The Asia tour and MC15 Caution era (85,088)
by Ethan from United States
| |
|
|
I'm happy that the setlist is similar to the Butterfly Returns residency. However, here are my two cents. 1) Cut Emotions, VOL, and OSW and 2) replace them with LTT (a whole song), IBT, WY, and Without You. The Asian audience prefers ballads/pop songs. Yes I know that VOL is the magna carta of melisma but I don't think it's as popular as IDWC or LTT from her first album in Asia. It'd make sense to include Without You as an encore with Hero since it's her biggest international hit in Asia. And include WY as a must as part of promoting new album and music. Please wear a short dress when singing uptempo numbers to move around easier. I remember seeing her in a blue Asian-inspired short dress singing to Honey as part of the Charmbracelet tour and it was a cute and flirty performance.
Now to the new era: management/PR is on point. We need to take a chill pill and let the professionals do their job. They are in this business for a reason. The music industry is so different now compared to the 90s in terms of promotion and sales. Thus, WY goes to AC and GTFO/The Distance goes to Urban/R&B radio stations for an array of audience. Based on Mariah's album track lists, the #2 and #3 songs are often the most popular/strongest singles and WY was placed at #2 so I wonder how the rest of the songs played out. I really hope there's a deluxe version with a few more songs or some hidden songs. I think she hopes to go on tour in the US with this album (if it's a success) so that's why her residency is only scheduled in February of 2019. In today's music world, sales of at least 1 million is a success. A series of albums released by female artists (Britney, Christina, Fergie, etc.) had very poor sales in the past years. In my opinion, Mariah needs to have more confidence and work on her performance.

It actually does make sense. I kind if like the idea that they aren't focusing just on getting a number one single.

This song is R&B gold. It is at once perfect club music, a perfect mid-summer jam song and down right baby making music. Total hit in my opinion. Radio please embrace this. I suggest playing it on a loop for about 5 to 10 times and then try stopping. I think you will get it then. I wish for it 250 million + audience impressions. May it go the distance.

I love all three new songs we've heard. GTFO > The Distance > With You. Here is hoping that the song she did with Busta last year would be included on Caution.

Now that I played the song dozens of times and read the lyrics, part of me thinks this could be about us lambs. Just a thought, but clearly can go either way.

The rollout / The Distance (85,079)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

Okay, before we get to the song, can we just take some time to appreciate how her current team has managed to handle this album rollout, which is easily her best, most organized and strategic one since TEOM? Seriously, finally she's surrounded by people who get how it is to release an album post 2010s, as this one has the hallmarks of a current album release: the controversial buzz track ro test the waters (usually reserved for artists who haven't dropped an album in a while), the first official single which isn't so much a departure from the artist's familiar sound, the high-profile televised gigs, the fan-interaction-revealed cover art, the surprise instant grat track rewarded to pre-orders - her current team really get it. That alone is cause enough for celebration.
Now on to the song - and let me phrase this in the typical expressions by dem netizens seen on social media memes and comments sections: issa bop, dat beat tho, lemme get myself a new wig, she ain't playing this time, this is lit, it's a vibe, etc. Mariah made something that as sounds awesome blasting out from car speakers on a late night drive as it is as call for slow dancing in a club. It's great. I'm with those who say this is the most excited they have been for an album since 2008. GTFO, With You and then this? 3 for 3 for me.

With You / cover art / The Distance (85,077)
by Brad from USA

I hope everyone is being well and treating others well. I really like "With You" and hope that it can gain some airplay. I do question its accessibility to a broad audience given its specificity in detailing a certain type of relationship. As I may be the biggest, oldest dang lamb on this board, I have to say that the cover art for "Caution" reminds me of the cover art for Luther Vandross' "Your Secret Love" album released in 1996, which I still keep in rotation in my car's c.d. player. Yep, I went there. Anyhow, "The Distance" sounds very current and fun yet one can readily imagine it in a previous era reworked as a full throttled torch song. Either way, I am in the camp of being a grateful 28 year long (and counting) lamb who marvels at the reality of having more music and an upcoming album from my "sound scroll to the sky". May we continue to be so blessed and appreciate it.

