How about those Packers? (54,734)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
So, according to TMZ Mariah's new boyfriend is billionaire James Packer, wingmanned by Brett Rather no less. Well, I hope she does her research this go around but I'm really glad she is already dating and not wasting her best years languishing. I want her to allow more than one suitor before she settles on one guy though. I hope whomever she falls for is a genuinely good guy above anything, honest and trustworthy and emotionally mature enough for real love. God bless.

1. If it's over (SNL) - Wow, her husky tone and the growls. 2. Vision of Love (Arsenio Hall, wearing red dress) - She performed this song twice at this show. I kept repeating this one when I discovered last year. It blew my mind. 3. Anytime You Need a Friend (C&C remix) - Like Norman said, those scats. 4. Without you - It's a very emotional performance. Her rendition makes me cry. She sings like she feels every note of the song. 5. Infinity (Kelly and Michael) - The performance was spot on and the high notes at the end are angelic. I don't think I've heard that high tone from her. By the way, I love her remixes, regular and club. I listen to the club remixes at the gym. The one that gets me going the most is the Honey club remix. I like how she uses different vocal techniques. Her vocals sound so lively and are rich. I feel like I'm at a gay club and having the time of my life.

Mariah, a piano and the divine spirit, I'm saying, why go over the Brooklyn bridge for water? (54,730)

1. Vanishing 2. Underneath The Stars 3. Melt Away 4. It's A Wrap
Why are there only 4 songs released in Mariah's prolific 25 year discography where she is credited the sole writer or producer? We know she now regrets giving some collaborators credit as songwriters when she really wrote the vast majority of the melody, lyrics and basic songstructure. I'm a huge MJ fan and so I've heard his demos for songs like Billion Jean [sic] that he recorded on tapes and just by beatboxing and singing he would lay out an entire song acapella. That's how come he is credited as sole songwriter and only shares production credits with Quincy. No one can tell me Mariah isn't on par with MJ who also wasn't a trained piano player and didn't read music. So, why was/is still Mariah made to share writing credit as a rule rather than as the exception? Diane Warren is another songwriter who still uses cassette tapes to demo her song ideas and then let's an in-house employee tweak and polish them. I wish Mariah would finally get it through her head that she doesn't have to give credit every single time someone adds a note. That's what remixers are for. Write the songs on your own, like MJ or Diane Warren, register it as is. Get an in-house demo producer whose sole purpose is to tune and tweak your songs like Peter Saarsgard does for RealSongs. If you end up using his/hers musical ideas/input and feel generous then credit them as producer, like on Dreamlover. You owe it to yourself MC. Truth.

Top vocal moments (54,729)

Awesome topic Stacey. And I'm loving the vibe of the board this week. Who knew lists could make the difference? These are what come to mind. *Without You. I will never forget the first time I heard this song, listening to the Music Box album at night the day it came out. I had never heard anything like it, those vocals on the first chorus. I couldn't believe my ears. It was as if it was otherworldly. I probably cried. *O Holy Night. Someone said God must have been in the room while she recorded this. What a fantastic and spot on description, I agree. So moving. *Butterfly. So pretty and vulnerable. Such a unique melody. I wish I could hear it for the first time again. One of a kind. Not even Mariah can replicate this anymore. *Emotions. Such a showcase. Such power. This is a vocal performance. *Lead The Way. Absolutely stunning. There's something about those verses, they pierce right through me, I just can't even sometimes. So emotional. I think I cry every other time I hear this song. And that's before her crazy runs and vocals towards the end of the song. *O little Town of Bethlehem/Little Drummer Boy. There's something magical about the MCIIY album, I believe because of the pregnancy and all the love flowing through her at the time, and I especially feel it come through this song.

Every Time I Close My Eyes (54,728)
by Bill from the UK

Yep I agree, this is a great song. I do believe Mariah's involvement was a "returning the favour" gesture. I'm sure either Babyface or MC said something about that once. Her background vocals are just impeccable. She completely makes that song what it is and just elevates it up a level. I also agree that R&B in the 90s was just untouchable. Those of us around back then didn't know how good we had it.

Aww. Such a nice and pretty and chill song with so many memories. Thank you for bringing it into my consciousness, I'll have to listen to it now. Yes, the 90s were magnificent, and they still have a huge piece of my heart. I can't even describe the feeling when I think back on the nostalgia sometimes. Heaven. I think that's what it was.

I don't really know much about how this song came into existence, but don't you just wish this was just a proper duet between Mariah and Babyface? I think that maybe it was friendly way of Mariah returning the favor for his contributions in her albums. It's on Babyface's album, but if it were a duet, then it could've easily fit in Daydream or Butterfly. That said, isn't this song just so dreamy? It's a classic Babyface production, and his voice just melds very well with Mariah's background vocals. Had this been an official duet, it would've charted higher, maybe even to #1 considering Mariah's dominance in the 90's. It's a prime example of just how smooth 90's slow jams are and how great R&B was at its peak.

