Billy / Jazz Mariah (47,121) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
I agree with you with Mariah venturing more into jazz, especially considering her current vocal condition. It has adapted a more mature, smokier, more buttery tone that would probably fit the genre more than R&B. Belting isn't her vocal sweet spot anymore. It's her falsetto. Listen to Christmas Time Is In The Air Again, Charlie Brown Christmas, and When Do The Bells Ring For Me and you'll notice her voice naturally fits jazz than it does forced against a modern R&B track like You're Mine or Supernatural. Belting is much less needed in jazz. I truly believe that at a good day, she'll be able to sing Fourth Of July, Underneath The Stars and The Wind better with her current voice than she ever could in the 90s, just because of that tone. It's as if she sounds more 'expensive' now than she did back then when she mostly just sounded impressive. If she doesn't do jazz, then more traditional or throwback R&B is another natural fit, as evinced by Mine Again, Circles, IWYK, Your Girl, IAW, WCC, YDKWTD, TAOLG, #B, and MILG. Either way she goes in the future, she may no longer set the charts on fire, but at least it would make for better, age appropriate music that she could replicate more easily in live performances.

Too much? (47,120) by Darryle from USA
I think this tour might be too much for Mariah right now. With the tour, the divorce, the twins, and the media it seems like it would be a lot to handle. Maybe Mariah should just take a break and get away from the lime light and enjoy being a mom maybe work on her voice. Just relax and let things cool down for a bit and get her life together. This tour could be Mariah's way of getting away from it all. She'd be away from direct media scrutiny, she wouldn't deal with the divorce. She'd get to do what she loves, connect with the fans and sing. At the end of the day I hope Mariah proves me wrong and shows me that she's got this and the tour just started off on the wrong foot.

Jazz (47,119) by Mara from United States
Mariah please do a jazz album. I have said this in many posts here, that her voice is perfect for jazz. That performance of Billie Holiday was incredible. Jazz is just effortless to her, and suits her voice even now 25 years of singing. I think she needs to be given a little slack, she is going though a life changing public divorce. Her life is pulled through the media daily and she obviously feels she can do the tour and it probably is therapeutic to her at the same time. Can we just take a minute and say, she looks amazing right now. She has lost weight and you can see it in her arms and how her face looks. She is so beautiful. I can't believe how the minute she hits the stage and notes are off, the claws come out and the media and people are quick to crucify her. It could have been an off night. I agree that as she goes on she will sound better. Whoever mentioned the Tina Fey Amy P skit was brilliant. That would have been a nice highlight on the tour.

Mariah's current vocal state (47,118) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Okay, how should I put this carefully. Her voice is still there, but it sounds tired, forced, and strained. She just wasn't ready for the show. There are a lot of things going with her life right now. I know there has to be some point that should stop being an excuse, and that having her resources she should be able to do everything in her power (vocal coaching, treatment, if needed) to help restore or at least preserve it, but before we get too critical for the millionth time, let's just take a moment and consider cutting her some slack again (even if it's for the millionth time as well). Mariah Carey is not dumb. She knows that singing has become much more challenging for her now. But since she doesn't talk about her vocal decline for personal reasons, it's harder to know just what's going through her mind about her voice. Whether she's in denial, feeling helpless, or just too scared that public admission of it would ruin her reputation is still anybody's guess. She gets more than enough criticism online already. I know this may sound like blind allegiance, but since this is her voice we're talking about and she's currently on tour, it would be better for every lamb to just keep defending her and hope and pray she gets it together during this crucial period. Plus, it's gotta be worth something that she still went ahead and exposed her voice at that condition for what seems to be most of the night when she easily could've mimed all the way through the entire concert.

Mariah makes me happy (47,117) by Travon..SweetSweetFantasy from USA
I am a true lamb that is so stoked on Mariah Carey that I could be her publicist. Lol. I think her tour setlist is great considering she's performing in much larger stadiums in Asia. People don't pay over $200 to hear 10 songs. I also like that she seems authentic and not divaish this time. We have not heard of her being hours late as we are used to expecting, which is an A+++. She seems very focused. I have been to her twitter and facebook. People who live in those countries are saying she sounded great and there are no negative comments I have seen on her pages. I only see negative comments on public forums and limited tabloids. Less tabloids the better. I always find it interesting that tabloids become hush hush about Mariah when positive things are going her way. I am genuially happy she is single and free. She seems less stressed and more happy. Go Mariah. Hip hip hooray.

