Singles for release (44,303)
by Lainsky from Philippines
| |
|
|
After listening to the album's songs via YouTube twice, the standout singles for me are YDWTD, Meteorite and Heavenly. Commercially, I believe YDWTD should be released right now as in now, not later, not tomorrow but right now. It has appeal not only for commercial but also to her 90s fans. Meteorite, like most of you here said, is a new sound but I like it too. And Heavenly is just superb. Dedicated sounds like Cater 2 U by DC. Alongside with YDWTD, Thirsty is a good single for RnB radio. Releasing two songs at once I guess is a cool idea. But there must be a single release for this album. Love the album as a whole but I won't buy it in the next 6 months. I am afraid she might re-release this later this year like what she did with her previous album. I will just wait and see.

Slant magazine and Glitter (44,302)

Have you guys read their review of MIAMTEC? Well they rated it 3 out of 5 stars but highly praised both YDKWTD and Meteorite, and at the end say at this point is it too late to ask that Mariah buries Mimi and resurrect Miss Billie Frank once and for all? I thought that was pretty funny. Honestly the first time I heard YDKWTD live from GMA, it screamed Glitter to me. And now listening to MIAMTEC, the in between song banter and giggling also reminds me of Glitter. Am I the only one? Lol.

Darryle (44,301)

That's exactly how I feel. It's very believable that she may want to jump labels but abandoning a project (something she could have just put together in months yet she took 5 years) is something I will never understand. I don't think any artist would want their album to be labelled a flop, especially someone with a decorated career like Mariah. And also since her last album underperformed, all eyes are on this album. If she misses this opportunity too, then it'll be sad because people already wrote Mariah off, and now they'll do it more. And the point you raised about Rainbow's promotion is also true. It's an album, which according to Mariah's interview feels like she was not very attached to and yet she promoted it a lot. I particularly remember Heartbreaker being promoted on everyone and their granny's shows. And that album managed to pop out 2 US #1 singles. Coming to 2014, an album which Mariah says is so close to her heart, and something she spent so many years perfecting, is being ignored. God knows what is wrong. It's a solid album. Non-lambs are liking the music but obviously if you are giving out no info whatsoever, apart from a lonely iTunes banner and a couple of BTS shots on your facebook, the GP will remain unaware.

Promotion strategy (44,300)
by Darryle from USA

Mariah needs one. Despite what some are saying I think this album has tons of single choices. All Mariah needs to do is pick one. Maybe she's struggling to pick between one she loves and one that is commercial. I don't know but something has to happen. If this album gets a top 10 hit then sales will be huge. We can't pretend that Mariah's just over big sales and charts because if she was then she wouldn't have tried so hard with all of these singles. Even if there is no single she could do an interview or something there's Ellen, Arsenio, Fallon, morning news shows and so many more. To those saying this is a get me off this label album that could be true but it doesn't excuse the lack of promo. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Rainbow a get me off this label album. It was finished in 4-5 months. It may be one of her lesser albums but it still had more promo then this. It also had a hit single and I'm pretty sure the label situation was worse then than it is today.

Meteorite / You Don't Know What To Do (44,299)
by cBerr from Canada

While I recommend taking this with a grain of salt, according to a reliable DJ/Remixing forum that I visit, dance mixes are being commissioned for both tracks. Don't know which one will get more of a "push", but we will hopefully get decent remix packages and promotion for both tracks.

Me. I am cautiously optimistic (44,298)
by Mark from United States
| |
|
|
Not sure if this has been posted already or not but YDKWTD is officially going to be released as an all-format single to radio with the intro being kept. There will also be 2 versions, one with Wale and one without him. No official date yet but definitely June. This is all great news and gives me some hope for this era, but still not getting my expectations too high since promo has been pretty nonexistent so far. This song just needs some initial airplay and I think it's so good that it'll just take off from there on its own.

