All I can say is you'll have your opinion of the situation and I have mine. I don't think Mariah was being underhanded, I think she made a mistake that she paid for. Not saying she's perfect. Yes she has made unnecessary shady remarks about J.Lo or whoever else. I wasn't saying that it's right. Just saying I understand how she felt.

Cover controversies (45,056)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I do find it hard to believe that an artist as image conscious as Mariah wouldn't have seen the single cover before it was announced, and if she genuinely didn't like it, I'm sure she could have asked for it to be changed. But really, is the issue the photoshopped head, or the fact it's not current? If it had just been a close up of the album cover with her head turned (like what she did for Emotions and Fantasy/ Daydream), would it be an issue? Is it the fact it's not a true representation of her current look? She did try to palm off a 17 year old picture off as current the other day on Twitter too.

Oh now I get it. Thanks. And about her breaking glasses: do you think is because her album was a flop? I know she would never try to kill herself. Do you think that the album flopped because of set 11th? I think it's a great album but the movie I didn't like.

Mariah don't know what to do (45,053)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
MC tweeted that she didn't select the single cover (I don't believe this), and that she don't know what to do after the controversy of head swapping with the body. Everyone knows her size now. No need to pretend you're that slender, otherwise, then get on the gym and stop lying to yourself and to the world. If you don't want to go to the gym, then embrace your current size. So she tweeted, and asked suggestions. How about her sitting in front of the piano? How about a creative cover of her in a bus, looking normal like everyone else? How about her in proper clothes for ones, instead of a bikini or swimsuit? Like maybe riding a taxi cab wearing jeans and t-shirt, maybe a hat. She did this cover in one of her singles in Butterfly, and Say Something. That's just the tip of the iceberg, and I'm not even a designer.

Frustrations on Mariah (45,052)
by juan from Dubai
| |
|
|
Mariah is a special person, she ain't crazy but more of an artist in her own musical world. Very protective of herself and lazy. She can beat anyone in the game easy. Both on sales and image. She can dance if she will kick that RaeRae out of the frame, so she can learn better routine than just touching herself and feeling sessy. She can rule this Beyonce era. She can bust everyone's eardrums in a once a year live concert with just pure music and her true raw rough but well rested voice and strictly no backing tracks. She can be fit like those days of Touch My Body video and be the hottest without being scrutinised for over photoshopping. She can be the best Mariah, even better that the 90's golden era. But she is elusive, does not listen to market research, does not target anything, she does not watch other younger singers for insecurities (aside from rappers), she dwells so much about her past and only about herself, she is now a mom, and she is above all, lazy, or for a better term, does not care. I hope I'm wrong. Above her music, there is celebrity career/performance image success, which fans are rooting for. I really do hope she would redeem herself. Nobody can do it but herself.

Response to The Truth (45,051)

I strongly disagree on your theory about Mariah chose the single artwork, and being in control in a superstars' career. - Single artwork. The label might have said, we don't have anymore photos from the shoot last year, what should we do? Team Mariah says, make a composite of the other outtakes, and so on. And label will technically be in control what output has been made, and in this case, it was terrible photoshop work. By the way, it's not airbrushing. It's photo-compositing on photoshop. - Career control. I strongly disagree that Mariah was in full control. Even Beyonce when she left her dad's management, said she was free from all the control and handling of her career and direction. Each of her singles were radio friendly and consumer-attracting. But after being free, her songs were more artsy and less single successful. - Mottola was a 90's genius. He was in full control of all his talents. Which singles to release, which songs to make the cut. How many magazine covers to shoot, promotions, whom to collaborate with, like Walter Affanasief. But when she left Mottola, it was all downward spiral. Butterfly was a success, but with her trying to leave the label, she rushed albums, and at the same time, being attacked on all career/personal aspects, even Wendy Williams was asked to talk bad about Mimi on radio, and she was beaten. Her personality suffered and her insecurities became worse.

Raphael / TRL (45,049)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I think the whole TRL thing was blown out of proportions. People are like oh she stripped there and was blabbering non sense. Well first of all she didn't get naked and many reports tried to make it sound like she did. She was almost fully clothed underneath the oversized t-shirt and either ways that was the type of clothes she wore in Glitter eitherways (hello, Loverboy?). About the things she said, it looked like she was trying to show her frustration and honestly it didn't look that serious. What worried me more was on another day she was on the streets and a reporter asked something and she started venting out her frustration and all and her publicist pulled her away. And Mariah was like "see I am not even allowed to speak" or something along those lines and that showed just how fragile she was at that point.

Two reality checks (45,048)
by THE TRUTH from USA
| |
|
|
1. Tommy Mottola began courting Mariah immediately after meeting her, sending massive bouquets of roses etc, he was not separated from his wife at that time. 2. Anyone who believes that Mariah does not have 100 percent control over her album and single art is completely living in fantasyland. Superstar artists always have complete control over album and single art, something can be vetoed by the label in theory, but it almost never happens. As self conscious as she is, does anyone believe this fiction about her not choosing that single art? Let's wake up and smell the coffee. On the bright side, if she is responding to fans indignation about the airbrushing that is meaningful and perhaps a hopeful sign that she will try reconnecting with her fan base.

Oh yes. How could I forget that interview? Thanks a lot for sharing it. It reminded me of how much I loved Mariah's personality back then. I agree with you that she showcased her best personality during the Rainbow and CB eras. Can you imagine how cool it would have been if "that Mariah" were the one who sat at the American Idol's judges' table? I do like her diva-ish attitude when it is used to great effect though. Take for example the TEOM and E=MC2 eras. It was during these times that she was always responsive to any interviewer but, when she deemed a certain question inappropriate, her grand-diva persona shone through and she would make the interviewer feel stupid by shrugging off the question. For some bizarre reason, she started developing an icy and distant attitude in 2009. I hope I am wrong in feeling that Nick Cannon was partially responsible for this.

