Re: Fourth of July/Underneath the Stars Mash Up (82,931) (82,936) by Bill from the UK
That is true lol. I don't even go near Boy and Why You Mad and Infamous and Crapfinity and I Don't and Did I Do That and Can't Say No and Triumphant and The Star and Bet'cha Gon' Know feat R Kelly.

Re: Studio singer? (82,933) (82,935) by Tijl from Belgium
You do have a point there Randy. Years ago, at the end of the '90s, a friend of mine who worked as an operatic vocal coach, told me that Mariah indeed had a unique voice. But the extensive use of her pipes in the beginning of her career ruined her vocal abilities forever. She further told me that any singer should take a decent amount of rest and really pamper their instrument. Mariah did nothing but work, work, work. This in combination with the extensive travelling and an overload of performances and interviews is anything but what a singer needs to prolong their potential. Nevertheless I believe our girl is still a force to be reckoned with.

Studio singer? (82,933) by Randy from USA
This is for die-hards and those who can remain objective. What do you guys think about MC being labeled a studio singer? We all at one point thought that MC was the best vocalist in the world. But the live performances really started getting bad about 7 years into her career. The other day I was looking through the Billboard book of number ones and Narada Michael Walden who produced I Don't Wanna Cry was talking about how many times MC re-recorded parts of that song until she thought it was perfect. I even read during Honey she gave Diddy hundreds of tracks to choose from but wouldn't let him in the studio while she recorded her vocals. So this got me to thinking. Did MC really shoot herself in the foot by recording things in pieces in the studio and putting it all together when it was perfect? When you add that to her insecurities it made sense that she would fall apart on stage. For a woman so vocally talented, why was it hard for her to show out on stage for the majority of her career? It seems I can pull three times as many amazing, awe inspiring performances from Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle than I could MC. But their tracks on the albums are not vocally as amazing and awe inspiring as a Never Too Far or a Vision of Love. So does this mean MC is a studio singer? And please don't attack me or start with the nuances MC does that others don't. Nuances is what has some people calling Brandy the vocal bible on Facebook and to me she's a little more than mediocre. Sorry to ramble.

My intent was to let those who cannot attend the concert know that it is aired by The CW in the fall. Usally, the first week of October. I also did not know that you had already posted about it.

Well at least I'm trying to give the songs I don't care for another chance. With the exception of Crapfinity. [censored] that song. They could mix that song in with a bunch of songs I like and I wouldn't even press play. Lol.

Re: Mariah the trendsetter (82,870) (82,930) by B from USA
MIAM was recorded over the course of five years yet is Mariah's best album since 2005. The album has a cohesiveness that E=MC2 and MOAIA do not have. You would assume that Memoirs would be her most cohesive album since it was written and produced primarily by Mariah, Tricky, and The Dream but it doesn't. Instead of being a cohesive solid body of work it's a repeative and uninspired collection of 2008-2009 R&B. It's Mariah's most dated album. Obsessed, H.A.T.E.U., and JD's remix are the only essential recordings from that era although I do love Candy Bling. I wish she had included the criminally underrated Almost Home on MIAM instead of The Art of Letting Go and her forgettable collaborations with R. Kelly and MJB. I don't care if Mariah releases her new album this year or next year I just hope it's an amazing body of work that sounds nothing like MIAM or any of her releases from the aughts. I want a classic Carey album inspired by her work in the 90's like Always Be My Baby, Slipping Away, Melt Away, and Underneath The Stars.

I really like Triumphant although Mimi only does background vocals. There was a time when I needed the message of the song every day.

So we are agreed in that the "we did this then this and it made this happen" storytelling and the setting of a scene and creating atmosphere is preferential to more "down wiv da kids" lyrics and "you make me feel this wayyyyy" way-overdone stuff. Adele has thrived from it because it is what people have reacted to for a while now. Somebody Like You is a shining example of a heartbreaking moment when you desperately revisit an ex that had moved on. Whether in your head or not. It is a universal experience. When We Were Young is a good example of nostalgia tinged with sadness. People want stories, honesty, atmosphere, mood - not constantly generic lyrics. In my opinion. If one more song comes out with people arguing over who the [censored] it is about - Luis or Motorola or the Smurf - then stick a fork in me. I'm done.

Better to lay claim to background vocals on Tryumfun than lead vocals on Infuhmuuuuuhhhz.

Mariah had financial problems in 2001? She was paid a $21 million advance in 2001 for Glitter and bought out of her contract for $28 million in 2002.

Underneath The Stars (Smooth Harmonies Version) (82,920) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Heard this yet? Smooth, intricate ethereal harmonies. Mariah at her true vocal peak. The perfect balance between levity and gravity.

I have always listened to these songs back-to-back and is my favorite Mariah combo of all time. You're right. Sometimes I listen to Mariah's more recent lyrics and while they are still more relatable and honest that what she started writing during the beginning of her career (albeit have become progressively try-hard or even immature at times), I miss the poetic quality, that special thing that both of these songs overflow with.

Why can't I stop listening to this song now? I listen to it and then no matter how much I shower, the water is never hot enough to burn away the guilt.

Re: Underneath the Stars/Fourth of July Mashup (82,915) (82,916) by Andrew from UK
Those two songs are classic with imagery of two carefree young people in the midst of love exposed to the elements in the warmth and abandon of summer. I often thought the Always Be My Baby video was more suited to them. I visualise it when I hear those songs, the two youths running through fields in the dark and swimming in the lake. Mariah would do well to create an updated version, a new track along the same lines and start telling stories once more, returning to a stripped down, non-over produced format. One of the best things about #Beautiful was that it suggested a story, it had atmosphere. That was before they decided to suddenly stop the song half way through. Mariah is at her very best when she tells stories, creates feelings of nostalgia for love or youth or recounting a memory.

Touring (82,912) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
At this point in her career Mariah is considered a legend and legacy act, and like most artists in her position they earn most of their income from touring because record sells are not as big as they used to be. Yes M is a very wealthy woman but in order to keep up her lifestyle and take care of employees and family she has to work and right now touring is helping to keep the revenue coming. But if you believe that Mariah is struggling to maintain you are definitely living on another planet.
