Jermaine Dupri (50,643)

I guess Jermaine's feud with Mariah about being her manager didn't end their friendship. He posted to his twitter: "In the studio all night with Mariah Carey." I don't really care if Mariah works with Jermaine or not, but I am glad that their 20 year long friendship/partnership wasn't ruined.

My mistake (50,641)
by Amber C from USA

Im sorry for even bringing up The Beatles. Lol. But my Beatles talk stemmed from my post about the #1s. When I referenced Mariah and The Beatles in the same sentence I was referring to the #1s. I don't mean to personally attack anyone. Tbh I keep fellow board members names in my head, but when I get to wrting the message I discard names. Please stop getting offended and if you aren't cool. I put love in everything I write for the love of Mariah.

Thank you Abraham. Andrew, Yes. Edward, maybe you're right. I honestly don't watch her show and have only seen some of the clips recently. The MC interview from 2005 is one of my favorite MC interviews. I watched the radio interview wITH Whitney on YT but I don't know what she had said about WH before or after. I watched the clip with the crocodile tears and it seemed sincere to me, but maybe I see it that way because I don't know the whole history. WW doesn't seem that bad. I think she says things for ratings but I don't think she actually has malicious intent.

Shelly, it's nice to see another member showing love and appreciation for The Beatles. Abraham, I also love Earth, Wind And Fire, Chicago, Journey, Bee Gees, etc. I love most anything from the '70s, though I am a millennial. Haha. And finally Andrew, I used to find your posts very offensive. Your posts have an abrasiveness, heavy sarcasm, and sometimes outright antagonistic flavor. I never responded to them, though I was tempted to call you a "hater" more than once. But now I'm beginning to see that you truly are a fan with a good head on your shoulders. You appreciate Mariah, but you're not chugging the Butterfly KoolAid. You want her to succeed as much as anyone else on this board, but you're not afraid to call her out on the weird things that have been going on lately, to put it mildly. I don't always like the things you have to say, or the way that you say them, but I feel that you are at heart someone who's on team MC. I'm in the NYC area if you are serious about meeting up with lambs in December. I'll definitely be watching if she does a second Annual "Night of Joy and Festivity". And don't worry, I won't be frothing in the mouth from drinking too much Butterfly.

The Beatles and Mariah Carey (50,638)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
In my opinion Mariah Carey and The Beatles have had more impact on popular culture than Elvis. Elvis was a good looking white guy singing black music. If Mariah had been a man she wouldn't have been accused at the start of her career of being a white girl trying to sound black. It's sexism. Mariah's career mirrors Elvis' in many ways. Both had flop movies that caused career slumps and both made huge comebacks. Unlike The Beatles and Elvis, Mariah has an otherworldly voice. Her voice is a gift from God. Instead of complaining about the decline of her voice we should celebrate her voice. Her voice is still untouchable. Even in it's current state. By the way, I like The Beatles and Elvis. I hope Rhianna doesn't break or tie MC's record or The Beatles because when that happens I will lose faith in humanity.

Amber C, we got off on the wrong foot. Clearly you're miffed, since you're referencing me on your post as "someone... offended by" your post rather than just address me directly by name. I'm not even going to respond to your "rebuttal" with the eyeroll emoticon, "darling". You are entitled to your views, and perhaps I shouldn't have singled you out. I honestly wasn't sure if you were joking about The Beatles. Like I said, they're not my favorite, so I wasn't offended by anything you said - just taken aback by the flagrant disrespect. I know that this is a Mariah messageboard, but I wasn't under the impression that we're free to diss and make fun of other artists here for no apparent reason. The last thing I have to say on the subject is that I love Mariah. I'm obsessed with her, so I am very much aware of her merits and accomplishments. Only time will tell if she can truly eclipse The Beatles in the modern pop canon, so I hope that 50 years from now, she will be celebrated and her music will live on just like the Beatles. I think she has a shot, especially with AIWFCIY being a perennial favorite.

