Mariah-approved (87,131) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Just gonna leave this Mariah-approved cover of Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) right here. By the way, I heard she has new music coming up.

Regarding my last message (87,130) by Dove from United States
I was thinking about what I wrote and it's kinda mean. I'm not that person. If Ariana inspires young people like Mariah inspired me then good for her and her fans. She's not my cup of tea but people obviously love her so I take back my negativity and wish her prosperity and success.

Article: All I Want is highest-charting holiday hit in 60 years (87,129) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
This has a really good chance of breaking into the top 5 next week. With our collective hopes, let such words materialize.

Re: Ariana (87,120) (87,128) by Dove from United States
I thought about it and it's not insecurity. I was sharing an observation but honestly I don't think about Ariana that much. Usually only when she's trying to be Mariah. I honestly don't believe Ariana will have longevity because to me she's not that special. I think she has been successful so far because of her looks and because she was likeable on Nickoledeon. I don't even think Ariana is as good a singer as Aaliyah or Brandy or even Christina (who I'm not even a fan of) - much less Mariah. I'm not saying this because I'm a "hater" because there are other (some younger) artists who I do like - I like Loren Allred, Chevele (the country singer who just won The Voice), Tori Kelly, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Alessia Cara, Lauren Daigle, Adele, Kelly Clarkson. Just off the top of my head. I even think Victoria Justice could be a better star than Ariana (with the right songs) because she seems more mature and she's a better actress not to mention she's beautiful. I know that someday someone may come along who will have more success than Mariah. It would be nice if it were someone who was actually better than Mariah (in terms of singing, writing, videos, star power, intelligence, etc.) not just a random girl with a decent voice and a nice tan. That's all I have to say about that.

Re: Jaker20 (87,121), Tori Kelly (87,127) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
The problem with Tori Kelly, as talented as she is, is that her material is just weak. She hasn't found her sound yet, which is critical because her voice is pretty indistinguishable. In a way, she's like Katherine McPhee - talented, but just isn't remarkable enough to stand out. But unlike Katherine, she still has a better chance of making it big. She should just need the perfect storm of strong material, an unmistakable sound, a great team behind her to succeed.

A new sound? I like Caution, but I don't hear a new sound.

Re: Jaker20 (87,121) (87,124) by jaker20 from US
I didn't say she has to acknowledge her. I'm saying she should act gracefully when an new artist acknowledge her as influence. She is always shady. And to be frank, if I am on her place, I will completely, completely embrace Ariana. No question about it. Because if I am at that level I would not still be insecure. I mean look at your post, it reeks of insecurity because I didn't even mention Arian being as talented or as successful. Far from it, in fact, she can't and won't be able to touch Mariah's success. Even more reason why you're all so triggered by her. Insecurity is becoming Mariah's look, just read Walter Afanasieff's latest interview who is also bad mouthing her for the same reason. Mariah should focus on supporting new artists, that is good for her growth. Look at Kelly Clarkson who is inspiring new talents.

Mariah upped her game on Caution by working with new cowriters and producers. It's her best album in years. I hope she continues to expiriment with her sound on future albums.

Mariah can acknowledge who she wants and she does not owe anyone anything. Mariah is finally accepting her status and honestly how would you feel if someone or others were trying to create someone off of your legacy and trying to make it a competition were there is none? Scooter Brun started this and now that the results have been of modest success to say the least it egg all over their face. Again four albums later she can not get any multi big selling albums and #1 song based off of sympathy is not doing anything to help cement Ariana as a legend. She is an average pop star. She is nowhere in league of Taylor and Adele as far as sells and talent wise Tori Kelly is superior in my humble opinion but her team has not found a clever way to market her. Honestly what works for Ariana is that she still looks like a pre teen and her music appeals more to the younger demographic as well.

Re: Ariana (87,082) (87,120) by jaker20 from US
You all need to take a deep breathe and not show your insecurities. All artists are influenced by someone either known or unknown and Mariah and lambs should acknowledge it as such. Ariana is heavily influenced by Mariah. Mariah is already at an age where she should be securing her legacy and one good way of doing that is supporting newer and younger talents. Who knows maybe Ariana will become more successful someday. Lambs should be comfortable with that because Mariah is a legend in her own way. If Mariah wants to be back at the top of the charts, she should simply up her game and evolve. Look at Lady Gaga. But Mariah doesn't need to because she's already a legend. Being insecure is not a cute look. By the way Caution is her best creative effort since TEOM.

