Response to Cluey (44,689)

For me, how Mariah behaves is taken so seriously because she takes herself so seriously and tries so hard. Nothing is natural, from the poses in photos to her directing a video of her walking across the street. Her music videos are 3 minutes of her trying to be as sexy as possible without realising that real sexiness isn't constructed, it just is. And, as I've said before, that all comes from deep insecurity and the need to be validated. What's sad about it is that in real life she's unbelievably beautiful and when just talking to you, she's natural, sweet, friendly and down to earth (at least on quite a few occasions that I've met her, the last one being in 06). But as soon as a camera is in her face her ego kicks in and she goes into pose mode all the while claiming she's "just being casual". Even if it's a joke - which it's not - it's not funny. There's no punch line. She has a concept of who she is publicly in her head and can't seem to break it down, more than likely because of people around her who are also on her payroll (Rachel, the BVlists, J.D. etc.) who seemingly go along with this joke/act. even her husband was a love blind fan beforehand, he made no point of hiding it. And so, to answer your question, it's taken seriously because she'll dress something up as "just walking across the street" when it's clear that's not what's happening, as opposed to Miley or Gaga making blatant publicity stunts and not hiding the fact that they are. It looks stupid.

Mariah's selling out / can't relate to her (44,688)
by Tiina from Finland
| |

|
Remember when Mariah said to Wendy Williams that she thinks that selling all this other crap along with the music was money-hungry (she was shading J.Lo then) and that she was more of a purist and preferred sticking to the music. I always loved that about her. It all started quite innocently when she released her first perfume. But after the 3 first ones, I lost a little respect for Mariah when the perfumes started coming out one after the other and you could see they were nothing special at all and it was all really tacky. She said that Elizabeth Arden, the company she works for to create these perfumes, said she's the hardest-working celebrity they've met, that she's been very involved creating her products yet she went on to say that she didn't name the Lollipop Bling perfume line, that it wasn't her idea and she was embarrassed about it. And then of course the HSN thing and the OPI nail polishes. I'm not saying that her lines were all tacky and basic (I bought her nail polish) but I was a little sad she ended up on this road. And now she's done what I was afraid of, she's began to neglect the music to promote her business ventures. It's so bizarre to think that Mariah Carey, this amazing artist extraordinaire, has actually come out with a sugary drink to sell. I think it speaks volumes about her losing touch with her fans and also losing touch with her artistry. She's become very unrelatable, not on a record but as a person. I love her but it's the truth.

Vines (44,684)

Has anyone else seen the recent vines and pics Mariah has been posting lately? I am really starting to worry about her and feel like something else is going on right now. Not talking about the subway and taxi ones in the blue ball gown, but she just posted another one last night in a black ball gown posing at night in the streets of NYC. She was singing to a friend and pulling her and she even looked a little uncomfortable with how MC was acting. Did anyone see these? I just don't get a good vibe from any of this.

News.com.au is the most read news website in Australia, one of the headlines right now is: "WTF? Mariah's crazy claims about her new beverage." So sad but her image could be beyond repair at this point.

Why must every little thing MC does like riding the subway in a Versace gown be taken so seriously? It was a moment that just happened to make headlines and she looked great doing so. But Gaga walks around like a true nutcase Illuminati monster puppet and the world adores it, Miley Cyrus gives blow jobs to blow up dolls and the world still moves. Beyoncé and Rihanna move records but I honestly never get the best vibes from their music. Heaven forbid MC just does what she wants to do though.

Does "One More Try" remind anyone else of "Never Forget You"? Very nostalgic. MC put her all into this album and it's sad that so many people are so focused and worried about what they can't control. Just enjoy the music. Let the music execs worry about all that political bull. This album in my eyes is like a soap opera. From beginning to end. I love the remixes because they actually add to the story that she has told in the first half before she brings us to the deluxe. Notice that "It's A Wrap" has the same record playing sound as "Heavenly". It's all about the details. I think the duets are genius. Mary J. Blige holds back vocally and I appreciate that because on the record she is playing the role of a supportive friend. R. Kelly is one of the best writers to ever do it. Period. And he adds so much more depth to the song. It was already deep and he took it to another level. If you all aren't a fan of r&b and hip-hop or soul, I just really feel like you couldn't really understand MC at the core of who she truly is as an artist. I told you once and I'm gonna say it again she is an R&B artist that happens to be POPular. It just happens to be that R&B isn't that popular anymore. Congratulations to MC and team for having the #1 R&B album.

When it is easier to get a hold of her soft drink then her Target exclusive deluxe version that is a problem. I heard UMG purposely under shipped the album so even if she did promote there wouldn't be enough copies, not that it is an excuse not to, if people know about it and demand it the label will have to supply it. Most Targets that I went to in Chicago didn't have the deluxe anymore or didn't even have the CD. I finally found one that had several of the deluxe copies but none were the Target exclusive versions (with the alternate cover and America The Beautiful). If the label is doing you dirty, then promote the album and if there is a lack of copies, it will only out their shady agenda. Ugh. Still love the album and I still want to hear the song that was played on the Barbara Walters special (Not Bring It On Home), so jazzy sounding track that I need in my life.

