A passing observation (93,558)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
You would have all seen these videos on YouTube - and I am certain almost everyone here will get them in their feed - that are titled along the lines of "Mariah Carey can't sing anymore", "Mariah lost her voice" and so on. If you bother to click on them you will discover that the adult-cum-teenage mangirl uploader is actually gleefully showing you snippets of recent successful live notes, claiming that ("haha, showed you") Mariah can still sing exactly like she did in the 90s.
And this is all rather something to behold. For whilst he/she/it sits alone in their Mariah-wallpaper laden bedroom watching the views go up in stan orgasmic pleasure, feeling smug and self-assured that he/she/it has oh-so-cleverly taught everyone a lesson, all that's really been achieved is that there are bold statements all over YouTube either telling the scrolling general public that Mariah Carey has, in fact, lost her voice, or, at the very least, making the discussion of a somewhat retired topic very fresh in their heads. It is shockingly stupid.

Lol, I think we were all waiting for Right to Dream to show up. You know it amazes me that someone who can write lyrics as beautiful as those you quoted, could also think "boy you're acting so corny like fritos" was worthy of writing, recording, and slapping on the end of an album of your most successful songs.
And to your point Randy, Butterfly didn't really go anywhere where it was released, unfortunately. Like you, I can't fathom it either. In the UK, Honey reached number 3, then Butterfly stalled at 22, and then My All went to number 4. Admittedly, she promoted the other two a lot more, but still. At that point in her career it was almost expected for all her releases to get into the top ten, so it was a bit of a surprise to see it falter, especially as it was a "trademark" Carey/Afanasieff affair.
I remember being so annoyed with Columbia during 1998, as week after week I would read that The Roof was being released, and I'd go to the record store every Monday to check the new releases, only to find nothing. And then the same happened with Breakdown. I remember thinking for a split second "Frozen" by Madonna was Breakdown, as the single artwork was of that sepia tone Mariah had for the Butterfly photoshoot. I think we waited about 9 months between Butterfly and My All. Madness.

Hi, actually the song was a radio airplay song here in France. I remember hearing it constantly for about 1 month, right before Heartbreaker was released in september 1999. The "other version", well let's just say "we don't know it".

I think the SNL is much better. It's like her voice is just all over the place. From the very deep, low notes to the highest chest notes I've ever heard her sing live.

I'm late to the party on this one, but Radaronline is a tabloid owned by the National Inquirer. It is beyond bizarre to expect a concert leg to be sold out 6 weeks prior to its opening date. In addition, this isn't a "new" residency, it's actually an add on to her original 2 year tenure due to high demand. She sold out at 96%. Mariah keeps getting offered residencies and extensions because she sells. The Palace integrated a new slot machine designed after Mariah and her favorite things to serve as a landmark to commemorate her residency there after her Infinity series. Her fandom likes the slots. The rest of her concerts outside of Vegas usually average between the 80-90th percentile overall.

"If it's over" Grammy performance (93,552)

This performance still gives me chills her confidence, and control was out of this world. This moment is still a major highlight in MC's career as far as I am concerned.

Her performance of If It's Over at the Grammys is in a league of its own. Leaves me speechless everytime I hear it.

Yeh I assumed it had to be released. I love both those songs as well. Every song she did with Ben Margulies had this innocence about them that I just loved. And I wish she'd wrote with Carole King again. If It's Over was brilliant, and those performances at the Grammy's and SNL are easily two of the best she has ever done.

Does it have to be released as a single? Because isn't all her songs that didn't get released as a single non-successful? I will say All in Your Mind and If it's Over. One of those was released. Case closed.

Do You Know Where You're Going To (93,548)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

What if this song was picked as the single instead of I Still Believe. Imagine Mariah dress up like Marilyn Monroe and singing this song to the army just like in the I Still Believe video. More appropriate and meaningful. And the ending high notes are very impressive and inspiring too. The only problem was that this song was also coincidentally covered by another singer in her album at the same time Mariah's album was released. Such a waste opportunity.

True. She wrote it with Walter A. Since they parted ways after Butterfly, it would have to be 1997. Still a great underrated song no matter when it came out.

Mariah's Easter (93,546)

This service is about heroes, and first responders. As well as the Easter holiday. So I understand her involvement. I get why some people are on the fence about her involvement, but based on everything going on right now I can appreciate her involvement. Shoutout to all the first responders, and heroes on the frontline during these scary, and uncertain times.

Edward thanks for acknowledging me as the lead performer of Mean 3. That's a great name for our group. Of course, I have to be the Diana Ross / Beyoncé / Michael Jackson / Nicole Scherzinger / Lionel Richie of the group but I promise I won't leave until the second single. And it will be because Andrew refused to use his share of our signing bonus for my lighting guy. Ok theory on your pick for Butterfly. I think it's an amazing song. Definitely in my top 5 MC songs of all time. I fully believe had Columbia released it as a physical single in the US, it would've went to #1. MCs airplay at the time wasn't strong but her single sales were. Fans like me were running to the store to get her singles with remixes and stuff. The airwaves and record stores were crowded that fall. Remember Boyz II Men and Janet Jackson released albums within the same month. That's why Butterfly didn't stay number one longer as an album but as far as the song/single going to number one, I think that would've been a pretty safe bet. But of course Tommy with his bag of bullshit couldn't let that happen with a song in which she is subtlety screaming let me go.

I had no idea Mariah even knew Joel Osteen. I never would have put them together. Kanye knowing him a actually makes more sense .Lol.
Anyway despite all that, as a healthcare worker (not a really important one, but they claim I'm essential lol) I appreciate what they are trying to do.

Randy, I have to admit those are some deep lyrics on "Right to Dream". I would've been shocked if you had picked a different song.
Even though you, Andrew and I are considered the Mean-3 by some on this board, I think we are some of her most devoted fans.
My favorite non-successful song would be "Butterfly". I don't understand why such a ballad so well written and beautifully sung didn't go anywhere on the charts.
Spread your wings and prepare to fly For you have become a butterfly, oh Fly abandonedly into the sun If you should return to me We truly were meant to be So spread your wings and fly Butterfly
The one and only, Mariah Carey.

Favorite non-successful song (93,542)
by Randy from USA
| |

Andrew, Edward and the Webmaster are going to be shocked by this one. But I'ma have to go with "Right To Dream". I still cannot get over the lyrics: "I wonder where I left myself and lost the will to fly." "It's cold beneath the sun and the fire in me is languishing." "An angel lands with broken wings warms me with his eyes. The ice that sheathes around my heart unravels as he smiles." I swear if the general public were given these lyrics, they would never believe MC wrote them. A Pop/R&B icon not singing about love? And then it's just her and a guitar and no studio vocals that she can't replicate live? I mean this is as stripped down and genius as MC can get. It's the saddest song about hope in existence. I still get emotional whenever I play it.

My understanding is that the entire song was from the Butterfly sessions, meaning it was written and recorded back in 1997 with the rest of the album.

Right To Dream was the song that many of friends loved when it was released. It didn't receive much airplay on the radio, but it sure did get a lot of elevator and store music airplay.

For me, it has to be "The Roof". I have friends that are non-fans, and when I play this song, they all love it. I have even had people ask me if this is from her "new album". Sampling "The Shook Ones" was brilliant, her vocals were amazing, and she looked phenomenal in the video. (Also, didn't she direct the video?) Classic.

I have a soft spot for Almost Home, too. It started a journey for me when it came out. It's a tie between The Roof and Underneath the Stars for me, however. Straight up classics.
