Article: My "Auld Lang Syne" will cost you millions (57,413) by Lee TS from USA
A little late but go head girl, get your coins together. I'm sure Nick will be doing his DJ gig on NYE. Did I do that? Oops. Lol no but know you're worth Mariah. And tell Packer to get behind the Mean Moms project and have you added as the 4th mom. Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz, and Mariah Carey. How perfect haha. Mariah's an A-list actress didn't you know? I thought she told you.

I heard a rumour that Mariah actually had nodule surgery after the Daydream tour and her voice post 1996 is the result of that.

You're right Randy. In [...] opinion she had problems after each tour: 1993 was great but singing those [...] songs live was too much for her and 94 showed us a MC changing the key to her songs [...] the first time. Still [...]. Daydream was the same and after the mini tour she suffered even more but still good. 97 the first recordings were the best vocals to me: WYC, MA, Out [...] 4th July. But there's the answer she was always making fun of how much Crystal, Moet she drank during those other recordings and the weird laugh laugh environment she was at while recording Breakdown "the smoky studio" and partying night after night drinking and don't know if more. The last recording CME shows a more raspy tone. To me it was that: she felt free and drank too much and if not doing drugs herself she was certainly surrounded by that [...]. And if you listened to her brother Morgan little interview for Radar Online he - obviously for a good check - speaks about how big her alcohol problems are ever since Tommy (97) that he can't recall a single day Mariah is not with a glass of alcohol in her hand and that since 2001 she's been dangerously mixing it with [...] meds she takes in order to control her diagnozed bipolarity. You might say he lies and such but we all have heard the difference since 97 specifically. He says he's truly afraid MC becomes the next Whitney or MJ because she just listen to her yes people and believes that rules of physics don't apply to her just because she is Mariah Carey. Sad but I think that yes, she pushed her voice beyond her own limits but that isn't the cause of her vocal problems, to me even paid for the note, what Morgan says is closer to what really happens. Hope she gets the help and loving care she desperately needs.

I'm sorry but I had to chuckle about the battle of the divas, you should film these debates. It's giving me Paris Is Burning vibes like an underground ballroom type of deal. I want to know who wins in the ballgown category, most likely Beyonce I'm guessing. Mariah did fine at Divas Live and she had fun with it. Yes I would've liked if she did 2 weeks of vocal rest for the event but it is what it was. I felt Aretha kind of put Mariah in her place and Celine definitely held her own. It was moments upon moments. I hope Mariah will have her Aretha moment in maybe another 10 years, blessing some young budding diva with a live duet. But can you imagine if she would still have a voice then? Not shady but being honest. With Celine I don't know about a duet but maybe M can write a song for her. And they can definitely bond over the twins and shoes.

Re: Randy (57,409) by nikki from usa
Mariah had a series of health problems during '98. She was newly divorced and living out of hotel rooms after having 4 years of a stable home environment. She discovered just how catastrophic smoke was to her voice and a lot of this was documented on her specials, behind-the-scenes, and even news at the time. Mariah suffered from heart palpitations, hives, and frequent illness. Divas Live wasn't supposed to happen, her doctor ordered her against it, but MC didn't want to give up the chance to sing with Aretha despite her sore throat. Mariah talked about this at the time on VH1. All of this would explain why her vocals so drastically improved in '02 when she was on another label and had a steady home without all the smoking rapper hangouts. I was there live in MN for her Good Morning America in '02 and that was completely live and on point. I don't know how you missed Macy's, The Philharmonic with a cracked rib no less, her Rockefeller performances over the years, or duet with Buble. People go overboard in their obsession to "prove" MC can't sing. How many times can someone sing the same song and sound different every time they sing it? Some parts are going to be similar as the performances stack up. But, if you're gonna lip a track, you lip it. Not Frankenstein it from 6 different lives over a decade for 1 track. I'd also like to know how many times you checked out the same track from Celine's "live" shows over the past decade and compared them all note to note?

