It's Like That (41,802)

Mimi L, I love that song. It was a smart move for them to release that song first instead of the boring, yet extremely different, Say Something. Even though it was an uptempo, Mariah turned up the vocals during her ad libs like she was roaring back into radio demanding a hit. The beat was so sparse, that the backgrounds and ad libs really stood out. I love how she didn't let up on the vocal either and rocked out with fat man scoop at the tail end of the song. I also loved that it had a pre-chorus. There was another diva that had a club song out at the same time and I was almost sure people were going to gravitate to that song instead, but I believe that Mariah did a smart choice in releasing a harder edge club banger that matched the Lil Jon/Down South sound that was dominating the airwaves during that era. It was also a different sound for her as she had never released a club banger as a single previously and there was no other song on the radio with that type of vocal performance over a hip hop beat. Regardless of the direction she chooses this go round, whether it be Urban, R&B, Pop, Jazz, or little bit of all of those genres, one thing has to happen, she has to sang her face off. No one else has that voice and if she doesn't capitalize on that, her not so secret weapon, she will blend in with all the other songs on the radio.

So it looks like the song re-entered the iTunes 1000 after yesterday's performance, even with all the bad press and twitter comments. All she needs to do is continue to line up performances at least once a week for the next 6-8 weeks. I tracked Beautiful's chart performance on iTunes like a hawk when it was released and each time she performed the song, regardless of how good or bad it was, it would shoot up the iTunes chart. The same can be done with this song. Not many people know of its existence yet. Common promo, it can still happen.

New songs? (41,800)

"I Don't Wanna Stop Loving You" Songwriters: Mariah Carey, Usher Raymond, William Edmund Young "I Got A Man" Songwriters: Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, William Edmund Young "Love Like This" Songwriters: Mariah Carey, William Edmund Young "Man Of The Hour" Songwriters: Mariah Carey, MVP Sowestbred, William Edmund Young "This Is For Real" Songwriters: Mariah Carey, Tupac Shakur, William Edmund Young So these songs were registered years ago when she started working on this project, I wonder if any of them will land on the new album or be released as extras or unreleased songs. I really like the titles like "Man Of The Hour" and "I Got A Man". It is interesting to see Usher and Mary J listed as songwriters. The Tupac song must sample one of his lyrics. What does everyone else think?

Video selfies at 44 (41,799)
by BakedBoodie from USA

Yes. Mariah's "look-at-me" videos are getting old. Can we get something creative? Vision Of Love was a "look at me" video but she wasn't all selfie, vanity-hamming it up in front of the camera, batting her lashes, tilting her head to the side while she looking directly at the camera or strategically placed, facing with her good side angles only towards the camera. Over and over again every year, it gets old. And the director should think about a fan ban. If there was a wind tunnel, hair blowing in the wind credit limit, she'd be way over her limit. Billy from England, UK, the answer to your question what would it take to be back on top is sing. And I mean for real. There are singers older than her and their voices have a far better quality of vocal texture and virility. I think vocal rest is like exercise rest. What's going to happen if you don't exercise at all? You lose, you get out of shape (as I'm eating this doughnut). That's why she always sounds like she just woke up in her tone when she starts singing in the new song.

Stephen, it seems to be your posts and pic are bringing the boys to the yard. Should you get married, please let me know. Imagine, love's being born right here at MCArchives' messageboard, who would've thought? Eric should be the best man. As for YM(E), I'm hoping for the best. This new era started with so many negative things: ill fate of Triumphant, the lip-syncing, the dislocated shoulder, the push backs, the no so good videos. I am hoping the album doesn't get pushed back again. I'm afraid that even if it turns out to be a great album, all these setbacks will put people off.

To the webmaster, could we do without the "voting" here. This to me is nothing but a popularity contest by having them. The same people who have come here for years get more up votes. While the newbies who just started to post get a lot of down votes even when a lot are praising Mariah in that post.

I agree with David and Billy. I also worry sometimes at Mariah's consant champagne intake. She drinks it way too much. And I think that that's one of the problems that interferes with her voice. She needs to stop and get it together. Her voice is her gift and instrument. No more drinking and a lot of rest. And vocal exercises would help too. I don't want Mariah lose her voice the way Whitney did.

Week 2 at Radio for You're Mine eternal (41,794)
by Blake from USA

YM(E) is now placing in the Top 50 in three formats on Mediabase: AC Radio #31 (=) MARIAH CAREY You're Mine (Eternal) 70 Spins (+2) 0.148 (+.001) Rhythmic Radio #45 (+2) MARIAH CAREY You're Mine (Eternal) 347 spins (+34) 2.228 (+0.134) Urban AC #45 (new) MARIAH CAREY You're Mine (Eternal) 54 spins 0.202 This is slow start and clearly not enough to generate sales on iTunes but it's a start. Are you requesting lambs? I am hoping the single doesn't fall off the Hot 100 chart this week.

Thanks sweetie for seeing and understanding my point of view. *hugs* And to you too Mimi. I agree 100% about the song "It's that like". I love it as well and actually play it from time to time. Her voice on that track is beautiful. (But then again, her voice is in just about every song.) I know so many people who want her to do another fun song like that one. The video to the song is my favorite. The gowns and beautiful long hair and that black two piece she wore at the end was stunning. But man do I wish that Mariah would have turned and released "Time of your life" as a single. It has the same feel and sound to "It's like that". I know it could have been a chart topper. I played it to my mom and she liked it a lot. I think Mariah wasted and missed an opportunity with that awesome song. But I don't dwell on the negatives. I'm just glad and grateful that she is still making music. I personally think that she has the talent and potential to accomplish so much more.

