I really relate to what you're saying here Marissa. I don't think anyone expects people to always agree with Mariah's choices in the name of being a fan. But, if following her is a constant thorn in your side that leaves you disappointed and miserable, then what is the payoff? Realistically, I just don't expect Mariah to address her voice the way Randy is describing. This is showbusiness, she won't. It just doesn't happen like that. I don't really feel like I'm owed an explanation as a fan either. No one who has been in the game as long as Mariah has, stays vocally the way they were at 19.

Mariah is such an amazing songwriter. She should get much more acknowledgement for that. And Sade is really unique. I love her voice and her style.

Singer-songwriters (65,910)

Props to Mariah for being one of the most prolific of them all and certainly the best selling female artist. There are lots of others who also write songs, including Aretha, Anita, Chaka and one of my other faves Sade. Sade is on her own level because she co-writes all of her songs, but she just drops off, then pops up when she so desires. Sade pays no regard to trends or others' timing lol.

I understand what you are saying and have been labeled as a "negative lamb" myself, but I feel like a lot of people who are chronically dissatisfied with her career follow it out of inertia and habit rather than having genuine hope that things will improve. Nothing that lasts over 10 years is a phase. It's a way of life. That's like parents who have a son that's had 6 boyfriends and still think that him being gay is "just a phase". Mariah will never stop lipsyncing completely. She will never bury all of her diva habits and lingo. She will never go back to making albums that are 85% ballads. Nor will she ever sit down in an interview or Snapchat video and give us a play-by-play of what happened to her voice since 1996. Especially as someone who is considered one of the top 3 singers in history, she will never straight up acknowledge vocal damage, the same way Whitney never did. As a person who set the bar for her vocals as high as a skyscraper from the very beginning, there is too much pressure for her to be perfect for her to completely come clean, which is why she lipsyncs in the first place. Expecting her to go back to who she was 20 years ago is like expecting a person who's been dead for 20 years to dig their way out of their graves and go for a jog around the cemetery. A lot of people think I'm negative but Mariah has actually implemented some of the improvements I have wanted to see which is why I'm still here. If she was steadily pissing me off since having dial-up internet was normal then I wouldn't make myself miserable watching her every move. At the end of the day, I'm not trying to silence you because anyone who doesn't violate the rules of this board has a right to be here whether I agree with your opinions or not, but even as a fellow "negative" lamb, I can't pretend to relate to having Mariah chronically disappoint me to that extent nor can I act like there's any hope of her changing in the ways that you would prefer.

Chaka is also a songwriter, she just doesn't co write all of her songs. She has written or co-written some of her most poignant songs, like "Angel", "Love Me Still" and "Packed My Bags" and I believe "Sweet Thing". She is also a drummer. I'm just giving CK credit for singing live all the time, although she does have a reputation for good and bad nights and even skating through concerts, due to her addictions. It's not about who is better, IMO. I love them both.

We found a version of the Mr. Dupri remix I've never heard before. It doesn't have any rap in it. I love it. In a record store I found a vinyl of "Fantasy" and its remixes. There was a version with vocals that is not up anywhere on the web. Unfortunately I lost it when I moved out from my apartment.

I don't know but I think this short clip of her singing Charlie Brown Christmas in Vegas on 9/3/16 is a good indication she's going to do it this year. Her whisper register sounds better than the record here.

Dude I'm confused why everything you post is negative. We understand you relate to her struggles due to your sexuality issues, but must you beat a dead horse?? You whine and whine and it's almost like you need meds. Butterfly on SNL was beautiful and the pain is in her face, Looking In was fully live, the Power Of My All in Vegas. I used to be negative and blah like you but I looked for happiness and found it. Stop abusing this board for a beating post. It's almost sickening bro, you're getting to the level of the angry [...] who I don't know.

The difference is Mariah is a songwriter and when she's releasing hits we and the public let her slide when it comes to her performances. However, no-one can deny that her voice is continuing to improve with each performance. She's always shaky on the first few nights but by the end of the leg she slays.