London frustration (44,295)
by BH from UK
| |
|
|
Hi everyone. I have been following this messageboard for quite a while now but have never posted, until now. My experiences this week have elicited this post. Having been a fan since she fell to earth, I have always purchased the physical albums from the record store as soon as it drops. However, my experience of trying to buy this album has been unfathomable. The album was released here on the Monday and as I had downloaded the album off iTunes as soon as it became available, I didn't hit the store until Tuesday. I first went to the HMV in Selfridges (up market department store) and I couldn't see the album anywhere so I asked where I could find it. I was told it was sold out and to try the flagship store not far away. This store was also sold out and was told to try again in the week. Being tenacious, I went to another store and that was also sold out. It is now Thursday and four days after release and all the stores have not restocked. I asked one of the managers and he told me the first store only received 10 copies in total of the album (standard and deluxe). He also told me the flagship store only received 40 copies in total. This is Central London. He told me, as I shrieked in disbelief at hearing only 10 copies arrived, that "It's not really our fault as it's down to the record company. They only send small numbers when they think an album will flop." What's so frustrating is that the record company has not restocked any of the stores yet and it is four days after release. The album sold out in the first day. The guy even told me many people have been asking in both stores for the album and that in the first day the album was out-selling Sam Smith which is expected to be number 1 this week. I dread to think all those missed sales in Central London and the fact that after day 1 she has had no shelf presence whatsoever. If it is so hard to purchase the album by a fan who is willing to go from store to store to store, why would a non-Lamb bother? For those of you who are by now shouting out (due to my long post) "Did you manage to get the album?". Yes I did, but I had to go to yet another record store which had only one copy left.

Sales predictions lowered (44,294)
by G.G. from USA

I just read that the first week sales predictions have been lowered to 55-60 thousand. This is not good. It seems that a lot of the Lambs are jumping ship. This makes me sad, because this (in my opinion) is a good album.

Skip Love Story (44,292)

Wow wow wow. I had no idea that Love Story was replaced by Bye Bye. What a shame, as I love that song and think the video that eventually made it onto Vevo was cute. I did think that it was bizarre how Nick Cannon was appearing in the Bye Bye video, so this makes way more sense now. Wow.

Michele: Answers to your questions (44,291)
by Christy from USA

The "Me. I Am Mariah" snippet was only on the digital version. And you are correct; it was the same thing you heard/saw in the YouTube video where Mariah explained the album title. Second question, not 100% sure why all the symbols were needed but I believe it was meant to convey, as Mariah said in the song, money is just "this, that, the other". In other words, money is nice vacations, expensive foods, you fill in in the blank.

Her voice and reputation (44,289)
by Skip from United States
| |
|
|
Her voice: I actually think her voice is as flawless as ever. The fact that she may choose to record songs in a lower key these days probably has a lot to do stamina, protection of her voice, and wanting them to be written in keys she can perform for years to come. Also, voices change. Listen to Jennifer Aniston's speaking voice in the early years of "Friends" compared to how it is now. It's dropped. That's just nature. Mariah's voice is still the greatest one recording music today. Her reputation: Yes, I do believe her tardiness, her spiraling answers to questions, her "elusiveness" do put people off. But I think Mariah's mind works in a way unlike most people's. I think her genius in music and lyric writing is tied to her somewhat abnormal social skills. And I, for one, would rather have the Mariah I have now than one who was less musically brilliant just so she could answer a reporter's question more succinctly. Bottom line is: I love her and support her, through every high and low, and no matter what's going on in her world right now, I trust her, and I'm thankful for the supremely genius album she has just worked so hard for so many years to give to us.

