Remakes (39,261) by RadChad from United States
Wow Licia, really? You really think Mariah can't touch the original to most of her remakes? Now I will admit Prince still owns The Beautiful Ones, I think MC did a nice job especially with the climax, but over all I think she held back a bit whereas Prince laid it all on the table. And maybe even Bringing On The Heartbreak (even though I've grown to love it) is own by the original. My other least favorite remake was... wait for it... I Still Believe (but I love the Pure Imagination version). However, Mariah owns "I'll Be There" and "Without You". "Open Arms", IWKWLI and "Against All Odds" are all a draw I would say with a slight preference toward MC. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is another one she owns. I would say nine times out of ten Mariah's vocals gives the song a new life (or life in general), which makes her remakes as a whole fresh and another classic rendition.

Not you too. The horror and blasphemy. Lol. I too love all her remakes, but most of the songs she has remade she can't touch the originals. I feel the same way about other artists remaking her songs (especially from the 90s). They may do a great job at singing the song , but they will never be better or outdo the original in my eyes. Now if she remakes a song that was crappy back in the day and made it better, that's a different story and so far she has not remade a song that was ever bad.

Glitter and Memoirs (39,259) by Lainsky from Philippines
Since last week I was playing a CD or two each day of our favorite diva and I realized that MC's artistry really came out in Glitter and Memoirs, but unfortunately these are her two lowest selling and harshly criticized by people. These two album are in my top 5 of with Butterfly and Music Box. The common with these two album is the story behind it as well as the continuity untill the end. Almost all the tracks in Glitter (my least favorite is the lead track though and Reflections) are gems lyrically and musically the same with Memoirs (Standing O, HATE U, Candy Bling, Inseparable are on the top of my lists). The Art Of Letting Go, I pray and hope that it has MC's artistry as a whole lyrically and musically but with very strong appeal to radio and masses and to her 90s fans and young generations that will lift up her credibility not only as a diva with a 5 (or 7?) octave voice. But will cement her in the music industry not only as a music legend but as a truly gifted song writer, singer and artist. I guess that what she desires.

The Beautiful Ones (39,258) by Jamie from UK
I also really like both versions, but slightly prefer Mariah's because anything this woman sings turns into pure gold for me. I prefer almost all her covers to the original. So yes Licia, I did just say that! Lol. That's why she's one of the top singers in my list, her voice is truly a gift from the gods.

Could it be? (39,257) by Will from England
The sound of a new single on the horizon? And what could be the album close behind it? Huh, we could get it this year after all.

You really think Mariah and Dru Hill out did Prince on The Beautiful Ones? Girl please. Don't get me wrong, I think Mariah did a good job but her version isn't even on the same level as Prince's. The way the man goes from a soft faulsetto to screaming, " Do you want him? Or do you want me? Cuz I want you!" is so haunting, intense, and emotional at the sametime. That song is so sexual. It goes from an extremely, intense build up that leads to the ultimate passionate climax. Mariah's remake was missing that in my opinion.

Anita Baker (39,255) by Special K from USA
Wow, Anita Baker gave Mariah a shout out on Twitter citing the lyrics to Butterfly. How cool it that?

Mariah/Prince (39,254) by Anonymous from
I know that MC and Price have worked together in a song for the Glitter album but, as everybody knows, that song never came out, so I'd like to hear maybe a duet or a song produced by Prince in Mariah's voice. She needs to explore new things and discover new producers and sounds.

The beautiful ones (39,253) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I became a fan of Mariah during the Butterfly era, and The Beautiful Ones was for a long time my favourite song on the album. I still love it, but almost never listen to it.

Stacey wait! (39,252) by Licia from USA
No, I'm going to pretend you didn't say that! She could never outdo Prince. We should just say she made an 80s song sound current. Lol. I do love the Beautiful Ones remake though and I hardly ever hear or see any fans that appreciate this song. She made it her own and I am glad that Prince allowed her and Dru Hill to remake it because from what I understand Prince doesn't allow a lot of people to cover his songs. After hearing Maroon 5 butcher Kiss, I understand why. I love Maroon 5, but no. Lol.

