Back to the album title / America The Beautiful (38,582)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
So Nick mentioned the rumoured-yet-somewhat-confirmed album title just before Mariah performed #Beautiful (which by the way, was fantastic, as was Hero). Is he just playing along at this point, to keep the talk of the album going and waiting for Mariah to confirm the title herself? Now, was it just me, or was that version of ATB a new version that she performed? That whistle note she did certainly was a different one to what she did last time she performed that song.

Hero was sung so beautiful (38,581)
by Edward from USA

I haven't heard Mariah sing Hero so well in probably ten years. It was great. And #Beautiful was the best she's sung it so far. I am really happy she killed it last night. As for #Beautiful, we have been losing spins left and right, but sales are ok. We should make it to platinum in a couple of weeks. The remixes were not released on time to boost the airplay.

Her performance of Hero was spectacular. She sang it live and proved she's still got it. She's still The Voice.

Crazy voice (38,579)

The Macy performance of Hero was really strong. It made me realise I don't understand Mariah's voice. When I start thinking it's in terminal decline, she proves me wrong with a very solid performance, full of emotion and richness of tone. Her voice is so inconsistent. How can she sound as dreadful as she did on the GMA Beautiful performance and then slay it yesterday? Any opinions from vocal experts amongst the lambs would be most welcome (Di, as an opera singer, in particular).

Well, that performance of Hero shut me up lol. That was fanatastic. Her vocals were crystal clear and all live. She did really well on #Beautiful too. This is what people expect and want to hear from Mariah Carey. The whispery/falsetto runs on here were the nuts. I loved it.

Lip-synch is brilliance (38,574)
by Commodore from USA

If Mariah did infact lip her performance, it was a great idea, considering it was a top trending story. In most cases that may seem like a bad situation, but people know Mariah can sing, so she has nothing to prove. Anyways, it gave her the 7+mill viewers from the BET Awards, plus since it was trending all week, she gathered more views which may lead to sales of the reworked #Beautiful. I wonder if this was done intentional, haha, since if she sung it live, people may not have been talking so long about it and her new remixes would have been forgotten. I wonder if the BET views count towards Billboard, because that would be cool, along with the new video she released and sales of the remixes. Once promoted, it may reach top 10 or top 5.

This is why we're fans. Everytime we think it's over, she comes back and proves us wrong. She sang. Live. I didn't get to see America The Beautiful. But #Beautiful was live and so was Hero. I thought it was interesting that Nick said that #Beautiful was from the upcoming album "The Art of Letting Go", so that's the album title lol.

I agree that as fans we need to calm down. None of us are strangers to Mariah's lipping habits. In a sense I think it's a little unfair to compare Mariah's voice to other singers'. Here is a woman who is naturally alto/borderline mezzo sorprano but has an unparallelled extension into the whistle register. We can't even hope to understand how that works and how it evolves over the years. One thing I do believe is that her voice is very fragile. I'm honestly content with her lipping for the rest of her life if it means her voice will be preseved for many more albums to come. The downside is that after the BET performance people now seriously doubt the legitimacy of her voice. Barbra was known to have stage fright and didn't perform live too often, but when she did it was always live. Her voice has never been questioned. I just hope this debacle doesn't jeopardize Mariah's legendary status. I can't wait for the new allbum.

What is a failure? (38,568)

E=MC2 and Memoirs are hardly flops. Platinum and Gold sales with Platinum lead singles. Sure, those number are dismal when compared to her earlier success and sells figures. Those numbers while not amazing are great for this day and age, a time in which the biggest selling album of the year sells 2 million. Mariah's career is hardly over. #Beautiful has sold almost 800,000 copies and was certified Gold. I hope that she makes an amazing album. Postponing this album was probably a wise decision/smart move. I think she's going to deliver one of her best. Her talent is being questioned and the last time that happened she unleashed The Emancipation Of Mimi.

We as fans need to calm down. If the woman could put out a great song at 43, then I am not giving up on her. Edward, there's a reason why Barbra Streisand sounds great. [...] If Babs was so great, why did she struggle for years to get hit songs?

Her voice (38,565)
by Terna from Nigeria

It's a case of neglect, nothing more. There are a few factors: The champagne (I think Eminem was right, our songbird has a vice). She doesn't always warmup, either hence the cracking and "all over the place" registers. When she does do it right, cutting down the champagne, warmups and breathing exercises, you get that full sonorous sound ala "Almost Home". But most damaging is definitely the champagne. Remember how at the end of Wise Girls she had to be appeased with a gift by the other two actresses? Now what was that gift again? That I bet wasn't part of the script. Lol.

I just watched a few snippets fans made of Mariah singing and it was live. She sounded amazing. Her American Idol performance was live, it was just badly edited. She sang live on GMA and Summer Jam. The BET performance, if she did in fact not sing a note live, who cares? That remix would be harder than hell to sing. She still has her voice and I highly doubt she needs to hire a vocal coach. She was trained by her mother. If she's having vocal issues she should turn to her mom. Or her team of doctors.