If you have lost faith in Mariah Carey that's your problem, but don't come in here as Baby pointed out with your sarcasm, cynicism and confusion trying to afflict those of us who see Mariah clearly for who she is, the best, number 1. And don't need approval from fan bases of artists on a much lower level than Mariah's to validate all she stands for. If by now you don't know why you fell in love with Mariah or you waver everytime someone tries to make her seem less than she is, which in my own experience is a lot of times, then you aren't strong willed enough nor a true lamb because a true lamb is stubborn in a good way and after all is said and done in our eyes and how it truly is, Mariah Carey is the one. The best.

Thank you so much for sharing your insight and not backing down from your opinion. I too feel the same way about Mariah's performing abilities. While I am a long time fan of hers, I believe she does a lot of smoke and mirrors when performing live that are no illusions to fans like us in the know. Please don't let some of the blinded fans of here dissuade you from sharing your views about MC. Just because fans express the truth or unflattering things about our favorite singer does not make us haters.

I also think Patti is wonderful and totally agree with the voice comment, I love Patti's tone. Never really knew Aretha feared her but who could blame her, Patti has an amazing attitude and stage presence. Guess all have an opposite. I still was talking in general but thanks for the info.

Re: VH1 Divas Live 1998 (57,384) (57,404) by May from Denmark
Hi Bino. To start I want to clarify in case of anything that I didn't bash Mariah or had a negative comment regarding her act. The video you linked is not talking about the song I mentioned btw, I simply described the very final act, how Mariah was invited to sing, she did fine, she moved back and then Aretha kept on calling to sing. If it was or not Celine's turn I cannot know, it looked more like whoever steps first. If I had to say something negative regarding some of the songs that wouldn't be against MC or Celine or any of the amazing singers of that VH1 except for Aretha herself. While a great artist (though I don't find her voice appealing to my ears) I highly dislike that she gets in the middle of others when they are singing or directly sings their part. Which is exactly something Carol mentioned on the video you linked, which I thank you because I haven't seen it before.

I'm going to reply (57,403) by Randy from USA
I normally don't reply on this board when I say something that is easily proveable and get called names, but this time I won't be silent. Someone brought up the Divas 98 topic and said that MC held back because she had class and Celine didn't which made my blood boil, so I responded. I didn't start this topic. I'm starting to realize maybe it's a misunderstanding of culture. Among black gay men on the East coast we argue our favorite divas like guys argue over who's the best on football teams. We have YouTube viewing sessions, we argue sales, relevancy and cultural impact. There are groups on Facebook like The Legends Panel designed specifically for these debates. When there's a spades (card game) party or an awards show, many of us gather and argue. I am a Mariah fan. Have been since the beginning and when we have these debates about Whitney, Beyonce, Patti, Aretha etc. The #1 thing agreed on by others, is that MC cannot perform live. When I argue differently, I am asked for receipts. Receipts mean proof. I have seen every American live televised performance by MC period. When my friends play certain years 1998-2015 of their divas, especially Patti, Aretha and Celine I am hard pressed to find a performance by MC that wows and does not have the full voice belt notes lipped. The Glitter performances of 01 and that impromptu for the fans backstage at Jimmy Fallon are my exceptions. Did you know that there are YouTube videos that go through note for note that she lip syncs based on whether she chose the album track to pull select notes from or a prerecorded vocal that she uses for multiple performance that matches the rasp in her live voice? Probably not. I think when you are a fan sometimes it's hard to objectively hear your artist. I wish Baby and Gino could sit with me in Atlanta one afternoon and go through MC performances. I have plenty of evidence that the voice went through something post 1996 and there's been a lot of smoke and mirrors to cover it up. And the whole argument about well it's 20 years later she can't sing like she used to? Check Patti Labelle singing You'll Never Walk Alone in 1983 at Motown's 25th and then 32 years later at Divas 2004. And Patti didn't start in 2004. But I hold onto that from 1990-1996 MC was quite something and even now she can write anyone under the table. But don't go there with me about live performances.

