Debut album (39,102)
by Bill from the UK
| |

I've been listening to Mariah's debut album so much recently. I don't know why, but I always overlook this album. Her vocals are fantastic, and I think the best they have ever been. So pure, full and clear. Vision Of Love, as we all know, is one of the best songs she has ever written. What an entry into the industry. But other classics like Someday, Love Takes Time, Vanishing. And the whole "b side" of the record has so many hidden gems. Sent From Up Above, All In Your Mind, and even Prisoner and its rap. A wonderful record from start to finish. I wonder if Mariah will ever work with Ben Margulies again. They wrote beautiful songs together. See you later.

When You Believe (39,099)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

Up until today, I was always wondering why that song did not reach to number one? Both singers (Whitney and Mariah) were everywhere in the media and at their peak with their latest albums (My Love Is Your Love and #1's). At that period, both singers were widely known as having die hard fans and fanatics. But still, even with both fans combined, the record still did not top the Billboard Hot 100.

Re Allan / number ones (39,098)

I believe "Can't Let Go", "Without You", "Butterfly," and "Shake It Off" could have been number one hits. "Butterfly" had airplay in the US, although it was not commercially released and was ineligible to chart. The other three songs came very close to the top spot. In an interview, Trey Lorenz said Sony pulled "Can't Let Go" from the shelves when it reached number two.

Mariah number 1 (39,097)
by Allan from pennsylvania

Who feels by now Mariah Carey should have more than 18 number one records? I feel that Butterfly should have had more hits, but Sony at the time did not give her the support she needed. As far as Rainbow, Mariah said herself that she did that album in three months because as she said "I wanted off this label."

I agree with the both of you. I have said some of the same things. Poor Nick gets blamed for everything. Also as Che said, when Wild n Out was first on, whomever Nick was dating at the time got pulled into the jokes. So it's not just a Mariah thing.

Yeah, even writing my last post I realize I left out many songs on Rainbow, Bliss, AAO and E=MC2 etc. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said we gravitate to some albums more than others, but it doesn't make any of them bad. It's even harder to pick favorite songs because some songs represent moments in my life, while other songs are lyrically breathtaking and/or inspire me for different reasons musically or spiritually. There isn't another artist for whom I could discuss their entire catalog and never get bored.

I haven't posted a comment in quite some time but I come to this site every day and read comments. I can't believe that after 5 years of marriage some are still blaming Nick for Mariah's choices. The woman is happy, give the man a break. Anyway, I thought Mariah was cute on Nick's "hit show" Wild'N Out and I agree with everything Che said.

Deedre / favorite songs from least favorite album (39,092)
by RadChad from United States
| |

Get out of my head. I was actually thinking about posting a similar post too yours entitled "favorite songs from least favorite album". Anyway, I agree with your whole post. Mine would be, from Rainbow: actually the only songs I could've done without the most is Did I Do That, it's listenable, just not my fave or go to song. I absolutely love Can't Take That Away, Bliss, HeartBreaker Remix, After Tonight and Against All Odds (I know that's half the album what can I say ) everything were just entertaining fillers. My favorite from E=MC2 are: Touch My Body, Cruise Control, I Stay In Love, For The Record, and my absolute favorite and what I consider the gem of the album I Wish You Well. I said before, I don't think she' ever had a horrible album. Some are just greater than others.

Favourite albums (39,091)
by Musti from UK

|
1990s 1. Butterfly - My all time fave. Undeniably a masterpiece, no further words needed. 2. Daydream - Even after nearly 20 years this album still sounds fresher than anything out there today. Mariah at the peak of her vocal agility. 3. Rainbow - Although this album was very rushed, I've always preferred Mariah's R&B sound to her AC sound. Bliss, Heartbreaker, Crybaby, etc. are amazing tracks. 2000s 1. E=MC2 - This album had the potential to score a series of top 10 singles. Amazing production and supreme level of interpretation of each song. 2. Glitter - her most underrated album ever. She managed to give an updated sound to 80 music and it fit her voice perfectly. Twister, All My Life, Don't Stop, Lead the Way, the whole album. 3. Merry Christmas II You - I can't wait untill Christmas every year to listen to this album. I even listen to it in summer. Magical sounds, magical voice.

