I agree with Trox and Mimi for different reasons (54,011)
by Lee from USA

Beyoncé is overrated. But it is easy to be loved with Jay-Z as your husband and Al Sharpton and the NAACP in your back pocket. Everybody is scared to death of Jay-Z due to the fact he stabbed a dude and gotten off. Nobody wants to have Al Sharpton and a group of black folks picketing outside your business. Remember how TMZ called to Beyoncé as a "robo-ho"? Al almost blew a gasket, and yet he is never around when Mimi gets bashed.

Absolutely, Beyonce is a monster on stage, although having been to her concert, I have to say I expected more. The show was choppy and I didn't feel like the audience got to be part of it because of all the choreography but that was also due to the setlist and Jay Z performing his songs. I'm going to be honest, I went there to see Beyonce, not him lol. Prince is still the best performer I've ever seen. He had the ability to shrunk an entire arena and make it feel like we were in a club. It was incredible. I expected Beyonce to do the same. And her voice isn't bad, it's just not the best either. It can be jarring listening to her ballads, except the live versions of Listen. Oh, and her rendition of Take My Hand Precious Lord was simply unsettling. She can't sing songs like that, basically any song that requires actual human emotion. She's at her best when doing uptempos, she has the perfect voice for songs like Freakum Dress. I also don't understand why she's decided to just sing about screwing now. I'm so glad Mariah doesn't do that because it gets old fast. Mariah actually has very few songs that have strong sexual innuedos. I love her for her personal lyrics. I can't think of any songs by Beyonce similar to Petals, Close My Eyes or Cry. I listen to Beyonce almost strictly only when exercising. I know it sounds like I'm hating on her, I actually do like and enjoy her but I just don't understand why she's worshipped so extensively and blindly.

Your post were spot on about the overrated Beyonce, sorry, I'm not a hater. Beyonce's career is so drama free and calculated. She is always kind to other female singers. And I know why, she has no wannabe singers that looks or sound like Beyonce. Mariah is always, been linked to other singers (J.Lo, Christina, Jessica Simpson, Leona, Ariana). But there is more, because Beyonce is black (sometimes). She is like the black female singer that the media needs, to be politically correct. That's why she is so overrated at the Grammy's. When need to give this black women a Grammy, so the world can see we are not racist at the Grammy's. Mariah is biracial, and that's not easy to classify. Mariah's career had many public dramas, like the label thing at Sony, breakdown, two divorces. That's why I'm always supportive to MC. She writes and produces her own material, sings her lungs out of her body, and still so underrated.

The problem (54,008)
by George Golden from UK
| |
|
|
The problem is Mariah not been able to change her sound. Infinity is not the type of music someone of Mariah's status should be releasing at this point in her career. She needs big uptempo numbers with producers like Pharrel. If she wants to stay relevant she needs to step out of her comfort zone. Why was Infinity praised as her next number one before it came out?It seems to be the case for the past five singles she released in the past. I don't think she should retire its just too soon, I think she has got so much more to give. The reason she lost most of her fan base is because she is insisting on being just an rnb artist than a pop star. She has really boxed herself. I just pray for a redemption before it's too late.

Beyonce / Vegas (54,007)

Are we really gonna hate on Beyonce now? You may call her overrated, over exposed, pretty perfect image but the girl delivers. She's an amazing performer and she works hard for it. Too rehearsed, I rather that than Mariah being under rehearsed. That's the tea. Things like Beyonce ain't the brightest, ummm, I don't think Britney is either. And I love me some Britney and glad to see her doing her thing. One thing Mariah can learn from Beyonce though is how to properly lip sync because she has it down haha. Beyonce should just announce her Vegas residency and shut all this mess up, that would be funny. While I don't see Mariah doing any female collaborations anytime soon, it would be cool (and unlikely) to see her work with Celine, JLo, and Britney on a Vegas commercial. Imagine something like backstage and diva antics, like a "come see us in Vegas" moment. It would finally put an end to some feuds.