Left feeling sad (47,116) by Yu from Japan
I loved the show and tears started dropping a seconds after I saw her on stage yesterday. I was at my seat and still I doubted her appearance because there was no interview or any of that media coverage here in Japan. (I was comforted when I saw her Konnichiwa Tokyo message on her twitter but still there was no "Mariah arrives" news or coverage on TV.) She performed so many songs for us, almost too many for 2 hours. I felt she was in a rush, trying to take care of business. (I can hear her say "What do you want me to do?") I was just honored to be there to see her live, singing for us, I'd be happy even if she was just standing there, talking. But her eyes, the whole time, even with the makeup and you can see that her eyes were looking sad. And she edited him completely out from whatever you see at the show. Even on brochure, you don't see a trace of N. Even their Christmas photo with Santa, he was supposed to be there but no picture of him. And she put that Valentine, candy bra picture there (it was beautiful) but well, no him. You see images of dembabies with their beautiful and gorgeous mommy but no daddy. I thought she might edit "mommy daddy" voice out when she performed Supernatural but fortunately she didn't because she loves every bits of her babies and I love her for being a beautiful and loving mom. It's just too sad to see and know the fact that chapter was ending and going to the show, you'll know that for sure and I guess that's what making me feel extremely sad now.

The voice situation (47,115) by juan from Dubai
If we go back to Daydream Tour, there were some days of the tour where her voice was really not in shape. You can search it on YouTube, I believe it was L.A. She could not reach a high not. But last night, it was terrible. I am heart broken. I definitely want to hear her once in a while but with full healthy voice. She can lip-synch all she want, but when needed, it should be on point. Just like Beyonce's concerts. She lips most of the night but blows everyone when she freestyles. It was not good. ugh. I have high hopes for her. I still have the faith one day she blows everyone again.

Lee / Don't Explain (47,114) by Bill from the UK
Thank you for sharing that video Lee. I thought that was a great performance and an excellent song choice. I've longer for Mariah to do a jazz number ever since hearing The Wind. It just suits the softer side of her voice and the arrangements can let her sing freely when she wants to. Really enjoyed the song, thanks again for sharing it.

The tour (47,113) by Randy from USA
I'm just tired of making excuses. The setlist was too long, she is going through a divorce, she traveled across the world. We are getting too many bad performances from someone who is supposed to be one of the all time greatest vocalists. Since that Oprah performance of Hero in 1997, it has been way too many inconsistencies and no I don't expect her to be perfect but to have a noticeable difference in your voice and never address it directly and keep on with the smoke and mirrors. I remember watching her at that BET performance thinking to myself, why is Mariah Carey lip syncing? Isn't that reserved for JLo, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson? This is Mariah Carey. I think some people love her so much they just hang on to the fact that she's almost on pitch. And call that a great emotional performance. Aretha, Patti, Chaka, Gladys and Tina held on to their voices for decades and even though they have all declined somewhat, there is still some resemblance of their former greatness. So basically, I will be spending the next 6 months defending her on Facebook. I am mortified, yet again.

Where the voice at? (47,112) by JC from UK
Okay I don't usually like jumping on the bandwagon and burning MC alive for her bad performances but, this is a tour. Something she's been "practicing" for for sometime and yet her first show goes like that? I've only listened to little snippets from Instagram but they're mostly WBT and it's just the prerecorded climax used in GMA. I always applaud her for singing "My All" and "Vision of Love" live but man, what happened that night? Tired, jet lagged or whatever, couldn't she fly there a couple days before? I saw a lamb fighting for MC on Instagram saying that as the show went on, her vocals came through and shone. My question is, shouldn't she be vocalising way before the concert? It's a shame that the MC who toured Austalia last year is no where to be found.

Haven't you learned? Never count Mariah out (47,111) by M from UK
Listen, it's bad enough the media have been trying to use Mariah as a punching bag recently. Why are the fans jumping on the bandwagon? Mariah Carey is human. She may be the best selling female artist of all time with unparalleled talent and beauty, but that doesn't mean we can put her on this ridiculously high pedestal all the time. Every singer has a bad day and from what I've seen and heard of the first night in Tokyo it sounded alot better than the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj on a good day when they're on tour. She is going through a massively publicized divorce, preparing for this world tour, we all know she is a brilliant mother to Roc and Roe, and she needs rest in order to be at her vocal best, which she probably isn't getting. But of course no one is concerned about how Mariah is feeling, everyone is just looking for the high notes and jumping on our icon within 2 secs flat. It's only opening night and theirs alot of overrating to how bad this is. Mariah is a survivor time and time again, and I'll support her through it from afar as an admirer always.

Concert: It was okeish (47,110) by May from Denmark
Thanks a lot Will for the link. You are right that she does sound better in that recording. I think is sort of weird she sang pretty well some of the songs and others she had lot of difficulty. It's like her voice/throat just simply didn't want to cooperate, she would try to sing the same note two or three times fast to get in place again and sometimes will clear her throat out from those flares, as when you have a cold. Could she be a bit sick? Her voice cracking all of sudden or just not reaching, etc. reminded me to "The Adventures of Mimi" time. Still for an opening I think it was good, the set list is so long, I was impressed when I saw it. She looked like a doll, beautiful. We will see how the next dates go. I guess the most demanding public is going to be the Filipino. I wish her the very best and I think it was good, it wasn't atrocious as someone said but it wasn't a+mazing. It was good and I think at this point of her career and age, without the use of stupid costumes and stage displays to distract the eyes, that's plausible.

