Re: Concerning Ariana (57,468) (57,473)

The thing is Jono, they were trying to compare Mariah to Whitney as in a powerhouse voice, but their styles were completely different, the way they used their voices was different as well and even their music wasn't alike, they both were aiming for different things. Ariana did little to no effort to sound different from Mariah at the start. Probably she didn't find herself yet and is taking her some time. But Mariah already was Mariah since that Vision Of Love. It predicted the great future, by her own hand. Btw Jono, with the mention of Whitney and Mariah (amazing duo), I went back to look for the video where both artists talk about each other and is wonderful to see so much respect and class. Here it is for some nostalgia.

Haha, I would say is true, but in that period of time so many songs started that exact same way, it was really cheesy.

Well, her manager pushed the whole "the new voice, the new Mariah" thing when her career launched, her team probably thought it was a good idea to do the comparison. The problem is that the comparison went beyond, it wasn't just the whistle here and there and her girlie high pitch, it became everything M mentioned in the previous post, from the hair and hair color to the clothing, the movements, the odd position of the head when getting pictures taken that is so Mariah-esque. I guess somewhere along her career it backfired, because people would start putting her down mentioning all the things that she couldn't do like Mariah and as you well said Edward, Mariah didn't even feel the Ariana breeze from her side. I read once in an article that when Ariana has to do interviews (and like most artists there is a list of what to ask and what not) one of the questions the journalists were not allowed to ask was anything related to Mariah Carey. I honestly think that the whole "the next Mariah" charade fell flat after Ariana's AIWFC performance (she didn't even bother to change a single note or input her own style in the song, she was simply imitating Mariah at her best) and her attempt at making herself the new Christmas girl with her Santa song, doesn't anyone find the lyrics of the song like a rip off? It's the same message Mariah sends in hers but with different wording. Granted, at Christmas, everybody releases Christmas stuff and all fail at delivering haha. If she is changing her way, it is about time. She sings well but she has created her career on the back of somebody's else. I also think that crediting her as a songwriter, when every song she "wrote" is accompanied by other 10 songwriters is dubious, then again that's last line is just my personal guessing haha.

Lives in Mariah's shadow. Although she can sing, her voice isn't very impressive. (At least to me.) It lacks power and soul. She'll never have half the voice Mariah does. I like her music and think that some of her songs like "The way" and "Baby I" were number one material though. But oh well. Mariah has been the last legendary female singer. Whitney was jealous of Mariah and shaded her when she first came out. And looked what happened. They collaborated on an amazing song 8 years later. So who knows, maybe history we'll repeat itself? If Mariah starts to like her. Because she obviously doesn't lol.

Lamb Bible (well-done, with mint sauce) (57,469)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
"And the devil did smite the world with Ariana, to piss offeth the lambs. And lo, it did work, as the lambs bleated in unison, for lambs need some other person to bitch about other than the Mariah. And Patti begat Aretha who begat Whitney who begat Celine and so on and so forth. Then descended God mightily from his heavens and said unto the lambs: I sent you the Mariah and you shall go forth and spread that she is perfect, that she doeth no wrong, that she farteth the fresh air you breathe." (Lamb Bible, Book of Pointlessness, Verses 1 to Infinity.) You wanna know why the nay-sayers, the negatives, the "haters" like Randy, myself or whomsoever, keep on? It's because when nonsense - actual nonsense - is spouted, because it just-makes-you-feel-better-inside, well, it's not good enough. It's a little retarded. Rather there be honest debate than total, utter, nonsense. It seems the Kingdom of the Lambs is in the keep of the self-righteously indignant, and everyone else must live in fear of labels. I look forward to a day when honest debate is free, emotions are honest and truths are discussed. Until then, people like Randy should not back off, as he has done, for fear of reprisal. [censored] that. Post what the [censored] you like. God save the queens.

