My thoughts on MC performing at the Jazz Festival (49,519)
by ADAM from USA
I'm conflicted about this concert. One part of me loves the new riffs and ad-libs throughout each song. It feels fresh and exciting as a long time listener. I wish she'd re-record Fantasy to fit her current voice. The clips online from Fantasy were horrendeous. By far, it was the worst job she's ever made at lip syncing. It was lol worthy and could ruin her legacy if it spreads. While I'd normally say it was unacceptable to lip sync a song during her show, I feel the first upbeat song is ok because it was clear that for the rest of the show that she sang live, and I'd rather have her do that on a fast, upbeat song versus a ballad where you expect to hear her voice and emote. And lastly the other part of me is upset that she performed a show in Jamaica altogether. A huge chunk of Mariah's fan base is gay and its no secret that Jamaica is one of the worst countries in the world to be gay. With their intolerance and violence towards gays, I could only conclude she cares about gays through the extent of them supporting her career and not any other way. By her performing at this festival she endorses their intolerance of gays. Shame on her for once again accepting blood money from nations and/or leaders who are oppressive to their own people. All money is not good money. Maybe one day one of her children will turn out to be gay and then maybe she'll reconsider her position on these kinds of crimes against human rights when it's one of her own kind. This is the s*** that makes me worry about Vegas (49,518)
by Marissa from USA
What in the hell did I just watch? The Fantasy lipsyncing was a complete mess. The sloppy outfits that I've seen from the Jamaica concert look like someone made them while blindfolded. Come on MC. Please no more mess before the residency. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 23:49)
I'm sorry (49,517)
by Abraham from USA
I love Mariah to death but she really needs to start wearing more better and appropriate attire, because what she wore in Jamica was terrible. She looked phenomenal on "Ellen". I don't understand. Anyways, I'm glad she's going back with Sony. I see something big happening this year. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 23:05)
Jamaica setlist (49,516)
by Philipp from Switzerland
Does anyone know the setlist of songs she performed in Jamaica? (Saturday 31 January 2015; 22:40)
I don't get it (49,515)
by G.G. from USA
How is it that Mariah has been in this business for 25 years and still cannot convincingly lip synch ? She needs to watch some drag performances and learn to lip synch for her life. She looked pretty good and sounded ok. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 21:56)
A hero lies in me (49,514)
by Bill from the UK
For years, I could take or leave "Hero". I understood why so many people love it, I understood why it became so popular with the masses, and it is of course sang beautifully and sincerely by Mariah. But, like I said, it never really wowed me like some of her other songs do. All that changed when I was facing a very difficult situation personally. I don't really want to go into the details of it here, but I was struggling to find the courage to deal with it, and then "Hero" played on my iPod. I sat back and listened to the lyrics, which I of course know as well as my own name, but finally, after all these years, they struck a chord with me, and I sat there in awe. All those times when we're faced with difficult situations, or adversary etc., we always get through it and live to see another day. The hero within us "comes along" and just carries us through it. Whenever I dread a presentation at work, telling somebody something they don't want to hear, facing something I really don't want to, that hero in me surfaces, and saves the day. I've never had a lyric by Mariah touch me so much before. And I never really noticed how astonishing this song actually is until now. I've always liked it and been extremely fond of it, but now it has been elevated onto a whole other level. We all know it anyway, but Mariah really is the greatest songwriter there is. Jazz mess (49,513)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
I love MC and always will, but that clip of "Fantasy" posted by Luke is just a hot mess. She looks out if it in a way. Maybe she had a little "ganga" before the show. Who knows? Haha. Anyways I would love to see more of this show if anyone can provide a link to a better performance that would be great. I also think that green/black dress is a hot mess as well. Uhh. What is going on with MC? (Saturday 31 January 2015; 20:36)
Edit (49,512)
by Luke from United Kingdom
I just wanted to add that I was just talking about Fantasy. She seemed to take on all the other songs well and delivered them amazingly. She also looks fabulous. I do hope nobody was messing with her mic again though. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 20:11)
Brian Wilson (49,511)
by THE TRUTH from USA
Shelly, Brian is a legend but he hasn't written anything worth a damn in a century. The important thing would be to write with strong writers whose music continue to impact pop culture in the present day. I do think that Bruno M would be a good match. Even if she sat down with some pianists or guitarists and just dug in, spent some time in the, "wood shop" like in the old days pre fame, got back to the love of making music she'd kill it. It needs to be about the music, not the fame, image, or celebrity. The only way she can make a meaningful come back is to truly embrace the music and forget about the hype. Mariah is on fire (49,509)
by B from USA