Jazz Mariah (47,109) by Billy from Greece
Jazz is just a natural for her. She is already in the third decade of her career. This is definitely the direction she should pursue more, shall I say, diligently. It fits her voice completely. By the way, she looks beautiful in the pics from the first show.

Why lambily why? (47,108) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
It's just the first night and already people are bashing MC. Look I have posted my share of negative reviews on MC's work so no I am not a "MC can't do no wrong" lamb. But come on give her a break. She performed a 23 song setlist filled with fan favorites and not just chart toppers. This is something we have been wanting for so long for her to step out of her usual set list. Then her stage outfits are more mature and elegant. She looks great and the singing wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be. We have heard low quality recordings. That too of few seconds. After 25 years of singing one can't expect her to sound like she did in her 20s. That's silly. Fans were going crazy as to when she will tour, now that she is touring people are hating on her again. Makes me think this is why she probably lately just stay out of the spotlight because every time she comes out people will start with "she can't sing", "she is fat", "what is she wearing" and the rest. When she lip syncs people get mad, when she sings live, people get mad. What do you want really? It's just one night, who knows what surprises she has planned? She seems to have included cartoon videos for the screen too. Maybe she has a lot planned out. Just let her perform a few more venues. I heard the snippet of the ending of Hero and it gave me chills. I know there are way better versions, but this shows that she can still mesmerize us.

Here we go (47,107) by MimiLamb from Germany
It was the first night and people are already burning her at the stake. Give the woman a break. A setlist of 23 songs, come on when did we ever got a setlist like this? Never. So she lips some parts, so she doesn't sound like she is 20, but you know what? She is giving us what we wanted, a tour with a lot of great songs. I rather see her have some bad moments than a 23 song setlist lipped from start to finish.

Re ZachMc (47,106) by G.G. from USA
Lol at "selfless effort". Mariah is being paid, all caps. She's not doing these concerts for free. If she doesn't step it up with the vocals and stage production I think this might be her last big tour. Her voice is gone, she needs something big going on on the stage around her to distract from her lip synching and bad live vocals. Some lambs don't want to see what's right in front of their faces. The Mariah vocals of the 90's are gone forever. Sad to admit, but true.

Too quick to judge (47,105) by ZachSingsMariah from USA
You all need to hold your horses and cut Mariah some slack. This is the first show of her first tour in 5 years, she's travelled literally across the globe and is probably jet lagged/poorly rested, not to mention she is in the midst of a very public and clearly excruciating divorce. The list of things working against her right now is stacked mile high, yet she is still making the selfless effort to perform for her fans, put on what looked like a very cool and engaging visual display, even sing live (which is something people endlessly beg her to do). So what if she sounds a bit off? It's honestly to be expected of any artist on their opening night, and given her circumstances right now it's truly a miracle that she's up on stage at all. Be patient, she will no doubt find her groove again. Hang in there, MC.

Concert audio (47,104) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
I've listened to a lot of clips and I think she sounds good. No, it isn't like 1990 in every song, but I don't expect that. It isn't nearly as dire either. I've been saying for years I'd love a Gospel and Jazz album and after that Billie Holiday cover, that hasn't changed. Lovely.

I tried to find more YouTube clips and the ones I've found are all 16 seconds and she's talking instead of singing. I'm going to hold my comments until I see and hear more footage. She looks great though and so does the set.

Her performance (47,101) by Anonymous from
Ok so I think she is on something. Guys that is not normal. That's how no singer should sound. Maybe it's the divorce. She sounded like the 90s at the Angels tour. I'm just not understanding.

The point of a concert DVD? So that we can come back and revisit this era. And so the people that couldn't attend one of the actual concerts can be part of the experience too.

The Truth (47,099) by Dove from USA
Maybe you're right, but since she is touring, I think the best thing for me to do as a fan is just be supportive. I'm not a singer so I don't know if she will ever be able to sing like she did in the 90's again. Maybe she can't. For me, if she feels comfortable and happy just giving us her best right now, that's enough for me. I think she has enough control over her career now that if she didn't feel like she was up to touring she wouldn't. She probably welcomes the distraction. The only tour clip I've seen is the Hero one and it sounded good to me. Of course not like the 90's, but still, good enough and it made me feel something.

The setlist is great, who would have thought The Roof and I'm That Chick would make an appearance. So pleased to see Babydoll there as well. My only disappointment is that Make It Look Good didn't show up, but I'm crossing my fingers that she'll change it up and perform it at least once.