Mariah's appearance and JD (44,288)
by Skip from United States
| |
|
|
Mariah's appearance: I personally don't care how much Mariah weights, what she chooses to wear, or how she wants to conduct herself in an interview. After 24 years, she's proven her worth and she can do whatever the hell she wants. My only concern is her lack of self-confidence, which she admits to. This is a beautiful person who believed someone when they told her years ago that she has a "good side" and hasn't forgotten it. When Mariah gains a little weight, I see her even more self-conscious and that's the only reason I'd want her to be in top shape - so that she can feel as beautiful as she is all the time. (How she behaves in the "#Beautiful" video or the live performance of "Fly Like A Bird" from Idol Gives Back would be examples of this.) JD: I don't know what goes on behind closed doors, so I don't really know what he's doing to manage her. I do feel a producer should focus on producing and a manger should be hired to do managing, but Mariah's a brilliant business woman. You can't achieve her level of success without being hands on. So I trust she knows what she's doing, and would make a change if she felt a change were needed.

The label (44,287)
by Skip from United States
| |
|
|
The label: I feel Mariah's frustration. When she gets exasperated in the Robert "super fan" video over "For the Record" not being a single ("these people"), it shows how IDJ has never had the confidence in single selections. Examples: Charmbracelet: "The One" is switched to "Boy" during the video shoot; "BOTH" bizarrely follows "IKWYW"; "Yours" only gets a TV test run. TEOM: "To the Floor" and "Say Somethin'" are both tested out before "It's Like That" finally gets chosen; "Stay the Night" gets one TV performance… in the Netherlands. EMC2: "Love Story" gets switched to "Bye Bye", again during the video shoot. "Migrate" gets a 12", "I'm That Chick" gets remixes, then they release "I Stay In Love". MOAIA: "IWTKWLI" gets chosen when "Betcha Gon' Know" is actually charting, the video is delayed by weeks; "HATEU" has an entire verse and chorus cut out of the video. MIAM: With 5 singles - "official", "buzz", "for the fans" or otherwise - before the album, the label appears to now be waffling between "Thirsty", "YDKWTD" and "Meteorite". Plus, "Charmbracelet" and "E=MC2" were both to have deluxe American re-issues, while Memoirs' two remix albums got canceled as well. I've never seen a label this insecure about their choices and, when finally making those choices, this incapable of backing them up. I see no reason for this constant retreating except for a lack of faith in their own skills. If they believed they knew what they were doing, we'd see that in their marketing.

The new album and promotion (44,286)
by Skip from United States
| |
|
|
Long-time reader and life-time lamb here. After reading everyone's comments, I have many things to say. I know long posts are discouraged, so I'll split this into sections and hope this will meet the wWebmaster's approval. The new album: I am of the opinion MIAM is her finest ever album achievement. It may not be packed with singles, but the production is so intricate, diverse, and creative that I feel we get to see every side of MC on this album in a way we never have before, even more than TEOM. She's told us this is an "album" experience, that she wanted this to be the truest representation of her, and I think she's achieved that. I remember she wanted E=MC2 to be packed with singles and that album doesn't feel cohesive. Here at album 12 (or 14), I feel she's finally given us her truest piece of art. The promotion: I don't know why she isn't doing tons of talk shows, but it may be that she feels this album will be a grower and not a shower. It will take people time to discover the full album, and word-of-mouth and a tour will help with that. She was in no rush to complete the album; perhaps she feels in no rush to sell it, either. I, for one, am glad the album is of such high quality that I'll have no problem talking it up to friends. If it had been subpar, then we would have truly been in trouble.

Questions regarding MIAMTEC (44,285)
by Michele from USA
| |
|
|
I bought the deluxe (non-Target) version and first, there is no track called "Me I Am Mariah". I think it was supposed to be only 1:12 minutes long and it's probably the little snippet we heard on YouTube when she was showing the back cover. Does the "regular" and Target version have this? Also, why does "Money" have all the punctuation after it? I thought that meant swearing, but clearly it's not. I am loving Faded, Thirsty, Make It Look Good, You Don't Know What To Do, Meteorite, and Money.