I don't think it was the concerts but I think the constant recording music took its toll. Just think of all the songs and remixes Mariah song and re sung, then think of all the songs she song that never saw the light of day, who knows it could be in the hundreds. She didn't call her home a prison for nothing. Sing sing anyone? I think that is what took its toll on her, imagine having to sing Emotions, Fantasy and VOL, and ANTYNAF over and over again and tell me that won't put a strain on you.

I don't think she pushed herself too hard during the Daydream Tour. It was only 7 concerts, 3 in March and 4 in June. I'm not an expert, but I don't think that would be too much for her.

B*tchy PTA mom (57,397) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
So according to the article, MC will appear in the movie as a "bitchy PTA mom". I think it's going to be fun. I'd love to see what she does with it. As much as I would want Mariah to be the star of the movie, I think her decision of taking on a smaller role is good. It'll generate interest in the movie without taking away from the story.

I actually prefer Mariah's voice in '97. She still sounded pretty powerful to me. People go on about how her voice isn't what it used to be. But what they don't understand is that Mariah has the most hardest songs to sing out of any female artist. She also pushed herself too hard during the "Daydream" tour.

[...] with you. But I honestly thought her voice started to have problems during the D aydream era. I know iy sounds crazy right. There is a video on YouTube that shows that even though technically speaking Daydream was here best era there were a lot of problems with her singing such as vocal placement that in her previous era's was not a problem. Also I never can understand how you go from powerful and rich belts (95) to light and airy in (96). l think Mariah was having problems with her belting in 96, not really her range or ease with belting but more so with her power. Good example is Grammys in early 96, it was a great performance but she was straining vs OSD in later 96 during her concert lighter airier vocals not as powerful but less strained and more impressive. I think it caught up to her in 97, when both the power and the ease of belts was lacking sometimes because of vocal fatigue. But hey if it can happen to people like Sam Smith and Adele who Mariah can sing under the table. I'm not surprised if she had vocal problems to.

Article: Exclusive first look inside Mariah Carey's Christmas movie (57,392) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
Oh Santa is getting new lyrics? Only Mariah would think to write new verses for a song that's already deliciously lyrics-heavy. I'm so excited for this project because I love when she grows and graduates like she's done with taking on directing a whole film. Who knew when she directed Fantasy in '95 that she'd be so good at it? She's a natural storyteller, some of her songs read as novel synopses and scripts. I might even do a list of them just because. I almost can't believe Mariah and Lacey Chabert had never met before this movie. Like, what kind of Elusive Chanteuse are you MC? Even Oscar winning actresses can't act cool around you, never mind introduce themselves. And Drew Lachey from 98° is involved too? So much great synergy this whole year surrounding her and counting. Team Mariah is 120% on point. Keep it up you all.

The media and sexism (57,390) by Jono from USA
I knew that as soon as the "inside exclusive" story came out of Mariah directing, that the usual hating media outlets would run with the story and only emphasize certain aspects. Sure enough, Showbiz 411 decided to highlight that Mariah "made a group of children and their parents wait seven hours to shoot a few minutes". Obviously we see where this is going - a continuous slandering of Mariah as some self-absorbed diva with no regards to anyone else. What this story conveniently left out is that the people waiting were extras. I've worked as an extra multiple times before on a TV show, and it is absolutely normal, in fact standard industry practice, to be waiting. You are an extra. Meaning, it's a nice word for "moving/breathing furniture". You are basically there to fill the scene so it looks natural. You are at the bottom in terms of priority. So yes, you will be made to wait until you are needed, and kept around until you are no longer needed. That is because there are a million other things the production has to worry about that is more important than a non speaking background role. Calling you out, slanderous media. Interesting too, considering the report that came out last month about how Mariah on the Game of War set was actually really professional and easy to work with, while the male execs were actually the divas. But I guess since they're men, they can't be seen as "demanding" or "bossy" and having "diva behaviors", right? In fact, look up any female entertainer and there is bound to be some story about how "difficult" they are to work with. As for men, you would have to search hard to find even a fourth of those stories. I see you, problematic media.
