William and Randy (83,232) by Andrew from UK
I suppose what William means is that post 1996 there was a definite shift in quality and it quickly became a reality that each performance was nerve-wracking to watch - you did not have faith that it was going to sound okay, not be lipped or not leave you embarrassed. You don't turn on a post 96 Mariah performance and think "watch this, people", instead you reach for a cushion to hide behind and think "oh shite, here we go". So Randy may be correct that there were some very good performances, but William is correct that that doesn't necessarily mean they were enjoyable. But I have, and will always, extol the virtues of A Home for the Holidays. Something about that performance, that era, that look, that personality. Magic. Except for when one choir is called "elite" and the other one wasn't. Luckily the post 96 cushion was within reach.

Hey. I believe Mariah posted something a year or two ago, saying how great it was to have AIWFC and WAYC at number 1 and 2 on iTunes or something like that. She's claimed that song, in terms of the writing credits at least. Plus I've always thought that you can hear Mariah all over WAYC. It's a if Faith Hill sung on top of a Mariah demo of the song. I mean, the way she sings it is very Mariah-esque don't you think? Peace.

Do you think (83,228) by Todd from Melbourne, Australia
That Mariah lets her kids listen to current pop songs? I have nieces and nephews their age, and they are obsessed with Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran and the likes. So I wonder if her kids are all "Mummy (or Mommy), put on 'No Tears Left To Cry' again."

I don't know why I'm even posting this on this board as it doesn't seem to fit the current narrative, but for anyone that might actually like it like it did. Here you go.

Please send me the 100% live performances post 1996 that you enjoy. As I said originally I am genuinely interested in these, because I've yet to come across one.

Does anyone know if Mariah has ever acknowledged that song? Also do we know what exactly her contribution to the song was? I don't have a copy of the soundtrack so I can't check the writing credits but is it safe to say that she wrote additional lyrics for the longer, pop version that Faith Hill ultimately recorded, while Will Jennings wrote the lyrics to the shorter, film version sung by Cindy Lou?

Bill you know I am the most disgusted fan as far as MC lipping on stage but I have to disagree with you on no good performances since 96 without lipping but the fact that I can count them down shows that in 22 years it's been mostly a farce. 1997 singing My All on Rosie was decent. 1997 SNL performance was decent. 1998 Divas Live My All was really good and then her voice fell apart. 1998 My All at the Blockbuster awards and the Pavorotti and friends were decent. 1998 Oprah performances were decent but I think Whitney won that match up. However at the 1998 Billboard Awards she was much more composed than Whitney and did a decent performance of I Still Believe. The 1998 Rosie O'Donnell performance of I Still Believe was decent. Then Whitney murdered her at the 1999 Oscars. She lip synced every damn climax through the Rainbow promotional run as well as the tour. She then had her breakdown and got some rest and sounded amazing at the A Home For The Holidays special where she sang Reflections and Never Too Far/Hero. And I would bet money those were 100% live. Same at the Radio Music Hall performance of Never Too Far. Every climax from Charmbracelet promotional run and tour was lip synced. Then we get to TEOM whereas she lip synced the climax to It's Like That but sounded beautiful and sang all of With You I'm Born Again. Then she lipsynced the climax to We Belong Together a million times. This is when she started creating raspy tracks to match her current voice so it wouldn't be so stark. I was done with MC live after that. Until surprise, surprise that Jimmy Fallon impromptu performance for the fans. She had so much control and was actually playing with a song which she never does. She normally just sticks to the record and does little improvisation. But that was almost ten years ago. She has been a complete climax lip syncing mess since. So my point: I agree that she has been disastrous and lip syncing for a long time but everytime I count her out, she surprises me. After Rainbow, I was done and she came with those Glitter performances. After Charmbracelet and TEOM, I was done and she came with Jimmy Fallon. So maybe just maybe one day we will get something and can say slay.

As Aretha Franklin would say "Lies, stacked upon more lies." Also please do speak for only yourself when you say "I've not seen her deliver a decent 100% live performance since 1996. None of us have." Well I have, countless times and that right there is a blatant fat lie. Honestly, you old fans need to quit disrespecting this woman.

Lambily treat (83,222) by Terna from Nigeria
For the greater part of this decade, Mariah has been silent recording music wise. There has been no album this decade so far except the "Chanteuse" record and even that she did not promote. The Christmas album and Number One to Infinity don't really count as core Mariah Carey records. But over the years, what has been constant is that she's been writing, collaborating. (Remember that Diane Warren ballad? And who knows a Walter Afanasieff new record.) And recording a lot (all caps). Now the recent studio pics we've been seeing she's all dressed up, since when does Mariah dress up for recording especially when writing from scratch. If my instincts are right (and they usually are) and the rumours are true about her releasing new stuff this year, I feel Mariah has long recorded all the stuff she's lined up and at this point is just mastering the records in addition to any new bops and is about to drop a Major bomb that's gonna shut naysayers down for good and at the same time make up for all the lost time because lets face it so far this decade has kinda been a waste. She hasn't had any real album rollout. It's just been a song here and there. Maybe I'm just dreaming though.

Re: A message for B (83,214) (83,220) by Bill from the UK
I have watched the Beacon Theatre performances and, like all her live performances of the last 10 years, there is more lipping than actual singing. The Fallon performance was okay, but it wasn't exactly If It's Over at the Grammy's or Hero at London on the Daydream tour. I don't believe she has stage fright. She mentioned she suffered from nerves when she started out, which is understandable. But come on, she's done more performances on stage than I've had hot dinners. I wouldn't say she slayed Can't Let Go either. She got through it, with a backing track kicking in at the end. I've not seen her deliver a decent 100% live performance since 1996. None of us have. She needs to simply stop deceiving all of her fans and either admit the truth of the matter, or sing, write and record within the one octave she has now. The ruination of her voice was all her own doing so she needs to show us the respect and love we show her and be honest with us all.

