That black dress (53,416)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
The black dress she wore in the picture with Rita, wow. She should have worn that to the BBMAs. I know I said I'd like her to wear some other color but that dress is perfection, sexy and classy at the same time with a little bit of edge because of the material around her chest. It fits her perfectly and she looks really good in it. I hope she has some good outfits picked for tomorrow. Her appearance will be as important as her singing because she's going to be the focus tomorrow (with all the talk about the 15 minutes being dedicated to her).

Defending Mariah (53,414)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I agree with Licia that we don't have to defend our choice of loving Mariah to anyone. I come from a country where many people don't even know Mariah. The very few that know her either don't like her (because what they read and also they think she is only about cheesy ballads) or are casual listeners. They don't realize that she has an extensive catalog touching on almost every genre of music possible and that her ballads are anything but cheesy. There are very few who actually like her and few of them are my recruits too haha. (I made them listen to her songs and only then did they realize that her voice is phenomenal.) Anyways I have never felt the need to justify my love and devotion towards Mariah. Same with MJ. I used to be bullied for being an MJ fan but not once did I pretend to not be a fan to please people. MC and MJ are the only artists I am this dedicated too and I don't care if others cringe at me when I say this. I am a lamb and I am proud. I will not give explanations to anyone who thinks less of these two legends. Yes Mariah had many bad live moments, but she is still much better on her worst day than most singers in their best days.

I'm so sorry about the show cancellation. I agree the situation could have been handled way better. While it's good they offered you all refunds, I think they should have just let as many of the people who bought tickets from that date into another show since they were not going to reschedule. To make them rebuy tickets for another date (which may or may not be sold out) was ridiculous. I hope you still somehow enjoyed your birthday.

I'm not going in to the Mariah/Whitney debate. At their very best both killed. My question is why do you feel that you have to defend Mariah? I've seen you say this more than once and it makes me cringe. I too have people around me who love to bash Mariah any chance they get. They can't wait to say something when she messes up. I could care less what they say. If they ask me why she sounded bad, my reply is "Ask Mariah." I've found that people who talk bad about her are going to say something bad regardless of if she did good or bad. You don't have to defend why you love her music and you surely are not required to defend her if she messes up. If it was bad, say it was bad and move on. If it was good and they still think it was bad, say you liked it, move on, and then blast your favorite Mc song loud (preferably while they are in the room with you). I get your frustration with her not so great performances. I just don't get why you feel you need to prove anything to the people around you.

Mariah vs Whitney (53,411)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
I asked my vocal coach about this and he gave me an essay lol, hope it'll help. (I copy pasted this.) Low notes: Mimi wins. Mimi has a more extensive support of her lower register, even down to the 2nd octave. Both have great lower registers, but Whitney's C3s aren't that good. Mimi can support her F2s but sometimes has larynx problems at C3s below. Belt: Tie. Mimi has more ease at notes higher than F#5 than Whitney because Mimi can place her voice in the head at higher notes, plus she's a light lyric coloratura soprano. Lyric voices have easier access to higher notes. Whitney is a spinto soprano, which has more vocal weight. Also, she can't place her voice in the head in higher notes, so she doesn't belt well above F#5/G5. But Whitney belts with more resonance than Mariah, although both can resonate well. Head voice and falsetto: Whitney wins. She has a more developed head voice, which is why her head voice sounds operatic. Mimi does give her a run for her money in this area tho. Both are well-rounded vocally, aside from the very few problems. The reason why Mimi can't give live performances constantly is her nodules. Nodules are evil to the vocal cords. She should've removed those nasty stuff.

Mariah vs Whitney (53,410)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
I asked my vocal coach about this thing and he gave me like an analysis on their vocal technique. Hope it'll help. (I just copied this from our chat lol.) Lower notes: Both are great, [...]. But Mariah takes the lead on this one, having a more extensive range in this area. Mariah can support notes in the second octave with ease and resonance. Whitney also has a good lower register, but Mariah edges her with her ease. Belt: It's a tie. Both mixes their voice very well, resulting in their great belts. However, Mariah has a bit more ease in the notes above F#5 since she's a light lyric coloratura soprano which has a lighter voice. Light lyric and full lyric voices can reach higher notes due to their lighter vocal weight. Whitney is a spinto soprano in her prime, which has more volume and weight to her voice. This results in her having to put in a bit more effort in higher notes. Plus, Whitney placed her voice in her mask all the way to her highest belt, which is the ideal placement in the lower to mid belts, but not for the upper belts. Mariah can place her voice in her head, resulting in more ease in the higher belts. However, Whitney balances Mariah in belting as she belts with more resonance than Mariah (both can resonate to great volumes, especially in their prime).

