MC praises (56,764)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
It's nice to see current hot artists giving shout outs to Mariah or acknowledging her influence. Within this week Katy Perry gave a very public shout out to Mariah (which was well documented) and acknowledged her influence. Then we have Justin Bieber who was asked during a radio interview about who his favourite female artist is and he said Mariah Carey (which I will admit was a bit surprising for me because I did not expect it, but I was pleasantly surprised and happy). He did say even before that growing up, Mariah's music has been a big influence. I see a lot of people take Katy's comment of "sit back and enjoy" (or something like that) as a shade and honestly I don't think it's shady at all, sometimes fans just stir up rumors. Plus I find it funny that people are pissed that Katy talked about Mariah's influence. Like why? If she felt that she needed to give a shout out to Mariah it is completely her prerogative, it doesn't matter if people think some other artist had a bigger influence, Katy isn't speaking for everyone, she is speaking for herself. Same with Justin. I saw a lot of comments about why the hell did he say Mariah and not Beyonce or Ariana and I am like what is this even about? His influence, his favorite, his choice, he can name whoever the heck he wants. I swear if these shout out were to Beyonce or Taylor or anyone apart for Mariah, they wouldn't get such hate. Anyways people can stay pissed, Mariah's impact is undeniable and she is, I think the most copied artist of all time. From the use of melisma, whistle register, cut out jeans to them blinged out microphones, MC has been an influence in everything. Haters gonna hate, but Mariah's gonna get paid.

Billboard article about Katy Perry and Mariah (56,762)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
I read the article and the comments. The comments are divided. Some commenters say Mariah's impact is undeniable and others say she has made no impact at all. It's 50/50. Most posters say Madonna has made more of an impact and I have to disagree. Mariah's collaboration with ODB is the blue print every Pop song featuring a rapper is based on. Madonna no, Janet influence is felt more than Madonna's. Madonna's impact was felt in the early 2000's through Britney until Britney and Justin started working with R&B and Hip-hop artists.

The singles from MIAMTEC should have been #Beautiful, Dedicated, Make It Look Good, and Meteorite. I love Faded but I think it would have performed similarly to YM(E). MIAMTEC is a musical masterpiece that deserves to be heard.

It is a beautiful song, up there with her best in my opinion. The ending is so heartbreaking though. I'm glad she's with someone more mature now and hope it lasts.

Me too, I just love Faded so much. I think they really planned it to be a single but because of unfortunate events that time, it didn't push through. I will not complain if MC will put Faded in her next album, I think it will be nice. It will be similar on what she did in "Betcha Gon' Know" and "It's A Wrap" and she can release it as official single in next era. It's so beautiful that I can't accept the fact that it will not be heard and appreciated by the public.

Faded (56,758)
by enwar00 from usa
| |
|
|
Faded is one of my favorite MC songs of all time. I just love it so much. It somehow hits all the rights spots and makes me feel good. Like relaxed. Sometimes I play it over and over and don't even get sick of it. Like right now. I literally woke up a half hour ago and haven't gotten out of bed yet and it was the first thing that popped in my head, and I guess I'm feeling what's in the song. I just tried bringing something back to life recently but I think I was defeated once and for all. Thought I'd share about the song, sorry if it was tmi.

5 Questions to MC (56,757)
by Musti from UK
| |
|
|
1) During your earlier years before you branched out to do "your own thing", did you practice opera with your mom and if so were there any arias or lieder in particular you enjoyed singing? 2) What secret of Eminem are you referring to in Clown? 3) What did really go down between you and Lauryn Hill so that Crystal Ball was never recorded? 4) Will you ever release all those songs you've recorded which never made it to any of your albums? 5) Do you have a target age after which you'd like to retire from singing?