Love them. At first, I hated the cut and paste situation, especially because they didn't even try to make it sound like one recording, but I love Mary and R Kelly's efforts on the tracks. Both of them sounded like they were giving their all in their performance and seemed happy to finally be on a track with her. Mary sounds great and R Kelly is really singing. These tracks fit perfectly on the album and I'm glad we got to hear them. I can take or leave TAOLG, I prefer America the Beautiful. Got both the deluxe and original versions but I can't find the Target exclusive version anywhere (the Japanese version). I might have to order one online, especially if the lyrics are included on that one. Anyone know how and how much they are going for?

Album situation (44,678)
by 123 from USA

|
Is she boycotting promoting her own product to get back at the label? Why has she continued to keep quiet? It was understandable before releasing the album as I though she wanted to keep details under wraps so that her surprises wouldn't be spoiled but this is a mess. It's weird because Steve Bartels accompanied her to the Fresh Air Fund event and stated they would released YDKWTD as the next single and a choreographer posted a pic stating rehearsals for YDKWTD video. Idk if she feels that since she was able to fight Columbia and her ex husband and make it out alive that she can do the same with Def Jam but at what cost? Her health took a major toll last time. I would rather she just promote the album if she can't talk about it yet and then speak on it later. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy that we got a great album, but I aint buying your sugar water Mariah, I'm not happy with you right now. Hopefully she explains what is going on soon, because I can't take it anymore (plays YDKWTD).

This is random but, my alarm clock ringer is "Meteorite". Something about, "Gotta get up, cause you know the world is waiting." Lol. Not to mention one of my other favs Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations is practically featured with his song "Goin' Up In Smoke". I love the fact that they kept his vocals. A lot of artist sample his work but never really give credit where credit is due.

First post MC and thoughts (44,676)
by TiffMelody from USA

|
Hi. I like this board, some of the comments are funny. What I like about MC is that she is an artist who wants to reach the average Joe through her music. I mean she is not some celeb, catering to an elite group of people. She is very deliberate in how she executes her message in her songs. So when I see MC photos I don't see the glamor image or diva photo op, but a vulnerable person. Diva image thing may be her way of showing a brave face. Based on her song lyrics, she is much a deeper person. Even her relationship songs can communicate her inner sense of vulnerability, intimate thoughts. Still, we live in a culture of making snap judgments based off photos (recent being the one at the park). The truth is we don't know MC's schedule. She could've easily had business lunch or setup dinner afterwards and she took some time out for the kids in between. Who knows? MC is very busy, and kids, they don't want to wait. The point is you don't want to be swayed by snap judgments because false perceptions can easily be made off a photo, esp. taken out of context.

Relatability / MJB (44,674)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
I see what you're saying Jewel. It's like Mariah keeps reinforcing the fact that she's so different from everyone else when in reality millions of other people have gone through the same things. She's multiracial. So are millions of people, especially nowadays. She's been in a controlling relationship. Many women have been in that same predicament and are still in it now. She's carried twins (this is the one she just can't let go of). Millions of women have done that for centuries and gotten over it. I'm not saying that these things weren't hurtful, but she keeps harping on it when many people have gone through the same things and moved on. She keeps trying to make it seem like what she's gone through is just so unheard of and that's really keeping people at a distance. What's sad about this is that she has the potential to connect with so many people through these different struggles that she's had, but since she's so attached to the diva antics people literally forget or aren't aware of the fact that Mariah was once a normal human being with life struggles. When it comes to relatability nowadays I think she needs to take notes from MJB. Watch any MJB interview and you won't feel like you're watching an untouchable celebrity, but someone who could be your own friend. Yet she still has the money, fame and most importantly the solid fanbase because people "feel" Mary and it's been that way ever since she came out. Relatability is the best marketing strategy.

The deluxe edition / Thirsty / mature (44,673)
by Badr from USA
| |
|
|
Someone here mentioned that it was a bright move to cancel Angels Advocate. I couldn't agree more. The recycled "remixes", or should I say "leftovers", sound cheap. Mary J. Blige should do a real duet with Mariah. It's A Wrap is not bad but not good either. The lyrics R. Kelly incorporated make no sense. Again, I'm disappointed "The Art of Letting Go" is not on the standard version. On a different subject, I agree with that person who said releasing "Thirsty" as a single isn't a good idea. She would be competing with countless talentless acts. "YDKWTD" is much more elaborate and age appropriate. For those who say she should sound mature, I believe "TAOLG" was the right direction. Perhaps she could try reaching the same audience Alicia Keys and John Legend have. Is it me or this is the most complicated era she's ever had? Right along Glitter.