Shelly / Wendy Williams / The Beatles (50,635)
by Edward from USA

|
|
I know The Beatles through my father who is an avid fan. Growing up I was exposed to "Let It Be", "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "Yesterday", "Love Me Do", "Twist and Shout", "Drive My Car", and my father didn't even know how to speak English, that's how legendary and influential The Beatles were. Apart from the aforementioned songs, I tried to listen to their back catalog, but I couldn't get into any other songs besides those. Maybe it is a generation thing, but I won't put them down either to elevate Mariah. Mariah doesn't need that, she's an icon, and just like The Beatles she's brought her own influence to the music scene. Shelly, the day after Whitney died, Wendy Williams tried to pull some crocodile tears that were so insincere I almost slap her with her own wig. It was if she was pushing them out, so dishonest and for the show. She made Whitney's passing about her. I don't hate Wendy, but she is phony and goes with the flow, and one must be careful with people that go with the flow for they tend to be double-faced, and would sell you for a dime in the blink of an eye. So, Mariah shouldn't ever go to her show, she's been very vicious towards her.

Shelly, so in response to the question posed I can truncate your message into one word: "yes". If I spot some fairies I'll ask them for some help just in case your faith and power of belief and other nonsense doesn't break its seven year hiatus. Let's agree to disagree? Mariah is the only person who can change Mariah's fortunes. The media will report "anything" sensational. If Beyonce or Ariana had been churning out the performances that Mariah has done so recently, their asses would have been handed to them twice as fast. In response to Nikki's message: there's a massive difference between what was required on the Daydream tour (totally live, six octave range, belting elastically whilst moving about the stage like she owned the motherf*cking thing) than what was required on The Elusive Chanteuse Show (lip-syncing anything "chest" outside of one octave, ad-libbing over pre-record blah blah). You can count the clouds in the sky for all the relevancy it has. The comparison you made would seem to be a slight manipulation.

Cgee54, thanks for posting the Charmbracelet interview (50,578). I don't think I had ever seen that one. Lee, thanks for posting the Celine Dion documentary from the OWN network (50,583). CD mentioned she moved to Vegas 22 days before opening night, so that made me feel better. MC still has plenty of time to prepare. There were more pictures of MC in that brown dress on Twitter and she looked great. I love the DFAU throwback look.

I like the original recordings because they’re the ones I grew up with (and am used to) but some people appreciate their songs more when they are sung by better vocalists. I posted some links for you to hear and maybe grow a new appreciation for the Fab Four. Let It Be, Across The Universe. Also listen to Happiness Is A Warm Gun, it was kind of making fun of the shoop, shoop songs that were popular at the time. And Back In The USSR is making fun of California Girls by the Beach Boys. The first Beatles album I ever heard was Abbey Road and I think that's a good place to start. Give them another chance.

Andrew, that sounds like a plan, for many reasons: growing up I never had anyone liking Mariah (I come from Portugal and the lady is not big there, except during WBT) and I was never lucky enough to see her in concert. I really want to see her this year but on the Christmas shows. I say we do it. Would be great to meet other Mariah fans.

Wendy Williams / interviews (50,629)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
This has been on my mind for a few days but I didn't want to post it because I knew it would be controversial. I think Mariah should let Wendy Williams interview her again. Even though Wendy says a lot of shady things, and is super nosy, I get the feeling she's actually a really good person and a big fan of MC. Someone mentioned that she used to always talk badly about Whitney and then when she died she was crying about it. I watched it and it seemed sincere. The interviews with Wendy have been the best because they have shown the real Mariah. I like the proper, PC interviews she's done too. I actually didn't hate the Breakfast Club interview. It showed a different side of her.

MIAMTEC (50,628)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
If the rumors are true, that Mariah saved the best of her material, then she's got a hit or two on her hands or under her glove. MIAMTEC was a great album that she didn't promote because of personal issue and most likely issues with the label that we weren't privy to. Mariah's legacy will remain intact because of her voice and her prolific songwriting. She has written two back to back Songs of the Decade. She also scored a #1 every year of the 90's. I don't think her voice is damaged or ruined. She publicly addressed the Tokyo debacle on Ellen, she was clearly sick and now we know she was. MIAMTEC was not a flop. It sold over one hundred thousand copies with no promotion or single during a year that only one album went Platinum. The media blew that out of proportion.

