Lee / discussing the divorce (52,112)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah is known for her "do not discuss" list so I highly doubt that the divorce will be discussed on Kelly & Michael. Even though to me it is very awkward for her to have such a life changing process happen and for everyone to have to act like it doesn't exist, I think we have to accept that we're never gonna get the scoop on why this divorce is happening. This is not going to be like the Tommy Motolla situation where we can't get her to be quiet about it. Quite the opposite.

Ironically, the first time I heard "Someday" and "Love takes time" was on the "Number ones" album. AndI fell in love with these two songs. And they are still two of my favorites until this day. I love "Someday" lyrically and vocally. Lines like "one you gave away will be the only one you're wishing for" and "you're gonna pay 'cause baby I'm the one who's keeping score". And ofcouse the whistle note on the end. I hope she is gonna sing this song as a revenge. Haha. With "Love takes time" and "Someday" Mariah was far behind her time.

"Alone In Love" (52,109)
by Billy from Greece

Can we show this song some love? Such a gorgeous song. By far one of my favorite Mariah records. I think it sort of predicted her future or even "core" sound better than her more mainstream hits. It is also quite unique structure-wise, in terms of verses versus choruses.

Knowing Kelly, do you think she'll press Mariah to talk about her divorce? Will this be the first time Mariah speaks out? Hmmm.

I guess a lot of us want to hear Mariah singing again Love Takes Time, Someday and I Don't Wanna Cry. These songs are essential in her career and it's been many years without singing them. I can't wait to hear them.

I Identity with Mariah we both are multi-racial woman with fathers who abandoned us. I'm also very child/woman like her. I don't take life too serious and am a free spirit. We're also two very open minded black/Latin ancestry who love and accept everyone as they are. That's why I always loved MC. I'm really excited about what's to come, I'm feeling really good that our girl is going to kill it. I'm also glad that she's happy and doing her. looking forward to seeing her on Kelly & Michael and please for the love of the fashion gods, please slay us with the fashion and beauty this era. I want you to bring it and serve it. I also can't wait to finally hear "Someday" 2015 finally. That song Is going to mean something to Mariah. She better sing that like her life depends on it lol and like Nick is on that stage every night. Every time I hear him talk about her in a interview I imagine her singing this song lol.

Infinity music video (52,102)
by Ethan from United States
| |
|
|
Am I the only one who thought this video was filmed a while back? I don't think it was filmed over the weekend. I have a feeling it was shot at the beginning of this year during Mariah's visit on Ellen. MC is very elusive and secretive during this era, which I love instead of posing numerous pictures of recording sessions during the MIAM era. I can't wait until April 27 and May 24 for the #1 to Infinity residency.

Re: Jon (52,101)

I love the topic. I personally identify with Mariah in a more racial aspect. I am an Asian American, so while I was born and raised in the US, I am still seen as an "outsider" because I don't "look" American. Mariah's struggle to find an identity as a multi-racial kid growing up I completely identify with, because I also feel that "neither here, nor there" at times. I also think Mariah doesn't always get the credit she deserves in the media. Yes she's referred to as one of the greatest voices ever, which is totally deserved, but what she has been able to accomplish - as a multiracial woman - is incredible. She was a writer and producer from the very get go, and certainly had to fight for her place in a male dominated industry. If Mariah were a man, she would have earned that respect from the beginning. Instead, people still like to call her a "diva" because she is her own boss. The fact that she has been in the game for 25 years is incredible, in an industry that is notorious for a 5 year shelf life. She has outlasted many of her peers. No it hasn't always been smooth sailing, but in terms of celebrity problems she could be way worse. Lastly, Mariah has always been all about her fans. Even before it became a marketing gimmick, as all the artists now have their own special names for their fan base. And I think this nurturing instinct comes from both her songwriting capabilities and her difficult upbringing. At the end of the day, I am eternally grateful for her.

Can't Let Go / Vegas news (52,100)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I have listened to Can't Let Go probably more times than I have had hot dinners in my life. Today, whilst listening to my Emotions vinyl (sounds so good to me), for the first time in my life, I noticed the extra "you're all I know" Mariah whispers in the background in the last few choruses. How have I never heard this before? This is what is so great about her music. Decades after hearing her songs, I still notice nuances in the tracks I never had before. Does anyone else have similar stories? In other news, I was excited to read the Vegas show will have album tracks potentially performed. I think I would freak (caps) out (end caps) if she sang Prisoner live, complete with the rap. I am also really looking forward to hearing Someday and Love Takes Time again live, as she hasn't done them live since the Thanksgiving concert in 1993.

