Infinity review Showbiz411 (51,909)
by Shezz from Pk
| |
|
|
Ok so I don't know what to make of this guy. One day he's bashing her, the next day he's praising infinity. I know Epic is going to promote the hell out of it but I wonder what they can do other than the April 27th Vegas launch as she has to be in Vegas rehearsing hopefully. Also I wonder if it would have been smarter for them to release it to radio earlier as was traditionally done so that the video and sales can boost its position further. The big release day numbers only come from the current popstars. If this song is worth it like we hope it is the general public will warm up to it gradually. Initial sales will be just lambs.

Infinity (51,908)

Carrying out my daily morning investigation of Infinity and savoring every little info (rumor or confirmed) about the song. We now have the name of at least one of the co-writers and a rumored story line for the song.

Does anybody else want a sonic sequel to Glitter? (51,906)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
As someone who loves 80's music to bits (new wave, new jack swing, time-stamped keyboard, blaring synths and that overall dark, seemingly empty, bottomless sound), I love the Glitter soundtrack. Based on some of those characteristics, my favorite upbeat track on that album has to be Didn't Mean To Turn You On. On the midtempo side, it would be Want You. Of the slow tracks, it's Lead The Way. And as much as I love Mariah's 50's-70's throwback songs (Your Girl, Circles, I'm That Chick, It's A Wrap, and Make It Look Good are my favorite songs off her most recent releases), just the other day, I heard a new song by, of all singers, Carly Rae Jepsen (yes, weird, I know) that has me wishing Mariah does an 80's inspired album again. Carly's All That is giving me some 80's quiet storm realness right now (think of the slow jams from Janet's Control album). Of course that's mostly thanks to the brilliant production by Blood Orange, but I guess that's the point. Maybe Mariah should break away from her comfort zone. Seek out less known up-and-coming producers (the way she does rappers). That will freshen up her sound even more. I personally would want her to release a lush atmospheric album like Jessie Ware's Devotion or Tough Love someday, as I feel her voice would fit such sophisticated sound like a diamond-studded glove, but if that doesn't happen, I'd just wish she would be more open to working with producers no one would ever expect her to work with.

Uptown down (51,905)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Another one bites the dust. If I haven't commented for a while, it's probably because I was worried that Uptown Funk would match One Sweet Day's record. Haha. Keyword, though is "match". But I actually love Uptown Funk. I thought for sure that it would take a longer time for any song to match, let alone surpass the staying power of Blurred Lines, but when I first heard UF, I felt that of all the #1s released since Rolling In The Deep (which I believe underperformed), it had the best potential for longevity, and it did. Two interesting things: 1) Three of the most recent chart-toppers that were able to stay on top for at least 10 weeks were all throwback tracks (Happy being the third one). Throwback is still in. 2) What is it with week 14? It's like the spot where all One Sweet Day-wannabes go to die. (Sadly, even We Belong Together suffered from this weird "curse" of some sort.)

Showbiz411 / One Sweet Day (51,903)
by Lee TS from USA
| |
|
|
So Roger from Showbiz described the song as fun and amusing and a "very top 10" potential. From that I like to believe it's a fun uptempo jam that can fly for the summer airwaves haha. Like you guys I'm so thirsty for Infinity, I hope it does well and brings M back to the top. And yes, happy OSD held onto its crown.

Vegas arrival (51,902)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
I read on Idolator the details of Mariah's Vegas arrival. "Mariah will be making an arrival in front of the fountains at Caesars on Monday, April 27 at 6 PM to greet visitors and fans ahead of the launch of her #1's hits show. Not only that, she'll be celebrating the premiere of the song and music video for her forthcoming #1 To Infinity lead single, Infinity. Limited areas will be designated solely for cameras to ensure best placement for capturing visuals of arrival." Hopefully Mariah's premiering the single there means we'll get a performance of it that night.

Pre-order bonus idea for next album (51,900)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
If she didn't want to give away any of her unreleased songs as a bonus, she could include a CD or DVD of her performing four or five songs from the album instead. With just her and an accomponist. Maybe at her house so that it feels more intimate. Just an idea, in case MC's promotional team is reading.

MC is fearless (51,899)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
If you want good things to happen, you have to expect good things to happen. Mariah Carey is fearless. She isn't afraid of failure or success. When she is working, she is the hardest working person in the industry. Her last album was excellent. That was her job as the artist and she came through. I don't blame her for not wanting to be in the spotlight 24/7 during her separation. There were rumors that her former label didn't give her a budget for promo. At first I thought she should spend her own money to make videos, pay for airplay, etc. But I changed my mind. Why should the label make money from her album when she's the one taking the risk and making a personal investment? I would have left and found others who believe in me too.

