A day like today in 1990 (89,546)

Mariah was at a very important R&R convention at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, looking gorgeous. The best was yet to come.

Please respect Madonna, avoid sexist comments (89,545)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|

You can like or dislike Madonna, but saying that she based her career in creating scandal and in a sexualized image feels very reductive. She's done so many different music styles and she's very keen on working with artists who are vanguard. She never relies in her past, in her back catalogue. She always rearranges her greatest hits for each new tour, offering new twists on classic songs, what proves that she cherishes so much her craft (I wish Mariah would do that in her tours instead of giving us the same renditions of the same songs with almost the same arrangements). Many of you may not be familiar with her album "Ray Of Light" from 1998, but it's not only her best and more mature album in her entire career, but one of the best albums of the 90's (and in music history according to Rolling Stone magazine and many other critics). I think she's a little desperate for success right now because she worked with Maluma just because he is trendy and hugely known in the Latin music world, but how can a person who calls herself a feminist can team up with a guy whose songs are the paradigm of sexism and many of his lyrics with a violent content towards women?
Anyway I feel disappointed while reading some sexist and gerontophobic comments on this board, which simply reflect the sexism in our cisheteropatriarchal society we live in. Same as Wendy Williams who said about Madonna's BBMA performance that "she moves like an old woman". Does she think she's gonna stay forever young talking about her hot topics? By the way Wendy Williams should stick to her hot topics because everytime she talks about music it's embarrassing to watch (she called "Vision Of Love" the most stupid song ever, quote).
It seems like for some of you a woman must be polite, demure, "classy" (WTF), and if a woman is over her 50's you see "inappropriate" to wear certain clothes or do certain dance movements. Disgusting. Always criticising and telling how a woman should look or behave according to her age. Nothing but unadmited sexism. No one judges Iggy Pop for being shirtless 24/7. One thing is to criticise an oversexualized image or attitude (which is not Madonna's case right now) or the unnecesity of using sex as a reclame in the songs, and other very different thing is criticising that pattern for being "too old". I see that oversexualized image in other current artists like in Ariana Grande's "7 Rings", it's sad to see her looking like a porn actress in some shots. There's a difference between using sex and talking about sex with an attitude like Madonna did back in the day, grabbing her crotch like "this is mine", empowering other women to feel stronger, unapologetic, and allow themselves to express their sexuality but not for the eyes of men, which is the main difference I see with the sexyness projected by 99% of the current female singers. But I admit this point is very arguable. In my opinion, some people confuse female empowerment and use it as a façade for sexual objectification. Most pop music videos nowadays present girls in an almost denigrating way (for instance rappers surrounded by women treated as sexual objects, basically).
We shouldn't be wasting our time in comparing Mariah and Madonna, both are great examples of hard-working women who have succeeded in their own fields. The main difference between them is that Madonna is not a "vocalist", while Mariah was one of the best vocalists in music history, and still has one of the most unique and beautiful tones ever. And I would add that Mariah is one of the most underrated artists ever, often compared to Whitney and Celine and other divas but for me Mariah is the most complete, she's much more than a singer.
By the way I wish Mariah would care more about her visuals, her live presentations, her videos and the way she presents her work to the audience, because Madonna is impeccable at that and Mariah, now that she has lost a big part of her range and barely moves on stage, could be amazing to watch if she and her team would care more about this aspect.

Mariah BBMA Icon Award speech and performance (89,544)
by Joachim Agerup Lĝkkevik from Norway

I have been offline for a month, and didn't even know Mariah recieved the Icon award until yesterday. And wow. Her voice sounded amaziing, low key and strong, no doubt about it being live. She ownd the stage.
The speech brought me to tears. After all the negative press the last few years, she practically rose like a phoenix, I don't think a single person can say anything negative about Mariah that night.
She has helped bringing me through difficult times. She had so much integrity. She made it tabu to not like and respect her. What a woman. You deserved this, Mariah.

The Butterfly era was very much on point. To me it is still her most poignant and profound album up to date. She looked fabulous, sexy yet classy. She was the pinnacle of the zeitgeist in those days. And the "Honey" video is still my all time favourite. Or perhaps my second favourite after "The Roof".

Yes, I know people who said the same. I think that was the time were the fans got divided and a lot of older "listeners" left. I was suprised by the Honey video too back then. But I loved it. Great video. Love the Bond girl style. Her look was sexy but still classy. That's the point, a singer should still look classy if she wants to be taken serious.
Madonna was always just shocking and "trendy". No one said: Oh what a voice she has. Lol. Simply entertaining, nothing more.