Stacey challenge (54,724)
by Norman from USA
| |
|
|
Hey there Stacey, you made it a little difficult by keeping the holiday songs off limits for this challenge, because it's like she was born to sing that holiday staple. And I don't mean the one she wrote, which is, of course, amazing. OK. Top 5 lyrics: 1. Underneath The Stars 2. The Roof 3. Looking In 4. Side Effects 5. Betcha Gon' Know Top 5 vocals: 1. Anytime You Need a Friend (C&C remix) - I mean, this is just epic in every single way. She freestyle scats on this thing (exclamation point) Seriously. 2. Never Forget You - One of two Babyface collaborations. 3. So Blessed - She has such a rich tone in this. 4. I Am Free - An elegant piano driven gospel inspired song with light pop flourishes. She soars and takes you with her - goosebumps and all. 5. Butterfly (SNL) - I was really tempted to leave this in the songwriting category, but I think it's just as equally powerful with the vocals, especially in this live performance. It's pretty much all falsetto, you know? Talk about level of difficultly. These are all in random order, btw. This list would deffo change if the #1's and the holiday songs could be included, but I guess this makes it more fun. Cheers.

Hardest song (54,723)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
Even though vocally some of Mariah's songs like [...] and [...] and [...] are harder. I would say for live vocals VOL is the hardest. Even though she has given many amazing performances, that is the only song that for some reason to me she could never reproduce singing live and sounding as powerful and haunting if you will as the CD version. Even with the growls during her debut and [...] era and the extra runs she added to the song during the [...] era, nothing beats poping in that tape or CD or vinyl or iPod and listening to that song. Does anyone agree with me, or am I the only one that feel that way? As for the top 5 lyrical songs: 5. Butterfly 4. Petals 3. Melt away (if any women could sing this to me and sound the way Mariah did, I would be on my knees proposing marriage) 2. LTT simple yet pure and honest. 1. The roof If you could see bliss that's what that song and video could be. The song draws you in and makes you feel like you are apart of everything that's going on. Even if you can only understand Mariah through half of the song lol. Got to love the breathy vocals.

Janet snippet / Lee TS / Mariah and Babyface (54,721)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Yeah, when I first heard it, I was like, this is almost exactly the same opening cascading keyboard intro of Mariah's Yours. It makes sense, as Jimmy & Terry produced that song, and as we all know, they've been with Janet from Control to 20 Y.O. So I guess this means Jan's back with the producers she really belongs with. Mariah kinda has this scorched-earth-policy she follows in both her personal and professional life, so I guess it's unlikely for her to get back together with Walter. So if we won't get that, then maybe Babyface would be more likely. His production style has this signature soft, plush 90's sound (best heard in the gorgeous Melt Away and Madonna's epic Take A Bow) which would be a nice contrast to Mariah's grittier, huskier tone. Please, Mariah, just for the nostalgia, even if it was just for one song.

It's Bianca bitches, and don't call it a comeback neither (54,720)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End

This is Mariah's message: "Does the ?lambily? miss Bianca? I think her comeback is due.?" Yes a thousand 8. Yes. Bianca's return is imminent and I am too psyched to play it cool. *screaming and squeeing on the inside on account of it being almost midnight and I'm not that type of neighbour* Whatever, I don't care that I'm not making sense. I wonder if Bianca's gonna make her appearance on Game Of War because that's what I've between wishing on the low since Friday whenever that broke. I'm telling you, it's like I have ESPN or something. But I don't wanna be greedy, let Bianca reemerge in whatever incarnation just as long as she shows up. So how do you guys think it's gonna happen? Thanks for hearing the incessant Bianca campaign MiMi, can't nobody say you ain't a good listener.

Interesting topic. My top 5 vocals: 1. If it's over 2. Jesus what a wonderful child 3. You're so cold 4. Forever 5. Anytime you need a friend Lyrics 1. The roof 2. Close my eyes 3. Vision of love 4. Underneath the stars 5. Butterfly In other news, how sweet and kind of Mariah to give a front row ticket to that kid with cancer. I hope people give her more credit, appreciate her, and stop telling her to grow up. If someone tells me that, I would be insulted. We don't really know for sure what happened between her and Walter. She made her decision a long time ago it seems. Deal with it, move on, and let's all grow up.

Stacey challange (54,712)
by Warrior Butterfly from USA

I tried to pick songs that are not part of the 18 pack or automatically identified with Mariah. Vocals: 01. Vanishing - Does not have to use whistle to sound amazing. 02. Long ago - Started to give hints of what was to come having a more Urban sound 03. The beautiful ones - She kept up with Drew Hill they are completely different but man she went for it, stayed low-mid range. 04. After tonight - Towards the end it sounds like does a duet with herself. 05. Subtle invitation - Around the 3:10 "if you really need me baby [...]". Writing: 01. Alone in love - The longing for your lover to love you is captured. 02. Twister - Mourning and deep loss for someone that was truly special but wishing them peace. 03. Till the end of time - The original infinity, they share similar theme except this is less cheecky. 04. Cry. - "I should have known that you were trying to love me" trying to figure out the love your already in. 05. Supernatural - Ignoring Dem Babies being woven in and out it reads very sweetly, Underneath The Stars for 2014.

Secret album (54,709)
by Giovanni from USA
| |
|
|
I think it'd be cool if Mariah dropped a secret album sometime this year. She surely has to have enough tracks by now. And even though I'd like something different I really would just want some new music. "Me I am Mariah" is a great album, but I want more. (Does that make me selfish?) I thought for her 25 years in the business she was going to release an album full of unreleased songs. From her debut all the way until now. More than anything I'd like to hear material from 1990. "Weakness of the body" was such a waste and missed opportunity.