Re: A message for B (83,214) (83,219) by Andrew from UK
Mariah is not "slaying" CLG. Like everything, half the thing is lipsync. On "just cast aside" she doesn't even remember to move her mouth to the "side" syllable as she gets ready for the playback to kick in. The "no, no" for the "I just can't get you out of my mind" climax is strained and tuneless after an inexplicable remarkable range and power of singing. Change the topic if you like as long as there is an openness that the topic is not her "current voice" but the significant degradation that has not been heard in this way before. This alarms me. I am not sure why it does not alarm others. Also, posting that Mariah should work with The Smeezingtons, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd etc is hardly changing the topic since you bring it up every couple of months.

I asked B.Scott (83,218) by John john from UK
Not sure if anyone knows B.Scott but her and Mariah are close and have been for some time now. Lately I've noticed she never posts about Mariah (like nearly a year) but she post lots on J.Lo and almost daily about Beyoncé. Beyoncé blinked yesterday twice in 2 seconds and she posted it. Lol. Well I instagram messaged her and asked if they were all ok? And why she hadn't posted anything. She replied almost immediately. She said that they talk all for time and are and always be the greatest of friends. She said she hadn't had time to post much (mmmmm) as she was concentrating on a brand she'd been working on. Anyway a day later, she post on Instagram and it's a post about Mariah. I'd like to think I helped with that one. (Yes Andrew even this is a story about me and how truly amazing I can be.)

B, while your list of hopeful collaborators would be interesting except for Miguel and Happy Perez as we have seen their work together but I would not mind another round. I think that we will be surprised with the other people who Mariah has decided to work with besides the usual suspects for the new LP I think that is what we are more intrigued about.

Regarding Max Martin. I don't remember Mariah working with any producers from overseas. The bulk of her work is with the US producers. I doubt she will work with him because she doesn't want to be associated with pop music.

Ryan Tedder

Have you watched any of her Christmas performances at the Beacon theater? Have you seen her 2013/2014 performance of The Art of Letting Go on Fallon? Or more recently her slaying Can't Let Go? Mariah's voice is delicate and she's uncomfortable on stage yet when well rested, rehearsed, and in the right environment she can still deliver live. Personally, I think she's doing the residencies and tours to overcome her stage fright and become a better performer and obviously to reconnect with and reengage her fanbase like she did in 2003 with the Charmbracelet world tour after critics and fans alike began guestioning her vocal abilities.

Imagine being at the controls when she recorded Daydream and Butterfly like he was, he was probably awestruck by her voice. I know I would've been. I would like to hear him talk about working with Mariah and her recording process. I love the David Cole and Robert Clivillés interview in which they talked about dozing off and Mariah waking them up when she hit a certain note. Was they referring to the recording of Emotions or You're So Cold?

Current voice (83,211) by Lara from Middle East
The new generation doesn't give a damn about singers ability like we used to back in the 90s and early 2000. Beyoncé realized that and go listen to her last singles, not one is vocally demanding. I agree Unforgettable is a good direction. Mariah has a distinctive tone that is for me more important than her belts. I'd like her to take a bit more pop direction too, not necessarily with Walter. Almost home was really underrated pop song. Maybe a collaboration with Maroon 5?

At least she'll have something else to talk about other than her 500 hours of beauty school and her unfunny private jokes with her background singers (Big Nasty, home of the fish sandwich etc).

Celine in Manila (83,209) by 90sMariah from SG
I'm trying to dissect her performances on which songs and which parts she is lip syncing, but it's too difficult. I guess the only way to check is to play her performances on top of the other. She is just too darn good at it. But one thing is for sure though is that she when she comes in to add her ad libs at the end of her songs, her voice still matches the possibly pre-recorded parts. What I'm saying is that her live and pre-recorded voice are seamless. Even the audio and sound mixing are impeccable. Celine is so fun to watch with her down to earth theatrics and personality. She doesn't dance nor does she run around the stage, but her stage presence and showmanship shines through. Someone we know or may not know should maybe try and emulate Celine's dedication and professionalism. That's all.

Re: A message for B (83,200) (83,208) by Matthew from USA
M from UK, I wish I could give you a gold star. I agree with you wholeheartedly. There are artists, like Beyonce and Madonna, whose passion comes from the performance side of things, and you can see it in the level of detail they put into that aspect. Mariah is most passionate in the studio. And yet she has embarked on a series of tours and bookings which I can only assume is at the behest of the label. It's frustrating to see her spend time lip-syncing though and it's frustrating that whoever is handling her only cares about the money. Tours make more money than albums today. I hope the label and handlers will reinvest some of that money into promotion when her album finally drops, but we know the label strategy is to "leak" singles. If something is a insta-hit, it gets promoted. Otherwise, crickets. Mariah still has a voice. It is ridiculously inconsistent. But given 12 or so takes in the studio, I believe she can stitch something together. She's always been good at that. She has a good ear and pen skills. At this point, make music, experiment with sounds and genres, collab with new artists and take ideas from them as well. I don't care if it's a hit. Most good music today isn't. And if the CEO's and execs won't let her, then she needs to emancipate herself yet again. There's no point trading sing-sing for yet another kind of touring prison.