Glitter: the soundtrack and movie (39,087)
by Allan from pennsylvania

I really believe that the media and press really bashed Mariah during this era. Glitter was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. I really had to sit back and play this album in its entirety and it's a good listen, her vocals are very much on point. If you listen to Glitter, you can clearly see her vocals are much better than if you compared it to Charmbraclet. [...]

I think Mariah and her career is fine. A lot better than a lot of people's in the world about now. Is making 18 million not considered fine these days? Man I wish someone would tell me my career isn't going well after making 18 million. I'm just saying that this woman has two kids, a good looking husband, a great voice, great body, making money as if 1 million is the rich mans minimum wage. Enough said.

Although, you could be right about that. I won't give up How Much, Bliss, Did I Do That, or After Tonight for nothing. I'm glad that album was released. Also, after 9/11 I understand why Never Too Far was released, but I feel it wasn't a good move. I sincerely believe everything would've turned around even with Tommy and his J going Lo, if Virgin had released Lead The Way instead. The song is straight forward, beautiful, and simplistic with a climatic ending. Never Too Far was lovely (the ending especially), but low-key throughout, and lyrically was too specific to an individual person. Lead The Way had more universal appeal. It's a shame it was never heard by the masses.

Fave album discussion (39,084)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada

I put down a top 6 list in a previous post, with Butterfly at the top of the list which is true for me. I find it so hard to discuss fave albums though because even on albums that might not be "favourites" as a whole album, there are still things I love. For example, Rainbow might not be one of my top albums, but I love Heartbreaker and Petals. Music Box is not an all time top album for me, but AYNAF is one of my fave MC songs. I'll always love Without You, and Music Box is also awesome. I don't play the album all that much compared to the others, but when I do, I don't hate any of the songs. On E=MC I love Cruise Control, Migrate, Bye, Bye, IBLYLT etc. In terms of her early stuff, I will always love her debut. I rushed to the store after hearing VOL on the radio. I love Vanishing, LTT, IDWC, Someday and Prisoner to this day. The Emotions album gave me Until The End Of Time, MIH, CLG, AYDR, SB. I guess that's why I'll always be a lamb lol.

You can't be serious with this same old mess from 2008. Wild N Out was a hit show long before Nick married Mariah and it wouldn't matter whether he was married to Mariah. Whomever Nick has ever dated during the course of the show would be mentioned (just like when he was engaged to Selita). Also when Mariah is mentioned on Wild N Out it's primarily in the context of her successes. So what he became the host of AGT after they got married? People don't tune into the show and love him as the host because she's his wife. AGT has nothing to do with Mariah and her career.

I agree Will. I've often wondered the same. If #1s and Rainbow had not been released, I can guarantee you the Glitter soundtrack would've been #1 and its lead single whether it was Heartbreaker or Loverboy. I remember when Charmbracelet came out, my boyfriend at the time said, "She needs to go away and let us miss her for awhile." By the way, she looked amazing on Wildnout.

I think Mariah's relationship with Nick is hurting her career. He got AGT after marrying MC and now WildNOut is back and making headlines for the guests making jokes about Mariah. It's like Will Smith and Jayden and the After Earth debacle. Hollywood nepotism. What do you guys think?

Since there has been some talk about Glitter, I've always wondered how the soundtrack would have turned out, if she hadn't released Rainbow, and included songs like HB etc on the soundtrack instead. Glitter I think was a very adventurous soundtrack for Mariah, which has some very outstanding and exceptional songs on it that, what I consider to be, her best vocals/lyrics/music post-90s.