Concerning Ariana (57,468)
by Jono from USA

Even though I will have my issues, mainly because you can't talk about her without bringing in Mariah somehow, I will give credit where it's due. She has a great voice. Does she use it correctly? Heck no. But like others have posted, most of the blame is her team. It's not her fault that she was born too late, and is releasing music in an era where unique artistry is no longer a value. It's about being "relevant" and catching the fire, even if it burns out shortly after. That's the problem with most of this generation's pop music. It's so current that it has an expiration date. I can see it from both sides - Ariana obviously is influenced by Mariah and is a fan, but also wants to be herself. Our girl was in the very same predicament in 1990 when they were trying to compare her to Whitney. I can also see Mariah being annoyed that all the work she's put in her 25 years, is being compared to someone who's been in the industry for less than two. You have to earn your stripes. Mariah had to to finally be acknowledge as Mariah, and not Whitney 2.0. That being said I don't think Mariah has any ill will against Ariana. The only way to land on her bad side is if you screw her over, and she has yet to do that. I just think Mariah is playing it smart by not acknowledging her, only so that the media doesn't take the story and run with it and constantly compare the two. She also knows that they will paint her as the "old" one, and Ariana as the young new Mariah, and we all know that would not be ok.

Ariana (not a reply) (57,467)
by Lara from Middle East
| |
|

On the radio I heard a song by Ariana so I shazamed it and it turned out that it's another singer "Pia M(ar)IA" singing "Do it again". My point Ariana may be a good singer and because of that she dared covering Mariah's songs but what makes our elusive chanteuse stands out is her tone. Velvety, buttery, soothing, you name it. Her voice is immediately recognizable. That's for me more important than her range and belts. Anyone can learn to sing but not every voice is "studiogenic".

I read an article that was ranking James Bond themes with the links for each song and i came across "License to Kill" by Gladys Knight. The first few seconds are surprisingly so close to Mariah's "Can't let Go". Any one else agree?

Merry Christmas deluxe vinyl (57,465)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|

Hey Lambs. Does anyone know anymore information about when and where the Merry Christmas deluxe vinyl will be available? The only release date I've read about is tomorrow, October 23rd in the U.K. Is it going to be released everywhere, or just in the U.K? HMV in Canada just started carrying Mimi vinyls in the past couple months, so I hope I can get it in Canada this year.

M, Arianna acknowledged Mariah as her main influence when she first came out. Ariana said that Mariah had a bigger range than hers, and that she felt flattered when she was compared to her. When she was asked about surpassing Mariah's 18 #1's, she stated that it would be a ridiculous goal. But after a while it's boring when everybody is comparing you to somebody else, especially when that person you've been compared to doesn't even acknowledge you. I haven't ever heard Mariah utter Ariana's name, not once. The problem: Ariana was created in Mariah's image, it was an obvious copycat. It went from being influenced by Mariah to imitating Mariah, and I think Mariah resented that. I don't necessarily blame Ariana for that, I blame her team. She's obviously trying to find her own voice now, and it seems to be working. She and her team have come to realize that those who have tried to replicate Mariah have failed miserably; Mariah is often imitated, but never duplicated. Ariana and her team have decided to put Mariah as an off-topic item on all her interviews, that's why you won't hear Mariah being brought up on Ariana's interviews.

Ariana Grande (57,461)
by Malcolm from Asia
| |

I don't know if I'm the only one who noticing these things on Ariana Grande but I'm seriously bothered. As far as I've known, she really loves Mariah when she first came out. She even said this "I love Mariah Carey. She is literally my favorite human being on the planet." She covers Emotions and AIWFCIY. It started all the comparisons and she always says that it is a good thing and she's flattered about it. But when her second album comes, all of a sudden, it changes. When she interviewed by a magazine and she has listed her most favorite singers, no "Mariah Carey" mentioned. She often mentions Whitney, Madonna and Celine in interviews and cover their songs. Claiming that Mariah is her idol, is that only a gimmick? Is that only a passage for the public to notice her? And now, she's shading Mariah like she "doesn't know her" but copying her career path: - Duet with Michael Bublé - Having an original christmas song and attempting to achieve the success of AIWFCIY (which she failed obviously) - Copying MC's style of naming songs (ex. "Be My Baby", "My Everything", “Break Your Heart Right Back”) - Some of MC's 90's outfits - The iconic water scene in "My All" MV to her "Love Me Harder" MV - Even the "Honey" choreo in her song "Problem" - And last but definitely not the least and the most irritating thing for me, the usage of a font for all of her works Honestly I love Ariana, but after her second album only her music is the thing I like about her. I just wish and hoping her team is the one who's responsible with these ridiculously things and not her. Mariah doesn't say any bad thing about her to do that, she must even pay respect to her because the "Mariah Carey influence" is literally obvious.