The voice when she was pregnant (38,563)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Well, when she was pregnant she did everything she could to have healthy babies. She had a high risk pregnancy, which must've made her more aware of healthy choices like no alcohol, healthy eating. It pains me to see a 70 years old Streisand still being able to sing well, and Mariah at only 43 struggles to sing half a song. And I wonder, will she be able to sing at all when she's 50?

Legacy of the Voice (38,562)
by Gerome from Canada
| |

Mariah is handling the public display of her voice well. I do not mind if she pre-records a lot of her performances. It keeps the integrity, legacy and supremacy of her voice. I was watching some of Whitney's last live performances and I just thank God that Mariah didn't have to go through that phase in her career. They were awful, to say the least. If she pre-records her performances a day or two before the actual event, they are pretty much legit for me. She has learned from the fallen divas of her era. I applaud and adore her more for that.

Before we get deep into negativity (38,561)
by jaker20 from US

We need to be reminded that MC is not just a voice. She's also an artist. Sure that's what she's known for, but I personally see her as bigger than The Voice. She creates great melodies, writes great songs, and is an excellent businesswoman. She can make songs where she doesn't have to belt, and that's when her artistry can really be tested. I don't see why she can't do it again. Sometimes the artistry is hiding behind the voice by screaming out loud. All her songs have this same pattern, like there's a build to the high notes in the end. Hopefully she does that less and we can test how many of her fans will stay with her. YouTube: An impromptu performance at Carlyle Jazz Club. Some belting. All live. She can do such an album, jazzy or even hip hop/jazzy, and reinvent herself, create a new genre. Lots of artists are experimenting these days. Lots of genre bending songs lately up in the charts.

What happened? When it happened? (38,560)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|

Continuing with this discussion, MC's voice changed once she started touring arenas and that's during the Daydream world tour. She did have a mini tour for Music Box, but it was really this Daydream world tour that had her playing large venues for extended periods of time that changed her voice. I don't think she should be singing Emotions or Vision Of Love in front of 20k screaming fans, but that's another discussion. So by the time Butterfly was released, the change was noticeable even on the studio albums. Yes, the range is still there, we can see proof of this even during Fallon performance this year. But it's not powerful per see, as in Vanishing or Make It Happen type of power. If you make her sing those songs in a 20k crowd arena now, her voice will be drowned out. That's why her productions now are bigger to compensate, just like any other performers now do. But arena tours is where the money is, so she's in this catch-22 where she's known as The Voice, but that moniker don't work in arena tours. That is why I kept saying, when she's touring, she can do these "performer" thing where she can backtrack, lip and mix it up with live. All performers do this. But on TV, she got to be live. And when she's all live on Tv, she should do small venues, like, again, Fallon's stage and the like.

The decline of the voice (38,559)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom
| |
|
|
Something happened in 1997 for sure. I suspect it was mostly down to lifestyle, but who knows. You'd be surprised how quickly a person's body can deteriorate when it's not being looked after. I see no reason why the same wouldn't apply to the voice. My problem is that Mariah's voice has got progressively worse since 1997. I remember thinking about 7-10 years ago, that even on her bad days, her quality of note and vocal tone make her better than anyone else around, as well as her range, which was still very good at that point. I always felt her bad days were better than most people attheir absolute vocal peak. However, I don't feel I can say that anymore. If you listen to her when she sings #Beautiful for example, she struggles to sing a very simple line. Her breathing is all over the place. Her voice cracks every time she tries to raise it. I don't feel she is better than most other singers on her bad days anymore. For me, she has totally destroyed her voice. Whataver way you look at it, the voice is wrecked. If that was Celine Dion (who admittedly has her own tricks) or Toni Braxton, we'd be ridiculing them. I don't think all is lost with Mariah though. It may just be a simple case of reconditioning her voice. When she was pregnant, her voice was the best I've heard it in years. That's what healthy living does for you. She should create her own version of vocal rehab and start afresh. I no longer look forward to her live performances. They're one catastrophe after the other.

Voice and choice (38,558)
by Sasha from Nomansland
| |
|
|
I think she never wanted to be known as the singer with the big voice and if she had the freedom to be what she wanted to be at the beginning of her career, she surely wouldn't have sang and written all those ballads she's known for. She would probably have made only rnb and hip hop songs. It was easier for her to take care of her voice when she was with Mottola, because she had no social life and music was her only escape. Now she is trapped because people want her to be what she is not and forced to sing songs that don't reflect her as a person. I think she's just doing now what she would have done since the begining if she had the choice.

BET #Beautiful performance (38,557)
by Anonymous from
| |
|

I think she sang live accompanied by a backing track. That intro was live. I've watched multiple times and I think they performed to backing track that had the three leads removed. It played only the intricately woven background vocals and harmonies. I don't care if she never performs again. I just hope she confines to make music. Her music is the soundtrack of my life. I'm hoping for an album similar to The Emancipation Of Mimi on which she blended contemporary urban (R&B and Hip hop) and old soul retro ballads. I've always loved #Beautiful. She should write (not duet) with Miguel and his producer Happy Perez. She also wrote with Bruno Mars and The Smeezingtons.
