MIAMTEC (46,023)

MIAMTEC is a great album. If the album had been released when #Beautiful was at its peak this album would have sold better. The album proves Mariah can still make timeless music. I think Money would fit in nicely on the radio at the moment. Problem and that Jason Derulo song both have blaring horns in the chorus just like Money. And the silly yet catchy chorus is brilliant.

Mariah may get to perform in Taipei after all. I just read an article that said Celine Dion postpones Las Vegas residency and cancels tour in Asia due to husband Rene Angelil's health issues.

A day with Mariah (46,020)
by b3nP123 from United States

I would admire her and listen to every album of hers with her. Then I'd ask her if she could give me voice lessons. Then I'd show some of the songs I've written and record them and have her teach me to produce music. Then we'd release the music and I'd be extra happy. I would move across the country to be her protege. And even though I'm a guy I still wanna be able to but high notes.

Ariana Grande (46,019)
by Otti from Belgium

I'm new here and I have to say something about new kid on the block Ariana Grande. It's not the first time that new female artists who can sing and look sexy and beautiful have been compared to Mariah. Remember Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez (ok, she can't sing, sexy looks) in the nineties? And there was Mariah with 2 more number one hits (Heartbreaker and TGIFY), and then once again in 2008 with Leoana Lewis was named as the new Mariah. In that same periode Touch My Body became Mariah's 18 number one on the Billboard, and E=MC2 became the highest first-week sales of Carey's career. Although Ariana is a copycat to the fullest, her hair is like Mariah in the Honey video.

Mariah / Ariana (46,018)
by Edward from USA

I actually like Ariana's album "You're Truly". So far the music for this new album is fun, but too bubble gum for me to revisit in the future. I have noticed that they are bombarding us with Ariana's music from every angle: "Problem", "Break Free", "Bang Bang", and now "Best Mistake", all of them are in the iTunes top 20. They have realized that you have to ride on the success of the previous single before it completely deflates. I know that one day people will be back to appreciating albums again. This is not the first time singles have been cannibalizing albums sales, but it is going to be way more difficult because now with the internet you just buy the songs you like and that's it, before we had to swallow a whole album just for a few good songs. Mariah, since the beginning, has put out albums that can be listened to from beginning to end, and that's something just few artist can be accredited for.

A day with Mariah (46,017)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
If I had the privilege of spending the day with Mariah, I'd spend the day telling her how much I admire her, what an inspiration she's been, what I love about her music, how she seems like such a wonderful mother, how I'm jealous of Nick, and ask her about songs she left off the albums over the years and just hang out with her. I wouldn't have the gall to comment on her clothes or attitude etc as she is beautiful and just being with her for a day would be a dream come true.

What would you do? (46,016)
by Gilbert from USA
| |
|
|
If you can spend the day with Mariah, well maybe 2-3 days, and you can manage Mariah, what would you make different? 1. I'd have some suggestion about the wardrobe, if she can't walk in it, she shouldn't wear it. I'd prefer something sexy but not trashy. 2. I'd make an adjustment on the songs she has been singing live. I'd suggest singing songs that she hasn't done in awhile. You can only hear Touch My Body, Obsessed, Always Be My Baby, etc so many times before you're thinking again with this song. 3. I'd promote her more. Billboards etc. However, I'd feel we would have to meet half way as far as videos go and the singles that are being released. I'd think it would be okay to say no, I don't always have to agree with what Mariah wants but agree to what's the best option for her to get more sales.

Never Too Far / Lead The Way (46,014)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
I love it when other fans single out random songs from Mariah's catalogue and post about their fascination for them in detail. I recently have been playing 2 of my fave Glitter ballads back-to-back a lot: Never Too Far and Lead The Way. I mean Twister's one of the most hauntingly beautiful things I've ever heard and Reflections almost always makes me teary-eyed, but it's those 2 that really transport me. NTF is a great uplifting ballad that perfectly punctuated the Glitter film. It's simply enchanting. The soaring melody of the chorus embodies its hopeful message of finding the good in a loss, even if it's possible only by reminiscing. It may have been a flop in most major music markets, but it was a hit in my country. LTW, on the other hand, contains one of Mariah's most impressive vocal performances ever. It spends half of its running time gradually building up until it reaches the bridge where she gears up for one of the most breathtaking climaxes of Mariah ballads. After a gorgeous intrumental break she finally unleashes herself on the final chorus when she goes off on the "take over" bit (up there with Can't Take That Away as one of the most complex runs I've ever heard) that's legit chill-inducing stuff right there. I think it's overall a stronger composition than NTF, but wasn't a single probably because it lacked an immediately discernible hook. Still, both power ballads are just gold and makes me hope for Mariah to work with Walter, and Jimmy and Terry again.