The queen delivered (44,284)
by Gerald from USA by the way of NYC

I actually got the album late Monday night and I couldn't help myself, from the first note in Cry I was hooked. I have to say despite the delays we got ourselves a winner lyrically and production wise. For me this is Mariah's most cohesive album in a very long time. I truly appreciate the art that is this album. For me I am in love with the following songs at the moment: Cry, Faded, Dedicated, Make It Look Good, You Don't Know What To Do, Money. But honestly with each listen it changes lol. Congratulations to our queen for delivering a certified banger.

Did you buy Me I Am? 6 copies here (44,283)
by M from USA
| |
|
|
I downloaded the clean and the explicit version on iTunes. I also bought 3 explicit CD's at Target and 1 Deluxe version with bonus track "America the beautiful". I hope everyone is doing their part. I know the music industry has changed since 2009 when Memoirs debuted with 168K copies sold but 70K this time around still blows my mind. Yet Coldplay is on fire. If only Mariah would release a single and pay clear channel again to play the hell outta the single again. I agree with others on there that she needs to be on Ellen, Fallon, The View, Arsenio, etc. Me I am is brilliant and I really hope if nothing else Mariah wins a Grammy from this body of work. because it's that good.

Stacey / MIAM (44,282)
by Bill from the UK

Stacey, I love it when posters here say how much they like Make It Look Good. I must have listened to that song literally 300 times. It's on repeat on my iPod too and from work and on in my car and plays on Spotify in my house lol. I just think it is a wonderful, brilliant song. When I can tear myself away from MILG and listen to the rest of the album, I must say I've not enjoyed an album this much since TEOM came out. I think every track is a blast and aside from MILG, my other favourites would be Money (when I leave the house I mentally say "money, this, that, the other" as a checklist for my wallet, door keys, car keys and work pass), Cry, One More Try, Beautiful, Dedicated and Supernatural. I love hearing "dem babies", especially when one of them says "I love you so much", just adorable.

Me I am Mariah is a musical masterpiece. I'm loving Dedicated, Make It Look Good, You Don't Know What To Do, and Meteorite. I've already expressed my love for #Beautiful, You're Mine, and Thirsty. Cry, Faded, Supernatural, and Camouflage are vocally driven standouts. She may want to part ways with IDJ but she didn't rush this record. She took her time and made the music she wanted to. I've been a fan since 1995(Daydream). I'm not forcing myself to like the new album, I love it.

Mariah 2014 (44,279)
by Me. I am Carly from USA
| |
|
|
I feel like Mariah gave us such a gift with this album, and frankly we were so close to thinking we would never get it. Remember how half the lambs thought it would be shelved? I can't help but think that after spending her whole life trying to appease others and find love through fame, Mariah is finally at a place where she has unconditional love. As we were living our lives she has been in a fishbowl and I think she is very happy with her music album and lambs and family, so she just can't be worked up over proving herself anymore. I was upset about this prior to the album but now it feels like she is just living more organically good for her, she is not going anywhere but we need to adjust.

Initial thoughts on MIAM (44,278)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
Bought the album Tuesday night and have had it playing non-stop in my house dealing with kids, etc. First off, let me just say it's nice to hear MC's full voice vocal. I know many fans love the whisper, but it's nice to hear all parts of her voice. In having the record playing while I chase my kids around the house, lol, I have to say the first song that stopped me in my tracks was Make It Look Good. Oh my, that song is my jam at the moment, and SW's harmonica solos? Pure gold. #Beautiful is great. I'll tell you though, it's kinda funny how this all works out, but YME is a favorite of mine on this album. When the song was released, I didn't hate it or love it. I was indifferent toward the song. But, for some reason, hearing it along with the rest of the song, it stands out as a favorite. You Don't Know What To Do is smash hit. Wale can still go, IMO. But, if he has to stay, I can live with it. Honestly, this song should have been released in February ahead of the album's release instead of YM(E). Heavenly is amazing, but too many chord changes at the end. It's almost like enough already. One or two at the end would have sufficed. Still listening to it and digesting it. Peace.