Ha ha ha. Your comment made me laugh. It was not only funny but weirdly, I've been craving liver with onions. Who knows why? Quick thoughts on the bonus tracks on MIAM. I agree that the Angels Advocate leftovers are underwhelming. Particularly "Betcha Gon' Know". I was so hoping the demo that leaked ("I Checked") was going to be the true Part 2 to this song. But I am happy to have at least finally heard them. I'm more interested in her selection of "America the Beautiful". If she did choose to include this as the closing number as a callback to her debut performance of the song at the NBA finals, I can't helping thinking how incredible it would have been for her to include the original demo of "Vision of Love". She's mentioned in several interviews that she prefers the demo, feels it has more soul and is less produced. And that version would really be the true start to her career. Don't you all think that would've been a pretty cool bonus track?

The Butterfly water and the Unicorn too (44,669)
by Edward from USA

I just bought the Butterfly water, and when I removed the bottle cap, three butterflies came flying out of the bottle singing "I'm thirsty" in unison. At the store they told me that she's releasing the Unicorn and the Rainbow waters soon. I can't wait to see a Unicorn for the first time. Go buy multiple copies of the Butterfly water, it is to die for. I just hope she doesn't release the JD's water, because I would hit him in the head as soon as he comes out of the bottle with his annoying "Y'all know who this is".

Confused (44,667)
by Jewel from USA
| |
|
|
Big fan. Own every album. Love her music but I'm exasperated and utterly confused with Mariah at this point. Amazing talent who came from the real world (Long Island) and made it big. She represented the American dream. She was one of us. Today, I don't get her. For someone as self-consciously demure as Mariah, the lack of quality control is impressive. I don't understand a 43 year old trying to be "eternally 12". Wearing ball gowns on a subway or a playground. (Who does this?) The "diva" stuff has gone too far. The arrogant "dahlings" and bizarre behavior - ugh. Promoting an album by arriving over 4 hours late to the World Music Awards and screwing up the whole show? Making reporters wait for 8+ hours and having someone hold her drink up to her mouth so she can sip her diva drink from a straw? (We've all heard the stories.) The airbrushed album cover with the perfect body yet a very husky figure in real life? Claiming she's "insecure" yet constant display of fake cleavage [...]. How did such a beautiful and talented singer become so detached from reality. Someone really needs to seriously help her out with some image control. I used to want to be like her, loved driving around with my top down blasting her tunes. I love MIAM, some really great tracks on here. But I'm utterly baffled by her persona and just can't relate to her anymore. When her songs play now, I roll up the windows so that no one makes fun of me for being a "lamb".

Mariah's future albums (44,666)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
|
|
No matter what, Mariah will always release music. She's wealthy enough to do and is aware that record companies are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Around the CB era Prince really attempted to take her under his wing, probably after they'd (reportedly) recorded together for "Glitter". He had encouraged her to not sign a record deal. She spoke about it once on a talk show but basically dismissed his idea. Recently she's spoken twice on it, once saying that record companies are becoming obsolete and another time saying that Prince was "ahead of his time" for not having a record company. To go this route would provide Mariah the freedom she so obviously craves and we shouldn't rule it out at some point, perhaps sooner than we think.

Illuminati (44,664)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
|
|
In response to the comment laughing at concepts like the illuminati, the only ridiculous things about it is the name "illuminati" or that Jay Z and Beyoncé are its leaders. The rest of it is real. They are the Freemasons, wealthy individuals who run the governments from behind the scenes or have huge control through their wealth and the companies they own. Be in with them and you'll do well. Rebel and you won't. Mariah's career is a perfect demonstration of it. There's too much detail to list on here re the structure of organisations like the Freemasons, so I'll keep it to Mariah and suggest people take their time to read up on it and especially illuminati symbolism. Once familiar, you'll spot it easily. Mariah herself has referenced the Freemasons on numerous occasions and visibly portrayed their symbolism. The "It's like that" video was completley about the "illuminatii", from the chequered floor, to the masks, columns, rigid dancing, surveillance and theme of transformation and freedom. The performance of "When you believe" at the Oscars was another outright one, even down to numerical factors. She was famous for having one eye covered then broke it with "Rainbow", itself an allusion to light. She's spoken about the powers that be and dark secrets. She's still not over it. Michael Jackson spoke outright of the illuminati, how dark it was and how evil Sony was. It can seem far fetched but it's not at all.

Butterfly sugar water (44,663)
by CMC from NY,NY
| |
|
|
Yes I bought it yesterday, it's pure sugar water with no creative ingredients, with zero nutritional value and artificial red dye. If our girl Mimi's been chugging this stuff it's deff not gonna help her loose that extra weight. The scan on the bottle simply plays the You're Mine video, and 4 pictures that are all the album art for the album. Not that I was expecting anything special but the whole concept is ridiculous. Wow I can't believe I am talking about Mariah's artificial sugar water. WTF is going on?