Bad Blood: The hijacking of The Elusive Chanteuse (56,756)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
So I'm online, minding Mariah's business, right? And what do I come across but some broadband moron hijacking The Elusive Chanteuse moniker for their own, often times, lesser fave? I wouldn't have made much of it except it wasn't the first time I'd seen it and not even the same performer. But I'm nothing if not a faux scientist so of course I set out to prove myself wrong. I think you all know where this is going but long story short I found not one, not two, but countless instances of bloggers, "journalists", random posters etc misappropriating "The Elusive Chanteuse" phrase to: in no particular order; JLo (in Spanish), Nelly Furtado, Rihanna and Janet Jackson (real? and true?), Lana Del Rey, Jennifer Hudson, Britney, Alanis Morisette, Jennifer Lawrence, Beyonce and Sia (both many several times over), Ariana Grande (in Portuguese no less), Taylor Swift, Leona Lewis, Vonda Shepard, Nicki Minaj, Xtina, Estelle, Leighton Meester, Madonna, even RuPaul and Buffy The Vampire Slayer were like: Bitch, don't forget about us, we're elusive chanteuses too. Hollah. I didn't even include some singers and actresses (WTF) because I hadn't even ever heard of them before. It's so irksome that one troll couldn't even use the masculine form (chanteur) for MJ in their hurry to dilute Mariah's newest alias. Why do people do this? I thought MIAMTEC was a flop album, yet here goes literally everybody you can Google being called the elusive chanteuse. Wasn't the album title mocked to high heavens and Mariah lambasted for it? Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse is part of MC's legacy as much as Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly is but it would have been The Art Of Letting Go if some idiot goat hadn't leaked it. In the end it didn't matter one way or another because shameless people are determined to steal from Mariah in broad daylight even her signature idiosyncratic song and album titles. Why is Mariah's hard work and intellectual properties seen as communal wealth and whose camps are behind the charge? That is a rhetorical question BTW. My 2ยข.

What a great post. I remember back in 1995 when the Fantasy remix came out just how left field it was at the time. This was (caps) Mariah Carey (end caps) with Ol' Dirty Bastard. A literal "WTF" moment from everybody. This was the girl who we witnesses running through fields in jean shorts and flannel shirts and wearing long elegant evening gowns whilst singing about heroes and dream lovers. It came completely out of nowhere, and it was brilliant. It is single handedly the most important recording she has ever made.

The Lambily Meeting on YouTube (56,753)

Here's a link to the first episode of The Lambily Meeting. You kind of have to be obsessed with Mariah to spend an hour listening to these two lambs "lamb out" and talk all things Mariah. These guys are funny and know everything about Mariah. Like Wendy's saying goes, they're like friends in my head. In episode 5 that's on iTunes, they have a special guest who was an insider at Mariah's 1993 wedding to Tommy. So yeah these boys chat it up, gossip, and even some funny shade with all things related to Mariah.

It's crazy that you say that you wouldn't ask sycophantic questions when that is exactly what you do when you write your posts. You are the 8th grade kid that sits in the back of the class and hollers out ridiculous comments to get the whole class to chuckle in a desperate attempt for attention. You reply to Mimi L was condescending, but I'm sure you will get 20 likes because that is your ultimate gain. She called you out for making an off colored comment that you disguised as a joke. A joke is just a way to for you to say these disrespectful comments and then claim you are leaving the board when people call you out. I find this funny as you are quick to call people delusional. You then equate "ghetto" with poor quality in regards to Infinity. The song is just bad, period. Shake It Off and ILT used slang and they both charted well here in the States. Mariah was never the "white Whitney" that Tommy made her out to be and airbrushed her to perfection for people like you to be able to relate to. I believe your frustrations come from you being able to relate to her less and less with each year. She's black.

I agree, B about feeling like an outsider. Growing up I felt like an outcast. It was Mariah's music and Mariah herself that gave so much comfort. The connection so strong in many songs like "Close my eyes" etc felt as though they were specifically for me.

My 5 questions for Mariah (56,750)
by Giovanni from USA
| |
|
|
1. Who in your opinion is the best female singer of all time? (I doubt she'd answer it.) 2. If you could go back in time to experience any era in history, which would you pick? 3. Is there anything different you'd like to try in music that you haven't done? 4. "Me I am Mariah" is a great album, what were your expectations of it? Did you think it was going to do better? 5. Last, Ariana Grande. What do you think of her? After I'd tell Mariah thank you for her music and talent. And if she could give us another amazing era.