Yup. It's actually pretty ironic that Beyonce gets praised for the diva image Mariah gets hated for, yet up-close and personal Beyonce comes across as a bland woman who doesn't have anything that interesting or deep to say, and behind Mariah's diva image there is an intelligent, knowledgeable and vulnerable woman with an incredible life story and an incredible talent, who has this body of work that in so many ways is truly groundbreaking. When all is said and done, Mariah will be the last one standing as the most influential female artist of all time. I'm not saying it's all Mariah, she has a hard-working team behind her as with any star and she has collaborated with other talented people and together they've created music that will stand the test of time. But she's not lying or exaggerating when she says she writes or co-writes her own material, the lyrics, and melodies as well as the music, plus she produces. Many of the brilliant ideas for using different samples and doing certain cover songs came from her. She was the one who wanted to collaborate with ODB, Boyz II Men and Jay Z, it wasn't a marketing thing where a collabo between two artists is only done because it's hot for the moment, like J.Lo and that Iggy whatshername doing that booty song. First of all, that song is crap (why they keep comparing J.Lo and Mariah is beyond me, there is no comparison in terms of talent or the music they do) but there's also nothing organic about that at all.

Wow. Beautifully stated Otti. Some people really don't have the capacity to discern between realtalk and backtalk. Somehow they always manage to back the ones who backtalk Mariah. I wonder why that is. Nah, I really don't wonder, but let's pretend I do. L.A. Reid is clearly on Team Mariah or he wouldn't have signed her on to the record label. Already there is an album out and another bearing up for rerelease. He did the same thing when she was looking for a new home in 2002. So anything he says in that context should be viewed in good light because he has proven hat he believes in her artistry when others have written her off. It's not complicated in the least. JD has personal issues with L.A. Reid and it's not right for him to use Mariah to express any frustrations or unresolved feelings he might still harbour towards his former boss. Fingers crossed that it's all a big joke because I hate to think MC has this many disloyal people around her or that the anti-Mariah agenda is this effective. It pisses me off that I even have to mangle my own sense of logic and common sense to keep from believing the nonsense Mariah has to endure on the daily. I can't imagine what it must be like to be the target of all this baseless hate and pure evil intentions that someone of her status attracts simply by existing. Anybody who says Mariah is weak, lazy, ditzy etc. is stupid. This woman has the strength of 10 Samsons, the patience of a pearl, the heart of an angel and the mind of a believer.

Yeah, I do agree. It seems crazy to me how overrated Beyonce is. 20 Grammys. Really? It seems so unfair. And I do agree her music will sound really dated years from now, and her tone as a vocalist isn't the most pleasant one. You can't relax listening to her, it's kinda strange. Her voice and songs aren't soothing. But I have to say she became a better vocalist in the last few years, her last album is a little bit stronger in that sense. I just don't get it why she became so big in the industry. The worst part for me is her lyrics. She has a extremely poor speech, poor diction, poor lyrics and poor grammar. But this is kinda the elephant in the room, nobody talks about it. The girl needs to return to school and learn how to write and talk better. The only thing Beyonce does better than Mariah is stage performance. She is a really good stage performer. She can carry a audience pretty well. I'll give her that. Mariah is not that good in terms of live performances.

Tiina, I can't even pick one line in your last post that I don't agree with. Great post really. The ridiculous number of Grammy awards, the cringe-worthy hot-for-now lyrics, the rehearsed-to-perfection moves. Makes me more sad for Mariah now. All that talent and yet so underrated, I'm glad I found Mariah. Her worst/weakest songs are 1000 times better than what the hottest current stars put out. I almost feel bad for people who never got to hear the gems in MC's discography. Her most popular singles are definitely great but there are greater songs hidden in the albums that most people will never get to hear.

I would like to see this happen. It's mean to say MC shouldn't duet with her because Britney is struggling in her career. I'm sure most of you will roast people if they say people shouldn't duet with Mariah because MC's career is struggling. I think Britney and MC would make an amazing song, their sounds are so different with Britney being full on bubblegum pop and Mariah being the R&B hip hop queen. I vote yes for this.

