Nostalgia and retro sound (42,741)
by Edward from USA
| |
The Emancipation of Mimi was epic because of the sound it carried. The nostalgia got hold of people. The album was not only for the new generation, but older people enjoyed it as much. "Mine Again", "Get Your Number", "Your Girl", "Circles", "I Wish You Knew", "Joyride", "Fly Like a Bird" reminded people of what good music was like. Many people in their 50's, 60's and even 70's went and got the album. The older generation shouldn't be underestimated. The album catered to a broader audience, the perfect combination of the young and the not so young. It was cohesive, it was enjoyable, and some critics said that TEOM was the only album out there worth paying $10 for. I'm hoping for her to bring that retro sound again. #Beautiful and TAOLG were steps in a good direction. E=MC2 was the only Mariah Carey album in which the tracks sounded disconnected from each other. They went, as expressed by Mariah, for a collection of radio friendly singles, but that was about it. It played like a greatest hits album. It is a fun album I rarely listen to, but when I go to the gym.

Matthew / Mariah's future recordings (42,740)
by Edward from USA
| |
Matthew, do you know the process of putting together a song in the studio? I was shocked when I saw it myself. Mariah is able to put this out-of-this-world vocal performances in the studio because the songs are piecemeal together. As she said in an interview on Oprah once: She could be in the studio and hit an stratospheric high note once, and she would say to the guy on the keyboard: "I hope you got that? Because it might not show up again today." It might take a singer many sessions to put a song together piece by piece. Sometimes they just work on a line, then go home and rest. Now, when you're singing live, there's not stop and let's do it again. Mariah could replicate her studio sound when her voice was in top condition, but now it is what it is. Toning down her vocal acrobatics in future recordings would allow her to confidently perform more often without sounding strained. Celine has been singing longer than Mariah, has more albums out than Mariah, combining her French and English albums, has sung almost every night for many years, and even though her voice is not the same, she can still deliver consistency when singing live. I wish Mariah had taken better care of her voice, but it is what it is and I made my peace with it. I will always support her.

Album push back (42,739)
by Aaron from UK
| |
According to sources, Mariah's new album is going to be pushed back again. Although this hasn't been confirmed by herself, the album has been removed from the release schedule on both Hits Double Daily and Island's official website. Quiet disappointed if it is.

Suspicious silence (42,737)
by Ryan from the Philippines
| |
With the overwhelming silence that's going on right now, I am truly having a feeling that Mariah's team is cooking up something big on May 6th. I tried to be skeptical about the release but no, I think it's really going to happen as promised and it'll surprise not just us but the non-fans as well. I am also having a feeling that the album will be released initially online on 5/5 and the new single and video the following day. It could be Thirsty. Title-wise, it's a single material and as far as I can remember, Mariah said in an interview that she cannot wait for us to hear Thirsty on 5/6. Having said of the difference of the dates, it could mean that the album won't have a lead single for a day. If you remember, Mariah stressed that she wanted us to hear the album in its entirety and not merely focus on a specific single for us to get the whole story behind it. So, that day ahead online release would make sense with her goal. That's how I see it now, and I hope it'll happen. We'll see, soonest.

Her timing is right (42,735)
by QueenMc from Usa, California
| |
Last year era wasn't ready for "Beautiful". I think she was way ahead of her time, I think it would make more sense to release this 70's sound back to life. The music industry is crumbling down slowly. We need a diva like MC to bring the new and lod generation back to life. I hope everyone will give her a chance with this "new" genre of music that we're not used to. We're in for a big surprise, she's been holding back secrets. I wouldn't be surprised if this album was pushed to July 3. I think she wants us to hear the album as it was meant to be heard.

Focus on new album and stop ranting, time to unite (42,733)
by Louie Baltazar from Philippines
| |
A few days left before the album release and I'm still seeing rants. Time to set aside all our negative thoughts and unite. If you're a MC fan, you should be living in positivity and believing on nice things to happen. That's what her songs thought us, that's why she has written for all of us. And also, being new on a message board doesn't mean you're a new fan. That is totally absurd. Yes we are free to say what ever we please to say but we must always think of influencing other fans to be positive. That's what MC thought us on the first day she started sharing her talent. To share what I'm doing so far. I have listed at least 300 friends in my FB that are really close to me and started promoting the new album. At least 230 responded and confirmed that they would purchase the new album and promised to promote the new album to their friends too. I will not stop from this, I will still work on the remaining 70 friends. By the way, I have more than 300 friends in my FB but these 300 are my friends for more than 25 years now.

On the subject of legacies (42,732)
by Matthew from USA
| |
Randy, if Mariah can sing a song in the studio, why would it then be impossible for her to sing it live? Do you mean that she can't sound exactly like her studio recordings? Who does? Or are you saying that what she does in the studio is too hard for her to do live? I respectfully disagree. I think that if she wanted to, she could sing any of her most recent material live. But even if she could not, I would want her to keep doing her best work in the studio. An MTV Awards performance is one and done, but an album is something we will listen to through the years, even when Mariah is gone. It might be different if Mariah were an opera singer. An opera singer's legacy comes from her live performances. But Mariah is a recording artist. Her legacy will come from the albums she puts out and how they were critically received. So I don't think that Mariah should water down her vocals in the studio just so she can be comfortable singing live for an awards show. She should bring her very best vocal to the studio, even if the live performance won't be as great. Her legacy depends on it.