So soon to make a reply. I will back off once more, as I don't want to a self-righteous (don't argue) voice of this board. I've backed off before and I love looking at the posts of those who never really posted here. I would really like to encourage those who don't post, or who click "likes" here to post their opinions. I think some of us dominate. Let's let debate happen between those who visit but don't post. I think more people should join in the debate and I think their voices should be heard. Let's hear them. If you haven't posted here before, but read it, post, post, post. Post your thoughts and feelings, and don't be afraid to do so. And perhaps the regular posters (I absolutely mean myself) should take a short step back. Many people love Mariah and visit this site. I think it would be great to let them opine. We all love each other for loving Mariah, hopefully. Let's let the newbies show their love and voice their opinions? We need new voices. I'm bored of my own.

I enjoyed reading this both for your humor, and for your transparency. Like you, I don't think there is a question I could pose, that wouldn't somehow seem small. If I could spend time with Mariah, I would thank her for her music, and give her a glimpse into the ways, her voice, her albums, and her outlook lifted me through some of my darkest times, made me feel like someone truly understands. Not only that, but given some of my deepest feelings and inspirations a voice. You're posting style actually reminds me a lot of Edward's in terms of frankness, humor and exaggeration. I would never say I idolize Mariah either. She's someone I love and respect. She's someone who has influenced and inspired me throughout my life, but we all make mistakes and miss the mark. There should be room for everybody to be heard here.

Thank you for your response Andrew and I appreciate it. I think I hardly ever call you out but I did feel like writing to ask if that is really the way you wanted to question her. I might have misunderstood your post and for that I apologize. I usually try not to tell people how to behave around or feel about Mariah (I do have opinions, but those are just that). Lord knows I have been called "delusional lamb" and "hater goat" on this same board. I am definitely not one to think Mariah is flawless or blameless in everything. She is human and like everyone else she has her flaws and I call her out when I think she is at fault and then face a lot of hate too lol. I would like to explain that when I wrote "used to" it wasn't to insult you or question your devotion, I just sometimes write like that to cover both sides so that I don't have to write another post in case the person I am writing to gives the "other scenario". I know I am probably not making sense, but everything aside. I didn't mean to insult you or anyone by that post. I also didn't mean to come off like I am questioning your love for Mariah's music, because I did tell you before that I believe you do love her contrary to what people may think by your posts. I feel bad after reading the post you wrote and how you feel about her so yet again, I am sorry. Your posts directed at me has always been respectable and for that I am grateful, and so I have always tried to be respectable towards you. So yes, no hard feelings I hope.

