I wish you well, Fly like a bird or Saving Grace? (66,457)
by Sheila from United States

"I wish you well" and "Fly like a bird" give me total chills. But "Fly like a bird" to me is her vocal prime. There is no greater vocal performance. Her voice is annointed on that song. Total gospel.

Through The Rain because just after she finished singing it on The Graham Norton Show I jumped up and shouted "I love you Mariah" and she turned, looked at me, waved and said "I love you, too." And I cried like a girl all the way from the South Bank into Soho. Unfortunately on the actual show the credits stopped rolling and the programme ended about three seconds before this ha ha so I could be full of it. Hero for karaoke. CTTA is pretty infantile in lyrics and structure but I like the final "They can try but they can't take that away..." part on Oprah. She sings it movingly and much better than the record. Unfortunately her voice was [censored] on that show and it's cringe so just skip to that line lol. A music question. Hasn't happened on this board in a while haha.

Can't Take That Away for sure. TTR was huge in the Philippines and writing it was therapeutic for Mariah so it will always have a special place in my heart, but to me, with CTTA, the vocals are full and powerful from start to finish, which matches the song's message more and makes it more impactful. It also has an angst to it that's just infectious. Plus it happens to feature one of Mariah's most memorable and impressive vocal runs towards the end.

That's a hard one. The bridge to Through The Rain is beautiful, when she opens that voice up an soars, but for me, probably Hero live. It just has magic.

Yes I'm aware Can't Let Go stopped her original run of chart toppers. But as Mariah has said, they also didn't want her at-the-time streak of #1's to end, from Fantasy to Honey. It's likely because other artists (like Whitney) had long mid-career streaks.

Through The Rain, Hero or Can't Take That Away (66,451)

Whis is MC's most inspirational song? I can speak for me. I love TTR. That is a song I play on the way to work on days I don't want to go. The video is perfection and my favorite part, the song has no background vocals. At least not on the record. Shade. But for real. That song gives me power. Which of the three give you all power?

Is the depth still there? (66,450)
by Marissa from USA

I also wonder what type of lyrics we will get from Mariah with her next album. Since the Bulochnikovs have stepped on the scene, it seems like they have drained all of the depth and substance out of Mariah that once existed. I fear that that will show up in her lyrics. When does she even have time to reflect and look within herself to come up with good lyrics when she is surrounded by her entourage all day, every day? Hell they might even be giving input into her music. If I hear "Nobu Nobu Nobu Nobu" or "empower your girls" in a song, I'm burning the album. I'm afraid that there will be no vulnerability in her music anymore because it seems like the one thing she's been running from all of 2016 is looking within and acknowledging any other emotion besides "having fun". (I put that in quotes because you can see in her eyes that she is not as happy as she once was in life. It's almost like she's memorized a script and acting out what she thinks happiness looks like rather than it flowing naturally. It just feels forced to me. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.) What do you all think?

I loved the trailer but I'm a little concerned that she might push the diva image further down our throats. Like the part where she is laying around the house in lingerie and diamonds. I hope when the full episode airs, we see, she says something like "just kidding, I just got back from a shoot". But I'm keeping an open mind as of now. But if I see the Bulochnikovs trying to be the new Kardashians, I'll be pissed.

Dahlin' I only believed it because it came out of Mariah's mouth. This is the same woman who flat out denied hearing "Drunk In Love" on air. Plus she was seen listening to "Love Drought" while she was lounging around on the yacht. So I do think she listened to it. I will however agree that Beyonce's albums sell nowadays purely on hype. There are very few songs in it that are actually good.

I think this happened around the "Heartbreaker"/Rainbow era. One look at that pink crochet top with her boobs basically hitting you in the face while she leaned over and shook it around and you just know that them babies got some work done. Hahha. I love the "Heartbreaker" video to death though. Easily my top 5. But I think that's when they were well enlarged. Then gradually it kept getting bigger (because of push up bras dahlin') and now we have the golden globes. Frankly I think with a smaller size of the globes, Mariah would look a lot thinner. I mean she basically has a snatched waist line and great legs so ya.

This is something I want to yell at lambs when they go like "Oh Mariah has been flashing skin since she took her dress off during Honey, so why are you getting bothered now? Because she is 46?" or stuff like "would you be surprised if Mariah did this at 20 instead of her 40s?" The Butterfly era sexiness has effortless, it's graceful, it's beautiful. It suits her. She had this weirdly awesome mixture of a sense of self dignity (where she knew she was a freaking super star) and yet looked so humble (that smile, so beautiful, so genuine). She wore many outfits that showed off her legs, her cleavage and a lot more, but it never looked trashy. Her beauty was unmatched, her confidence, through the roof. She had this beautiful combination of "strong independent woman" with a slight reflection of vulnerability (I swear I didn't realize I named 2 of her songs back to back). That made her the girl you can relate to and also the girl you would show respect to. Basically nothing during that time was forced, fake, harsh or "trying too hard". Now we have the fake orange tan, the weird lashes, the lingerie moments, the ugly fishnets, the fake smile, the bad wigs. Basically everything that screams "trying too hard". The main problem now is Mariah doesn't need to try so hard, she is still beautiful, she has a killer body, her legacy is still intact. No one is telling her to cover from head to toe. Take note from your 27 year old self Mariah. You are better than this, you are greater than this. Don't let your orange manager influence you.

I love that era too. The second photo you posted could be easily mistaken for a shoot from 1990. The only clue is her perfectly shaped brows she has from 1993-94 onwards. I wondered if she started wearing more make-up recently because of shooting the reality show and it's just something she's kept going.

