Anthony / Mariah in the U.K. (43,343)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
I agree, but I don't think the UK is really a fan of Mariah's vocal style either. It's the first thing I hear about from non fans, everytime. That and her diva image, the sarcasm of which has gone over everyone's head as she's persisted in the joke thus voiding it's humor as it's all we see. But yeah, it's odd and sad that people like Kylie are heralded as UK greats but Mariah isn't.

For the record (43,341)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
I didn't ever state that I personally dislike the United States not did I "bash" it. G.G. sarcastically responded to my comment by claiming that the U.S. Is the most popular country on the planet as "everybody looks towards it to lead the way, especially on money". This is incorrect and biased and I have a right to respond to that. I don't believe I actually criticised the U.S. Per se, but I did clarify it's position by guiding G.G. towards information that will educate, inform and put things into context. The only place I can see where people might take offence is by my saying that externally, America is not seen as "The Beautiful", and even then offence isn't justified as it's a fact. I can't lie just to please others. To use your comparison Edward, it'd be like Leona releasing "Rule Brittania" as the international bonus track. You'd have every right to question it and highlight how odd it is, stating both political fact and public opinion that Britannia's rule is rather diminished. I wouldn't take it as a "bashing" or criticism because a) it's true and b) I'm an individual. Bringing in your point Anthony, I agree, the politics of the entire G7, including my own country, pretty much disgust me. I lean more towards Bhutans stance on GDP (or GDH we should say) But then I wouldn't respond to something in a cocky and uninformed manner that only goes towards reinforce stereotypes of the country I seek to exult. I love Americans. I love the U.S. I lived there, my family are there. I've been in relationships with Americans, I'm even considering moving back there. There's a lot about it that's incredible. Saying that, I have a right to find it odd and question why Mariah would include a track like "America the beautiful" as an international bonus, and express (using fact and in context of it being international) how this isn't appealing to persons outside the U.S. in a similar way to how Beyonces "Proud to be an American" wasn't. Much love to all U.S citizens, please don't take my comments personally.

Babbathon on Letterman (43,340)
by Danny Braden from Uk
| |
Whoever said they hope Mariah doesn't babble on Letterman well, she did. She babbled a good 8 minutes about her kids punching other kids lol. It was good babble though fun and off the wall which of late she's become more of which isn't a negative thing. At least she's interesting but she does ramble on to the point the original question or comment is lost. Sure it's like a defense mechanism.

Letterman (43,338)
by Paul from Usa
| |
Mariah did an outstanding job. I applaud her for conducting herself. Something is def going on with her weight though. Not that I care. I think she looks good like this, but is it related to the rumored divorce? Or is she working over time? Is it the kids? You always eat more when you have kids. I know Mariah yoyo diets, that's never good either. Anyways what did everyone else think of the interview? I love how Letterman told her to tell everyone to #%..# off when they tell her what to do since she's sold 200 million albums.

Similarities and excitement (43,337)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
For some reason, single performances and incoherent interviews aside, the promotional aspect is era is shaping up to be very reminiscent of that of The Emancipation of Mimi. The cover art employs a similar layout, the title is also explicitly self-referential, and the release date falls within the same quarter of the year. Here's hoping she finally charges into promoting this with the same gusto and drive she had during that glorious era - we're talking relatable TV appearances, coherent radio interviews, spot-on single choices, and creative concept music videos to promote them. It's quite a lot to ask for, but almost 5 years of hard work should not be taken lightly and must not be in vain. Nevertheless, I'm so excited, I don't even care that the album covers are a tad too airbrushed or that the release date has been pushed back yet again, I'm just ready for the music and I know Mariah won't disappoint me in that aspect (like, ever). Commercial and critical success will just be cream and cherries on top.

As a non-American, I disagree with some of the things you said about the global influence of the US. In terms of economy and its reputation for having poor foreign policies, you may be right. But there's no denying that the US plays a major role in influencing modern culture especially in western countries and in every aspect from food, fashion, social media, music and movies to slang/colloquialisms in the English language. Try making your argument again the next time you're posting on facebook, twitter, or instagram or watching a video on YouTube, eating a big mac at a McD's or you're at the movies watching a Disney animation or a Hollywood blockbuster, or when you put on your NY Yankees baseball hat. I agree that putting America The Beautiful on her album is a poor choice, but there's no need to go on an anti-American rant.

Album title (43,335)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
It is quite long, over the top, and even a bit obnoxious, but I think the title is quite fitting considering her place in today's music scene. To a new generation of music lovers (that make up more than half of the current music-buying population) who are practically children and are ever so quick to patronize everything that's young, hip, fresh, and bombastic, Mariah is like an middle-aged aunt- they know and respect her, but don't think she's cool. This title sort of reintroduces her to everyone - calling out all fans she ever had and possibly lost, high-fiving those who still are, and offering a handshake to the new ones she can gain. I love how they also poked fun at the multiple setbacks the album suffered with the "Elusive Chanteuse" part.

Politics, never thought I'd find it here (43,334)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
You can tell a lot about this site by how comfortable people are posting that Japanese and Filipinos "love" America. I have been to both countries and lived in South Korea for over a year. Students of history and politics and literature tend to see America through the legacies of military occupations, bombings and massacres, foreign and trade policies and doctrine of American exceptionalism. Others see America from the perspective of Disneyland and Hollywood. I believe that because Americans has chosen to involve itself unilaterally in the world, no American has the right to expect not to be offended by other people's reactions to American nationalism. Mariah represents African heritage in the United States and in Venezuela. She also represents people of Irish descent. Love and hate for America come from those background so let people say what they want about politics. If it feels too personal then you are taking your nation more seriously than it will ever take you. Love is meant for people, not states. The only reason I ever listen to patriotic songs is because of Mariah and Whitney.

