Re: Article: The diva goes casual (75,376) (75,377)

I'm not a huge fan of her turning into Stella either (I totally get what you're saying on that point), but I can't on one hand complain about her not putting on clothes and then backdoor and complain when she has on clothes. I have to look at the positives. She looks nice. The twins are present, but not in our faces. She doesn't have on a stank bodysuit and she has on pants.

Article: The diva goes casual (75,376)

I just read the article and saw the pics. Nothing against casual, but to dress like Crustella isn't casual. When I saw the first pic I thought ok, but I could see a big handbag and a female hand behind MC and I already knew who it was. Lol. The second pic was the prove that (surprise) the black leather jacket was also there. Can we get more family (Mariah/Nick and the kids) pics please? Because it was nice to see her without "the manager". I think I'm not alone with this thought.

Almost Home could have been a hit, had Mariah and Disney promoted it. Disney usually goes all out promoting songs that are released as singles to promote their films but for some reason they didn't. I Don't is a good song that could have been better had Mariah interpolated more of Jones's song into it, especially lyrically. I didn't care for YG's verse (verses) until he performed it on Kimmel with Mariah. He steadied her nerves when he came back on stage and she let lose and slayed.

Endless Love (75,374)

Mariah and Lionel need to release a version of Endless Love. It would be an excellent way to promote the tour and I could see it becoming a hit on Adult Contemporary radio.

I meant to include AIWFCIY but somehow didn't. When I was talking about people thinking she covered a Phil Spector song I was referring to AIWFCIY.

I so disagree with him. I cannot believe he of all people would count Mariah out or bet against her. Funny how a few years later he was banking on Mariah's new album being a success but was fired before it was released.

Article: Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie not feuding over concert tour (75,371)

If ticket sales were that bad they wouldn't have rescheduled the tour after postponing it. They would have just released a statement saying that Lionel's knee is still not fully healed so the tour had to be cancelled or postponed indefinitely. Don't believe tabloid rumors.

Mariah's fanbase was huge during that era and if the song had been given a commercial release we, the lambily, would have made it happen.

Real recognizes real (which is an idiom hip hop culture uses to refer to the tendency or ability for real individuals to identify, connect with, or otherwise respect, other real individuals). When she preformed Hero she was acknowledging Mariah's talent as not only a vocalist but as a songwriter. I'm sure Mariah was honored, one of her idols singing one of her songs. I would love to hear other legendary vocalists, like Patti and Gladys, cover Mariah's classic.

I didn't know Aretha sang Hero. I only remember seeing a clip of her singing TMB. That was hilarious. Lol I agree. I know Mariah's heart should have swelled with so much pride hearing that a legend such as Aretha knows her music.

Aretha - "Hero" (75,365)
by Billy from Greece

I'm surprised that this has not been discussed more extensively, i.e., Aretha performing Hero around the time it came out. What a shock and honor must have been to young Mariah to have her idol singing a song she wrote. And obviously, Aretha must have been listening to Mariah to decide to cover the song.

Re: Selena Gomez's "Bad Liar" / fresh sound (75,360) (75,363)

I loved her song The Heart Wants What It Wants. Like Britney before her she works with the right people. Mariah could learn a lesson from these girls. She needs to work with new collaborators, songwriters and producers. As long as she just updates her signature sound and doesn't pull a 180 she won't be viewed as desperate for a hit. Its worked before, #Beautiful was an of the moment song that seamlessly updated her signature sound.

Good for You and Hands to Myself are really good. Super minimal production yet still manages to highlight her voice - which isn't really there to begin with, but the song just works with her limited voice. They also have such nice hooks and sound really cool and smooth. Selena Gomez somehow reminds me a bit of Troye Sivan, an artist with a pleasant-sounding voice, but not that much power or technique behind it (except that he actually writes and produces his own material, unlike Selena Gomez). His songs also manages to enhance and highlight his voice really really well, and I just absolutely adore his album Blue Neighbourhood. If Mariah wants to try a new musical direction, I would want her to come up with a song with a vibe like this. Not necessarily the exact same, but a smooth, edgy, midtempo song with a touch of electronic, combined with Mariah's signature R&B/Hip-Pop sound, and with simple, catchy yet poetic lyrics, will guarantee Mariah at least a top 40 hit if promoted well.

Selena Gomez's "Bad Liar" / fresh sound (75,360)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

Girl has a wisp of a voice but she sure knows how to use it to her advantage, surrounding herself with the right people to work with and experimenting with different sounds, samples and textures to compensate for her vocal limitations. She was great throughout Revival (loooved Good For You, Hands to Myself and Me &The Rhythm), and her latest is definitely creative and catchy in all the right ways. It stands out from everything else currently on the radio. That Talking Heads sample is just genius. There was a long period when Mariah was also this innovative. I really miss that time. As for Selena, well done and I can't wait for what comes next.

Hello ladies and gents. I'm 28 and I'm almost home. The vocals sound autotuned and yes she holds a lovely note in the song but it just falls flat to me.

It's really hard if not impossible to name one. Like someone mentioned here, Mariah has so many and a view of categories like "bestselling" or "artistically signature" shows it even more. I would pick Hero, My All and Fantasy. Also in Europe she's still very known and praised for "Without you", which even was a number one back then.

Yikes, looks like I'm the oldest here (getting used to that being the case). I'm 44, but was totally anti Mariah until 2005 if that means anything. I bought Music Box a few years ago to see if my opinion had changed, but no, still awful. Early stuff and later stuff I'm on board with, but the early to mid 90"s, nothings changed, it's still pap.

Gaga's The Cure (75,356)
by virgo.miss from australia

Hi all, haven't been by in a while so not sure if this has already been discussed, but does this song (and Gaga) not sound like something that didn't quite make the cut on TEOM or one of the next two? It's getting quite a lot of airplay here, so clearly there is a market for Mariah's favourite whispery R&B style.

I'm 21 years old, I started to follow Mariah when I was about 7 years old by the time she came to Shanghai to hold the concert. That's the first time I know how the western white woman looks like (blonde hair, big eyes, long legs and also high note ) when I didn't even know how to say English. After Mariah finished her concert in Shanghai, I learned that Whitney Houston will follow her and also hold a concert in Shanghai. At that time I asked my mum she likes Mariah or Whitney? Her answer is Whitney but I didn't tell her that I was more interested at that white blonde hair beauty Mariah Carey at that time.