Infinity's surprise release (51,898)
by Ethan from United States
| |
|
|
I wish Mariah drops this single and music video next Monday, April 20 because of it will give some time to debut on the charts or with the fans' help it might debut on #1? I'm just concerned about the competition of summer songs that will be releasing soon. At the end of the day, there are a lot of expectations but it's all about the music. How many #1 songs out there that sound like crap? And how many non #1 songs out there that score a lot of awards and classics. It'd be great for Mariah to get another #1 and we all hope it will be great.

Poor Mariah (51,895)
by Jon from Netherlands
| |
|
|
Everybody expects so much from her. This next song is already expected to be number 1. How that woman can remain somehow grounded and still enjoy the business is a testament to her personality. It's been too long on the spotlight, too long living under tremendous pressure. She should hold the record for the person that's been able to keep it relatively together under such stress. Others have developed a bitchy personality but Mariah seems to be light hearted despite it all. Patricia Carey should get an award. Baby said a few days ago that Mariah was the hardest working person in the industry. That hasn't been true for years but still people expect her to be the 20 years hold Mariah that was eager to prove herself. Maybe she's been telling us lately that she doesn't want to be that Mariah anymore but we just don't listen. Fortunately she's still motivated to make music.

Infinity (51,894)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
So by now it seems like Sony thinks that Mariah may get her 19th #1 from Infinity. The fact that Infinity is the only new track on the #1's album kind of shows that they don't think they need a second track to bridge Mariah's career over to the next era. Plus a lot of thought must have gone into finalizing this song as the perfect one to be Mariah's rebirth or the song worthy to kick off/solidify Mariah's 25th year in the business. All these kind of makes me wonder even more about what this mysterious song really sounds like. It must be really that good for both Mariah and her label to think it's a hit. I wonder what promotion plan they have for it. Her show will start just a few days after the single debut. So I was curious what their promo plans looks like. I also wonder what the single cover will be. Yes I am wondering a lot nowadays. April 27th seems years away.

OSD (51,893)
by Giselle #1 Mariah Critic from USA
| |
|
|
Honestly, I don't want her record to be broken but records are meant to be broken. It would of stung more if it were a Rihanna pop toaster oven hit. But "Uptown Funk" is such a great record and is giving me all kinds of "The Time and Prince"'real ness. I'm hoping Mariah can hold on to that record for 1 more year, next year. March 16th is the 20th anniversary since it finished at 16 weeks and made chart history. That's a long time, even 19 is a long time for a record but 20 is better. Oh and thank you caption obvious on Someday. Hey Bianca.

Can't take away OSD record (51,891)
by ktktkt from Philippines

Yes. OSD's record is still safe. Even if UF rebounds, still 16 weeks consecutive lead is the record to beat. Mariah must be singing "happily". "They can try but they can't take that away from me." *whistles*

I do wonder if the people that were lucky enough to see Mariah live in the beginning knew that they were witnessing the birth of a legend. The audience at the MTV Awards, when Mariah performed Emotions, clearly understood that she had just accomplished a vocal feat that most likely will never be duplicated.

I knew last week that Bruno's run would be over this week. I never even entertained the notion that Uptown Funk would break One Sweet Day's sixteen week record. I know how you feel, Abraham. The wait is killing me. I want to hear this single today.

Music Box tour / "Vanishing" (51,885)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Several years ago, I downloaded a live version of "Vanishing" from the Music Box tour. I listened to it, I adored it, but I did not revisit it that often. I am now looking at various clips from the same tour and it's like being in front of a gold mine. Especially now that it's been more than 20 years, you realize even more clearly that the woman is not only a national but a global treasure. When we talk about real music, you know, real music that matters, voices that will last a lifetime such as Ella Fitzgerald's, Sarah Vaughan's, Whitney's, you cannot not include Mariah. It's like listening now to concerts by Sarah Vaughan recorded in the late 1950s or early 1960s and you wonder if the people in the audience then were aware of the legendary moment they were experiencing. I wonder the same thing about the people that attended those early concerts of Mariah, or those that went to the MSG 1995 concert, for instance. When the legend of the artist is established something changes. It's still magnetic, but it's the mystique of the early years that leaves you wondering and marvel at the rare treasures that YouTube offers us now.

Mariah (51,884)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |

I am imaging this scene (Mariah's reaction to the news of Bruno Mars falling to #2). MC standing with a champagne flute in her hand, she looks at the screen with the headline "No record for Uptown Funk", she raises her eyebrows while shrugging and says "They try but fail, every darn time." Then she takes a sip of the champagne, turns around and walks away singing slowly under her breath "uptown funk you up, uptown funk you up".
