Re: Danny / lifestyle (48,983)

Initially, Mariah was in an interesting position because she was getting paid $2 per album where other artist's were getting paid 1. She also received an extra 50 cents per album sold for songwriting credits. Add up 100 million albums sold and that 250 million dollars. She would've received an additional 50 cents per album for the ones she also produced. Of course, this is before we count up tours, commercials, and vhs/dvd sales. Mariah shouldn't ever want for money. Glitter gave her a 20 million advance and then Virgin paid 28 million to buy her out of contract. That's 48 million for 1 year without accounting for her undisclosed multimillion dollar deal merger of Pepsi and iTunes. Yet, the first thing Mariah did was begin creating a new album even though she had no label at the time. It wasn't because she needed the money. She's a singer/songwriter at heart and that's what she does. I don't think Mariah will ever want for money. I think her "tour" was to pay her label back for her 4 million advance since they didn't make that back with her album. MC actually doesn't spend that much in respect to her fortune. People like Madonna and MJ had 20+million dollar homes. MC's most expensive is a 9 million penthouse, but she rents it. She could leave it at anytime. All of her other property is far less expensive. Mariah spends around 2 million per year on average from what I could gather. At the end of the day, Mariah makes that in interest alone.

So who was one of the warnings by Eminem? It wasn't actually Mariah, right? Yeah I know it sounds like her, but the voice on the track is too deep.

Does anyone know what happened to mariahdaily.com? I noticed that the last post about Mariah's "Live at the Pearl" album was deleted, and the site wasn't updated since the 18th of December. Does anyone have a clue why?

Mariah made $18 million for one season of Idol. She also writes her own songs which is a lucrative business so she's set for the rest of her life. Plus the Virgin deal and buyout.

Clean up (48,979)

The game has changed. Like I said, Mariah should work with singles. She can release two singles, one ballad, one up tempo urban/dance. With two videos (like [...] and [...]) These two video's had one theme. And wait, what's gonna work for radio? But first, lets be honest, Mariah needs to feel in a good place. We all know that's she is not comfortable with her self the last year. If I look back to 2013, when she was promoting #Beautiful, she was skinny and looking healthy, acting normal, giving inteviews. And now she looks so heavy and wears all the time long dresses. I love to see her feeling comfortable as long she is in this divorce and label thing. It's better to do nothing. Or it's gonna be worser than it already is. If she is gonna do something this year, she needs to clean up a little bit. And give interviews, talk to the people. Say something good. She is beautiful and talented. And with her [...] there is a lot to come.

You're right, I didn't think about that. Maybe when she beats The Beatles record next year she can get around that by releasing a new #1's album with really good live versions of all her #1's. The Greatest Hits from 2001 already includes Sweetheart, WYB, and ISB. If they would have included Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight on there that would have been perfect.

Greatest Hits (48,977)

If another Greatest Hits would be released it should include 2003-2014. Personally I would't mind The Singles 2003-2014 including tracks like Almost Home, 100%, Right To Dream and Bring It On Home. On the other hand I can already see the haters call such an album The Flops 2003-2014 and unfortunately enough there's more than a little truth in that. I will wait and see what is going to happen in 2015, I hope this anniversary will bring us fans some great things.

She cannot stop producing One's because Sony makes profit from it and it is Sony's sole decision. A GH would be very wise now but one that she could actually promote. She makes money from any compilation (for those who claim that there are many GH albums out there) but with a cleverly-released product she could prove that she has a heavy legacy to be proud of.

Danny (48,975)

Hi Danny. Well, I read an article that the artist Shakin' Stevens rakes in £250k per week in December because of his Christmas song. That's really the only song of his that sustained longevity. Mariah's AIWFCIY would eclipse that as it is far more popular and reaches across the globe. Plus, her other radio hits like Hero will bring in a steady stream of income due to the royalties she would be paid.

Do you think in this day and age Mariah is able to comfortably sustain her lifestyle? Sure she has made good fortune over her career and continues to generate income but I wonder if that is part of her drive especially now she has children. Her outgoings surely must be breaking even with her income now she isn't doing big sales. The tours are likely to help which might be a positive thing as we make expect a new album and a another tour in the following 12 months.

Abraham / retro (48,972)
by Edward from USA

Abraham, I also think that songs like "Mine Again", "Circles" and "I Wish You Knew" were pivotal in the success of "The Emancipation of Mimi". Mariah poured her soul in those songs. The retro 70's sound of the album attracted not only current and new fans, but older folks who enjoyed that type of music for the nostalgia. E=MC2 was an attempt to get as many #1's as they could, that was the concept L.A. Read had in mind, a collection of songs that could serve as singles, but the soul wasn't really there for me. MIAMTEC was more like TEOM, but the lack of promotion hindered the potential of any good song to carry it like "We Belong Together" basically carried the TEOM. At this point I think Mariah needs to collaborate with some mainstream artist just to open the doors for her next project. Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Beyonce would be great.

There are far too many compilations per Sony and newer fans (2005 to present) want a new greatest hits 2.0 that should include her hits during Island Records. The public is not waiting for a new compilation of Vision Of Love and Hero on it. Additional B-sided and unreleased material would be amazing to have but not likely. Yours with J.T. duet with M.J.

If MC wants to break the record for the most number ones, she needs to just tactfully ask the people. We all want to be a part of something big. We need to believe she can and will break that record.

Same here, I'd love more songs like "Mine again", "I wish you knew", "Beautiful" and "The art of letting go". All of these are great. I also didn't really feel "E=MC2" and "MOAIA" either. I feel that"TEOM" and "MIAM" are a lot more mature.

