Re:Randy (68,730) by Nikki from usa
Those are some interesting points. But, does "treated me kind, sweet destiny" sound like "when you walk by looking fine"? Mariah's debut had a much more alto sounding voice but, compared to Fantasy's soprano voice they sound nothing alike. I think Mariah showed a lot of vocal variance in Melt Away with her vocal tones and stylings, but even Melt Away's alto Mariah sounds nothing like the deep tones found on Vision of Love. I don't know that everyone is sticking their heads in the sand so much as noticing a continual change in Mariah's voice as the years go on. Some folks act like Mariah woke up one day and her voice was different when it's rarely ever been the same for more than 2-3 years at a time since she came out. I don't know anything about events, but there were other changes between '96-'97. For one, the internet blew up and media in general began expanding. Mariah's Daydream tour had her only singing 1 concert per week for 1 month at a time. 2nd month was off and she wrapped it up in month 3. In '97 Mariah began speeding up her promo, doing more of it, and taking far less time off for breaks in between.

Troll much? Am I the only one on this board who notices you are brand new here, made your debut accusing me of being Morgan, then turned up again singing Shawn's praises; and now are talking smack about Morgan? You don't need a law degree to see what's going on here. Maybe you should take your issues directly to Morgan or seek help elsewhere and not on this board.

Thought that was common knowledge by the lambs. Shawn has mentioned her generosity and support in several interviews. Here is a mention of it in Vibe.

Re: Randy (68,718) (68,725) by Randy from USA
But I have to tell you, Butterfly is what made me a die hard. No one has ever and no one will ever write a commercial album with vocals: the last chorus of Butterfly, My All, Outside, Whenever You Call, The Beautiful Ones. With lyricism: Butterfly, Breakdown, Close My Eyes, Outside. With crossing genres. Hip Hop: Honey, Breakdown, Pop: Whenever You Call, My All, Dance: Fly Away/Butterfly Mix, R&B: Babydoll. And the album was cohesive. It still is mind boggling, when you compare albums that get noticed now like Adele's 25, Beyonce's Lemonade and Rihanna's Anti. They aren't able to do what MC did in 97. But at the same time, that period marked the beginning of her vocal downfall. You can tell the difference even in the studio. "When you walk by every night talking sweet and looking fine, I get kinda hectic inside" sounds so much different in tone than "Honey you can have me when you want me, just simply ask me to be there." And that's what infuriates me about this board. No one wants to believe that there was some traumatic event, besides the divorce, that happened between Tokyo 96 and Butterfly promotion 97. Everyone wants to put their head in the sand and say "Oh she's the best singer in the world and she cant sing like she used to because it's been 27 years."

Christmas wish covers (68,724) by BH from UK
Since Christmas is fast approaching, I want to make a little festive wish of my own. I've secretly always wanted Mariah to cover one of my favourite Jackson 5 songs: I Wanna Be Where You Are. We all know she touched I'll Be There with her magic stick and I personally think she would turn this song into something special. Mariah if you're out there please please please cover this song for me. So guys, what's your Christmas wish cover?

Pretty sure she did not pay for his education but I could be wrong. Where did anyone see that? I'm sure she appreciates having at least one family member who actually worked hard for something. Not counting her mother here, but Alison is a tragedy we all know about and in many ways Morgan is worse - able bodied, seemingly smart guy who just, for whatever reason, was never able to make it. Always has his hand out to M and, when she didn't pony up, went to the press for paychecks. Really sad. Said it was about Alison but I read on some blog of the guy who caretakes for Alison that Morgan never sent any cash over from his checks on stories. Really pathetic to profit on that situation - not sure how he sleeps.

Beautiful AIWFCIY cover (68,722) by Martyn from England, UK
I'm not usually into cover versions of All I Want For Christmas because I think Mariah's version is so untouchable and flawless, but a friend showed me this version today and I absolutely love it. The lady who sings it is called Helen Fischer and I believe she's a German popstar. I don't really know anything else about her, but I thought I'd share.