Mimi L (56,744)
by Andrew from UK

Mimi L, I'm sorry I missed your post. The post was clearly tongue-in-cheek (partly). I don't feel the need to write 5 extremely sycophantic questions. But, let's give it a go: 1. Do you know how amazing you are? I mean, I think you're amazing, and I love you. But do, like, you know how, like, amazing you are? Please don't think I don't think you're amazing. Or I'll scream and scream until I'm sick. 2. You are a legend. You are the legendest of the legendests. You are the legendest of the legendests of the legendests. O. Mariah. How does it feel to be a legend? 3. I love everything about you. Was there ever a time when you didn't think I loved everything about you? 4. Mariah, your hair is amazing. Can I eat some of it? 5. Will you come to my birthday party? There'll be cake. I will guess that those questions got censored. And perhaps most of this post. However: On a serious note, Mimi L, I don't often respond to people but you can't have thought I would actually ask Mariah those questions. Grandstanding aside. You're "used to" comment is off the mark. I have a different style, different approach and different reality, I suppose. Holier-than-thou comments on this board concerning my posts from people who would rather die than accept and explore Mariah's "faults" (for definite want of a better word) are quite redundant. But I do have some respect for you, actually. So, no, I wouldn't ask her those 5 questions. If I ever met Mariah for that space of time and had a chance for her to hear my voice, I wouldn't waste my time with asking 5 questions designed to make me look like the perfect lamb or kiss her ass. I would use that short time to tell her that, when I was growing up (I am a grown up, I promise you) her music, nay the sound, tone, power, subtlety and resonance of her voice in my earphones at night comforted my soul, and made any hurt and pain go away when I was sad. I would tell her that her upbeat songs made me feel as if the world was inconsequential because I was in ecstasy dancing somewhere in the stratosphere and nothing and nobody mattered for those three to four minutes because she and I couldn't be reached. And I would apologise for becoming so cynical in later life, and being so critical of her, but that I have to choose to put everything in a healthy context, and see her as a music artist (and a mortal, flawed human being) albeit an important one in my life, and, above all things, I want her to be a fucking good one again. I would finish (whilst probably running out of time, and being ushered on, by this point) by saying that, whilst I don't idolise anybody as I don't think it healthy, I love her and will always love her for her contribution to my life and for giving me the insight when I was young, that somewhere on the planet there were people with deep and meaningful souls for whom love, empowerment and beauty were the keystones of life, even if they were not the people around me. And I would tell her that, at the end of my life, after I have said goodbye to all those I have known and loved, I will have her in my heart, for what her voice and music have meant to my life, and know that she will sing me to eternal sleep when the time comes. "Used to"? We don't have cents here in the UK. So that's my 2 pence. Stay well.

LC I agree with your post, Mariah never was and still isn't given enough credit. I would like to add to the part about the Christmas album, you might already know this but still I wanted to add that at the time Mariah made that album, she said she didn't want to do it. That is because she thought it was something people do around the end of their careers not 3 years into their career. But she later agreed and now it has become a staple, so that adds to your post about how people just assume that young artists making a Christmas album is common whereas the queen of Christmas herself was hesitant when making hers because before her, it wasn't such a common practice. She made it popular, she made it look like a profitable venture that if one manages to nail a good holiday anthem, they can live off its royalty for years (unfortunately people were not successful in replicating the success). Now everyone seems to have a Christmas album or EP even before they make it big like Ariana has one, Justin Bieber, Demi, and a lot more I don't even know the names of. It does sadden me that no matter what Mariah does, people always dutifully forget to give her any credit or praise her for it. They just think of her as the big voiced diva when she is so much more than that. Her voice is only one of her many talents/contributions.

Written for Mariah (56,742)

Today I was thinking it would be a nice idea if Mariah did an album with songs other artists have written for her to sing, like from really good popular songwriters, she could get more number ones. We all know she can write a song but it would be nice for a change if she let some people write songs for her.

Mariah's impact (56,741)
by LC from USA
| |
|
|
I was thinking about this the other day and it just astounds me. Mariah's impact is literally omnipresent and so ubiquitous that people don't even know that today's music is the way it is because of her. There was a lamb on Twitter who solidified my point by saying something along the lines of "Mariah has such a great impact that people think this is how music always was." And now looking back, that is the complete truth. This 20 year old "trend" of blending hip hop and pop is now just the standard of music. Even to this day, the biggest songs on the charts are songs like "See You Again" and "Dark Horse" and so many more that blend rap and pop music. But while lambs and critics are aware of Fantasy's influence, Mariah isn't really given the credit by the public because the blend just seems so natural now that it seems like music has always been this way. Then there's her style of singing, which are those pretty little intricate runs and then the big voice and high notes that are the standard for which singing is judged today. She made that mainstream so that to this day, the big new "vocalists" of this generation like Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, Jessie J, even Justin Bieber have cited her as their main influences in how they sing. And also now every mainstream pop singer makes Christmas music in an attempt to replicate the success of Merry Christmas. Yet people assume that making a Christmas album as a young pop star is just the standard thing to do. Mariah really is the blueprint for today's music and it just baffles me when I think about it because the scope of her impact is so boundless and universal that people can't even trace it back to an origin because it feels like that's how music always was. That's real impact, in my opinion.