Seemingly out of rhythm or whatever (46,011)
by Lainsky from Philippines
| |
|
|
It's A Wrap and Betcha Gon' Know are seemingly out of rhythm, melody or context from the tracks of MIAMTEC. Well it's just my opinion. It could have ended with Heavenly and then bonus tracks are the remixes of Thirsty, YME and YDKWTD. Then I inserted Triumphant (No Rap) before Cry and it fits I guess. Just happy with the album but still can't believe no video or promotions for YDWTD and Meteorite. And she's coming to Manila. Great.

Mimi L. / comparisons (46,009)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Yeah, I also enjoy listening to Problem and Break Free as well as her entire debut album. And yes, it's nice that she's starting to deviate from Mimi's sound. Truth is that her songs stand out of today's mostly frustrating music scene. It somehow reminds me of how Mariah's songs also managed to tower over a lot of the other songs in the 90s and 00s (although it was more impressive as there was far better material on the radio back then). It's funny how some seem to be deathly allergic to comparisons between Mimi and other artists. I, for one, don't mind it. I may not always agree, but I won't switch into all out defensive mode, because I'm confident that Mariah's always gonna hold her own against them. Comparisons in the music industry are inevitable, and any new big-voiced octave-scaling artists that will pop out in the future will almost certainly be compared to Mariah. Besides, when have the supposed "protégés" ever shone brighter than their mentors/idols? Madonna's still bigger than Britney or GaGa. Neither Justin nor Usher will ever reach the heights of Michael's career. If we stay pressed about who the next "wannabe" will be and how she will measure up, we're all gonna drive ourselves crazy. If anything, it would only make us seem insecure as fans, which would be ironic since Mariah's catalogue is nothing to be insecure about. I don't sweat comparisons at all because at the end of the day, they're exactly just that and only that. They won't diminish any accomplishment Mimi has done throughout her illustrious career. If anything, like I posted before, these comparisons will only benefit her, as young fans of the artists she is compared to could discover her discography out of curiosity. It keeps her in the news. I don't mean to be gauche, but let's just relax and enjoy the free (inadvertent) publicity. And if Mimi does decide to collaborate with Ari, not only would it portray Mariah as a secure artist; it would also introduce her to a newer, younger audience. It'd be a smart deal on all accounts, as iTunes and Vevo prove Ariana can do no wrong nowadays. Other than Beyoncé, Christina, MJB or Adele (highly unlikely), she's the only other big-voiced artist in the game I can imagine Mariah singing with. She'd also benefit from it, what with being able to duet with a legend on her resume. It's a win-win deal, a hit waiting to happen. Plus, "Mimi plus Ari" would look good on the single cover. Wishful thinking.

MOAIA / Everytime (46,008)
by NYHotShotta from USA
| |
|
|
I think that Everytime demo from Glitter isn't Mariah but it sounds like her and for Memoirs I think that album could have been way better had she worked only with JD and Bryan Michael Cox instead of the Dream and Tricky Stewart. The Dream has his signature sound that could be heard through all the songs, there's no variety like with MIAMTEC.