I see he has been tweeting Mariah about possibly working together. I hope not. Mariah needs to sing alone, at least that is my preference. Please don't waste your time with an old joke. Perhaps he could write her a song, but there are so many good songwriters out there that she can work with. But, she will do what she will do.

Shawn is not gay as you seem to be saying. He seems to indicate otherwise on twitter and based on this bio. They referred to Mariah as his famous cousin, but we know he is her nephew/brother as she always says.

Randy (68,718) by Gilles from Malta
I do agree with you Randy as well, you did remind me a feeling that I had back in day in 1996 when I was to the Daydream tour in Paris. This feeling was like what happened with her album named Butterfly. I didn't get what happened to her voice. Daydream was filled with a powerful voice and the first time I heard at the radio Honey, I was like... is it really her singing this track, it was like not the same voice anymore. For sure something did happen, we all know that she left Tommy, went through a divorce and a lot of drama and stress, we will certainly never really know what happened, but we can guess it through her art cause she kind of refused to answer to all those questions that are certainly too private. A lot of conspiracy theories were born from those days. Her image had changed and she looked current and sexy more than ever, she was more praised for her body and the fun than her way to make music, she battled in a certain way on the two sides, but people liked to treat her as a diva, media and people treat her this way and she has become one, it is a kind of picture, an icon or as certain philosophers would say an imago dei or in the Indian culture an avatar because that was what the main audience kind of wanted. Now that she is acting or not as one, everybody is asking for her to come back to what she was. Marylin Monroe life style means not be understood by anyone. Live on TV doesn't make a lot of sense anymore now a day, because it is mixed and arranged to deliver a certain quality, I do agree with you that I would love that Mariah does something new adapted to her current voice but would the people follow her this way or would they criticize the new picture with her successful past? Regarding her job and ours I do agree that we haven't the right to do any mistake, but we have a job that can not be compared to her, it is like some professionals sportive taking steroids or drugs to reach number one position, people are cheating it is not new after it depends which partnership, sponsors and other stuff but it is another subject. Mariah is a myth between the Greek and the Egyptian mythology and she is now a true legend. But as many of those myths, stories or whatever, sometimes the illusion is too intense for being taken seriously and create frustration, love, anger, obsession, adoration, disciples, stories. In my case I would say that I do enjoy everything that is new depending even if I do or not like it (for example I am not a fan of Infinity, Touch My Body) but I do appreciate them as a new work and material. I do regret one thing, I grew up with Mariah's voice and lyrics and music, it did follow my journey in the circle of life, I am a bit out of it now, because I am lucky and happy, I've found love, Mariah gave me her support in my drama past life and I will always be grateful to her, I hope that one day the drama will stop for her and for other people as well for being inspired in another way.

Re: Mariah, MC, Mimi (68,714) (68,717) by Tijl from Belgium
I really enjoyed reading your statement. However I would like to point out that the DFAU performance was actually amazing knowing that she suffered from technical mishaps. As the earpiece was not working she couldn't hear her own voice so she basically sung the song from her memory. That is why she received the standing ovation. One can see her pulling out the earpiece at a certain point and continue the performance without. I have to agree with many fans that I am worried about where her career is going. Furthermore I honestly miss the real Mimi. What happened to the perfectionist professional singer? She is surrounded by dubious people (I can't even mention her name any longer as I find her atrocious) who crave on her fame and fortune for their own benefit. Interviews these days are tedious and superficial. The outfits are proposterous and degrading. She has become a charicature. Let's pray she is not heading full speed to a Michael Jackson finale.

It's sweet that Mariah paid for his education. Having Alisson for a mother can't have been easy, even these days being black and gay at Harvard was probably no easy road either. Nice that his auntie had his back.