Forget even the "feminism", photoshopping and all the propaganda she uses to maintain this unreal flawless I-can-do-it-all-image, Beyonce hasn't released a good album since her first solo effort, yet she has like, what, over 20 Grammy Awards? And Mariah, who does write her own material and has had an enormous effect on both the popularized singing style and emerging of genres, has her 5. It's a joke. Can you even imagine listening to, say, Beyonce's latest studio album, which earned her yet another 3 Grammys, in 20 years without cringing? All those catch phrases may be trendy right now but they will sound so dated in already a few years, let alone a few decades. Mariah has given us great quality albums consistently for 25 years. We will still be listening to her latest studio album in 20 years and marvel at her songwriting and voice. Speaking of voice, while she has a great range and control, Beyonce's tone is not the most pleasing. Even Christina Aguilera has a better tone. And don't even get me started on Beyonce's overuse of unnecessary melisma. Makes me dizzy just thinking about it. To me she's an all-around good entertainer but she's not a singer's singer. She still performs as if she's taking part in a beauty pageant tho. Everything is choreographed. I mean everything. She literally does and says the same spiel night after night, even her exchange with her hubby feels creepily rehearsed. Behind this carefully crafted image is a talented but a pretty bland woman.

Britney Spears (54,000)
by Giselle #1 Mariah Critic from USA

I think it's mean of people to say Britney her voice is shot so MC shouldn't work with her. I don't find anything wrong with a Mariah/Britney duet, but given how Mariah is it won't happen. Britney is anxious? You're a lamb right? Touch My Body Mariah Carey would do very well with a Britney Spears. I also think it would do good for Mariah's I dunno artistic creativity. Working on another artists song gives her the freedom to express herself in other ways, which exposes herself to people who normally wouldn't be checking for her. Thus making her likable. Like Mariah some of you are in denial about her current state. Like radio play is going to fix everything. She still gets played satellite radio. I don't even know anyone who still listens to radio in 2015 and top 40 at that. Michael Buble gets zero play but still sells loads. Sade hasn't had a hit on top 40 in a long time. Madonna can still at least sell 100k, her tours always sell out. Toni Braxton and Baby Face won a Grammy yet didn't sell much nor have a huge hit. Nobody talks much about Mary J. flopping. Mariah lost a good chunk of her fan base post 2008 not because of music but because she changed. She's become the Aretha Franklin of today. Who was also known as a grade A diva supreme ball gown wearing unrelatable queen in her bubble who doesn't take her career serious anymore as she should.

Jeff Beacher. (53,999)

So according to Jeff, the video was supposed to be out last week. Mariah also said the video was supposed to be out right after Memorial Day, which means from her side the video was done. Plus she also went to Ellen to give a teaser, which I am sure was to hype it up because it was going to be released shortly. I am sure Brett didn't take long to finish it either. So it has to be someone from Epic blocking it. I don't know whose bright idea it was to not release it yet. What a waste to a video that was getting a lot of hype. After spending so long being anxious over the video and venting, I am now literally that emoticon, the one laughing but with tears falling down the eyes because I have gone a little cuckoo by now.

It could work. They are both brilliant artists who were unstoppable at their prime and have been through hell and back. Why shouldn't it work? Okay, I know this is a Mariah board, but I wanna spread some Britney love as well. I always feel like I have to defend her in a way. Yes, she isn't that much of a singer, and that pairing her with Mariah would be like pitting a kitten against a lion, but she does have something in common with Mimi and that is having an instantly recognizable voice. If your squeaky voice can still be discerned even when it's buried under tons of autotune, I mean, that's a gift. And people always overlook the fact that she is probably the best vocal actress out there. She does have a limited range, but she takes advantage of what she has by being able to match her way of singing to what the song requires. Anyone who has heard her entire catalogue can see that she's more than just a producer's muse. Plus she's got unparalleled charisma. So yeah, I also have a soft spot for her.

Thank you for the response. Yeah, I had a feeling it was rushed as well, which probably shows just how much they were pressed for time and maybe even were playing catch-up so that's probably why it doesn't sound as polished as the rest of the album. And yes, that taste of what it could've sounded like in the remix just shows how much more potential it could have had to be a hit single. Heck, that Fireckracker sample is even immediately catchier than the samples used for Honey and Heartbreaker in my opinion. Such a wasted (stolen) chance.