Honestly, as much as I hate to admit it, um Mariah needs to get handled one more time. (Like she was with Tommy.) She needs to have her songs written for her, and she change like one or two words and call it a collab. Then she really needs to be on vocal rest literally everyday if necessary. No drinking. She needs to sing live at every performance. And if she lips the climax it needs to be a different prerecorded track for every performance. She needs a new stylist. And work with producers who know good current music. And that's what I think should be done on her next album's lead single and two follow ups. And two at the least will reach #1. I think she sounded really amazing in Australia and GMA last year. So I know she's still got it. And honestly I would want her to release one last album dedicated to the fans as a goodbye album. So she leaves on a high note. Of course she should still sing for Christmas shows and hopefully feature on other artists tracks.

IDJ / cheap videos (41,789)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah has been putting some low budget videos lately, but we have to understand that she's working with whatever money her record label has assigned to her for these projects. Hearbreaker was $2.5 million to make, but Mariah was still hot back then, and her albums were selling left and right. Rainbow was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. After TEOM, she had a good budget for "Touch My Body", but once things started falling apart, subsequent videos were as cheap as the ones she's putting out today. The money spent on videos, promotions, and recording needs to be recouped from album and single sales. Sadly, spending lots of money on Mariah, from a business standpoint, is not a good idea right this minute when she needs it more. I have seen some very impressive low budget videos though. I think she needs to come with a video a la Through The Rain or Butterfly, because these "look-at-me" videos are not working for her.

I happen to agree with everything in your last post. There were several parts of the song which were different from the studio version so I really don't get how anyone can think it's the same. If some hears the song at least twice, they'll know it's different. Now whether the song was pre-recorded, half/full lipped or dubbed is anybody's guess. I think she did atleast sing parts of it live because she kept adjusting her ear piece and people who are saying that she didn't do her "hand movements" which is like uber proof that she wasn't singing live, I'd like to say, when you are sitting on a piano with a dress so tight and risky, I think you'd be pretty nervous enough to forget a lot of things, even if it's a habit. MC usually does that when she's standing on a flat ground. It's fine to hate a song, don't go around bashing it. I'd also back up the Isaac part, he was one of the first to say he didn't like the song much, but that's it, no negativity was spread. Also, someone wrote about having their boobs out and cougar hair on trying to attract boys when they are 44 like M. Are you suggesting that's what M does? Please don't turn a classy performance into a cheap show.

Mariah's life (41,785)

To be lying while drinking champagne or wine, lip syncing, "beautiful school". Mariah is lost. I worry about her career, I'm tired of Mariah's actitude. The people need and want a mature singer because maybe she's the one big big singer. Turn up.

What else am I supposed to talk about? She's heavily primitive on this song. As of lately every time we hear about her it's based around YME. Am I supposed to come up with fake album and song titles? The first song released from an album is supposed to be the very best to appeal to a broader audience. I'm just concerned. Is this the best she had for us from an album she's worked on for 3+ years, and has pushed back the release time and time again? Of all the songs released thus far, Almost Home I think is the best. I think the video is tastefully done, wish if got more recognition. I'm still baffled as to why it was ever associated with OZ but it wasn't used in the movie, think that could've helped. In my mind I'm wondering what is going on with her career, who's calling these shots etc.

Every time I come on here now, we seem to be talking more about Issac than Mariah lol. I read the article about YME tanking and, personally, I get it. To me it sounded like a slowed down Your Girl to the We Belong Together beat. Just didn't click for me. That said, I loved Beautiful and TAOLG. I still play Beautiful a lot because I love the guitar and the driving drum loop, it sounds fresh and current. YME sounded like another WBT rehash. We've had WBT, Don't Forget About Us, I Stay In Love, Angels Cry. How many more before she gives up on trying to recreate a ten year old hit?

What is going on at Island Def Jam Records and radio? (41,780)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
When LA Reid left Def Jam Records, Mariah's support from the label is not what is used to be. I am really concerned that she can't get enough airplay for YME. She has never had this much trouble having a hit song to put out her album. She needs to call Elijah Blake/Sevyn Streeter/Diplo really soon to help her come up with a radio hit because YME is not it. Radio is not playing the song because is not a top 10 produced song. I would like for her to work with Ryan Tedder to come up with a pop hit that would make Top 40 radio want to play her music. I believe the two of them could up with an awesome song. I believe Mariah really needs to let five to six songwriters write with her in the next month to create that next hit. At this point, she can't do it with her and a producer alone. Pop and Oak songwriting and production duo is really hot right now as well as DJ Mustard, The Rascals (Ariana Grande), Rock City, Pharrell, and Timbaland, Salaam Remi, Harmony Samuels, Al Sherrod (Ariana Grande) and The Underdogs. Only time will tell if we see an album on May 6th. Because right now our girl Mariah is not being supported by radio. She needs a first single with a revolutionary futuristic sound in the next month. I hope someone helps her to see that. Ryan Tedder please call Mariah.

With fans like us (41,779)
by Geronimo from USA

Is there another type of board on the internet where Mariah Carey fans can freely indulge in posting negative speculations, uninformed judgements, unsolicited career advice, chart-position anxiety, and accusations of a declining work ethic about Mariah on a daily basis without feeling victimized by fans who say they don't come to a "fan" site for that kind of vibe? I get the feeling that there are some folks posting on this site who want to gripe about their disappointments and expectations just as much others want to come here and express their love, dedication and admiration for Mariah. I'm sure Mariah does enough of her own self-critique and I'm sure that her label and others give her plenty of career advice and critique. A fan site, as far as I understand the genre, has a unique task and opportunity to encourage, uplift and promote an artist in a way that is different that others spaces where Mariah might be equally slammed or praised, accused or vindicated. Free speech activists have the entire world wide web to "state their opinions". Why be consistently negative on this kind of site?