Mariah today is a bombshell in the flesh (43,333)
by Me. I am Carly from USA
| |
I think it is very important to point out what an absolute bombshell Mariah is in person, I saw her briefly today leaving Letterman and even though it breaks my heart to think she might not realize her natural beauty is a miracle, the way she looks in person is so above average, curves and 44 be damned. The first time I saw her was during Butterfly and she is just always an epic beauty.

I am Canadian (43,331)
by Ryan from Canada
| |
First I would like to say that I am proudly Canadian and as an educated mid 30's man, I am in the prime of my career and have some knowledge about the world economy. I can honestly say that Canada does not wait on the US for before we make a move. As a member of the G7 Canada has a fairly strong economy and though there was much reliance on the US economy for many years Canada has managed to outpace the US economy and believe it or not but much of Canada did not feel the effects of the last recession and definitely not as much as the US felt it. Because of the last recession the US will be in debt for at least 50 years and likely longer if policy changes are not made. I would also like to explain that we are more progressive than the US as we offer free health care and we're among the first countries in the world to allow gay marriage as a whole nation. I like Americans but the kind of comment "everybody is always looking to what we do and waiting on us to lead, especially money wise" is not even close to the truth.

PJW / America The Beautiful (43,330)
by Edward from USA
| |
PJW, I agree that it is kind of ridiculous to have "America The Beautiful" as a bonus track on the new album, since it is nothing new, and it doesn't make sense either. I wouldn't like to have it as a bonus track on the US version because it doesn't add anything to the album or its theme. On the other hand I think that stating negative things about other people's countries here is in bad taste. We have posters from around the world here. I may not like something from let's say Leona Lewis, but I wouldn't ever justify a statement about her music by putting down the UK whether I'm right or wrong. I think Mariah's throwing that track in there because she probably doesn't want to waste a track that would go on a future album. Japanese people seem to love everything American. I preordered the regular version, which is the real album and the way Mariah wants us to experience it.

The UK and Mariah (43,329)
by Anthony Basco from Cardiff, Wales
| |
So, it is widely documented and there is evidence to show that Mariah, having conquered so many nations and reaching unbelievable success around the world, cannot seem to connect with the wider UK audience. I think this is because of a few things, these being that the UK love an underdog, and immediately default to derision of success. If you in any way acknowledge or bask in your own success, you are no longer considered "down to earth", they are arrogant and unrelatable. Mariah has been massively successful and shock horror refuses to downplay or ignore her success. Quite rightly, in my opinion. The UK perception is that we all have bad teeth; the reason for this is, we are too embarassed to have a brace in juvenile years then too juvenile in later years to correct it. To be beautiful is not to be "true" to anything. This is changing slowly, but for now, Mariah will continue to turn off viewers, not as a reflection of her, but as a reflection of how negatively people here view themselves. Love to everyone.

America the Beautiful (43,328)
by Anthony Basco from Cardiff, Wales
| |
As a patriotic Welsh man, I applaud Mariah for having the guts to show her patriotism for her country. PJW, the US may not have the greatest international reputation, but guess what, nor do many countries. And I for one love the American ideals. Personal opinion aside, I love Mariah singing this, regardless of nationality. The world could do with a bit more pride - pride in not only our own countries but the countries and continents of the world. My husband is Filipino, and there at least, the US is not the devil. Thank you, Mariah, for sharing this. I cannot wait for this album, God praising and patriotic as it may be.

I explain a lot here but it's a Mariah forum so I'll leave it at this; research the G7, the EU, the tiger economies, European cultural influence, China's economy/trade and sphere of influence and foreign views on US foreign policy and you'll get a better idea of who looks to who, who holds financial power and what "popular" actually means through a global perspective. "America the beautiful", sadly, doesn't fit the world view of the U.S. and it's policies; economic, cultural or financial. If you'd like to chat more on it, please feel free to email me.

America the beautiful (43,322)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
I mean, really? As a non American, I only became aware of this track (and only cared for it) with the advent of the Internet and Mariah's performances of it. Which is what makes this even more silly; we've seen her sing this both live and pre recorded - the same version we'll get on the record - for 24 years now and Its been possible to download this "since 1902". Aside from all that, why oh why would non Americans want to hear this more than a couple of times or consider it worth paying extra for? No offence to American lambs, but the U.S. isn't exactly the most popular country on the planet. And it's not even like listening to the Star-Spangled Banner. America The Beautiful is almost cringe worthy glorification. It's a poor decision, in my humble opinion, and I hope it won't make the U.K edition as it won't be warmly received.

Wonderland Magazine (43,318)
by Martyn from England, UK
| |
Finally managed to get my hands on a copy of Wonderland Magazine today after hunting everywhere since Friday. I would highly recommend buying it, the photos are fantastic (Dem Babies feature in one) and I know not many people approve of Terry Richardson or Mariah's scantily clad nature, but I personally think they're fabulous. Also, each page/article in the magazine is named after a Mariah song title or lyrics which is pretty cool. The interview doesn't really tell us anything new, but it's quite nice nevertheless. Only thing I'm angry about is that they've listed the (not so new anymore) new single as "Always Mine (Eternal)" instead of "You're Mine (Eternal)". I imagine a sub editor somewhere has had a very stern ticking off from Mariah's team.

It would be much easier to explain it to you in German. Holland was the first country worldwide where Memoirs and MC2Y were released. Therefore I suggested that the Dutch will be again the ones who get the album first, exept for the German release on May 23th. PS: Do you know why "Mariahforum" isn't available?