Agreed. I remember when Honey came out a lot of people said her new sexualized image distracted from her music or overshadowed it completely.

Her thing is different (89,538)
by Lara from Middle East

Madonna has been known for being provocative with a sexy attitude, her thing in this era of oversexualized media doesn't work anymore. As for Mariah, she has been known for her voice and talent and even with her diminished ability, she's still a contender, most of the back lash she receives when she dresses sexy is probably not because it's not age appropriate, but because she doesn't need it to shine.

Should have been a single. She usually opens her tours with songs released as singles. I think she is too concerned that the general attending public must know the songs, at least the opening number. Though she did open All The Hits with Heat. Not a hit or a single.

Mariah Carey axes cover of Jackson 5 song (89,532)
by Dove from United States

She dropped most of the #1's from the setlist. Media just likes to start drama. Also, they may have been friends but she wasn't with him every minute. She may believe he's innocent but she doesn't know for sure that he never molested any kids. IMO it's a good idea to take IBT out of the setlist, at least for a while.

You summed it up. Madonna's new song is pretty good. But everything feels like Madonna desperately trying to get and retain attention for being edgy. This Madame X nonsense is, well, just nonsense. And a 60 year old acting sexual to an audience of teenagers? GTFO.

Mariah and Michael (89,530)

If Mariah really has dropped IBT because of unproveable, spurious allegations against a dead man that served only to make those who made the allegations profit then shame on her. She should hope people don't try to profit by accusing her of wrongdoing after she has passed and is unable to defend herself, ruining a lifetime spent doing good. Whatever happened to "He was my friend and I don't believe it"? You know, the type of thing people with integrity might say?

That's exactly what Madonna's intention is. She never sells her music as high art. She is very much aware that she's ultimately marketing pop music. She still is the master of flirting with controversy, challenging whatever is deemed normal or acceptable, pushing the boundaries of taste and creating iconic moments in the most provocative way possible. Even current Bey and GaGa and Taylor can still take a lot of notes from her. What has gotten tired for me, though, (aside from the progressively cheapening sex symbol image and wardrobe) is her constant association of sexual expression and religion. That was brave and cool in Like A Prayer, tired by the time American Life came in and has been beaten dead and buried to the ground when MDNA arrived. But she still is hungry. She has never really coasted. There's something to be said for that. She still is Pop's top bitch when it comes to discipline and drive, and even if she doesn't really set the trends anymore, she is at least willing to keep up with what's new and trendy and put her own spin on it. We can't really say that for many of her contemporaries as well as other legacy artists including Mariah.

Honestly my problem with Madonna doing things half naked is not her age but that almost every single time it feels like a publicity stunt rather than an art direction. I do applaud her for what she did with the holograms though. Even though the end result could've looked more polished, I can see others trying to copy and perfect it in the near future. This is the type of impact she should be making at this age, not coming out on stage with a patch on her eye and rolling around on the floor like a mop.

Re: State of her voice (89,501) (89,527)

Well said. My best friend used to work as a tenor and he performed at the major European opera houses. He told me that throughout his entire career he never used alcohol, didn't smoke and hardly ever hit the town. Preserving one's voice requires a lot of discipline and vocal hygiene. Mariah has been on the bender ever since she left Mottola. This in combination with extensive travelling, doing interviews for hours in a row and not taking the proper amount of rest is a recipe for vocal decline. Of course, a career as an opera singer requires much less PR activities and public exposure than the life of an international superstar.

That dress was indeed an atrocity and she doesn't need that kind of outfit to look sexy. The BBMA ensemble was pure perfection.

Totally agree with you. When she feels up on herself it makes me cringe too.
It's funny because when Cher used to wear the costumes with all the cutouts it didn't look bad on her IMO. Or the outfit Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala was pretty naked but it wasn't as offensive. I can't put my finger on why.

If you're asking me B, I don't love when Mariah shows too much skin. Like in this clip for example. Or the rotisserie chickens in the GTFO video. But I'm still a fan. I feel like Mariah is like Playboy and Madonna is like Hustler. (Not that I've seen those magazines but I heard about them on American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story.)

She sounds so soulful here. Musically, in terms of melody and structure, "Can't Let Go" is one of the most enchanting songs I've ever heard. Lyrically, it just cuts way too deep.

"Look at Diana Ross. She is just simply stunning at 75." Oh yes, must be wonderful genes plus a healthy lifestyle. She just looks beautiful. Madonna looks too harsh with all the muscles. Never liked that. Like the "Hung Up" video. What I like most is a classy style or casual and natural. Mariah is a natural beauty.