You guys are awesome, a personal thank you note (45,043)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Darryle, thank you. Your suggestions and the idea about using songs that first comes to mind when hearing MC's name is a great. Shelly, wow thanks a lot, that's a great list covering some of the greatest songs of her career and highlighting how diverse Mariah's music is (gosh the woman makes me so proud). Bill, thanks man, adore the songs you mentioned. She doesn't know AIWFCIY. See Bangladesh is a very small country (land area 147570 square km) with a total population of 156,497,313 people (yes), and out of these many people I think only 50-150 know Mariah. Just her name, mind you. (I might be stretching when I say 150 because I only met about 5.) The only song they possibly heard is WBT. So yeah they pretty much have no idea lol, but thanks man love the songs you mentioned. Also, the Pure Imagination remix is my in my top 5 Mariah remixes. Champagne_Slurpee, I love how you categorized the songs, will make it so much easier to ensure I chose at least one of each type of the different types of songs Mariah sang and wrote. Thank you. Antonio, thanks a bunch man, that helps a lot. Some of my personal favorites. Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for taking the time out to suggest songs. Means a lot and helped me out a lot since I had no idea which to pick and I blame Mariah since she is the most amazing artist that ever lived. You guys are great.

What I think would also be cool Mimi L for your friend to experience, is the remixes. It'd be good if you, for example, had Dreamlover on the playlist coupled with the Def Club Mix, so your friend can see the attention she gives her remixes with re-sung vocals etc. I'd also show them the Pure Imagination remix of I Still Believe, as that is one of her best (why it never found its way onto The Remixes album baffles me).

Legend (45,040)
by Jimbo from UK

I know some of us often complain about Mariah, or express frustration at some of her choices. But deep down it all comes from love. How blessed are we to have heard such a mesmerising voice? So unique, soulful and rich. Irrespective of what you think about the current state of her voice, silly photoshopped cover art or her eccentricities, it is an immense privilege to hear new material from Mariah. She's a legend. She's been through a tremendous amount of pressure most of her adult life and has survived some very dark moments. MC if you're reading this, know that we all love you, and always will. Like if you agree. I wish all of you a glorious week.

Ian James / Graham Norton Show (45,039)
by Elena from The Netherlands

|
|
Thanks for that video Ian James, I'd never seen that interview before. During that era untill Charmbracelet her image was very likeable and I believe she was more herself than she is now, she was so young there I can't believe it's been that long. This diva act got really out of hand after marriage and after giving birth. I hope it's just a phase as Mariah had many. I would like to share this interview of the Charmbracelet era from the Graham Norton Show. It's less serious than what Ian James posted, but you can see how humble yet funny she stays during a less serious conversation. The best part of the show is where she actually proves she really knows her fans and remembers their names (!) from all over the world. It's when I watch all that footage of how she used to be like during promo I really miss that Mariah. Normal make up, different haird-do's, and casual clothing, down to earth MC.

Hey Mimi L (45,036)
by Champagne_Slurpee from US
| |
|
|
I'd hook her with Fantasy Remix (that intro). Always be my baby (classic 90's jam). Honey, Heartbreaker and Touch My Body are very commercial and catchy tunes. We Belong Together (strongest ballads lyric-wise). My All for the vocal prowess and The Roof for the lyricism and atmospherics. Betcha Gon' Know for the story/emotion. Rarities like Do You Think Of Me and Everything Fades Away. Vulnerable songs like Petals, Looking In Camouflage and Close My Eyes. Gritty powerhouse vocals with a retro vibe: Stay The Night, Make It Look Good, When I Feel It or Mine Again. Her earlier work like Vision Of Love, Make It Happen and If It's Over include her most gritty vocals. Vocally driven songs to show off Mariah's rifts and vocal runs: Lead The Way, Butterfly, Can't Take That Away, After Tonight, I Still Believe and Whenever You Call. True r&b songs to include: Faded, Dedicated, Breakdown, Babydoll, Don't Forget About Us, Underneath The Stars, The Impossible, Joyride, Last Kiss, You're Mine, Thanx For Nothin', and For The Record. Some overlooked emotional gems like The Wind, Can't Let Go, Love Takes Time and I Don't Wanna Cry. Catchy tunes like Say Something, OOC, Cruise Control, Shake It Off, #Beautiful, More Than Just Friends and Up Out My Face. More Urban hits I'd go with Migrate, Sweetheart, Obsessed, Thirsty, Lil Love or It's Like That. Disco retro feel go with Last night a DJ Saved My Life, I'm That Chick, All My Life or Meteorite. I know I've listed too many but hope that helps.

by nikki from usa

"People" don't hate Mariah, I've actually been seeing a lot of praise lately. This album is speaking to the older fans and critics love it. I was on a fashion police blog where they were dissing Mariah as usual. Surprisingly, she was defended by the comment board and these people weren't lambs. Papers will always try to sell and being negative is what they do best. Media hostility aside I'm seeing a great majority rooting for Mariah and wanting to see her return. Really, the rest is up to her.

The cover (45,032)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I don't like it, but it doesn't bother me much, I'll eitherways just make a cover myself and use it. What bugs me though is what was the need for it? Even if there was no time for a new photoshoot why not just skip the picture all together? I mean like ITL and IBLYLT they could have just used text. This unnecessary negative attention was not required at all. I hope Mariah chooses one of the fan made covers instead.