When You Believe at the Oscars (53,409)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Well after reading the comments I watched the performance again. I suppose we all see things differently. In my opinion Mariah wasn't "slayed" by Whitney and I certainly didn't see this "help me" look Mariah supposedly gave the audience. What a load of rubbish. The performance was great, both ladies sang beautifully with respect for each other. Neither tried to out do the other. I guess I should be grateful that we had two days of positive messages on this fan site when Vegas opened. Silly me for thinking it would last. Back to ragging on Mariah like we always do. (Rolls eyes.)

Whitney may have oversung Mariah at the Oscars, but that was only after Mariah murked Whitney on the Oprah performance of When You Believe (look it up). I can name many good Mariah performances post her vocal prime that were far from embarrassing. The cringe worthy embarrassing moments have really been more recent not everything since 97. Lets just be hopeful that her nerves doesn't get the best of her this time. I think she is in a confident pretty good place vocally at this time.

Looks like MC is getting something (53,406)

There's a leaked schedule and after her performance is Celine/Kelly segment. It's a presentation so I assume that they're gonna do a spill of some sort about MC. I hope she's getting something and plus these two divas have been amicable with MC. They talk about each other or reference each other lately so it looks like good news.

I have to agree that Whitney did slay Mariah in that performance although I don't think she meant to, but Whitney did her thing. That would've been one performance I wish Mariah would be sleeping all the week and vocal rest. It's the Oscars dahling. Still, it was a nice moment they shared as the ultimate divas.

Live performing divas (53,404)
by Marcus from Brazil
| |
|
|
Whitney's voice wasn't shot after '95. She delivered stellarly in the "My Love Is Your Love" era, and then again on her greatest hits album. Her voice deteriorated rapidly after 2001. Mariah's voice declined right after she started promotion for "Butterfly", it was painful watching her struggle gasping for air since to me she was the diva with lungs of steel before that. She regained her range and power for "Glitter" though, I was pleasantly surprised at her delivery on this album. Mariah is definitely a better overall musician than Whitney, but we should recognize that in the "live department", taking into consideration the years they were performing before their voices started to decline, Whitney trumps Mariah. Mariah wins hands down on being no only a vocalist but a lyricist and producer. Whitney maintained her voice for about 15 years before crack took its toll on her voice, Mariah had only being in the business for 6 years and just on world tour. So it pains me to say it, but Whitney evidently was a better live performer than Mariah, the proof is on YouTube. I love Mariah more, but the truth shall be told.

This is a futile undertaking (53,403)
by Randy from USA
| |

|
Abraham, Jake, B and whoever else, I could invite all of you over my house for a day of YouTube year to year comparisons. Then it would make sense. It's difficult to argue live performances when you're confined to words. On a side note why was MC looking at the audience with a help me look instead of outsinging Whitney B? I'm giving up on this argument because I can't defend my position as I would like due to the limitations of this board and our distances. But if you are ever in Atlanta, I could show you what I mean. I'm not one to offer generalizing, sweeping statements if I don't have evidence. I'm going to just wait and see what happens this week. P.S. I am glad you all live in cities and have friends that are all pro MC and don't ridicule her when she sounds bad. As an MC fan things are hard for me in the A.

Love for MC (53,402)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Mariah, if you are reading this, blow me a kiss while you are performing at the BBMAs. Haha no, I just want you to really give it your best, get up on the stage and act like the legend that you are, sing your heart out and blow the audience away and remind them that half of them are in that room because once upon a time they happened to hear VOL which gave birth to a passion inside them to pursue the dream of becoming a singer. Don't get nervous, don't weird out because the cameras will be on you. Just slay them all, put the sword back in the holster (is that what they call the leather thingy that they put the sword in?) and stand there and watch people clap until their hands hurt. You can do it, we believe in you, it's time that you start believing in yourself. Sending love, hugs, and a bag of throat candies your way.

