Re: YME opinion / career direction (41,574) by NYHotShotta from USA
I agree with you that her music besides MC2Y hasn't been the same since 2008, but I don't think JD's influence is causing her to go the route she's going. He's the one that tries to push her to do material like she used to do. It was his idea to not have her singing airy on We Belong Together. He's said before he takes more of an r&b approach whereas she almost thinks like a rapper. I agree that I feel like she is capable of releasing better music. I like #Beautiful a lot, because it's different from this dance music craze that is popular. Triumphant and The Art Of Letting Go are ok and I like the simplicity of You're Mine, though I wish she would have Mary-Ann, Trey, and Takeitha singing bv's. I know she's been inspired by her earlier albums and I hope the inspiration takes form into some great music.

Hahahahaha. I laughed so hard. That Vine video was the best I've seen in months. Thank you for sharing. Haha. The look on his face is priceless. There's nothing quite like jamming out in your car to Emotions. That video was perfect, just what I needed.

That's an awesome story. Your daughter has great musical taste. Lol. Did have you had the baby yet? If not, we need to throw you a super Mariah cyber baby shower. The theme would be from the Daydream era.

It all boils down to the music (YME opinion / career direction) (41,569) by Daydream327 from USA
First off, I have been a Mariah fan for many years, but from 2008-present (with the exception of MC2You) her music has not been anything special nor groundbreaking. The main reason Mariah's career has been on the decline imo is the music. Truth be told, Mariah could have performed YME at the Grammy's and that still wouldn't promise it to be a song that sticks and becomes a global smash. Besides we all know live performances aren't Mariah's strong point. With that being said, promotion is not the issue. And if the music was great enough, she wouldn't need all that much promo, believe me. YME is boring and average at best on Mariah's standards. The reason I have always been such a huge MC fan is the connection I have had with her music. Mariah just doesn't seem inspired anymore. That passion, authentic feeling is gone in a Mariah record nowadays. And this has nothing to do with old Mariah vs. new Mariah. When I heard WBT, Mine Again, basically that whole album and even MC2You I felt the passion and creativity, she was connected to the music. up tempos and ballads. I just don't feel that with any of her recents songs. Everything sounds soo forced, lazy and dated. In all honestly I could care less if she doesn't ever get another #1, all I want is Mariah to deliver great quality music. I want her to get inspired again. I've always loved her fun personality but in almost every interview she is going on and on about everything but the music. She doesn't seem confident in this project at all. She's just not serious anymore, everything is about her dogs and the injured arm. It just doesn't seem like her heart is truly in the music anymore. Where is the growth, the artistry? She is capable of so much more than this, vocally and musically. If this is the best single they could offer from the album, I'm not the least bit excited. She needs to realize she can still stay in her comfort zone but also take risks creatively and at the same time appeal to the young as well as older (just look at Adele). The fact is MC's formula is tired now. From her look all the way down to the videos, as well as her performances. She has to revamp if she wants the GP interested. First she needs a whole new team, she needs new writers and completely new producers. She needs to be surrounded by musicians that haven't been around her entire career that could possibly influence/inspire her to take risks both vocally and musically. If she continues to let JD influence her, she'll never grow as an artist. Because truth be told JD hasn't grown much as an producer himself, he is not mentioned along side the Pharrell's of the world today. If Mariah got together with Sia or Ryan Tedder the music that would come out of these sessions could possibly be the biggest songs of her career. She could be back on top, but she'll never take these risks and that's the problem. And she thinks someone writing for her makes her less of an artist. *sigh* But If she's gonna ignore the obvious and keep doing music now just for the heck of it (uninspired), then I do think she needs to go ahead and bow out gracefully. Leave the game with your dignity and legacy Mariah, you well be happier and more respected if you take that route.

Joyce, in general I understand your point as far a evolution is concerned. To be frank, I'm personally bothered by the "cougar hair" references because: A) She's not an old women, I can see if she was in her late 50s or 60s and B) I absolutely love the hair as it is, beautiful hair is her thing and if its not broken then don't fix it. Also I love her personality and youthful spirit, sure she could tone it down a tad, but that's just who she is. She'll never win the world over, all she can do is be the best Mariah she's capable of being. I can't speak for everyone else but sometimes Mariah is the only person in the world that can put a smile on my face whether it's through her music, presence, and yes personality; flaws and all. We all have them. So to put this to rest this debate, I respect where you're coming from overall, but we'll just have to disagree on somethings. And that's fine, let us all take a moment to bass in our own opinions.