More in studio pics / The Beautiful Ones (39,251) by Stacey from USA
More studio pics from MC. *sigh* I am willing to wait for good music, but she is pulling my heart strings right now. Maybe it's the pregnancy, lol. Who knows? I just need some MC music to play, lol. I don't know why, but I have had this song running through my head constantly lately. It's never been one of those "go to" songs I love, but for some reason lately I've developed a new appreciation for it. From the slowed infectious beat to the masterful play between Sisqo and MC at the end is just perfect. Sorry, but this is one song where I think Mariah outdid Prince and that is almost impossible to do most times.

Almost Home and the Oscars (39,250) by Monark from Australia
My feeling is that Almost Home is not eligible for the Oscars because of it's placement (or lack thereof) in the film and soundtrack.

ObscureOpulence (39,249) by Musti from UK
You make a very interesting point regarding a potential Christmas album in 2000. I never really believed Mariah wrote the Grinch song for herself. But she did re-release All I Want For Christmas Is You in Japan in 2000 including a new So So Def Remix and O Holy Night 2000 Live Version (which is now on MCIIYou). Perhaps MCIIYou as a concept was first conceived in that era and some work was done, but Mariah preferred to focus on Glitter in the end.

That is so lame that they played the song at the very end of the credits. That's crazy. Most artist would have been played at the very beginning or at least after the first orchestrated track.

Mariah Carey movie roles, film, acting career etc (39,247) by DivergentIntel from United States of America
I've always thought Mariah Carey is a great actress and has lots of acting potential, whether it be in films, movies, cinema, broadway etc. She can do it all. Most importantly, it has been said that Mariah was meant and intended to be the lead role cast in Evita. Given Mariah's success, growing popularity, image, and personality, and style at the time, I think she would have pulled off the role successfully and even nabbed an Oscar for best actress and other awards for best songwriter etc. Given that Mariah had a Mary Poppins attitude and more on track etc, I think she would have had superb acting skills for Evita, overall. In addition, I think Glitter got a bad wrap and that outside forces were trying to sabatoge it and trying to keep Mariah and her success to remain hampered and in developmental hell. Glitter, the movie and the soundtrack were awesome, period, nuff said. I wish Mariah Carey would have released all of her unreleased tracks and songs intended for Glitter. Glitter, if thoroughly promoted, would have really taken off and propelled her to even greater heights.

All That Glitters/Glitter albums, movies, and controversies (39,246) by DivergentIntel from United States of America
IMHO Glitter is one of Mariah Carey's best albums. Glitter was her last album for Sony, along with the Greatest Hits collection released in late 2001. Mariah had a gag order and legal clause for a few years that she couldn't discuss the marriage with Mottola and divorce or deep internal struggles between her and the label. Mariah got out of Sony one album early because Tommy Mottola and Jennifer Lopez used her licensed music samples for JLo's album and Mariah threatened to sue for a variety of charges and losses and damages. As a result Mariah took Glitter with her to Universal Music Group's (UMG)/Virgin Records. Glitter was a joint venture between Sony/Columbia Records and UMG/Virgin Records. Sony retained the rights to Glitter soundtrack and studio album in Japan and a few other international markets and territories and the rest was under Virgin Records. Virgin had to buy the rights and buy out the remainder of her Sony/Columbia contract. I also suspect that Mariah planned to release a Christmas album in 2000, being that she had written, produced and sang a new Christmas song that was intended to be used and go on the Grinch Christmas movie's soundtrack album. However at last minute Tommy Mottola ordered that the song couldn't go on the Grinch soundtrack because it was going on a soundtrack album thar was under another label and part of a contractual and clause and conflict which was actually found out to be a nonsensical claim. Mariah ended up having Faith Hill sing it.