Patti had the bigger voice compared to Aretha. Both are dramatics though. Mariah of course can compare to or even be better than Aretha in aspects of her voice, like texture manipulation, octave leaps, melismas and ease in the upper belts but Aretha had the bigger voice, that's undeniable. Aretha's sheer volume would swallow Mariah's lighter voice because a light lyric will be much lighter and smaller than a dramatic.

I think she has an Entertainment Tonight promo interview for the movie. That's what we know for now. I hope she goes on some morning, daytime, and late night TV to promote. Maybe another Christmas NBC deal. Talk about the movie, Beacon shows, book, lipstick, and maybe slightly address last year's Rockefeller performance, "Yes I will be performing live this year for the tree lighting. NY is my home." She can do the Today Show and have Finna perform Oh Santa, do giveaways on Ellen, make Andy switch seats yet again, and play musical impressions with Jimmy doing Christmas carols. Join Michael Buble for a tune or two featuring John Legend. And maybe, just maybe give Wendy some scoop on her billionaire boyfriend. And again maybe, just maybe gift the lambs a 3 song Christmas EP in the spirit of giving. Also maybe headline a charity event that will play on ET, E., and Access Hollywood. Present an award for artist of the year at AMA's having JLo introduce her as the best selling female artist of all time. There's so much she can do, afterall, Christmas is her holiday. When will your fave?

Charmbracelet tour in Zürich (57,457)

On this very day 12 years ago, October 22nd 2003, I went to my first and only (so far) Mariah Carey Concert in Zürich, Switzerland. I still remember it so well, it was an amazing concert. I'm so happy that someone filmed the entire concert and that it's on YouTube, so I can re-watch it at every anniversary.

Is that why when Mariah sang with Pattie on a song, I can't remember the name of it, but when Pattie belted really loud when Mariah hit a whistle? I agree with what you said, it reminds of the scene in Dream Girls when Jennifer Hudson is mad at Beyounce because Bey was cheating with Jen man and when they were singing Jen was singing with her full voice and was drowning Bey's voice out.

I'm also in the US and I couldn't access the video. So it was a challenge for me, and I was able to extract an mp3 and video. Since the video or mp3 of this particular performance is not for sale, I don't think it would constitute piracy sharing it with you guys in here. They are in my dropbox folder, so you can either watch and listen or download them. Enjoy.

Andrew I hate beer and love liquor. And Bino and Lamb O Chop I have been screaming this stuff from the top of my lungs for ever, I'll move on. Do you guys think with all of this Christmas hoopla, she will record and finally release a cover of "My Favorite Things"? Maybe as a stand alone single or to go with her movie. She said a long time ago it was one of her favorite songs of all time. When she released MCIIY I just knew it would be on there.

I would say that Mariah was the star that night. She sounded the best and looked the best. "Make it happen" was the best performance. When I watch it I wish I could have been there to experience the joy and excitement of seeing Mariah live. Say what you want about her voice as of now. We will probably never hear one like hers again.

Patti Labelle is a dramatic soprano. And her voice is much more stronger and powerful than Aretha's. Even if I wasn't in Aretha's league, I still would never be scared to take her on. (Even though her voice died decades ago.) She sounds awful now. I disagree about Mariah. I think she definitely held back out of respect. Her voice was capable of going head to head with Aretha.