Mariah's hair (41,567) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Ok so what on earth is cougar hair? I didn't even know cougars have a specific hairstyle. I don't think Mariah stayed the same in any era. Even after TEOM. During TEOM she had the golden blonde stick straight bum length hair (as seen in ILT and parts of SIO) and loose curls to wavy locks WBT, DFAU). During E=MC2, she had much shorter hair, a little longer than shoulder length, with darker blonde-brown hair, which was almost always just simply blow dried and soft straight. During Memoirs she had longer hair, waves and the old school Mariah tight curls. This era she's sporting straight hair again. Mariah actually changed her hair style and cut so many times, one haircut/style every era, that I can just look at a pic and identify which era it is from. As for her dresses, she has gone from flirty short dresses, to jeans and leather jacket moments to glamorous gowns, so that's not the same either. And I love her makeup, it's so natural yet glamorous, that's her signature style just like Jolie has her signature cat eyeliner look from which she hardly deviates.

Proud MC fan (41,565) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
A friend of mine, a complete non lamb (I don't think she ever heard an MC song, before I made her hear some), is a fan of the current music scene, the likes of Rihanna, Chris Brown. Lady Gaga and all. I have been playing her some MC songs every now and then and over time she started admiring her voice. She is not a complete lamb yet, but the fact that she told me the other day that she woke up at 5 am and really felt like hearing Mc's voice so she looked for her songs online, on 2 different occasions in one week, or that she really likes Mariah's voice because it's so beautiful, or that she sat and read M's entire biography online because she was interested, really makes me happy and proud. I was like R Kelly sounds good on the TMB music, and she is a R Kelly fan, but she was like, no I prefer M's solo fluttery voice over the remix. Mind you, this is someone who completely doesn't like ballads and yet listens to TAOLG. So my point is, the current generation would love M's music if only they knew more about it. M has such a beautiful voice, so captivating, it would impress anyone who takes the time to listen to her diverse range of songs (the woman did everything from ballads to rap, come on). To top that off she has the glamour and elegance and I am glad she didn't go down the "crazy hair/dress/makeup" trend like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Minaj, Riri and the others. M, I might be critical of you every now and then but I truly love you, and I'm proud to call myself a true MC fan.

Mimi (41,561) by Isaac Ortiz from USA
I agree with you 100% about the song "Triumphant". It's one of my favorites too. And I listen to it almost every other week. It's very empowering and motivating. I love the lyrics, especially the "Keep on climbing" part .I would have rather her have sung the song by herself. Same with "Migrate". T-pain ruined the song completely. His voice is terrible. I'd rather just hear Mariah. I really hope we get the new album May 6. It's time already.

BET performance (41,558) by Jeremey Carey from United States
I listened to the leaked audio from the BET Honors performance and I noticed about halfway through, she sounds exactly like the studio version. I'm worried the start of the performance promo might spark a lip sync scandal like on American Idol, "and that's the last thing I truly need" dahling. I'm really hoping this performance is live. I also really hope Mariah opens for GMA this year.

Steve from Londondary England (41,557) by Joyce from USA
I think you have a great point about recapturing adult audiences. After all, that was where she emerged from early in her career. But the challenge there is the actual degraded quality in her voice as in her past eras. Though reinventing yourself doesn't necessarily mean one does so for any target audiences, or being disingenuous for sell out purposes, but rather remaining fresh, forward and current. To those who are very young, it's like a software update to remain current and to remain current is to remain relevent, and not to a specific audiance but to the present total market. Mariah has herself refreshed/updated from time to time, from curly self-styling her own hair in 1990, to bone straight hair in Anytime You Need A Friend, and short barely there mini dress in Honey to curly and big like in Divas Live in 99. She tried an 80's flair back in 2001 with Glitter but from 2006 on has stayed the same pretty much, with variations of the cougar hair and glamour gowns from the TEOM tours. Artists and music evolve over time, saxophones or guitar solo bridges like back in the 70's and 80's are out, as is the lovely singing styles of Linda Ronstadt and Oliva Newton John, I still play on my record player from time to time whilst sitting with all my cats. I'm just saying a refresh is in order, a software update to be more palatable in the present environment and not collect dust from stagnancy.

Cute story, Mariah related (41,556) by Stacey from USA
I got into organizing my kitchen today. My five year old daughter was watching TV in the adjoining room. I turn on an MC mix playing IBLYLT. She turns around and asks, "Mom, did you turn on that beautiful music?" Yes, the next generation of MC fans are in good hands, lol.

You're Mine / album / new single (41,555) by Musti from UK
John, I agree that Mariah really wants to have another #1. She's proud of her #1's. In my opinion You're Mine had a great shot at hitting at least top 20. It's Mariah at her best in a really charming and radio-friendly song. I truly believe it's the video that destroyed its chances at being a hit. Similar to the disaster that was the #Beautiful video. She is just not good at vanity. Nevertheless the music is still perfect. All the songs she has released since MCIIYou show a different side of her as a singer and songwriter. She even managed to make an anthem out of a simple song like Bring It On Home. The way she soars at the end is to die for. I think the album's release date of May 6th is quite convenient. Perhaps IDJ tested the waters with YM. Seeing how it has underperformed I wouldn't be surprised if it gets the "Valentine's Day single" treatment (like Glitter got the soundtrack treatment) and they move forward with a new single before the album comes out. She's been giving major love to Hitboy lately. Anyone feeling thirsty?