Abraham, bite your tongue. The Beatles are the only other act that I have consistently listened to since I was young and their music never gets old for me. Those songs came out half a century ago and they still sound fresh and innovative. They're not famous for having amazing singing voices, they're famous for the music. I can't understand people when they say they don't like The Beatles or that they're boring. To me that's like saying Mariah's music isn't good. Even today their music sounds way ahead of its time and like it came from another world.

They're legendary, no doubt about that. But I just can't get in their music. I like a couple of songs, but their work isn't my cup of tea. For the most part I find them boring. Mariah is on another league of her own. She's just as high with them and the rest of the other legendary music artists. I do believe she'll either tie or break their number ones record. She just needs a really good song.

"Mariah's releasing a new single, it's going to number one." We're using the power of visualization and our subconscious minds to take her new single to number one. That's why we make these types of statements. If a person believes that it might be possible, it will work. Only need a tiny bit of faith is needed for it to work. "Her contribution to popular music is more important than the contribution made by The Beatles." I think Amber was kidding with that post. "It's not her fault she gets disrespected, it's because she doesn't have a penis." IMO if she didn't wear such revealing clothes she would get much more respect. But maybe that goes for men too, the Rico Suave guy was also ridiculed. "People are manipulated by the evil media because she mimed well half the time." It's pretty obvious that if the media is on your side they cover up for you and report things in your favor. For example, I was reading an article about Jennifer Lopez, and the article stated, "Jennifer simply responded Britney because she dances." But when Mariah wished Ariana longevity on the Breakfast Club they made it out to be a diss. Other artists have made embarrassing mistakes but the media minimizes it.

Well not to discredit The Beatles but Mariah is the best (50,623)
by Amber C from USA
| |
|
|
But on the contrary, I still want to defend my point that Mariah is better than The Beatles. Her 1 head is stronger that all their 5 heads. Do you realize Mariah keeps songs away from industry people? Do you realize that Mariah wrote way more that 16 songs in the span of 2009-2013. We haven't heard the best of her lyrical genious darling. There were even rumours she was saving the best so that Def Jam wouldn't try to put it on Chanteuse. But that's just her lyricism. Her voice is #1 or #2 in our recent history. Tell me, are The Beatles in the top 10 of singers? Mariah's voice is an instrument on its own as well. And last but not least The Beatles were a political, governmental, cultural machine. They had everyone on their side. They were like Beyonce of the time. In the media's eyes they were the heroes. And then you look at Mariah. She is not the medias hero, or the one the government uses to get peoples attention, she's the people's diva. The people made her, she loves the people, and tbh nobody is letting her go.

Christmas concerts / MSG (50,621)
by Andrew from UK

|
Jon, I've booked Christmas off to go to NYC as I assume she's going to do the Christmas concerts there again. However, probably going to wait to see what happens in Vegas first before buying flights. The whole thing will be a couple of grand £€. I'd offer you to come with, but I fear there'll be a fatwa on my head from some of the people on this board and I wouldn't want you hit in the crossfire. In saying that there are actually a few sane cool Americans on here it may be fun to meet up with. And in saying that I'm not stating, as a nation, Americans aren't sane and cool, but like most countries you gotta pick and choose. The Dutch on the other hand... Meanwhile back at the ranch, Mariah should book out the Garden for her Christmas shows. It's Christmas. Surely she could fill it at Christmas. It would be global news. And that's kinda what she needs. Or do one in MSG, one at the O2 in London and one at Tokyo Dome. Would be immense. She could even have reindeer pulling her jet.

Just a thought (50,617)
by B from USA
| |
|

The reason why Mariah isn't consider a cultural touchstone like Elvis or The Beatles is because she's a woman. If a male pop star had set the records she did, pioneered the act of recording new vocals for remixes, and ushered in a new sound with the thug love duet he would be considered a cultural icon. Sexism at its finest. Mariah's legacy will remain in tact in if she fails completely in Vegas and never scores another hit. Aretha's legacy is still in tact and she hasn't scored a hit since 1998.

Fact (50,616)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
The Beatles scored their 20 #1's in a span of seven years. Mariah was able to maintain the momentum of her career for 18 years even after the Glitter debacle. She will one day be regarded in the same league as The Beatles. Why? Because like The Beatles she wrote her songs unlike Elvis. Elvis jumped from bandwagon to bandwagon to remain relevant.