Mariah's live singing (68,715) by darrian liu from taiwan
Is actually improving right now, but she could do much better and possibly change the public perception of her voice if she rearranges her songs, ala TGIFY. The problem is she won't budge and continue to sing her songs in her original arrangements (although the keys are lowered), and that's what making people constantly compare her voice now with her 90s voice. Mariah sounds (all caps) magical in acoustic settings, just look at what happened in Jimmy Fallon (both the surprise and the Christmas one) and those various TGIFY Vegas performances. It seems like her pride is too big for her to see those possibilities and accept that her voice just isn't the same anymore. And when you encounter change, you have to adapt and that's what she's supposed to do. Pull a Lady Gaga (her AMAs performance is poignant, absolutely beautiful) and do stripped down performances with just a guitar and make new vocal arrangements for her current voice, I know that for sure, she can't lip in those performances (the backing track would really sound out of place and obvious) and so she has to sing live. My All acoustic and Vision of Love acoustic would sound super lovely, don't you think?

Re: Mariah, MC, Mimi (68,713) (68,714) by Randy from USA
I have to first say your post was well written and very respectful but I have to strongly disagree. See there's a few things at play here. Firstly that MC is having vocal problems is nothing new. In 96 when she had the Tokyo concert she sounded amazing. The next time we saw her sing live was the Oprah performance in 97 and she struggled and lip syncd. Something had changed. She never addressed it. She's had many great performances since 97, but mostly it's touch and go, with background singers being loud and backing tracks. It's not for preservation of her voice. Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin held on to their voices for decades without issue. Now their voices are starting to fray but Mariah frayed in 97 and was really going through a rough spot in 98, 99 and 2000. She had only been out a couple years. Now we can all speculate it was recording an album every year with three remixes per single. Or it was her starting to hang with rappers that smokes in the studio and her splashes. I think the sheer disgust is the amount of deception involved. Check out her performance of DFAU at the AMAs in 2006. She sounded horrible during the verses and lip syncd the final chorus and got a standing ovation. And there's always some excuse. I used to think a little rain cloud was following MC around to purposely screw up her performances. Oh an ear monitor, oh the AC, oh I have food poisoning, oh the casket was in front of me, oh it's too early to sing, oh it's cold outside at this outside concert, oh I didn't get enough sleep. Those are all things she has literally said. As a school teacher, if I don't teach guess what? I get fired. So what happens when a singer doesn't sing? Nothing. And she commands $1 million for a personal concert. I don't quite make that much. Sarcasm. I love MC. The depth in her body of work, makes her counterparts seem so surface. She is a true artist. But the deception is repugnant. And when Whitney had issues with her voice she went out like a soldier. Let me say this. I'm not saying all hope is lost. I used to think that until the Impromptu for Jimmy Fallon and the fans. Even some of the Vegas performances had me surprised. But when it comes to American television and high stakes whereas everyone is watching performances, she folds like a card table. And lambs keep forgetting that she is considered one of the best of all time. We should not even be having these arguments. And if there is a problem, why does she continue to make difficult arrangements and create songs she can't perform live. I hated Infinity, but my first though was, she can't sing this live. I had the same thought when she recorded One More Try and Heavenly on MIAMTEC. I want her to have integrity. I don't think as a die hard I am asking too much.