First singles (41,554) by Matthew from USA
I'm just wondering why there is so much stress around the first single. The Emancipation Of Mimi was Mariah's most successful album of the last decade. The lead single for that album was It's Like That. I don't know where that song peaked, but I know it didn't go to number one. It was the second song from the album (We Belong Together) that made it a best seller. I'm just trying to say that the lead singe, while important, does not make or break an album. Let's all take a deep calm breath. Wax on, wax off. Lol.

John (41,552) by Isaac Ortiz from USA
Don't be so hard on my lady. I do agree about what you stated about "You're mine". I feel the same way about the song. But you have to remember, Mariah isn't the one who picks her singles. I think maybe this is why she is annoyed or upset. Maybe the song she wanted to be the single is the song you or me wanted. We just have to be patient. I'm sure the new album is great. As for it being her last, I highly doubt it. Maybe her last with IDJ. Or like someone posted, if it is, I'm sure she'll pop back with one and surprise everybody. She still can sing and will always be talented and number one. I'm really excited to know what she will name the album. How many tracks? Double album? Whatever, I just want to hear Mariah.

My reply (41,549) by Joyce from USA
Hum. I'll try to be less wordy here but: No, no artist should ever be fake or fraudulent in order to gain appeal. Please understand, that is not what I said nor anyone else here is saying now. I totally understand your point though, to not do anything drastic or desperate and to remain authentic and not to sell out as, I could not agree more. The challenge here for any artist especially ones who came to be 20 years ago, is combining the elements of the magic of who you are individually in today's market. The dresses in my closet are from the 70's and 80's and I would love to compose my own personal music the way I personally love it however, it would sound totally 80's and early 90's. I have to keep up with the current music market and within those constraints of keeping with in the range of public trends of music now, try to come up with material that's current and distinctly my own. My recommendations earlier were to utilize the art of communication of appearances to effectively speak to today's listeners whilst being true to your self - that balance of both worlds for the benefit of your career in this business. Madonna and Cher have managed to find that balance and everyone else, I'm not comparing them to Mariah at all, so please let's not start that dialogue. Aso, sorry for the undertone of mean. I'm so groutchy by lack of sleep. Life is hard at times. Hope all is well with everyone else.

Promotion (41,548) by Stacey from USA
I've been most critical of MC in the past for not having "it together" with regards to promotion. This time around, however, things look different. She announced the song weeks in advance. Once it dropped, the video and remixes were released within days. That is a huge difference from what we've seen in the past year or so with other songs. She would release a song and the video would come out weeks later, if that. Delays would be announced with no real reason why. Not good. I'm willing to give MC the benefit of the doubt because her actions as of late show a more ready Mariah. Radio is at the heart of promotion. You get them on board, and the rest will fall into place. I do agree doing shows like Fallon, Ellen, and The View are important. But, I think you'll reach a wider audience by getting radio to play your song. Time will tell.

Video boring (Will) (41,547) by Hana from UK
Videos have evolved over time. A lot of videos were pretty simple in the 80/90's. It's an era of creativity right about now. Mariah has to come with something innovative and more experimental or her videos will just fade into the background. "Video killed the radio star."

TAOLG / Triumphant (41,546) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
I wish articles would just stop calling the album TAOLG already, I mean come on. The legend herself has confirmed it's no longer the title. On another note, so I know many people, mostly lambs, did not appreciate Triumphant and said it was a bad song or whatever, but honestly I really love the song, it's upbeat, the lyrics of the chorus are uplifting and motivating, and the song has a nice beat. To top that off, the video was great, with M being the perfect glamor girl/diva and all the golden accents throughout the video. Yes, I will agree it wasn't the greatest choice for the lead single (at that point it was the supposed lead single), because people waited since 2009 to hear Mariah's new album and when they heard the rappers taking center stage, and M being the hook girl, it pissed off people, especially since M's signature/brand is her outstanding vocals. But keeping all those aside, I personally think the song isn't half as bad as people make it out to be, infact it's one of my favorite tracks of Mariah, the original and the vintage remix. Had Rihanna or JLo done the same, it would have been considered a great song because people don't really expect powerhouse vocals from them. It's just unfair to Mariah.

For me it's easy to be a fan, because I love her voice and I like the song, and in a couple months I'll get to enjoy a whole new album. As long as I'm able to connect to her songs, I'm good. You're Mine literally moved me enough to send flowers to an ex on Valentine's Day.