A disertation on being negative (65,898)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
Marissa, as one who has been called negative on this board, let me tell you about the disgust some of us have been feeling and why we choose to stay. Firstly, when I view how wonderful MC sounded in Tokyo in 1996, I think that's one of the best singers in the world. And then at her very next public appearance Oprah 97 she sounded awful and that was the beginning of the lip syncing. I could've forgiven her for one bad performance but she struggled through all of the Butterfly performances and by 1998 she was a hoarse cracking mess. Many want to claim there has been a gradual loss of the voice but in actuality it seemed to happen over night. And I'm not mad something happened to her voice, she's human. I'm mad that the woman who claimed to be so close to her fans couldn't tell us and never addressed what happened. She chose instead to create studio magic and then lip high full voice belts through all of the Rainbow, Charmbracelet performances both televised as well as the tours. She started "singing" again in 2005. Sort of. I think LA Reid had a sit down with her and made her do the work involved in repairing what was left since whatever happened. But I will not entertain she sang that entire 2006 Grammy performance. That was such a cut and paste job. Her engineer is a pro. Again this is not about her voice being lost, this is about deception. People wanted to attack Whitney for sounding awful in her last years but I have much more respect for a soldier, than a magician. Why stay? Because we know what this woman is capable of. There are things MC can do that no one can do. Put 3 and 4 syllable words in a Pop song and have it be a number 1: My All, Heartbreaker. Mix genres: The Butterfly, MIAMTEC albums. Combine love songs with introspective songs on an album: Looking In is on the same album with Fantasy. That's why it kills me when she allows people to limit her to an R&B singer. R&B albums are all about love and heartbreak. MC writes about other things. Sort of like a Joni Mitchell mixed with Chaka Khan. And on a personal note. I have had some struggles in my life with my sexuality and my family and songs like Close My Eyes, Outside have helped me through. While songs like Through The Rain, Obsessed, Languishing and Right To Dream are pure genius lyrically. So why stay? I would never abandon MC, she has been by my side metaphorically since I was 10. I am now 36. I know what she is capable of and I have a right to dream that this deception, laziness, aloofness and indifference when it comes to singing live, making music, promotion, social media and her fans is just a phase and she will return to what she was or at least strip it all down and be herself one day. I love this board and in particular the webmaster for allowing all points of view.

Does anyone know if MC will be doing her Christmas concert at Beacon Theatre this year? If I recall, weren't the official announcments for both 2014 and 2015 made late in each respective year?

How do you even have the patience to continue to watch her career closely if you've been dissatisfied for the past 15 years though? And what is the point because if she's hasn't implemented whatever changes you've wanted in that lengthy span of time, what is the payoff of continuing to emotionally invest in her? Do you have a breaking point regarding when following her career wouldn't even feel worth the effort?

Re: Mariah Carey's HIV+ sister (65,888) (65,894)
by Andrew from UK

"My statement about those who have contracted HIV by accident was to illustrate that not everybody got it just because they knowingly put themselves in risky situations." It'a as clear as day. You are making a distinction between these two groups whereas they are people who below to one group: HIV positive. How somebody came to contract it should be of total irrelevance. To say that it is not is to suggest one group more worthy of compassion or assistance than the other. There is no other reason for the distinction. In short, it shouldn't matter how somebody got something, what matters is they need help, just as the junkie who free-willingly stuck the first needle in his arm needs, and deserves, assistance. If Alison has access to treatment then that is great. Every man, woman and child in the UK is given treatment, if they need it, for free for the rest of their lives without question - without ever being questioned how they contracted HIV. The judgement would be, and is, already made in asking the question, in making the distinction. The judgement is made by slapping it on news articles where it is of little relevance. And Martyn is perfectly correct: what this all actually does is make it less likely that people will go and get tested for fear of being labelled in a negative way as somebody less deserving of compassion and understanding - of being fair game - because they were to blame and they should have known better. The stigma around HIV is very apparent in news articles concerning Alison and in views expressed here. Let's move on.

August 28th Vegas moments (65,893)

Yay to continued improved vocals and more stripping back some pre-records on another song. Here is Mariah singing the first verse of Fantasy live again and she sounds good. How long has it been since she sung that part live? This is my favorite TGIFY performance on this leg. She even did a little scatting. Her belts sound so full and rich. And of course she did another great performance of My All on the 28th. She has a lot of great moments from the 28th.

Morgan Carey is dead wrong on so many levels for going to the press bad mouthing Mariah. If this was really truly about helping Alison, then Morgan would be the big brother that he is, step up to the plate and do whatever he has got to do to help his sister. Whatever it is Mariah is supposedly not doing shouldn't effect what he can do for Alison. Going to the press blasting Mariah isn't going to help Alison and his sorry ass knows that. Morgan's sole purpose for going to the press was to get paid and hurt Mariah. He really should be ashamed of himself. No grown self respecting man would do that to his baby sister. Obviously Mariah cut him off financially 6 years ago after they had their falling out. Morgan stated himself that Mariah has given Alison thousands of dollars throughout the years. Mariah's people reported that each time Alison went into rehab, Mariah paid the bill. Like Ribbon said, perhaps this time around Mariah has set conditions. All this talk about family helping family. Please. Family can be your own worst enemy. Throw your ass to the wolves and watch you get eaten up alive then at wanna fall out at your funeral. Please.

Happy Sunday, just sharing one of the best live recorded concerts I have ever seen. Wow, for Mariah to be able to perform her set list with this great group. Here is Chaka in 2011 slaying her hits. Sheila please listen to her "Through The Fire" and "Angel". Wow, this is in 40 years in, such a feat. Oleta Adams has a great version of "Get Here" online, also performed with this great orchestra. Such a beautiful way for amazing singers to showcase their voices. This orchestra is so tight with their arrangements, absolute professionals.