Mariah, MC, Mimi (68,713) by Gilles from Malta
Let's be real, please. If we want to keep Mariah in the business for long we fans, lambs or whatever, we have to understand that she needs to lipp to keep her voice in a good shape. She feeds us a lot thanks to medias, social medias, world tour, albums, tv appareances, Christmas concert, Christmas TV show and I am sure that we "fans" are certainly more demanding than her. Ok it is her job, but I do not think as an artist that she wants to damage her voice (gift, talent) to satisfy all of us, she needs to protect it, because she won't even be able to live without her gift. If we all wait for the voice crack it means that she has never left "[...]", are we worse than Mottola? Regarding her life style, Mariah in her childhood had nothing, the materialistic experience came at her 21. She is in that world for a long time now. Regarding her own world, I would not like to be in, material world is a display and it is thanks to her children family and entourage that she keeps grounded or not, I am pretty sure that sometimes she just dreams to fly away. Celebrity comes with a price that is not about money but no privacy and "we watch her falling down" so she learns the art of letting go, it is what it is. Everything happens for a reason and she knows that. I know Mariah the artist side but I do not know her, judging is so easy. I am one of those lucky fans who was to 4 concerts. It was magical, the voice always been there, interlude, interromptu, sometimes it did switch to lipp, so what? First I was like most of us, saying it is unfair, but it is fair for the artist. She is a singer, she will remain as a singer. If she is recording in studio her voice must keep warm and not too much used. And regarding some songs, we know that a song is a mood and as she is an artist, it can happen that she doesn't feel in the mood. Sometimes she is in the mood when the Grigio flows, I know some artists that can only be creative high or drunk or in their own world. Let's not talk please about all those singers, painter, philosophers that made earth cry jump with their songs or their art because I do not want to talk about them but there are so many. It is pleasant to watch some of the new generation discovering Mariah through the time, they are discovering an artist that they didn't really know with plenty of lives performance, remixes, side B, there are amazed with a spark in their eyes. Older fans like me we are waiting for something new stuff every months even every days (joking but close to the reality). Let's be more comprehensive and supportive. Whatever the situation, MC is that singer that one day opened your heart more than ever and we felt a connection, some people call it love. Anyway we could write a novel about it. Have a nice weekend.

Re: Comeback (68,705) (68,712) by Will from England
I have to disagree with your statement that Mariah has toured very little (recently I assume). She's been performing more or less consistently since the start of her Vegas show, had the successful SSFT run, Beacon shows, Hallmark special, private shows for various people, Essence etc. so this is most she has performed since forever on a consistent basis. Her voice, compared to that (capital letters) AIWFCIY performance and the beginning of TEC tour, is considerably better than what it was. It is 100%? Not really, it has its rough days but she's belting and experimenting with more confidence than she was.

I said counsel slash nephew. She put him through law school, so that should entitle her to his legal advice. Lol. I know he has another job for Nike I believe. Note he was seen out with her when she and Nick made their separation public and interestingly he was there around the time of the JP breakup this summer. I notice he tweeted her ring, with some statement from song lyrics. Anyway, she should have at least one family member who is looking out for her. Hopefully that is the case, because she has always looked out for him.

Divas scares the hell out of me (68,708) by Randy from USA
Here's the thing, I do sometimes you guys are too harsh but when I see what's being put out there for public conception, I'm like damn this is why the lambs are turning on her. Whoever just said it needs to be about the voice is correct. Lower the keys of songs, and stop having your background singers cover for you or backing tracks for that matter. She can still do something at live shows but as far as American television, she always falls apart. And for the last time MC's voice isn't in disrepair because of 27 years in the business, she started fraying in 98. Watch Vision Of Love on The View from 1998. She let Celine upstage her on Testimony. Whitney upstaged her at the Oscars in 99. None of that would have been possible in 95.

Shawn doesn't work for her - he graduated from Harvard Law School and worked at a law firm for a decade. I think he's at a sports-apparel company as an executive now. He's definitely a bit of a snob on twitter, though at least he doesn't hide it. Ha. I think Mariah went to Oprah's school opening in Africa a while ago. I think they're close.

Given that Mariah has toured very little and when she does tour the high, belting or difficult parts (not even the difficult parts anymore) are lipped, why does Mariah's voice continue to decline so much? People may emphasise how long she's been in the business for, but this is misdirection. In reality, relatively speaking, she really hasn't done that much actual singing.

I just want to say it was my personal opinion. You have a right to feel the way you feel and so do I. If you watch [...] who is now off the air people wanted to be the next Mariah Carey. At some point in time so did Christina, Ariana [...]. Mariah does not sing like [...] once did because she has been in the business for 26 going on 27 years. That is a very long time to be recording music. [...] voice will suffer some normal wear and tear. [...] is to be expected. Once these ladies record for as being long as Mariah their voices will change as well too. Grant Mariah is known for her drinking and all but that is her personal business. She can still out sing most of these women on a bad day. I am a fan of her voice and music period. I personally think she she is prolific musician. That none of these wannabes can't touch.