Re: Getting MC back to the top of the charts (66,427) (66,441)
by Daydream327 from USA

Not so much of how the music sounds today because I'm sure she does listen to a lot of the current music but just how much the music industry has changed in terms of the way music is now being released and shared. We are in the digital age, going to the store and buying a physical CD is a thing of the past. Majority of sales now come from streaming and iTunes. People rarely listen to the radio as well. I believe even YouTube streams now count towards the Hot 100. And with such easy access to music nowadays it's so easy for people to listen to one song and quickly move on to the next. It's so much harder to stay relevant and current in today's music climate, because it's just so much music. Me personally I can attest to this because I'm a fairly young lamb (24) and purchase all my music from iTunes, and I also stream a lot of music on Apple Music and Tidal. Honestly, I can't see Mariah topping the charts again if she doesn't get on board with the times. Especially being that her fanbase has greatly decreased over the years, only 56k of her fans purchased her last album, that is a problem. It's sad because being the legend that she is she should have a core fanbase that will always support her music regardless of what the current trends in music are. Mariah has to start to build her fanbase back up. She has to stop waiting years to release new music, she can no longer do that and expect to move units. It's not the 90's/early 00's anymore and she doesn't have that strong devoted fanbase anymore. I'm just being real here. I'm all for Mariah releasing a couple of free EP's on Apple Music of new music or unreleased music. Or even doing some remixes to some current songs. This is a good start to gaining some hype behind her name again. She has to release music and not just music but amazing music, music that stands out, music that is catchy. She has to let go of her ego and realize she is not where she use to be career wise. And before anything she has to revamp her image. She needs a new stylist, a new manager, pretty much a whole new team. I don't know who works with Beyonce and Rihanna but whoever they are Mariah needs them on her team. If Mariah wants to appeal to younger audience being that they purchase majority of today's music she has to change a lot if not I can't see it happening. Most of Mariah's team are also very close friends with her, that is not good and it won't help her any. She needs a team who can be completely honest with her, I feel like that is exactly what she's missing and could be crucial in getting her back at the top.

I'm hoping the docuseries focuses more on the tour and less on her recent antics and entourage. This series can silence the critics who say [...] can't sing and can make her more likeable. Or it can have the opposite effects. We'll see. The trailers have been promising.

We need another "Hero" or "Heartbreaker". Along with a decent video. I wish Mariah would tone down the make up, get a stylist and dress more modest. I'm so over the sexiness. It's getting old.

Do you actually believe Mariah listened to Beyonce's album? She lied dahling. "Lemonade" is garbage. And to think some of her fans believe she deserves the Grammy for album of the year is hilarious. We all know Adele is going to win and is deserving of that Grammy. Unless someone else releases a more better album that actually sells. The media loves hyping up Beyonce's album sales.

Implants / push up bra (66,436)
by Shezz from Pk

So when exactly did the infamous boob job/push up bra as Mimi likes to call it happen? I remember watching one of her documentaries (also posted here previously) in which they said Tommy got Mariah a boob job around or before the Daydream era - they show them come together to an event and she suddenly looked heavier up there. But then seeing Mimi L's beautiful butterfly era pics you don't quite see it. Once I read she did it during the Rainbow era. Does anybody know when? Maybe she got them to where they are gradually over time? Sorry some of you might judge this to be a very shallow topic but since Mimi herself is clearly still obsessed with them how could we not? Lol. Just curious. Mimi herself denies ever getting it, right?

So flutter through the sky, Butterfly (66,434)
by Edward from USA

|
During the "Butterfly era" there was this beautiful ethereal aura around Mariah I can't explain, it was just there. Nothing seemed forced during that time. Mariah was pure fire. It was not only the music, but the way she carried herself and the emotion in her voice. I love me some Daydream, actually it is an album I hold close to my hear, but Butterfly being a completely different sound and its many colors and depth totally captivated me. In numerous occasions some friends have asked me if Butterfly was a new CD, that they love this or that song. It is really timeless. No wonder it is listed as one of the albums you should listen to before you die. As Mimi L. already stated with those beautiful pics, Mariah was sexy, showing lots of skin at times, but she never looked as if she was trying too hard and far from trashy. It's not about her not showing skin, it is about doing it keeping in mind that she's a legend with lots of money to make things happen in a way that she could present herself as the best. Maybe she hasn't realized it yet, but her humble demeanor made her look somewhat innocent and much more beautiful. She was already filthy rich back then, but it was more believable to me when she sung deep songs then than when she does it now.

Tommy is a business man and if he didn't want to release Butterfly because of its subject matter, the entire project would have been shelved. Butterfly was released as a single internationally in several countries and got full remix treatment etc. Mariah has gone on record saying the reason only two singles got a "proper" release from that album was because the execs didn't want her streak of #1s to end as they were trying to beat Whitney's streak of 7. Butterfly in fact had more videos on rotation on MTV (Honey, Honey remix, Butterfly, My All, My All remix, The Roof, Breakdown) and more singles released globally than any subsequent album.

Taking risks (66,432)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)

Established artists such as MC have to be very careful about what risks they are willing to take musically without pushing their faithful listeners away. The reason I say this is because Usher's new album is on track to sell 30k first with a hit on radio he went in the lean and B direction and it has cost him big time. While I want MC to work with new producers and co-writers to freshen things up she needs to keep some of her usual collaborators around for the purpose of that classic MC sound. Honestly JD did great work with YDKWTD, and MILG from MIAM if you ask me while Memiors was great as far as cohesiveness the production become stale very quickly. What MC needs at this point musically and creativitly is balance old school ballad MC with minimal production and singing, and some great fun mid and up tempos with memorable hooks.