Compilation albums (48,968)

Right now is the time to saturate the market with Mariah because she's been out (or on the down low) for a long while. Right now is the time to put her name, face, music, and legacy out there. No one else is putting themselves out there because they know they're not going to make any money. For the #1's album, she should just add the 5 songs to the current #1's and stop distributing the old one. She can include When You Believe, Sweetheart, and Whenever You Call to a B-sides and rarities album. I still buy compilation albums because they're less money than buying the songs individually and sometimes I don't know the artist's work or what songs are good. It's just a little taste. I recently bought the Boyz II Men one and James Brown for $5 each on Amazon and I wouldn't have bought entire albums by them otherwise.

Album prices (48,967)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
We live in times when music can be listened to for free. Because people can listen to it for free, it's time to permanently lower prices on whole albums so that people will buy them instead of stream. I like the Amazon model where everything comes down to $5 (US) at some point. Personally, I always wait until an album hits $5 before I buy it, unless it's Mariah, or an artist I really like at the moment and want to support. But that's rare. In my opinion, a digital download should cost $5, a physical copy of a CD should cost $5 and include a free digital download ($10 for a double CD), and vinyl should be $20 and include a free digital download. (Vinyl is more expensive to make and it's also artwork that can be framed and hung on the wall.) I'm not talking about specials, I'm saying Mariah should make a big announcement that she's lowering the prices on all of her music as a thank you to the people for keeping her in business for 25 years. I know it sounds like giving it away but people are going to stream it otherwise, anyway. Mariah is the type of artist that, if she has the right people (someone like Yoko Ono) managing her legacy and life's work, her grandkids will still be making money off of her for years and years to come.

I say yes to the Las Vegas residency. The music industry is in a weird place right now and no one is making any money. Vegas is the perfect place for her to make a ton of money, at least until music starts being distributed in a different way that turns a profit again. But if she does it she should hire some creative people to make it an amazing production/experience. I've seen Celine and Britney's shows and they were pretty awesome and worth the travel and money.

Greatest hits album (48,964)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
I feel torn about Mariah releasing a greatest hits album for the 25th anniversary. Greatest hits albums were useful back in 1998 when it was easier to find one album with the best songs rather than running around town trying to buy all of the singles that you liked. Like Otti said, with YouTube nowadays people can just create a playlist of all of her most successful songs and listen to it for free. Another part of me feels like she should release a greatest hits album because it technically can't be considered a flop. I think greatest hits give you more wiggle room in terms of sales expectations. We all know that no artist's greatest hits album nowadays is going to sell millions of copies when people can find all of the songs for free. Another thing is, these are already the songs that made her a star. You don't have to hope and pray that the world will like the music. They already did and do. Plus she can remind the world in an even more obvious way how prolific her career was/is. Ugh, I'm torn.

B / Abraham / Celine (48,963)
by LC from USA

Thank you guys for the agreement/shoutout. And Abraham, I totally agree. One huge difference between Mariah and Celine, which is really what makes me cringe when they're put in the same category, is versatility. Celine got famous, and sold so many albums because for her entire career, she's catered to one audience: adult contemporary. Mariah, on the other hand, with her 18 number 1's has been so versatile and open to exploring other genres. Mariah's number 1's: half ballads, half uptempos/ midtempos. Celine's: all ballads. And that versatility is why Mariah is still relevant in the industry. Mariah is the only artist (besides Michael Jackson) from that time that has more than a billion views on YouTube (2 Vevo certified videos). And she's among the top 40 most followed accounts on Twitter. She's still relevant in today's social media ruled industry. Look at #Beautiful, it has 30+ million views, whereas "Incredible", Celine's single, has 5 million. Mariah doesn't deserve to be shoved into Vegas. She's bigger and better than that.

Celine's level of a superstar was much higher when she started singing in Vegas than Mariah is today. I fear that Mariah won't sell as many tickets as Celine does. I love Mariah, but I see the quality of Celine's performances. She connect with the 30-60 year old ones. Mariah doesn't.

Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez are both still relevant so saying that only irrelevant singers/stars do residencies in Las Vegas is no longer true. Celine Dion is irrelevant because she's stuck in the 90's musically and I don't know what happened with Shania Twain but she's a country artist and country doesn't discriminate against women of a certain age like pop does. Mariah Carey is a phenom. She'll score another hit single and album so I'm not worried about that.

Great songs (48,959)
by B from USA

Mariah Carey needs to continue to write smart, poetic mature lyrics like she did for MIAMTEC and TEOM. I have been reading a lot of articles about MIAMTEC and the question most people ask is, is she still writing lyrics that sound like a little girls diary entry? That was my main problem with Memoirs and Love Story and the other JD ballads except For The Record and Thanx 4 Nothin' from E=MC2. All she needs is a great song and she can easily rebound from this minor misstep. She needs a manager like Benny. She needs to assemble a team like her team from the 90's or 2005.

25 y.o. (48,958)
by Otti from Belgium

The other night I was reading the Wiki article about the album Number Ones. And I was thinking how the music industry has changed for the worst. Back then, it was easy for an artist to connect with the fans with just an album. Now with social media and the internet everything has changed. Now for Mariah to celebrate the 25 years in the music industry with an album is not easy, since no one is buying cds. This generation is not waiting for an album, with for an example a booklet with stories behind the song or pictures like back then. How I miss that time. I got nice memories with the number ones album. You had all the number ones plus some new covers. Nowadays if people want to hear an old song, they go to YouTube, that's why Mariah videos still making more and more views. I don't have no idea if it's good or not to celebrate with an album. Back then for me, I had no internet at home, having the number ones album was a good manner to hear her other hits. If Mariah can have another number one, then releasing a new album with number ones, so that this generation can listen to the older music. That would be great. It worked for me back then.