Billboard (87,119) by B from USA
Billboard had Patti LaBelle introduce Woman of the Year Award recipient Ariana Grande at the WIM 2018 ceremony. Wonder if Grande's team reached out to her or if it was just a coincidence? On another note why hasn't Mariah received a Billboard Icon Award?

TJ if you watch old interviews from Mariah you could tell she was a diva in the 90ies. At the age of 24 she was already a global superstar with many number ones and a bestselling female artist. I can only imagine how that affects a young person. But for me Mariah was always more playing the diva and hiding a bit of her true, sensitive part. I think Mariah was the biggest diva during 95/96. In the late 90ies she just seemed funny and humble again. What I'm trying to say is Mariah was a diva almost since the beginning. But I don't mean it negative. Mariah is much more than that image. We fans know it. We feel it trough her music. Someone wrote on YouTube just look into her eyes and you see the "real" MC. I agree with it. I see a beautiful woman with a big heart. Now I'm gonna listen to "Portait".

Same here. Losing a loved one, particularly at Christmas, is hard. I lost my dad just over a week ago. Kinda fitting he passed at Christmas time. It was his favorite time of year. He was the Christmas nut. Sorry for your loss.

Is still a favorite of mine as well. MC and Marc Shaiman have created some great songs together as well. Hopefully they work on some more masterpieces together as they did with CTITAA.

Wishing you and your family comfort during this difficult time. Also I have to agree with you in regards to Ariana the comparisons to Mariah are quite weak at this point. They sound nothing alike vocally, musically on her worst day Mariah is still superior to Ariana. Four albums in and still Ariana has yet to produce a classic song or album so I feel like the media and both fan bases need to stop with the comparisons because it is like comparing apples to oranges.

Re: What's the next holiday classic? (87,058) (87,109) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
I have listened to so many Christmas albums. For me, it takes a very special artist to make a holiday song memorable, let alone a hit. Unfortunately, I can only think of 2 artists capable of doing so - Mariah Carey and Kelly Clarkson. Here are their songs that should be played alongside AIWFCIY:

5. Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)
This is a simple, beautiful ballad that she can clearly still mostly sing live in its entirety with her range today if she wanted to. The only problem with it is how dated it sounds. It's got that 90s stamp. Last Christmas has the 80s written all over it, but that combined with the bells and other festive instrumentation works to its advantage.

4. When Christmas Comes
Whether it be the original or duet version, this again has that vintage feel that makes it glide like no other modern Christmas song can. It sounds like Fly Like A Bird's holiday sister. This is the closest Mariah has come to achieving her Mine Again vocals, which even by then we knew she could not replicate live. It's also what keeps this song from being accessible.

3. Underneath The Tree
There's a good reason this was the most played new Christmas song in 2013. It has that timeless vibe. This was obviously heavily inspired by AIWFCIY and it's the only similarly-styled song by any current artist that's even worthy of being replayed over and over.

2. Wrapped In Red
The emotion in this song is enough to make it a winner. That, combined with a pitch-perfect vocal, gorgeous melody and lovely lyrics should make this a hit, but it just may be too sophisticated for radio. The wall of sound treatment makes it sound timeless. It's the best track on its parent album of the same name.

1. Christmas Time Is In The Air Again
How do you know a song is classic material? When even its original version sounds like a cover. Play it for anyone who isn't familiar with Mariah's discography and they would instantly mistake it for a rendition of an older recording. It definitely isn't as catchy as AIWFCIY, but that's mostly due to its tempo and subdued nature. It's the perfect length, not repetitive and is very elegant and romantic. Since Mariah's whispery delivery is acquired taste (though I feel it's quite apt for a jazzy track), it could be the reason why it hasn't gained traction despite many live performances.

It's worth noting, though, that if Mariah and Kelly keep singing them in high profile events during the holidays, they may just be slowly but surely ingrained into the public's consciousness and become future hits.

Re: Ugh Ariana (87,106) (87,108) by Edward from USA
You're spot on. There wasn't anything gimmicky about Minnie. She must be turning in her grave. That comment irritated me but then I considered the source. A good lamb should know not to use lipsync/guimmicks against other artist to put Mariah in a pedestal without risking opening Pandoras Box.

What are the best songs on Toni Braxon's Christmas album? I've never listened to it.
