawned a several covers from local artists, and is also a staple in karaoke bars and amateur singing contests. Yes, her voice during the verses is thin and airy, but to me, that adds to its appeal, and her performance that climax just makes you forget about that and just brings it home. My favorite thing about it is the way it perfectly exemplified the humility, honesty, ease, and grace that characterized the whole Charmbracelet era. Sadly, this track is often overlooked, but not now, at least for every lamb it has uplifted and given hope. Happy 12th anniversary, Through The Rain.

The Roof (46,956)

I always took The Roof to mean the night she met Derek Jeter. It was in November 1996 at the Fresh Air Fund's Fall Frolic Auction that I believe the two met for the first time. Obviously, she was still married to Tommy at the time, so she might have embellished on the lyrics such as "and I surrendered as you took me in your arms".

The Art Of Letting Go / hilarious list drama (46,955)
by Martyn from England, UK
| |
|

I absolutely adore this song. When I first heard it, I was disappointed because I didn't (and still don't) think it's a "single", it's more of a standout/"blow you away" album track. I actually wish I'd have heard it for the first time in the context of the album instead of a single. Additionally, I love it as the closing track on the album, I just wish it wasn't a bonus track and didn't come after the (bizarrely added) Memoirs throwaways. Andrew from the UK, you have summed up everything I feel about this hilarious list drama. If people really "didn't care" about the lists, they wouldn't be leaving shady little comments. Let's just live and let live, and leave the subtle shade throwing to MC, shall we?

About the lists and JLo (46,953)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
I've been on this board for years and I've noticed that the lists start to appear whenever there's little going on with MC. Right now she's about to tour, everywhere but her home country, which is understandable because we're fickle and nitpickers, so there's no new album, single or television appearance. And let me put this out there. She completely dropped this album. It sold more than JLo's initially and yet JLo is still releasing singles and making appearances. MC has just disappeared. When MC has a new project, and I'm not talking about a perfume or beverage (shade), coming out, then the lists will disappear as they always do. And finally, I looked at the favorite songs list and not one fan mentioned what is my favorite song of all time, Right To Dream. A little sad.

To list or not to list... (46,951)
by MimiLamb from Germany
| |
|
|
I must say I'm not a big fan of these lists, but I just scroll by them because for others it's something great and they like to share it, that is what this messageboard is all about. We all have freedom of speech, it doesn't matter if you are from the US or Europe the same rules apply. It's not that big of a deal yet it's mentioned in a not so nice way. So others say something back, but don't go there because then it's ridiculous and what not. I do feel that some think they know it all and are above the rest, but I just choose to ignore it and skip by it as much as I can. Maybe we all should do that instead of mentioning it and therefore creating a not so nice discussion, it gives a very unpleasant vibe.

Hi Shelly, nice seeing you post. How are you? Glad you like "TAOLG" as well. I think everything about the song is perfect. When I saw the tracklist to the album I was disappointed that it wasn't on the standard version And wondered why it wasn't on there as well. I bought the deluxe simply for the song. I'm also disappointed that there weren't any new tracks for it, which tells me Mariah probably more and likely saved the remaining songs she has for the next album. Hopefully? But I still think she could have still added something other than 2 tracks from the last album. Still, I think "MIAM" is one of her best. It's not bad at all.