Memoirs was Mariah's least commercial album. MIAMTEC was a commercial album or it had commercial singles like #Beautiful, Faded, MILG, and Meteorite. She just didn't promote it because of professional and personal issues.

Mariah the veteran (52,094)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Not sure where the tipping point was, but I'm guessing it was somewhere between E=MC2 and MOAIA when Mariah had really accepted her status as a veteran artist who no longer has to prove herself worthy of attention because her achievements already speak for themselves in echoes. Up until E=MC2, it's as if her music had this certain undercurrent of calculation. After that, her output started to sound more loosely structured, like she was just making music for the joy of it. She doesn't sound like she's fishing for another #1 hit anymore. That's why her last 2 albums were also her least commercial ones. And I believe this self-awareness has led to greater artistic achievements. Unfortunately, this attitude has also spilled over to her performances and promotion. She's more inclined to winging it most of the time now, which has resulted in maddeningly inconsistent appearances. Her devil-may-care attitude has never been stronger. And sadly, it's a double-edged sword. So yeah, ideally, anyone who's having her first residency on Las Vegas should be practìcing less than a month before her opening night. But then again, she's Mariah, so...

Thanks for the interest Jon. My piece has not been published somewhere. It was my dissertation for my Master's some years ago. However, for starter's, do check Brett Farmer's article “The Fabulous Sublimity of Gay Diva Worship”. There is also a Master's thesis available online by Blake Paxton, entitled "My Bad Romance: Exploring the Queer Sublimity of Diva Reception" which covers an extensive bibliography on he topic (it is somehow akin to what I did also). Another article is by Andrew Milnes, called "Vamps, camps and archetypes: gay men, the diva phenomenon and the inner feminine". Great stuff.

Identification (52,089)
by Gilles from Malta

Hello everybody. As everybody I am as well very excited about the new Mariah single. As she is a real artist we are always excited to listen her new piece of art. I did read some really nice comments about identification that are really interested. I do not want to bring my science, but I have some knowledge about the process of identification. I strongly recommend to the people who are interested to read the book "The crowd" by Gustave le Bon. He was a scientist who did study people, the way that we work and how we identify to some identities as artists, leaders and etc. There are a lot of books regarding the subject by Freud, CG Jung, Friedrich Nietzsche and other therapists who did study human mind. Six days to wait for the new singlem it is for very soon.

Jojo just released a new buzz song for her new album. I would love to hear Mariah do a ballad like this. Jojo makes a modern ballad that sounds timeless. She straight bodied the vocals. What do you think?

Identification (52,087)
by Warrior Butterfly from USA

When I first became a fan it was the whistle register, my favorite version was the VMA in 1992. "Emotions" best rendition, better the track IMO. Anyway identification when I became a fan and started reading about her she came from hard knocks and raised above it, being the caretaker or adult of the family in her childhood and early years. She and I share a lot of common ground with that with exception of Mariah being extremely close to her mother, while I'm not. We are both "that woman-child". These lyrics particular always got me.
"Funny how one can learn To grow numb to the madness And block it away
I left the worst unsaid Let it all dissipate And I try to forget
As I close my eyes Steadied my feet on the ground Raised my head to the sky And though time rolled by Still I feel like a child As I look at the moon
Maybe I grew up, a little too soon"
Butterfly 1997 - Close My Eyes and the entire track off Rainbow 1999 - Petals. I didn't know that that kind of life could be articulated in this way. An when I found out she began writing "Close My Eyes" in 1993 I loved it more as a song because she really though about it and reflecting. Makes me wounder what else she's been crafting over time.

Shelly love, turtle dove? (52,086)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
In Swedish there is an expression: "Kärt barn har många namn", which directly translates to: "Beloved child has many names" in English. That's my way of saying, I can't remember you ever being truly unfair to me or Mariah or anyone else for that matter. You are such a congenial person and yet I always see you apologising for the smallest of imagined hurts you believe you may have inflicted on one of us more abrasive posters. I'm not sure if that's a flaw or just humility in its purest form? Well, actually I know it's humility and for that you get a gold star. But none the less stop apologising, at least to me. You have only ever amassed good will with me. We don't have to agree on every single thing for there to be a sense of harmony between us. Anyway, you get my drift. BTW, what is this business of Shelly vs Dove? Can one call you by both names or what?