In defense of some MIAMTEC tracks (46,007)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
I've noticed several songs off MIAMTEC that seem to get quite the cold shoulder on this board. That's fine, no one can argue with personal preference. I agree with some of them, but I try to focus on the good. 1) Money ($*/...) may sound more like a track that features Mariah than a Mariah song, but there's no denying that behind the cheesiness, dem horns are (for better or worse) pretty catchy, especially when Mariah mimics their monotonous tune in the end. 2) Thirsty may be deemed a bit too "street" and derivative, but that "Mariah choir"-chorus just cuts through the repetitive minimalist production like hot knife through butter. 3) You're Mine (Eternal) may be criticized for sounding dated or indistinct, but it has a certain ethereal feel that in only present in a few other Mariah songs, and she really has saved the best note for last. 4) One More Try may lack the raw, earnest emotional resonance that made the George Michael original such a hit, but it does make up for it in terms of appropriate restraint that comes across as homage to that version, as opposed to trying to top it. 5) Meteorite may be seen as cheap by some, but it still sounds opulent and smart for a dance track in 2014 thanks to a wisely used sample. 6) Supernatural may border on saccharine and have way too many giggles in it, but it holds some of Mariah's most impressive belting since TEOM.

Missed opportunity with Ariana Grande (46,005)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
Since we're back on the Ariana topic is like to say that Mariah missed a huge opportunity with Ariana. I understand we're both of the. Are coming from. Mariah is a legend and is being told that some new girl that doesn't even have a #1 single is replacing her. Ariana is a new singer that finds inspiration in Mariah so her music is bound to be reminiscent of Mariah. I think they could've had a Brandy Whitney thing had Mariah not felt threatened by Ariana. They could've worked together later in Ariana's career and Mariah could've mentored her. But that won't happen because Mariah doesn't know who she is.

I was initially one of those people hating Ariana because she was trying too hard to be the new Mariah, so much so that her songs could be mistaken for Mariah songs. (I am in no way saying the vocals are of same level, just saying the usual whistles the oohs and and touches that Mariah puts in her songs were copied to the max.) However I will agree she is the most deserving of success out of all the other "singers" currently dominating the charts. She has a good voice, something we can't say of the majority of people currently popular. I am glad to see that for her second album, Ariana's songs are very different from that of Mariah's. I enjoyed both Break Free and Problem.

Terna (46,002)
by Bill from the UK

Lol, that was a fun post but you can kind of say that about any number if you work hard enough. Three is her lucky number because her third studio album, released in 1993 at the age of 23 was her biggest ever and its third single (Without You) was the song which finally broke her internationally (on a large chart topping scale). Three years later she embarked on what many consider to be her best tour during her vocal peak (Daydream, I was there at Wembley Arena in London squealing with excitement at the time). Also several of her lead off singles had three syllables (Emotions, I'll Be There, Dreamlover, Fantasy, Heartbreaker, Loverboy, Through the Rain, It's Like That, Beautiful). So there we have it. Coincidence?

Re: Webmaster albumsales worldwide (46,001)
by MimiLamb from Germany
| |
|
|
The USA sales are wrong. In the early 90s, not all companies used Soundscan (which started in 1991) such as Walmart (where Mariah sold the majority of her albums) so though they scanned 7.2 million for Music Box, they've in fact sold well over 10/11 million. As for worldwide sales, the rest of the world doesn't use Soundscan so it's impossible to really know what Mariah has sold, but it's definitely around 200 million since Music Box, Daydream, Number 1s and Merry Christmas sold 100 million alone.

People who hate on Mariah (46,000)
by b3nP123 from United States

They're so stupid. They say her newer albums are all flops. But the purpose of her newer albums haven't necessarily been to be extremely commercially successful, but to cater to the fans who love her so much. She's reached the point in her career with two diamond albums and being worth half a billion dollars where she doesn't really need the albums to be smashes like TEOM, Daydream, or Music Box. People think that anything that doesn't spawn as many number ones as she did in her early career is a failure but that just simply isn't the case. She's just chilling and living her life with her new kids like.

Not "over 200 million albums" (45,999)
by Joyce from USA
| |
|
|
Maybe, I think what they meant to say was units sold? There were maxi-singles sales that had various remixes and B sides that also sold millions. It's nice too look at them all in the discography. Back in the 90's not only did you look forward to the albums, but the cover art of the cassette tapes/CD's. My favorites were the "Anytime you need a friend remixes", "My all/Stay a while remix" and "Heartbreaker remix" where she sings "Cuase you know how we make each other feel, don't go and break my heart. So why don't you come on bay-bah, we shouldn't be apart." I loved it. Oh, the 90's. Mariah was vocal super-hero leaping and flying in a leauge of her own.