Re: Fans (42,731)
by nikki from usa
| |

I have to agree. You should buy MC's material when you like it. It doesn't make sense to buy music you don't like and then complain when she continually releases other songs like it. Your dollars are voting and Mariah will make music based off of what is selling. Quite frankly, it can be counterproductive. If fans and the general public alike aren't really feeling a track and it does moderately well due to excessive sales from fans alone, then she'll keep making the music no one's really feeling. That effects her album sales and keeps true gems from being heard.

Buying music (42,730)
by Marissa from USA
| |
I agree G.G. I am a fan, but I buy music based on merit. Since Mariah has been killing the game IMO for at least 97% of her career (I'm not just talking about commercial success, but great material) I've never really been faced with the issue of whether or not to buy her music until this unidentified era. I didn't buy TAOLG or YME because I didn't like the songs. It's as simple as that. If I'm buying something I need to feel like the purchase is worth it, whether it's Mariah or not.

Regarding buying music. I have been a fan since the beginning. I did not buy Triumphant. I did not like the song, at all. I do, however, love the Triumphant Pulse Club Remix, it's on my gym playlist. I will not buy a single I strongly dislike. My money, my choice. I love Mariah, that doesn't mean I love every song she records. I always buy her albums, but I'm not going to "encourage" MC to record songs like Triumphant by buying the single.

Re: Fans complain too much (42,726)
by Webmaster Eric from the Netherlands

It's funny and always surprises me when someone new comes to this messageboard and start acting like we are not real fans, because real fans will buy everything Mariah releases. How do you know we don't do that? We are the ones who support her for many years. I have been a fan for over 20 years and I know a lot of you are also. Because we are sometimes critical of Mariah doesn't mean we love her less. So please stop acting like you're a better fan than the rest of us.

Fans complain too much (42,725)
by JVoice from United States
| |
About half of you all are constantly complaining about Mariah not having a hit single for this era, but most of you all didn't even support or buy Triumphant, Almost Home, TAOLG or YME. If all the fans came out and actually bought the singles on iTunes and requested the song and video you all wouldn't be complaining about MC's status in the industry. Look at yourself and be real and who's music you're really surporting. Half of you all aren't loyal and support other female pop artists. Mariah paved the way for the current girls in the industry.

MC farewell album? (42,723)
by Gilles from Malta
| |
I really think it is not a farewell album, but we all know that it is the last album that Mariah made for Island Def Jam because she signed for 5 albums. I am sure she will make something different to escape the music industry. As we know MC, she lives for music, it is her saving grace, so we know that she won't really stop. She wants to be really free and take her time for her children and do not really get a big schedule. I think that's the reason why she wrote the "Art of letting go" and it makes sense.

Mariah's new album (42,722)
by Edge McQueen from Philippines
| |
Mariah's new album will be a double album entitled "Songbird" and "Sweet Soul Odyssey". The first CD will contain Mariah-only tracks like "You're Mine" and "The Art of Letting Go" and perhaps some Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson covers/tributes. The second CD will feature collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Miguel, Nas, Wale, Maxwell, Fabolous and few other surprises. It will be initially released as an iTunes exclusive and can only be bought as an album because Mariah wants us to listen to it in its entirety. The new single is coming out as early as next week. I just hope Mariah can loose weight before the album is released so she could promote it properly.

Retirement and pushback (42,721)
by Randy from USA
| |
I'm more than positive that MC is not retiring. That wouldn't make sense. Even if the voice was in tatters or the buying public just aren't buying anymore, she loves music. Here's what would happen first. She would continue to make albums quietly like Annie Lennox, Dionne Warwick, Cher, Aretha, Diana Ross and Patti. She would also stop releasing vocal performances from the studio that she can't replicate live. That's the way her career would be after this album, if the album flops. No one really retires. Even if they announce it, like JayZ did a long time ago. Now to address a pushback, Daydream327: I thought for awhile she would push the album back but I really think a pushback would have been announced by now. Now I could be wrong, and we could all be disappointed in a few weeks, but what in the world would be her excuse and how could she possibly make that right with the lambs? She did say a month or so ago: I am going into the studio and I am not coming out until the album is done. She has pretty much stuck to that promise so I think she'll stick to May 6.

Guys, May 6th is the only date we got since the orginal pushback of last July. It's not like she keeps changing the date over and over. It was July 23rd, then she thought she wanted more time to work on it and now it's May 6th, period. Enjoy the album.

Album pushback (42,717)
by Daydream327 from USA
| |
This is just my my opinion and observation, but I think the album may be pushed back again. I wish I'm proven wrong though. But I believe when YME was released Mariah nor the label didn't think it would tank so bad. Yeah, Mariah can say she doesn't care about commercial success anymore, but let's be real, if she didn't then the album would have been released already. I don't think Mariah's ego will allow her to release an album without a hit song. I just wish she thinks differently though and just decides to release the album. At this point I think pushing it back would hurt more than just releasing it on May 6th. I can guarantee that if this album is indeed pushed back people will no longer have much interest, if any. That's why she just needs to release it for the fans. MC needs to realize there will come a time where she's not gonna be as popular as she once was and just accept her legacy and accomplishments as is. It happens to every artist. Once she stops thinking about the charts, I believe she'll become more comfortable and grow musically as well. I wish she would just take the Prince route after this album. Anyhow, either way the album probably will not have huge 1st week sales and I think this is what Mariah/label is worried about.

Retirement (42,716)
by Bill from the UK
| |
I really hope this isn't Mariah's last album, as I have a feeling it will be one of her best. Something is telling me that it will join the "holy trinity" of Daydream, Butterfly and Emancipation, three creative and career peaks in my opinion. I completely understand her wanting to spend time with Nick and her children, so if it is going to be four year waits between albums because of that then so be it, but for it to be her last would devastate me.
