There's no comparison (67,299)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|

I wish comparing Mariah to anyone would stop. There is a reason why she's considered one of the top three singers who has ever lived, and that's because she's incomparable. Again, I think the fact that Mariah always wants to be seen as young puts her in a situation where she is never viewed as a legend and always compared to these younger singers as if her career just started 5 years ago. How often do you see people comparing Barbra Streisand to Ariana Grande as if they are equals? Patti Labelle to Rihanna? Chaka Khan to Beyonce? It doesn't happen because we know that those women have all earned the right to not be compared to others. My philosophy is that once you have achieved at least 10 years of success in a given industry, the petty comparisons should end because you're in a different stratosphere than people who just came out. It gets tiresome when people/the media are constantly trying to make Mariah hustle to prove that she's a legend and not in the same category as 20 and 30 year olds.

Rihanna's talent (67,297)

I agree with most of these comments but Rihanna's talent is sex appeal, marketing and great songs. Diamonds is perfection, right? She can't sing a lick but videos and fashion and marketing she has down.

Since we're all bored and waiting for something to happy, hey how about a new list? I can hear your groans. I'm doing this in terms of choices to create hype for the album, not my favorites. 1. Mariah vs Beyonce comparisons (67,294)
by Laury from Spain
| |
|
|
Simple: no comparison possible. Bey person is basic, not creative and gets credit for stuff she doesn't do. Beyonce's last two albums are awful all the way and only sell because of the aggressive marketing. Why compare Mimi to this trash?

Rihanna isn't a real artist. You missed nothing. Only because sex sells, she's famous and she only has the hits because of the producers. I find her and her voice so boring. Katie Melua, Joss Stone, India Arie are so much better. Just to name a few. Most of the unknown singers are way better.

I will never understand the hype around Rihanna. Am I listening to the wrong music or what? I mean why do people think she's a great artist? She is not a writer, can barely sing and isn't even a great performer. Yet she gets a lot of praise. I genuinely want to know what I am missing out on that I can't see why she is considered to be amazing. Beautiful woman though.

But as recent as mid 2000s (either during TEOM or E=MC2 era), Madonna talked about liking Mariah's new record. Mariah has also appreciated Madonna's contribution to the music industry. I don't know if a collaboration will ever happen because their music is so different but I'd like to believe that they have grown out of their comments which they made when they were younger (although Mariah's was a defense) and are in a place in their lives where they are comfortable with each others success and acknowledge each others legendary status.

Yes, Mariah is clearly not forgetful. As Madonna said in 95 or 96 in an interview about MC: "I would kill myself if I were Mariah Carey." Would you like to work with somebody who said that even when it's from the past? I wouldn't.

Ty, that's exactly what I think about Beyoncé. I liked her with Destiny's Child back in day. But as an solo artist she is not so special. A beautiful woman, but musically definitely not overwhelming. But she knows the trends and is really a smart business-woman.

Madonna was never my type of singer/music, although I like some songs of her catalogue. But if you compare her to Rihanna and Beyoncé I agree it's like these two are still in kindergarten especially Riri is overrated as hell. Lol Madonna is the queen of pop. There's no doubt about it. And Mariah is in her own league. As I said in an old post: Mariah made herself a legend while she was just so young. Somebody here said Mariah doesn't like to be called a legend, but musically she is one of the very few the world luckily has to enjoy.

Exactly. Even in the video department, though Bey's self-titled visual album and Lemonade are really, really well executed, they pale in comparison to Madonna's earlier masterpieces. That woman pretty much created and dominated MTV (yup, not even MJ). Seriously you just can't compare those to what she was able to achieve with Vogue, Rain, Take A Bow, Bedtime Story, Erotica, Express Yourself (the list goes on) using more primitive equipment.

It would never happen in a million years, but it would be awesome if Mariah presented her with the award. Or took part in a tribute. She could nail Like A Prayer.

We all know if Bey was the one who stole Mariah's concept then she would immediately be locked in the "I don't know her room". In fact Bey would be the 2014 version of JLo in 2001 because both times Mariah was going through a personal struggle when her concept was stolen. And that pissed her off more. Instead of ignoring Bey, Mariah has continued to address the rumors about the collaboration and expressed how she would be ready "anytime Bey wants to do it" and then she went ahead and took a photo with Beyonce and posted it on her Instagram. Then let's not forget the birthday post calling her "Queen Bey" (which could have gotten Mishka fired and then talking about some inside joke). All in all these would not happen if Beyonce was the one who betrayed Mariah.

Beyonce is so overrated. She is talented. She has managed to steal Mariah's fan blown weave, Tina Turner's stage presence, Janet Jackson's dance moves and everyone thinks she's original. She jacks people's styles, steals their songs and gets credit. Pure bull.

True facts, except I don't give that much credit to Miguel or The Weeknd. Miguel had been grinding away trying to put out his kind of music for sure. The Weeknd is fairly new on the scene by comparison and he seems rather pop vs. R&B. He seems to be getting "poppier" by the minute. I am hopeful for some real, real R&B, especially from the males. For a while there everyone was sounding like Usher, or Chris Brown. Luke James made an effort, but didn't get much play. The next greatest is out there, somewhere though. I hope.

I'm so happy for Madonna. She truly is a one of a kind artist. No offense to Mariah (she'll still be the best vocalist who popularized the pop/R&B and hip-hop fusion still ubiquitous today) or anyone here, but Madge is the single most influential female artist out there, period. She's not the best singer, but she's the one who made the best use of her limited instrument, and at a time when expressing female sexuality was repressed and even frowned upon, she willingly threw herself out there first and powered through every harsh criticism that has been aimed at her. She practically invented shock tactics, and this zero-f***s feminist movement that Bey and Riri have going on right now still seem like child's play compared to what Madonna did in the 80s and 90s. And even though her more recent musical outputs have not been as inspiring, you can still hear some parts here and there that remind you of how she came up with some of the most thrilling pop music in history. Congrats to quite possibly the smartest, most successful, and most recognized woman in music. Well deserved. And yeah, Mariah, you're up next.

The Mariah - Beyoncé comparison (67,278)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
In Bey's defense, she does take a lot of risks. Her last two albums are partly responsible for pushing alternative and progressive R&B to the mainstream, something only The Weeknd and Miguel were doing back then. Her last great song, though, is Love On Top. It was so well constructed that it's the only other Beyoncé song (the other one being Me, Myself and I) than I wish were Mariah's. I will say this, though - the real reason why M and B get compared so many times on this board is because what B is now (hardworking, focused, creative), Mariah was in the 90s, with more humility and commercial success, but met with much less critical acclaim. And that's what most upsets us - she didn't get the thing she deserved the most even when she was at her best.

23 of Mariah Carey's best hip-hop collaboration (67,276)
by B from USA
| |
|

I don't consider Up Out My Face, Lil L.O.V.E., Irresistible, Boy (I Need You), and Loverboy as her best hip-hop collaborations. I would have replaced those songs with Side Effects with Jezzy, TGIFY (Make It Last) with Joe and Nas, Dedicated with Nas, I Still Believe/Pure Imagination with Krayzie Bone and Da Brat, Always Be My Baby Mr. Dupri Mix with Xscape and Da Brat, The One So So Def Remix with Bone Crusher and One and Only with Twista. I love that the author included You Got Me with Jay-Z and Freeway. It should have been released instead of Boy (I Need You).