Me I am Mariah. The Misunderstood Chanteuse (53,995)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |

|
Mariah is definitely one of the most misunderstood public personalities in the world. Not just her behavior but her craft too. First of all the diva rumors/semi-truths. We know she likes the finer things in life and there is nothing wrong with it, she earned it, she can do whatever she wants with her money. People blow it out of proportions. Second, "MC is jealous of other female artists". People always focus so much on 2-3 female artists she has supposedly shaded but they don't speak a word when MC continuously praises other mainstream stars. In AI, while commenting, MC said Rihanna (who is so close to taking MC's record) is a worldwide superstar, she always praises Beyonce. Third, the music. I see a lot of people in comments sections of articles writing "can't stand her screeching voice" and all. Non-listeners probably think MC is always singing only in her whistle register or she always sings high haha. I think MC really uses the whistle register as a great icing rather than just showing it off. Like "Emotions was a song where she showed off her whistles" but in most songs MC uses it perfectly in places which adorns the songs beautifully. People didn't listen to songs like "Looking in" or others which are quite subtle yet delivers powerful messages. MC has such a diverse range of sounds and songs, but people generalize her songs based on just a view that they heard. There are a lot more, these are a few examples.

During the album release party held by Sony Music Indonesia titled "A Night to Infinity: A Tribute to Mariah Carey", our local talented singer, Melly Mono, covered three of Mariah's #1's single: Emotions, Dreamlover and Hero. She was a member of the Indonesian girl band called SHE and since last year had decided to pursue her own solo career. Melly stated Mariah Carey has been her own inspiration in singing. I completely agree with that point of view, infact I have always been thinking that. The "pseudo-feminism" thing. Always trying to come up with songs saying how women should embrace their natural beauty and body and then going ahead all over social media, photo shopping her "candid" photos all the time. Creating crazy thigh gaps that are so cringe worthy because we know she is naturally curvy (and might I add that the glorious curves are what really makes her sexy). Lightening her skin so much over the years. Why go out of your way to make yourself look like something you are not while telling others to do the opposite? Mixed messages all around. Then she had this image that she wants to keep her private life private (which I am fine with) but now she is so overexposed. Selling out her wedding videos and starting divorce rumors to sell tickets.

I love Mariah and Britney. They're probably my favorite female artist so I'd love to see them duet. Britney has been saying she wants to work with Mariah for 15 years. That's is so good to hear. Work it girl. I think Mariah is doing great. I love to see her taking care of herself again in all these different ways. If the woman wants gold leaf butterflies in her dressing room you better hurry up and get it done "now" son. "She has told backstage staff to prepare platters of only blue and purple-coloured foods, such as aubergines and blackberries, for her to snack on." Now that sounds healthy and yummy.

Thank you for showing me some love. Yeah, you're right Britney's fans are not "that" young anymore. She does have this "mainstream" sound type of thing going on though, but that doesn't mean that the duet would be successful. I still think that if those two went into the studio together it might be pretty cool. On the other hand it could be a disaster.

I don't see it happening, nor do I want it to. Britney's voice is shot. Her image is also in question because she seems like a very anxious shell of the woman she used to be and many people have picked up on it. Look at the comments of any video that she's been within the past couple years. There will always be a special place in my heart for Britney because she's a symbol of my younger years, but Mariah needs to stay on the winning team. Britney has her own career kinks to work out. If Mariah ever collaborated with another female singer I vote for Beyonce.

I don't like the idea unless there's some tracks that did not make it on the original. I'm confused first the greatest hits and now Merry Christmas. What's next? Emotions re-issued as a double album? If they want to get nostalgic do a Columbia anthology box set and load it with all seven albums and fan booklets. I don't know. I excluded Merry Christmas, it was made for the holiday season only, #1's because Sony already gave us a refreshed #1's and anything past 1999 because I'm not sure how someone can convince another label to release material that belongs to them such as Virgin and Island Def Jam.