I watched clips from the Jamaica Jazz and Blues concert and she sang live and slayed. It's one of her best live performances in recent years. She knows that she needs to deliver to ensure her residency is a success. I have a feeling she's exercising her voice and doing vocal rest before performances like she used to. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 17:43)
Jamaica (49,508)
by Luke from United Kingdom
So I'm not really sure what's going on here. She's lip-synced in the past but here it's like she's not even trying during Fantasy, like she knows something isn't going right. I'm wondering if someone turned down her mic on purpose like when someone extracted her mic feed in Rockfeller. Who knows, maybe the lip-sync plan just failed. She was singing amazing at Beacon Theater though. I don't understand why she struggles on her non Christmas songs. I hope she sorts it out though because poeple wont be happy if she brings this to Vegas. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 12:15)
Diva sings the blues and all that jazz (49,507)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
Emotions, Vision Of Love, Touch My Body and We Belong Together. The Elusive Chanteuse Show needs more legs, preferably a European one. Mariah looks so good and sounds even better, more confident and playful with her instrument, honouring the theme of the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, like the pro she is. She's doing new riffs, runs and just plain reinventing her catalogue, 27 years post her first record deal, and I'm in awe. I can't wait for the longer clips of Emotions and WBT especially. Now all she has to do is make a quick stop to the DR and get rid of that extra baggage a.k.a. "Thirsty". (Saturday 31 January 2015; 11:05)
Road to Vegas (49,506)
by Warrior Butterfly from USA
I was talking with my best friend, as a off hand joke I mentioned Mariah will be in Vegas this summer. Oh well maybe in my next life. Out of the blue she says "You wanna go?" Come to find out she is fan as well. Then we seriously starting thinking about it and then it evolved to a good plot. We have not made a final decision because there is Circus Olay and The Blue Man Group to name a few acts, plus it has been a trying year for both off us. I've never been to Vegas as an adult. So we have to choose one or the other, because of financial cost over all (travel, lodging, tickets). (Saturday 31 January 2015; 8:26)
Re: Meteorite (49,505)
by NYHotShotta from USA
I also agree Meteorite is an amazing song and it deserved singled treatment with an amazing visually enriched music video. Q-Tip is a producer Mariah should keep around. I also think she should work with Danja, The Neptunes, Missy Elliot, Seven Aurelius, and Swizz Beats again. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 8:11)
YDKWTD, Meteorite, Sony and the future (49,504)
by Stacey from USA
I spoke of these two songs awhile ago. I'm just glad to see more fans giving these songs some love. They are pure gold. The thing I love about them both is that have that disco retro feel, yet forward facing combination. MC has been doing that her entire career. She has such a knack for bringing up past grooves while avoiding sounding dated. It's one of the reasons we are celebrating 25 years in the business. She knows what sounds will bring her success. I'm so glad to see her back with Sony and LA Reid. I'm hoping with the Vegas residency, the coinciding #1s album, and new record company, we are going to see MC embrace her 25 legend status. She's earned it. I'd love to see her do a duets type album of classic standards ala Tony Bennett. I don't know if I would want a duet album with MC songs. MC is so dang good on those songs, I wonder if having someone else sing them might taint the song. Or it could be awesome ala Westlife was for AAO or Brian McKnight for WYC. Both duets are better than the original, IMO. The future is exciting. That's for sure. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 3:36)
Empire / Vegas / Mariah (49,502)
by Ethan from United States
EMPIRE: I'm very glad that my prediction/wish of Mariah on the show is almost confirmed. Yay. Vegas: Is it possible of having Mariah duet with Whitney's hologram for When You Believe? Is it too soon? I don't know. It all depends on the idea and Mariah and the production team have the permission to do so. Anyone with me? Mariah: This is all my experiences/observations. When Mariah was a bit less popular, she really worked hard and won the critics and fans all over again. In my honest opinion, I've gone to her concerts since the Rainbow tour, she was amazingly live and put on a great show during her less popular periods: Charmbracelet and Angels Advocate. She got rave reviews from these two tours compared to Rainbow and Adventures of Mimi. And I do see that as well. Therefore, I'm actually looking forward to the Vegas residency because I know that she really has to show her best or be at best to be on top again. It's a bit disappointing/sad to see that 5-7 other millions who bought TEOM didn't purchase MIAM. Who knows? But reality sucks. It's also disappointing to hear/see Mariah got scrutinized by the media when there are other artists who didn't do well at all with their CDs (Celine and JLo). This is my take on it: it shows that Mariah is still popular and relevant and she receives more press whether negative or positive so she will be around for a while. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 2:23)
The Truth (49,501)
by Dove from USA
I am amazed, thank you for noticing. Brian Wilson is a musical genius. He took a lot of drugs in his day (and is not the same man he once was) but his talent is still there and his music is timeless. Even recently he has composed classic masterpieces. What direction do you think MC should take? (Saturday 31 January 2015; 2:12)