I agree Andrew. I have listened to it around 10+ times at this point and it's not my taste either. I did find some background vocals I believe are lovely, and that climax is something you rarely hear in modern music. I think I enjoy the songs most in the order they came in (GTFO > With You > The Distance). By no means do I think The Distance is a poorly written song judging by how so many people are infatuated with it. Bad music gains popularity all the time, but The Distance is far from that abyss. For me, this is not what I look for in Mariah's music and that's okay. She delivers versatility on each album and these particular songs seem to be playing different fields like she normally does. I will continue to support the song because I want to support her in general. I have been out of the mainstream music circle for quite some time so I'm not really looking for songs that appeal to the public (nor do I know what one would sound like). I will take off time from streaming GTFO to help possibly create buzz for The Distance since many lambs feel like this one is a hit. Can't wait for the new album - it's promising. Still not over "go and stay at your friend's house or something".

I finally was able to hear the entire song. I love it 9 out of 10. The only thing I wished was different is, after Ty's rap verse, I wish Mariah resung the "dark days cold nights, late October" part, that part is so catchy and it would have helped the song flow better instead of jumping right to the climax. Anyway I'm really looking forward to this CD and era. Even if it's not a success (which I hope it will be) it's still refreshing to see a different Mariah. She listens to us, most of the songs are made with new or hot producers, the CD will only be 10 to 12 songs long. Good rollout and team behind her. Now she has to do what she does best and sing. The record company better promote this. Also can she release Migrate as a single? Lol.

Mediocre songs (85,069)
by george golden from uk

GTFO is better than this two new songs. This woman is getting worse by the minute. I am sorry I can't pretend and act like this album is going to be amazing. She is hell bent on proving she is hood at the expense of her incredible legacy. She can't seem to evolve from the 90s and 2000s style that she has beaten to death. What a shame even these days where it's easy to get a number one album and she finds it difficult because of mediocre songs. I used to get teased for being such a Mariah fan and never imagined a day when I would be so disappointed by her. Rihanna is going to surpass her easily in these days of streaming and maybe then it will be too late.

You are so right. Just a month ago, some us were so worried about the new era upon hearing GTFO. Two weeks ago, we became increasingly more worried about the direction MC was taking with MC15 when With You premiered. Well, Monday she released the album title and today we are singing praises for The Distance. I admit that I was worried too after hearing With You being positioned as the first single. But today I am not worried anymore. MC and her team showed us that we should worry no more. They have clearly showed us - we got this Lambs. You all just get your money ready for the 11/16. Caution, just join us for the ride. MC ain't playing this time with Caution.

I'm with Andrew on this one. It's a nice song, but not for me. Right now, GTFO resonates with me more lyrically because of life stuff, and not the happy love songs right now. Hoping that will change as life progresses. But I am 100% behind how the new team are doing things. They're shaking things up, not kissing radio DJ's asses by doing call-ins like she used to, doing something new with Mariah and how to roll things out. It's new and fresh for her, maybe not for other artists who may have been doing this for a while. Everything has been planned on when to make announcements, when to release songs, videos etc. what gets promoted, what doesn't. It's all there ready and waiting. You know that the manager must have a huge calendar and they've marked it all out with Roc Nation on the whole thing. Keep it going.

Look at you, Andrew. That was nice dude.
I believe Mariah and/or her team do read this board from time to time and probably check for your posts specifically. Roc Nation would not be doing their job if they didn't. The fact that you even are making the effort to be middle of the road is in itself a sign that this is going to be a great era.
Reading your posts and knowing people personally that suffer from bipolar disorder, my concern over the last few years is never with what you say (because that is your right, within reason and decency), but how that would sound to a terminally insecure individual who idolizes a woman that committed suicide. In the back of my mind I have dreaded that something tragic would happen and Trey, JD or someone else's word we trust would inform the world that the last thing she was looking at was this board. That may seem like a strong thing to type but words have power, especially the well written ones. You love Mariah obviously or you would not be here. Let's just know who she is what she will always struggle with at her core and accept the likelihood that she does check the oldest board out there and we may be or are a major apart of her stage anxiety and fear of being less than perfect.
Looking forward to productive exchanges with you.

Thanks Tevin. On another note, I think all of us should consider that in 2018 the standard GMA/Today Show Friday Concert Series, morning chat with Kelly Rippa, laugh with Ellen in the afternoon and late show jam fest only go so far to reach the millennial pop culture masses. Today, it’s about using strategies that are out of the box and heavy on social media that Roc Nation can handle from wherever in the world she is. Remember that she (and anyone else on a normal non competitive week) only needs to reach 75-80k for a number 1 album and the singles charts are streaming heavy which is why the promotional push has been about warming up the buzz from a small flame to a bonfire. Roc Nation is putting their efforts into creating a sleeper word of mouth hit which at first feels backwards for an established artist but actually is genius for an artist without a top ten hit in 10 years.