Almost Home (39,244) by Will from England
Almost Home as a whole was not a very intricate part of the film. There was no hint to it though out the musical soundtrack in the film (which the CD mainly comprises of hence why I think it wasn't included), and to be honest, the version that is at the end of the film sounds like a rough demo of the song, before she released the final version that we bought.

Almost Home not on Oz soundtrack (39,243) by Edward from USA
It is so weird that "Almost Home" was part of "Oz: The Greatest" movie soundtrack, but they didn't include it on the soundtrack album. I have never seen anything like that. When I went to Amazon.com to purchase a copy of the soundtrack, I was shocked when I didn't see it on the tracklist. Another annoying thing to me was to hear the song played not at the beginning, but right at the end of the movie credits, just when everybody had just left the theater.

Best Original Song (39,242) by Haytham from Philippines
Speaking of Almost Home, I know it's too early, but I think Almost Home has a shot at the Oscars next year. What do you think guys?

When You Believe (39,241) by Jamie from UK
Will, perhaps it has something to do with the fact the song was part of a soundtrack album. It's essentially a movie song. It's like Almost Home which I doubt will be on Mariah upcoming album, even if it had been a hit.

Re: Will (39,240) by Billy from Greece
That's an interesting observation that I've been contemplating on myself as well. I was particularly puzzled about why they omitted "When You Believe" from Whitney's 2000 "Greatest Hits", especially the international version of the album. What comes across as further buffling is that this double disc contains personal liner notes by Whitney, where she thanks all of her collaborators and duet partners, except for Mariah. Same thing with her "My Love Is Your Love" album where "When You Believe" originally appeared. She thanked Kelly Price, Faith Evans etc, but not Mariah, which is weird given that they were friends at that point. As for the non-inlcusion in Whitney's posthumous "Best of" collection, I assume record industry politics and "unwritten rules" prevailed, with the latter referring to whether a duet with another major peer/rival artist may overpower the stardom of the artist in question. I don't know. Still, they did include Whitney's duet with Aretha in the latest collection.

Celine / Mariah / competition / motivation (39,239) by Edward from USA
I don't see anything wrong discussing Celine's music here either. It is not like people here are putting Mariah down or anything like it. I would love to see Mariah, Celine, Tony Braxton release good music and be popular again. They all had great albums, Mariah just happened to adapt better as music was changing, and that's why she could keep being relevant. The 90's were the days, such good music. I think the competition among Celine, Mariah, and Whitney brought us excellent music. I fought for and defended Mariah against those who said Whitney or Celine was better, but I also enjoyed their music, especially Celine's. She has never said anything shady about Mariah, and I appreciate that.

When You Believe (39,238) by Will from Australia
This has irritated me for a number of years and maybe someone here can give me a reason for it. When You Believe peaked at 15 on the Hot 100 and is a great song that's been covered many times, but I don't understand how it failed to appear on Whitneys original two disc Greatest Hits (2000). It did appear a few years later on her Ultimate Collection (2007), but again was dropped for The Best in 2012. The interesting thing is that the ultimate collection was only an 18 track cd and the other two were double discs. What's going on? Considering both these albums have much lesser hits, is it just a record label conflict?

Yikes / "Screw you, I like Mariah Carey" (39,237) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
I don't see why discussing other artists briefly in reference to popular music should be a problem here. Especially, someone like Celine who is often brought up as one of the worlds great singers as Mariah is herself. At most I saw maybe four comments about Celine's song - I don't think this qualifies as taking over the website. We should be able to have conversations, yes? Anyway, I really related to the article "Screw you, I like Mariah Carey". Most of my interaction with fellow fans has been online not in person, and in my early teens I was severely teased and bugged for how much I loved her and music. Now that I am older, I have very much taken on the stance of "Screw you, I like Mariah Carey" in many areas of my life. By that I mean not just Mariah fandom. If people don't like me because of things I enjoy or opinions I have, than I don't have to stick around. Everyone has a right to be who they are without apology or approval. I like a lot of things others would find embarrassing, I'm sure, lol and I'm in a place in my life now where I'm OK with that.