My thoughts (49,498)
by B from USA
E=MC2: I'm That Chick, Migrate, and Side Effects are great songs that deserved to be singles. MIAMTEC: Meteorite deserved the single treatment with a David Morales dance remix. Mariah doesn't need to change her sound, she just needs to work with new producers with fresh ideas and beats. I love the ballads on MIAMTEC. Camouflage and Cry are classic Mariah and are great songs. She just needs a record label boss that knows a hit when he hears one and knows how to get an artist to bring his or her A game like he did with Mariah during their time together. This move has me excited. She just needs to release different songs as single instead of trying to recapture the It's Like That/We Belong Together success from The Emancipation of Mimi era. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 1:18)
I love Meteorite on MIAM (49,497)
by ADAM from USA
I second that opinion about Meteorite. Out of all the songs on MIAM, the only song that gets consistently replayed on my devices is Meteorite. When I first heard it I got goosebumps because I loved the direction I thought she was going in. The beat track is so fresh and the lyrics are so uplifting. And it actually sounds like she's inspired by what she's singing. Finally a good song from MC that isn't about love or a broken heart. I felt that song was the only track on MIAM that wasn't like any other song she's ever recorded. On all her CDs after 97's Butterfly, it's so clear which song on every album is trying to replicate. That why nothing is exciting anymore. But Meteorite if it was promoted correctly would have been a smash in the gay clubs and around the world in the dance arenas. I loved what Q-Tip was able to produce and feel he understands music like Mariah does, but unlike her, he's interested in creating a future sound versus repeating one's own success with the same formula over and over again. Does anyone else agree? (Saturday 31 January 2015; 0:39)
Brian Wilson? (49,496)
by THE TRUTH from USA
Some people never cease to amaze me. And it's usually the same ones. (Saturday 31 January 2015; 0:11)
More songs like "Meteorite" (49,495)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
That song is gold. I listen to it all the time and I love it. Produced by Q-Tip, writers: MC, Kamaal Fareed, Felder, Norman Harris, and Ron Tyson. They did a great job. I would love to see MC go in that direction. Working with more professional sounding people. (Friday 30 January 2015; 23:28)
New album (49,494)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
I agree with Adam. MC needs someone directing her on certain things. For example, the song "Money" on the last album with Fabulous was just total crap (aside from MC's part which is always good). I can't believe that even made the album. It's so hard to listen to with that horn going off every second like a car alarm. Did they really think that was a good song? Really? I'm happy that Mr. Reid is back in the picture. The future looks bright. (Friday 30 January 2015; 23:21)
New sound (49,491)
by Dove from USA
I want for her next album to be completely unexpected and different than anything she's ever done before. I'm thinking she could do a whole album with the musical genius Brian Wilson of Beach Boy fame. Or Robert Smith from The Cure. Mariah's voice is like truffles, it can make anything taste amazing, but becomes magical when you add it to a dish worthy of the truffle. The music matters. I want to feel the lyrics and her voice but I also want to feel it in the music. The Beach Boys, The Cure, Pink Floyd, you can feel the mood of tthe songs even if you take the singing part out. If you add a gifted lyricist/vocalist like MC is sensory overload, in a good way. (Friday 30 January 2015; 22:34)
My thoughts on MC's new record deal (49,490)
by ADAM from USA
I enjoyed the latest Billboard article about her new Sony deal. I hope she becomes swayed to create new music that is with new writing and producing partners and fretting her stale sound. While I love something in all of her albums, I can't say that if I wasn't a devoted fan that her music was relevant since '05 album. Some examples for collaborators would be singer/songwriters like Adele, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Sting, and/or Gaga to name a few. I think Mariah has made the same R&B records with the same urban references that maybe were fresh in 2005 but in 2015 just are past there sell by date. With her voice in its limited range and ability to write songs still, Mariah can still make amazing forward-thinking records about different topics such as divorce, equal rights, racism, babies, etc. She needs another Tommy figure to guide her artistic work in this kind of direction because left to her own device she makes the same monotone records that no one really wants to hear. Mariah has a massive fan base still that remember her growing up in the 90's and I think she could still win back a good majority of support from the public if she is forced to make better decisions. After 25 years of music, the only Mariah songs that radio still plays are the quintessential records from Music Box, Daydream, and occasionally Butterfly. I miss our fav girl from Long Island with the big voice that sounds like honey really singing the songs of our lives. (Friday 30 January 2015; 22:03)
Nanny affair (49,489)
by QueenLambassador from Portugal
The nanny earned a salary which means she gets no overtime. Besides, she lived in her house, was fed and traveled and slept in the best hotels. She gets nothing. If I was her, I would be careful because if she wants overtime then she needs to give money back to Mariah because she was overpaid. (Friday 30 January 2015; 21:54)