Luke, ya you have a good point there. I also vented in one of my post months back that I don't blame Mariah for dismissing Ariana and some others because I would be pissed too if people keep saying that someone will replace me especially when that person can just hit the whistle note and that's it, there is no more similarities between the too. Mariah is not only a singer, she is an established songwriter and producer and her voice is not only about the whistle, she had a gorgeous voice with such unparalleled versatility. Whereas Ariana squeaks her way through all her songs. Anyways, yes in that perspective "Emotions" is a better choice, I just thought "Someday" and "Infinity" have such a similar theme, it would be fun. But I don't mind her choice at all. Lee, I just went to the link again and now there are no songs listed besides Mariah. If she sings "Someday" tomorrow, I am taking full credit for it haha, no just joking. I don't care what she sings, I just want her to blow the audience away.

I actually took a visit to the wiki page you mentioned. Ummm not only is Ariana's name taken off the list but "Someday" is added to the songs M will be performing. How odd. I highly doubt that Ariana would be at the BBMAs, she's in Europe on her world tour. It would be nice to see M do the red carpet, sit in the audience, and doing a few selfies with Britney etc. but I kinda doubt it. Knowing M, she'll probably show up, sing, smile, say thanks, and ditch the whole thing being the elusive chanteuse that she is.

Two up tempos tomorrow? (53,397)

I really hope Mariah does something different with Infinity because Emotions is an uptempo and Infinity in someway is also considered an uptempo. It would be amazing if she strip out Infinity like TGIF that way it would contrast nicely with Emotions.

That's a great idea and Someday really does fit with Infinity, but remember how Ariana covered Emotions and it skyrocketed her into the spotlight and that was when the whole "Ariana is the new Mariah" stuff began? She never denied being a new Mariah and practically rode that wave on purpose. I'm not one to jump on fan feuds but to say someone is good to replace you when you're only 45 and still making brilliant music is insulting. This is why it's perfect for her to perform Emotions. Show everyone how it's really done, and live as well. She has been perfecting this song recently and has become brave enough to include the bold intro from MTV Unplugged. This is a smart move and a confident one. She will hopefully set the standard once again after all these years and basically tell everyone there is only one Mariah Carey.

Although it has probably already been decided that she'll sing "Emotions" and I am fine with that, but I think it would be awesome if she sang "Someday" instead. It goes with the theme of "Infinity". Plus that note at the end always gives me life. I would also love her doing the whistles over the ending chorus of "Heartbreaker" like the album version of "Heatbreaker". I absolutely love the ending chorus of "Heartbreaker". But that's asking for too much haha, so ya anyways, "Someday" and "Infinity" would have been perfect. Her introduction could be - Mariah: best selling female artist, more #1's than any solo artist and dissing ex-lovers since 1990s all the way to infinity. Haha.

There are loads of good Mariah perfomances after 1997. I'm shocked how you keep saying they're underwhelming and embarrassing. And honey, don't even talk about Whitney, becuase after 1995, her voice was weak af.

Whitney's voice after 94 was shot? Look at her Divas 99 or Arista's 25th performances. And let's not forget she murdered MC at the Oscars in 99. Crackhead or not, I wasn't cringing whenever she stepped on stage. And the only reason I hold out any hope for MC live anymore is because of the Jimmy Fallon impromptu performance which shut me and some of my MC bashing friends up. So let me ask you this, what is it that whenever on TV she can't do what she can do in front of fans alone? Because you got me hot. Name one performance where she got a standing ovation and there was no lip syncing? Have you noticed that "My All" and "Through the Rain" have no background singers on the song but whenever she performed either she had a wall of background singers? MC is many great things: songwriter, vocalist on wax, beautiful, classy, smart, great producer. Where she lacks for a diva of her caliber is "live performer at least where it counts. Watch what happens this week at Billboard, Jimmy and Kelly and Michael and we will see. I want to be wrong here but if history is on my side, I don't think I will be.
